Elmer "Babe" Mann died Tuesday, April 22, 2008 in the Southeast Georgia Health System in Brunswick. Mr. Mann was born June 27, 1926 in Appling County, to the late David Henry Mann & the late Dovie Blanche Carter Mann. He was a member & a deacon of Memorial Free Will Baptist Church. Mr. Mann received Citizen of the year award in 1988 and Book of Golden Deeds award 1988 & 1989. Survivors include: His wife Joyce Blanton Mann of Surrency; 1 daughter & son-in-law, Marcia & Kenneth Brown of Surrency; 1 son & daughter-in-law, Gene & Beth Mann of Surrency; 1 sister, Shirley Priester of Jesup; 3 brothers, Earl Dennis Mann of Greensboro, N.C., Herman Mann of Orlando, Florida & Robert Mann of Surrency. 4 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild & several nieces & nephews also survive. William Dean Stone, age 74, died Friday, April 18, 2008 at Memorial Medical Center. Mr. Stone was born January 26, 1934 in Jeff Davis County to the late William Earlie Stone and Floy Burton Sellers Stone. He was a member and a Deacon of Oak View Baptist Church and had been involved in many Community affairs. John Lee (J.L.) Harris, Sr.
John Lee (J.L.) Harris, Sr. age 86 of Bristol, died Thursday, April 17, 2008 at his residence. Mr. Harris was a native and lifelong resident of Appling County, he was born September 26, 1921 to the late Hinton Lee Harris and the late Alief Thornton Harris. Mr. Harris was a member of Piney Grove Free Will Baptist Church where he sang in the choir, was former president of the church's Master's Men Chapter and also served as Sunday School Superintendent. He was an honorary member of the Alma Hunting Club were he was active for many years. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific theater. Mr. Harris is survived by his wife, Louise Hilton Harris of Bristol; 2 daughters, Judy H. Morris of Odum and Sheryl H. Ellis of Jesup; six sons, J. Donald Harris of Waycross, John L. Harris of Bristol, Ronald H. Harris of Umatilla, Fl, Gregory Harris and Robert R. Harris both of Bristol; and S. Douglas Harris of Baxley; 20 grandchildren, 19 Great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral Services were held Saturday, April 19, at Piney Grove Free Will Baptist Church. Marion Martin Reynolds, age 90 of Baxley, died Sunday Feb. 17, 2008 at his residence after an extended illness. Mr. Reynolds was born December 6, 1917 in Jeff Davis County to the late Orlando Chester "Sam" Reynolds and the late Nancy Gertrude Rentz Reynolds. He was a member of Spring Branch Baptist Church and was a Veteran of World War II. Mr. Reynolds was retired from the State Highway Department and was preceded in death by 3 sister, Nina Clance, Mary Sammy Connor, Oveda Johnson and a great-grandchild, Ryanna Carter. Bobby Couch Maddox age 82 of Baxley, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008 in the Appling Healthcare System Mr. Maddox was born May 19, 1925 in Pickens County to the late Bob Maddox & the late Edith Fairellen Couch Maddox. He was a member of Hopewell United Methodist Church and was retired from Southern Company. Mr. Maddox was a Veteran of the U.S. Army having served in W.W. II. He was preceded in death by a son, Darrell "Dusty" Hallman. He was born in Toombs County and lived most of his life in Appling County, He was a retired farmer and was a member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the United States Navy. He was preceded in death by his wife Jackie Reese and was the son of the late Claude L. Reese and the late Luvency Dukes Reese. Ranville Johnson Fossett, Jr., age 80 of Alma died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008 in Bacon County Hospital. Mr. Fossett was born August 23, 1927 in Appling County, to the late Ranville Johnson Fossett, Sr., and the late Nellie Mae Morris Fossett. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Baxley and was retired from General Motors Plant. Mr. Fossett was a Veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Fossett is survived by his wife, Rosa J. Mrs. Townsend was born November 28, 1933 in Appling County, to the late Honor Eugene Lott & the late Ruth Mariah Sapp Lott. She was a member of Midway Baptist Church and a retired Teacher for 30 years and a Board of Education member 4 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cliff Townsend. Rilla Lorene Burroughs Beck
Mrs. Beck was born June 3, 1914, in Madison County, to the late Lawtan and Ella Harris Burroughs. She is a member of Dunn Memorial Baptist Church and was a Nursing Assistant at Appling General Hospital before retiring. She had retired in Baxley, for the past 60 years. Survivors include: Four daughters: Sara Freeman (Oran), Betty Colston (Jack), Grace Twiggs, and Glenda Mims, and one son: Felix Beck (Vicki). Thirteen grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Also surviving is one friend Jean Cooper. Honorary Pallbearers are Employees of Appling Convalescent Center and the Adult Sunday School Class at Dunn Memorial Baptist Church and all friends in attendance.
