Georgia Death Records, 1914-1940

Mary E. Lockhart

Mary E. Lockhart died Friday, February 13, 2009 in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. Mrs. Lockhart was born July 10, 1927 in Dakota, Turner County, Georgia near Ashburn. She was living in Moncks Corner, SC with her niece: Ola Mae Wilcox and her husband Earl at the time of her death. She is a former resident of Brunswick and Glynn County, Georgia. She lived the last years of her live in Baxley, and Appling County. Mary E. Lockhart was the daughter of the Reverend Charles Crisp Owens and Ethel Lee Owens. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years: Fred L. Lockhart, her sister Laura House, brothers Charles C. Allen, and Johnnie B. Owens. She is survived by a son Dwight Steven Lockhart and his wife Martha of Warner Robins, GA., a daughter Elizabeth Oleta Schurle and her husband David of Baxley, five grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Lockhart was a member and past Worthy Matron of Chapter #363 Order of the Eastern Star and was the treasurer until she could no longer attend the meetings. She was a former member of the Bethlehem Shrine #4, Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem. She retired from the Appling General Hospital where she worked as a Medicare/Medicaid Coordinator. Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at 10:00 A.M. in the chapel of David E. Miles Funeral Home with William Wilcox and John Wilcox officiating. Members of Chapter #363 Order of the Eastern Star also participated in the service. Graveside services were held the same day at 3:00 P.M. in the Palmetto Cemetery in Glynn County. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Palmetto Health Hospice, P.O. Box 50820, Summerville, SC 29458-0820. Mary E. Lockhart was admired and loved by all who knew her and will be sorely missed by family and friends. David E. Miles Funeral Home is in charge of all funeral arrangements.

Steve Carlton Allen

Mr. Steve Carlton Allen died Thursday, February 12, 2009 in the Appling Healthcare System. Mr. Allen was born December 9, 1953 in Savannah, to Alva Grace Kicklighter Allen and the Late James Carlton Allen. He was preceded in death by his brother, Gary Allen and brother-in-law, Jimmy Reynolds. Survivors include: His Wife, Donna Hughes Allen of Baxley; Mother, Alva Grace Allen of Baxley; sister, Cindy A. Reynolds, of Baxley; 2 brothers, Phil Allen and Mark Allen of Baxley; brother-in-law, George F. List; a special sister-in-law, Teresa Dees; several nieces and nephews; and his dogs, Chynna, Penny, Gipsy, and Bear. Active Pallbearers: Josh Reynolds, John Reynolds, Phillip Allen, Chris Allen, Chad Allen, and Glen Gay Honorary Pallbearers: Staff of Georgia Home Health Care, Mike and Shelia Rentz, Tony Harrell, Jerry Sellers, Diane Bennett, and Dr. Teresa Cezar Interment: Appling Memorial Gardens Funeral Services will be held Sunday, February 15, at 3:00 pm from the chapel of Swain Funeral Home. Visitation will be Saturday evening from 6 until 8 pm at Swain Funeral Home. The family will assemble at the home of Cindy Reynolds, 57 Yvonne Lane. Swain Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Charles "Chicken Man" Treadaway

Mr. Charles "Chicken Man" Treadaway died Wednesday, February 11, 2009 in the Appling Healthcare System. Mr. Treadaway was born November 9, 1932 in Fulton County to the late Cicero and Nora Williamson Treadaway. He was a member of Liberty Baptist Church in Lyons, GA. Mr. Treadaway was employed by Piggly Wiggly of Vidalia, Co-owner of Chic-King of Lyons and Vidalia and retired from GA Power at Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Plant. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Woods Treadaway. Survivors include: 3 daughters and sons-in-law, Laura and Tim Kauger of Hazlehurst, Paula and Jim Munsey of Lyons and Melodie Anglin of Lawrenceville; 2 Sons, Greg Treadaway and Paul Treadaway both of Surrency; 6 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Active Pallbearers: Billy Woods, Emory Mixon, Dennis Bishop, Anthony Cavagnaro, Ralph Cavagnaro, and Neal Burke Jr. Honorary Pallbearers: Southern Care Hospice Staff, The Pavilion Staff, Dr. Orlando Fernando, Appling Medical Group, and Mary Yawn. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, February 14, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Swain Funeral Home. Interment: Lee Woods Family Cemetery. Minister: Rev. Creig Smith Visitation: Will be Friday, February 13, 2009 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Swain Funeral Home. Walton Cornelius "Bill" Rentz

