J.D. Cooper, 74, of Caryville died June 28 at Doctors Memorial Hospital in Bonifay. He was born March 27, 1933, in Bonifay, son of Lewis C. and Delia Arnold Cooper.
Survivors include his wife, Willeen Beck Cooper of Caryville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry D. and Genise Cooper of Chipley, James D. and Kim Cooper of Westville; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Williadean and Tank Railey, Diana and Buster Hewett, all of Caryville, Darlene Sexton of Westville, Gerlene and Cal Thompson of Vernon; two brothers, L.C. Cooper and Robert Cooper, both of Caryville; a sister, Christilla Gay of Caryville, 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral was held July 2 at Harris Chapel Church with the Revs. Earnest Hodge and Ralph Merchant officiating.
Burial was in Dyson Cemetery with Peel Funeral Home of Bonifay directing.
George Franklin Vaughn Sr.
George Franklin Vaughn Sr., 81, of Caryville died June 27 at Wiregrass Hospital in Geneva, Ala. He was born Dec. 23, 1925, in Caryville, son of George Roland and Fannie Childree Vaughn.
Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, George and Judy Vaughn Jr. of Neptune Beach, Willie and Cathy Vaughn, Wilford and Jackie Vaughn, all of Caryville, Tim and Joann Vaughn of Wausau; two sisters, Grace Harcus of Bonifay and Yvonne Mullins of Summerville, S.C.
A memorial service was held at Calvary Pentecostal Holiness Church in Vernon with the Rev. Tim Bush officiating.
Peel Funeral Home of Bonifay was in charge of arrangements.
James Wesley Meredith
James Wesley Meredith, 85, of St. Bernard, La., died June 25 at River West Hospital in Plaquemine, La. He was a former resident of Ponce de Leon.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he was a member of the Electrical Workers Local 130 and Ponce de Leon Masonic Lodge 157.
Survivors include his wife Mary (Gagliano) Meredith of St. Bernard; a daughter and son-in-law, Arlene and Herbert Buras Jr. of Ponce de Leon; a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. James W. Meredith Jr. and wife, Margie, of South Haven, Miss.; two sisters, Margaret Spiers of Ponce de Leon and Lillian Powell of Pensacola; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services were held June 29 in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Larry McGowan officiating and Sims Funeral Home of Bonifay directing.
Members of Ponce de Leon Masonic Lodge 157 served as pallbearers.
Lamar L. Townsend
Lamar L. Townsend, age 74, of Chipley died June 29. He was born Dec. 22, 1932 in Bell to Beverly McCoy Townsend and Minnie Mock Pittman. Before moving to Chipley in 1970, Lamar lived in Jacksonville.
He was a deacon of the Holmes Creek Baptist Church and a past Sunday School teacher, active in Gideons, a member of Chipley Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce, Relay for Life and a board member of Capital City Bank.
He also owned and operated the Townsend Truss plant.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Jeannette Townsend of Chipley; his mother, Minnie Pittman of Jacksonville; one son, Douglas Townsend and wife Janet of Chipley; one daughter Gayle Townsend Grotheer and husband Rob of Savannah, Ga.; two brothers, Michael Pittman and wife Laura of Jacksonville and Bobby Pittman and wife Linda of Silbee, Texas; two sisters, Frances Pruitt of Marianna and Florence Ratliff and husband David of Cincinnati, Ohio; three grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held July 2 at the funeral home chapel with the Revs. Tim Steel and Dennis Singletary officiating.
Burial followed in the Glenwood Cemetery with Brown Funeral home directing. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Gideons.
Glenn Ford Gainey
Glenn Ford Gainey, 59, died June 30 at Flowers Hospital. He was born July 28, 1947, in Washington County to Montford Gainey and Allie Taylor.
He worked in construction and was a life-long resident of the area.
Survivors include two sisters and brothers-in-law, Annette and James (Jim) Foster of Mico, Texas, Montez and David Friedman of Stone Mountain, Ga.; several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held July 3 in the funeral home chapel.
Brown Funeral Home of Chipley was in charge of arrangements.
Ruth F. Smith
Ruth F. Smith, 88, died June 30 at Flowers Hospital. She was born Sept. 10, 1918, in Chipley to Jesse J. Griffin and Nancy M. Godwin.
Smith was a homemaker and an active member of Friendship Assembly of God Church in Cottondale.
Survivors include her husband, James Smith of Cottondale; one son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Jeanne Foxworth of Sebastian; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Shirley and Larry Ross of Ocala, Catherine Richardson of Cottondale, Bonnie Birge Monk and husband, Ronald, of Bonifay, Joanne and Timothy Elsass of Dunellon; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Dollie Alsobrooks of Chipley, Fannie Weakley of Ocala, Rachel and Verlon Wells of New Port Richey; 13 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral was held July 3 at Friendship Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Gary Stephens officiating.
Burial was in Glenwood Cemetery with Brown Funeral Home of Chipley directing.
Tabitha Lynn Thurman
Tabitha Lynn Thurman, 30, of Marianna died there June 30. She was a native and life-long resident of Jackson County.
Thurman was preceded in death by a sister, Jamie Keene.
Survivors include her husband, Charles Thurman; one son, Ryan Thurman; two daughters, Cheyenne Nicole Thurman and Haley Leeanne Thurman; her mother, Susie O’Bryan; one brother, Jeremy Keene; two sisters, Christina Case and Heather Smith, all of Marianna.
Services were held July 6 in the funeral home chapel with Dennis Creamer officiating.
Burial was in Cypress Cemetery with James & Sikes Funeral Home, Maddox Chapel of Marianna, directing.
Vera (Griffin) Pitts
Vern (Griffin) Pitts, 80, of Chipley died July 1 at her home. She was born Aug. 30, 1926, in Plant City to William Barry Griffin Jr. and Era (Carpenter) Griffin.
She was of the Methodist faith and was a member of First United Methodist Church in Chipley. She graduated from Dothan High School in 1946 and moved to Washington County.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Henry C. Pitts; her parents, and her stepmother, Vera C. Griffin, sisters, Ida Willard Griffin Watford and Alice Griffin; brothers, William B. Griffin Jr. and Arnold J. Griffin.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Carol Pitts and Chuck Walthall of Panama City Beach; two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry R. and Huzaette Pitts of Crestview, Travis W. and Cynthia Pitts of Chipley; a brother, Covin R. Shivers of Montgomery, Ala.; seven sisters, Marie Davis of Alexander City, Ala., Era Brown of Danville, Va., Martha Kennon of Fountain Inn, S.C., Alec Brackin and Elizabeth Baker of Auburn, Ala., Beatrice Davis of Birmington, Ala., and Ellen Harris of Dothan, Ala., three grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Services were held July 5 in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Jerry May officiating.
Burial was in Wausau Memorial Gardens in Wausau with Brown Funeral Home of Chipley directing.
