Isaac Ardle Lightsey

Isaac Ardle Lightsey, infant son of Brian Ardle and Ursula Ann Lightsey of Screven, died Monday, August 10, 2009 in the Memorial Medical Center in Savannah.
Graveside services will be Friday, August 14, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. from the Big Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery
Minister: Rev. Mylan Brookins
Survivors are: maternal grandparents, Gary and Carol Murray of Blackshear; paternal grandfather, Ardle and the late Cora Lee Lightsey of Odum; maternal great-grandfather, James C. Alovin Boyett and the late Addie LaForrest of Patterson; maternal great-grandmother, Christine Reeves Murray and the late Thomas Murray of Blackshear. Visitation will be Thursday 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Swain Funeral Home. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.

Jimmy Courson

Jimmy Courson, age 68, died Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at his residence. He was born March 10, 1941 in Appling County, and had resided here most of his life. He was a police officer for thirteen years and had been employed with the Baxley Police Department and the Alma Police Department He was a retired truck driver and was employed with Williams Brother Trucking Company before his retirement. He was the son of the late Warren Courson and the late Katie Crosby Courson. He is survived by his wife, Ann Courson of Baxley; a son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Pam Craven of Baxley, three daughters and sons-in-law, Lynn White of Baxley, Marsha and Randy Thomas of Baxley and Tracey and Lamar Burdette of Savannah; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Lee and Clifton Taylor of Savannah, Odell Dyal of Baxley, and Hilda and Barney Hayward of Swainsboro; ten grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services were held Friday, August 7, 2009,at 11:00 a.m. at Satilla Baptist Church with Rev. Tommy Davis and Rev. M. L. Ricks officiating. Interment followed in the Hopewell Methodist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers were David Earl Courson, George M. Crosby, Albert Dyal, Willie Dyal, Jr., Mitchell Taylor and Barney Hayward, Jr. Honorary pallbearers were all family and friends attending the funeral service. Musical selections were rendered by the Satilla Baptist Church Choir. Arrangements were under the direction of David E. Miles Funeral Home.-

Kenneth "Sam" Hall

Mr. Kenneth "Sam" Hall died Friday, August 7, 2009. A native and lifelong resident of Appling County, Mr. Hall was born March 29, 1932 to the late Wallace and Dosie McDaniel Hall. He was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Norris and brothers, Lawrence and Bud Hall. Mr. Hall was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Survivors include: his daughter, Pam Barker of Pooler; 1 sister, JoAnn Stafford of Ludowici; 2 brothers, Wallace "Pete" Hall of Baxley, and Quinton Hall of Brunswick; 2 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild also survives.
Funeral Services will be held Sunday, August 9, at 3:00 pm from the chapel of Swain Funeral Home
Interment will follow in the Bethel Untied Methodist Church Cemetery

Active Pallbearers: Tim Stafford, James Barker, Ronnie Hunter, Mike Hunter, David Carter, and Louis Eason
Honorary Pallbearers are the staff of the Pavilion
Visitation will be Saturday evening from 6 until 8 pm at Swain Funeral home.
Family will receive friends at the home of Wallace "Pete" Hall, 320 Sam Hall Road.
Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.

Dorothy Ann Thomas

Mrs. Dorothy Ann Thomas died Sunday, August 2, 2009 in St. Joseph Hospital in Savannah. Mrs. Thomas was born July 22, 1947 in Appling County, to the late John Hewey Kersey and Isabell Mincey Daggett. She was a member of Riverside Baptist Church. Mrs. Thomas loved her grandchildren, Kayla Morris, Mathew Thomas, Dillon Thomas, Joclyne Thomas, Caitlin Thomas, Raven Miles, Keaton Thomas, and Preston Thomas. Survivors include: her husband, Robert Lee Thomas of Baxley; 3 sons, Jeffrey Lee Thomas, Jamie Thomas and Jerome Thomas all of Baxley; 2 sisters and brother-in-law, Betty Jean Carter and Mildred and Wayman Stone all of Baxley; 5 brothers and sister-in-law, John David Kersey, Willis Clifton Kersey, Bobby Charles Kersey, Jake Earl and Kerri Kersey and Roger Dale Evans, all of Baxley; 8 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and 20 nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. from the Chapel of Swain Funeral Home under the direction of Rev. Ernest Dyal. Interment: Asbury United Methodist Church Cemetery
Active Pallbearers: Nephews, Randy Evans, Clifton Kersey, Dale Evans, Justin Kersey, Shawn Kersey, and Brandon Carter.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, 6:00 until 8:00 at Swain Funeral Home Family will assemble at the home, 635 Alvin Moody Road.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Swain Funeral Home, Inc.

