Georgia Death Records, 1914-1940

Emma Causey Cain

Emma Causey Cain, age 83, died Monday, June 15, 2009, at her residence in Appling County. Born February 3, 1926, to William Albert and Annie Branch Causey, she was a lifelong resident of Appling County. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, William Barney Cain. Her life's work was being a homemaker and mother. She was a member of Zoar Baptist Church. Mrs. Cain is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, William and Toni Cain of Baxley; eight daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy and Dale Atkins of Baxley, Debbie and Tony Stewart of Alpharetta, Shirley and Tommy Phillips of Baxley, Kay and Larry Smith of St. Simons and Baxley, Jackie and Robert Herrington of Baxley, Sandra and Billy Miles of Waycross, Pat Hayes of Waycross, Bonnette Smith of Eastman; two sisters, Liza (Walt) Ridgdill of Augusta and Bonnie Tanner of Alma; three brothers, Bill Causey of Augusta, Aaron Causey of Glennville and Chap (JoAnn) Causey of Baxley; Sister-in-law, Evelyn Haymons; two brothers-in-law, Buck (Betty) Cain and Buddy (Nellie Faye) Cain. Twenty-three grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, and members of the Vertice and Elijah Coleman Family also survive. Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 17, at 11:00 a.m. at Zoar Baptist Church with Rev. Wayne Bennett and Rev. Ron Ross officiating. Interment followed in the Zoar Cemetery. Active pallbearers were sons-in-law: Dale Atkins, Tony Stewart, Tommy Phillips, Larry Smith, Robert Herrington and Billy Miles. Arrangements were under the direction of Davis E. Miles Funeral Home.

William P. "Doc" Miller

William P. "Doc" Miller, age 72, died Tuesday, June 9th, 2009 in Chandler Hospital, in Savannah. Mr Miller was born January 25, 1937 in Jeff Davis County and had resided in Appling County, for most of his life. He was a retired Millwright and had been employed by R. B. Pump Company before his retirement. He was a member of the Satilla Missionary Baptist Church and was a veteran of the United States Army. He was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Ruth Miller, a son, Billy Miller and a daughter Missy Miller. He was the son of the late Herbert Miller, Sr and the late Catherine Delilah Medders. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly and Wayne Branch of Baxley; two sons and a daughter-in-law, James and Glenda Roddenberry of Irvington, GA: and Dwayne Roddenberry of Jacksonville, FL; Sister, Yvonne Spikes of Baxley; brother, Herbert Miller, Jr. and wife Mary of Jesup; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services were held Friday, June 12, at 11:00 a.m. at Satilla Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. M. L. Ricks, Rev. Steve Dowless, and Rev. Earl Wiggins officiating. Interment followed in the Satilla Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Durwin Griffin, Russell Griffin, Randy Medders, Jeff Herrington, Dewey Altman and Donald Bellew Musical selections were rendered by Shirley Altman, Bryan Weaver, Julie Osborne and Susan Herrington. Honorary pallbearers are all family and friends attending the funeral service. Arrangement were under the direction of David E. Miles Funeral Home.

Waylon Earl Taylor

Mr. Waylon Earl Taylor died Thursday, June 18, 2009 at his residence. Mr. Taylor was born July 17, 1940 in Appling County, to the late Earl Nathaniel Taylor and the late Mary Oletha Medders Taylor. He was a member of Satilla Baptist Church. Mr. Taylor was retired from the Appling County Road Department and was preceded in death by a daughter, Tina Marie Whitner, a grandson, Zachary Wayne Moor and brother Nathaniel Phillip Taylor. Survivors include: 3 daughters, Vickie Lynn Oliver of Fernandina, Flordia, Tammy Sue Taylor and Elmer Orin Dixon and Tonia Elise and Timothy Kim Weaver all of Baxley; 4 sons, Waylon Earl and Tara Lynn Slaughter, Timothy Waylon and Victoria Marie Taylor, Travis Earl and Amy Dale Taylor all of Baxley and Toma Wesley Taylor. 1 sister, Peggy Sue Griffin of Baxley, 1 brother, Roy Malcolm Taylor of Baxley. Several grandchildren and great-grandchildren also survive. Memorial services will be Sunday, June 20, 2009 at 2:00 pm from the Chapel of Swain Funeral Home. Minister: Rev. Lonnie Weaver Visitation will be held one hour prior to the memorial service at 1:00 pm. The family will assemble at the home, 149 Norman Circle. Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.