Lucille Sellers Davis

Lucille Sellers Davis, age 92, who passed away Saturday, February 21, 2009 at The Pavilion. She was born September 25, 1916 in Appling County, and had resided here all of her life. She was a homemaker and a member of the Zion Missionary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband Emory Sellers, and a grandchild Kindra Eason Johnson. She was the daughter of the late Jim Hopkins and the late Gertrude Beecher Hopkins. She is survived by three daughter and sons-in-law, Faye and Cliff Griffin of Baxley, Ann and Richard Eason of Baxley, and Sharon and Danny Head of Columbus: a sister Lorene Wood of Baxley; fifteen grandchildren, thirty-three great-grandchildren and twenty-nine great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Monday at Zion Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Stone, Rev. Virgil Carter and Rev. Paul Dubberly officiating. Interment will follow in the Zion Church Cemetery. Mrs Davis will be placed in the church one hour prior to the funeral service to lie in state. Active pallbearers are Jeremy Pittman, Jeffery Davis, Chester Ahl, Allen Ahl, Billy Joe Peacock and Trevor Johnson. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Teresa Cezar, the Staff of the Pavilion and all friends in attendance. Musical selections will be rendered by James Carter and Fredia Jones. Funeral arrangements were under the direction David E. Miles Funeral Home

Robert Edward Comstock

Robert Edward Comstock, age 64 of Hazlehurst died Friday, February 20, 2009. He was born October 3, 1944 in Dyer, Tennessee and had lived in Hazlehurst for the last 19 years. His parents were the late Fred Comstock and Willie Dean Barron Comstock. Mr. Comstock was employed as a classification supervisor at Coffee Correctional in Nicholls. He is survived by a wife Donna Herrington Comstock, a daughter: Robyn Grosenbacher and husband Jeramie of Aurora, Missouri; three step-children: Jamie Parlor and wife Charee of Hazlehurst, Michaela Parlor of Hazlehurst, and Kristin Parlor of Vidalia; five grandchildren: Ally Brighton, Denby Grosenbacher, Ariana Lairsey, and Hayden and Peyten Parlor; and one sister Judy Griner and husband Ralph of Woodstock, Georgia.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, February 22 in the Chapel of David E. Miles Funeral Home with Rev. Marvin Holladay, Rev. Steve Toler, and Steve Evans.
Interment followed in the Omega Cemetery in Baxley.
Active pallbearers are Ken Floyd, David Trowell, Tim Callaway, Terell Acree, Michael Foster, and Johnny Thrift.
Honorary pallbearers are Coffee Correctional Employees, Moores Employees, David and Mary Burke, John Turner, Ray Turner, Roy Wigley, Jeff Hannah, Brent Simpson, Kenny Coward, Shondria Coffee, and Patricia Williams.
Musical Selections were rendered by Debbie Taylor and Kenneth Herrington.
Arrangements are under the direction of David E. Miles Funeral Home.