Willie Virgil McCall

Mr. Willie Virgil McCall died June 14, 2009, at his residence after extended illness. Mr. McCall was born September 7, 1926, in Appling County, to the late John Hampton and Kathrine Rebecca O'Quinn McCall. He was a member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon. Mr. McCall was a member of Consolation Baptist Association where he served as a song leader for his home Church and various other churches in Appling and surrounding counties for 32 years. He was a member of Appling County Young Farmers and Appling County Stockmen's Association. Survivors include: his wife of 64 years, Hilda Aspinwall McCall of Surrency; 3 daughters and sons-in-law, Kay and Neil Eunice of Bristol, Pam and Glynn Cranford of Macon and Trish White of Surrency. grandchildren, Ken Eunice, Dana "Eric" Fletcher, Garrett "Jena" Cranford, Katie Cranford and Lance White. A host of nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at 3:00 pm from the Mt Vernon Baptist Church. Mr. McCall will lie in state one hour to funeral hour.
Interment will follow in Mt Vernon Baptist Church Cemetery.
Ministers: Rev. Darrell Quinn and Rev. Glynn Cranford.
Active Pallbearers: Jimmy Lee McCall, Eric Fletcher, Chad Kent, Douglas Griffis, Chris Griffis, and Warren Griffis.
Honorary Pallbearers: Mt. Vernon Baptist Church Joy Sunday School Class, Deacons and Wives, Mr. and Mrs. Curtis McMillan.
Visitation will be Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at Mt Vernon Baptist Church from 6:00 until 8:00pm.
Memorials: Remembrances may be made to Mt. Vernon Baptist Church Music Fund, c/o Lamar Turner, 459 G W Turner Rd, Baxley, GA 31513.
The family will assemble at the home, 72-7 Hwy 121 SE.
Musical selections were rendered by Jonathan Hickox and Annette Lee.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.

Dorine C. Nash

Dorine C. Nash, age 79, died Monday, August 31, 2009, at her residence. She was born August 12, 1930 in Appling County, and had resided here all of her life. She was a home maker and a member of Satilla Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, W C. Nash, daughter Renee Nash Scott and two half brothers, Walter Crosby and Otto Crosby. She was the daughter of the late George Crosby and Dollie Shipes Crosby. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law Vickie and Daniel Adams of Eatonton; sons and daughter-in-law, William G "Billy" and Lee Ann Nash of Duddley, and Michael Nash of Baxley; half-brothers, Steve Crosby of Baxley, Barry Crosby of Hazlehurst, Leon Crosby of New Madrid Missouri, Jackson Crosby of Omaha, NE; seven grandchildren and four great- grandchildren also survive Visitation will be from 6 to 9 P.M. Tuesday, at David E. Miles Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 P.M. Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at Satilla Baptist Church with Rev. Roger Taylor and Rev. Earnest Dyal officiating. Interment will follow in the Satilla Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers are Albert Crosby, Robert Crosby, Brian Nash, Brad Scott, Wilbur Lynch, and Rusty Nash. Arrangements are under the direction of David E. Miles Funeral Home.

Dorothy Smoot McGowan

Dorothy Smoot McGowan, age 62, died Thursday, August 27, 2009 at her residence. She was born May 25, 1947 in Palatka, Florida and had resided in Baxley, for the past 16 years. She was a retired security guard and had been employed with Security Force Inc. before her retirement. She was of the Baptist faith and was preceded in death by her husband James J. McGowan. She was the daughter of the late Lonnie Milton Smoot and the late Thelma Cooper Smoot. She is survived by a daughter, Tammy McGowan of Baxley: granddaughters, Tina McGowan of Baxley, Tonya Wooten of Atlanta, Rita Webb of Vidalia, Irma Stallings and Angel Williams: grandsons, Marty Juraz of Atlanta, William Bruce McGowen of FL and James Williams: two great-grandchildren, Chole and Jaden McGowan both of Baxley: two sisters, Betty Jean Corembe of Hastings, FL and Katherine Pitts of Augusta, Ga.; two brothers, Charles Alfred Smoot of Wood River, IL. And Leroy Smoot of Atlalnta, Ga honorary brother, Harold Starnes of Baxley; Step-daughter, Sierra Baxley and Step-grandson, Tommy Wayne Baxley of Baxley; Daughter-in-law and husband, Susie and Matthew Blake of Baxley. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 P.M. Friday at David E. Miles Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday in the Chapel of David E. Miles Funeral Home with Rev. Gary Conger officiating. Interment will follow in the Hazlehurst City Cemetery. Active pallbearers are Brad Hollis, Jonathan Tyner, Charles A. Smoot, Aaron Smith, James Allen McGowan and Clint Baxley. Honorary pallbearers are Josh Selph, James O'Neal, Wallace Baxley and Jerry Youngblood. David E. Miles Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Alma Beecher

Mrs. Alma Beecher died Thursday, August 27, 2009 in the Pavilion. Mrs. Beecher was born October 23, 1912 in Appling County, to the late William Lewis and Addie Carter. She was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt. Mrs. Beecher was preceded in death by her husband, Collis "Bay" Beecher and a daughter, Zula Branch. Survivors are: 4 daughters and sons-in-law, Estelle McLain, Carolyn and Grady Branch, Merle Mason and Patsy and Buck Buchannan all of Baxley; 1 son and daughter-in-law, Russell and JoAnn Beecher of Baxley; 2 sisters, Addie Belle Gunter of Augusta and Betty Jane Moore of Maryland; brother, Wilton Carter of Baxley; Son-in-law Bill Branch of Baxley. 12 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, 8 great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be Sunday, August 30, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. from the Woodlawn Baptist Church.
Interment: Omega Cemetery Minister: Rev. Mike Brown and Rev. Brad Park
Active Pallbearers: Johnny McLain, Earl McLain, Lance McLain, Channing Branch, Ricky Beecher, Eddie Rentz, Damian Griffin, Mike Jones All grandsons and granddaughters are Honorary Escort.
Honorary Pallbearers: Deacons and Wives of Woodlawn Baptist Church, Dr. Errol Graham, B Hall Pavilion Staff, Virginia Hamm, and Linda Ogden. Visitation will be Saturday, August 29, 2009 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Swain Funeral Home.
The family will assemble at the home, 376 George Craven Road.
Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.

Lawannia Vivian Medders Clark

Lawannia Vivian Medders Clark, age 65, died Saturday, August 22, 2009 in the Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida. She was born March 8, 1944 in Appling County, and had resided in Savannah, before moving to Lake Butler, FL. She was a home maker and the daughter of the late Hugh Dorsey Medders and the late Dorothy Mae Teston Medders. She is survived by two sons, Kenny Clark and Hugh Darrell Stevens of Lake Butler, FL; two sisters, Linda Medders and Retha Ann Dickson of Lake Butler, FL; two brothers, Benjamin Roy Medders of West Point, GA and Glenn Medders of Rincon, GA. Funeral services were held at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, in the Chapel of David E. Miles Funeral Home with Brother Pete Samples officiating. Interment followed in the Omega Cemetery. Active pallbearers are Ouentin Royce Medders, Christopher Lariscy, Chris May, Bruce Dickson and William Loparena. David E. Miles Funeral Home was in charge of funeral arrangements.

Bonnie Bell Horne Kidd

Ms. Bonnie Bell Horne Kidd died Friday, August 14, 2009 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Savannah. Ms. Kidd was born in Baxley, GA, on July 26, 1936 to the late Mr. Willie Addison Horne and the late Mrs. Essie Mae Williams Horne. She was a member of Friendship Congregational Church and had lived in Appling County, her whole life. Ms. Kidd was retired from Hazlehurst Mills in Hazlehurst, GA. She was also preceded in death by two brothers: Hugh Emory Horne and William Russell Horne. Survivors include: sisters, Jo Lene Horne and Jeavene Horne Hamilton of Lexington, SC.
Funeral Services will be held Monday, August 17, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. from the chapel of Swain Funeral home.
Minister: Rev. Rick Brown
Active Pallbearers: E.C. Everett, Deryl Everett, Rhell Butler, Bill Kicklighter, Carley Cranford, and Jerry Turner.

Jewell Carolyn Boyette

Mrs. Jewell Carolyn Boyette died Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at her residence. Mrs. Boyette was born December 5, 1918 in Appling County, to the late Perry Ardle Watson and the late Minnie Lightsey Watson. She was a member of Big Creek Primitive Baptist Church. Mrs. Boyette was a dedicated mother and grandmother. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Lawanna and H.F. Johnson of Baxley; 2 sons, J.W. Boyette and Ronnie Boyette both of Bristol; sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, Betty and Bobby Bryant of Helen, Marie Watson of Brunswick. 6 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral Services will be held Thursday, August 20, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. from Big Creek Primitive Baptist Church.
Body will lie in state one hour prior to funeral services.
Interment will follow in the Piney Grove Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery
Minister: Elder Jerry Lightsey
Active Pallbearers: Joey Boyette, Mark Boyette, Alan Johnson, Jamie Williford, Greg Bull, and Michael Betz.