Frank Herrington

Mr. Frank Herrington died Thursday, February 19, 2009 at his residence. Mr. Herrington was born October 26, 1934 in Appling County, to the late Enoch Clayton and Alice Mae Carter Herrington. He was a Vietnam Veteran of the United States Air Force with 20 years of service. He retired from Southern Company at Plant Hatch as a Regulatory Compliance Officer. Mr. Herrington was a small business Christmas Tree Owner. Survivors include: His wife, Diane Herrington of Baxley; 3 Daughters, Zoe Herrington of Kansas City, KS, Nicky Herrington of Baxley, and Allison Mennella of Inverness, Florida. 2 sons, Allen Herrington of Lyons and Joshua Beasley of Baxley; 4 grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Monday, February 23, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. from the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glenville, GA with full Military Rites.
Minister: Chaplain David Dukes
Visitation will be Sunday, February 22, 2009 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Swain Funeral Home.
The family will assemble at the residence, 500 Azalea Road.
Swain Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Neal Youmans

Mr. Neal Youmans died Friday, February 13, 2009 in Charleston. Mr. Youmans was born June 23, 1922 in Appling County, to the late John Edwards and Jennie Lou Milton Youmans. He was a member of Glendale Baptist Church in Brunswick and a member of the Carpenters Union. He was preceded in death by his wife, Uldene Tillman Youmans and a son, Denny Youmans. Survivors include: a daughter, Joice Youmans of Brunswick; son Ralph Youmans of Heiskell, TN; granddaughter, Ashley Youmans of Heiskell, TN; 2 brothers, Dr. Charles Youmans of Johns Island, SC and Dr. Julian R. Youmans of Davis, California. Honorary Pallbearers: Carpenters Union #865 and Members of Glendale Baptist Church, Brunswick
Graveside services will be held Saturday, February 21 at 11:00 am from Ten Mile Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Memorials: remembrances may be made to Ten Mile Baptist Church, Baxley, GA or Glendale Baptist Church, Brunswick, GA.

Ruth King Sikes

Mrs. Ruth King Sikes died Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at her residence after an extended illness. Mrs. Sikes was born December 7, 1932 in Wayne County, to the late John and Martha Strickland King. She was a member of the First Baptist Church where she was active in the adult choir. She was a court bailiff for 20 years and was a substitute teacher for several years. Mrs. Sikes as a member of the Eastern Star #363. Survivors include: her husband, Donnie R. Sikes, Sr. of Baxley; 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Cecelia and Kerry Reese of Baxley, and Tempie and Jimmy Anderson of Jesup; 2 sons and a daughter-in-law, Donnie Sikes, Jr. of Baxley, and David and Laury Sikes of Lawrenceville; sister-in-law, Trudy King of Blackshear; 1 niece, Glenese Oppel of West Palm Beach, FL. 1 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Active Pallbearers: Dallas Sikes, James Anderson, Les Grimm, Jesse Scott, Mike Serrano, and Ronnie Carter.

Body will lie in state one hour prior to funeral service.
Interment: Ten Mile Creek Baptist Church Cemetery

Visitation will be Thursday, February 19, 2009 6:00 until 9:00 pm at Swain Funeral Home

Judge Mershon Tomberlin ,

Judge Mershon Tomberlin died Sunday, February 15, 2009 in the Appling Healthcare System. Mr. Tomberlin was born on July 14, 1931. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Ellen Paulk Tomberlin and his father, Riley Tomberlin. He was a member of First Baptist Church. He is a Veteran of the United States Army, a long time business man of Baxley, and was most recently the owner and manager of Mershon's Qwik Chik. Survivors include: Daughter, Kristi Lynn (Mickey) Aldridge; Son, Rcik (Angela) Tomberlin; Sisters, Minnie Faye McDonald, Rilene Folsome, Jenny Strickland; grandchildren, Tiffany Tomberlin and Christopher Aldridge; A host of nieces and nephews.
Active Pallbearers: Jerry Shumans, John (Bubba) Price, Raymond Ballard, Mike Shumans, Christopher Aldridge, John Pearson, Mark Shumans, and Tiffany Tomberlin.
Honorary Pallbearers: The Pavilion Nursing Home Staff and Employees and friends of Joe's Qwik Stop.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. from the chapel of Swain Funeral Home.
Ministers: Rev. Danny Tomberlin, Rev. Rick Brown, and Rev. Eddie Tomberlin
Interment: Tomberlin Paulk Cemetery
Visitation will be held Monday, February 16, 2009 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Swain Funeral Home.
The family will assemble at the home of Kristi Aldridge, 260 Johns Lane.