Mr. Walton Cornelius "Bill" Rentz died Wednesday, February 11, 2009 in the Pavilion. Mr. Rentz was born July 26, 1934 in Appling County, to the late George Henry and Addie Louise Reddish Rentz. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church. Mr. Rentz was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served in the Korean War and the Vietnam conflict. He was a member J W Farris Masonic Lodge #356. Survivors include: His Wife, Jacqueline Rentz of Baxley; Daughter, Michele Rentz of Florida; 4 sons, Robert Ed Rentz of Jacksonville, Florida, Matthew Lynn Kelley of Greenville, Michael Rentz of Atlanta and Mark Rentz of Hawaii; Sisters, Lavonia Earlene Rentz of Loganville, Martheta Lightsey of Bristol; Brothers, Richard Jack Rentz and Nathan W. Rentz. Active Pallbearers: Brandon Lightsey, Brooks Lightsey, Charlie Lightsey, Todd Rentz, Eddie Rentz, Bobby Rentz, Joey Rentz, Chris Rentz, and Austin Rentz. Honorary Pallbearers: Jack Rentz, Nathan Rentz, Mike Rentz, Lynn Kelly, Hugh Lightsey, Wayne Lang, and Ed Rentz. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, February 14, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. from the Faith Baptist Church. Body will lie in state one hour prior to funeral service. Interment: Memorial Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery with full Military and Masonic Rites. Ministers: Rev. Gary Conger and Pastor Keith Simmons. Janice Sandra Murray

Mrs. Janice Sandra Murray died Friday, February 6, 2009 in the Community Hospice in Vidalia. Mrs. Murray was born July 1, 1936 in Topsham County to the late Henry Larkin Durgan and late Sarah Vanell Stephens Durgan. She was a member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church and was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. Mrs. Murray served and ministered to many employees of the Appling County Board of Education where she retired from the Fourth District School Cafeteria. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Carlton Murray and a son, Michael Durgan. Survivors include: 1 granddaughter, Jamie Tillman, 1 grandson, Chad Reichert, and a great-granddaughter, Taylor Tillman. Active Pallbearers: Freddie Murray, Vernon Thornton, Kenny Gilbert, Greg Murray, Neil Eunice, and Harold Lynch Honorary Pallbearers: Senior Adult Sunday School Class of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church. Funeral Services will be held Friday, February 13, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. from the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church. Interment: Church Cemetery Minister: Rev. Darrell Quinn Visitation will be Friday, February 13th at 1:00 pm until funeral hour from Mt. Vernon Baptist Church. Swain Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Marvin L. McIntyre

Marvin L. McIntyre, age 74, died Sunday, at his residence. He was born in Wayne County, and had resided in Appling County, for the past forty-six years. He was a Millwright and a member of Local Union 256 in Brunswick. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and a member of the Baxley Church of God. He was the son of the late Charles H. McIntyre and the late Eula Anderson McIntyre. He is survived by his wife, Peggy McIntyre of Baxley; a son and daughter-in-law Marty and Angie McIntyre of Baxley; a granddaughter, Ashley Nichole McIntyre of Baxley; sister, Emilylene Madray of Odom; brother, James McIntyre of Mobil, AL. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 P.M. Monday at David E. Miles Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, at the Baxley Church of God with Rev. Lamar Lee officiating. Interment will follow in the Piney Grove Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers are Scotty Herrin, Randy Herrin, Kenny Herrin, Greg Jernigan, Jerry Deen and Shaver Lightsey. Honorary pallbearers are all friends attending the funeral service. The family will assemble at the residence at 74 Ash Street. David E. Miles Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements.

John R. Rushing

Mr. John R. Rushing died Tuesday, February 3, 2009 in the Appling Healthcare System after an extended illness. Mr. Rushing was born September 15, 1918 in Glennville to the late John Robert and Mattie Smith Rushing. He was a member of the Baxley Church of God and was a veteran of the United States Army. He was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Rodger Rushing, a grandson, Rodger Shane Atkinson, and 3 brothers, Marcus, Garnet, and Robert Rushing. Survivors include: His wife, Esther Johnson Rushing of Baxley; 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Gerald Hood of Alma, and Debbie and Mike Carter of Baxley; 1 son and daughter-in-law, Matt and Gail Rushing of Surrency, 1 sister, Opal Purvis of Glennville; 8 grandchildren and 25 nieces and nephews also survive. Active Pallbearers: Jason Rodger Rushing, Jerimie Keith Hood, Mitchell Leon Rushing, Adrian Paul Atkinson, Jerad Livingston Stone, Kenneth Taff Vaughn, Kaleb Williams. Honorary Pallbearers: Health Dept. Home Care Nurses, Adult Sunday School Class of the Baxley Church of God, nieces and nephews, and employees of Stan's Pharmacy Funeral Services will be held Friday, February 6, at 2:00 pm from the Baxley Church of God. Body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the funeral service. Interment: Red Oak Baptist Church Cemetery Ministers: Rev. Lamar Lee and Rev. R.M. Warren Visitation will be Thursday evening from 6 until 9 pm at Swain Funeral Home. Cynthia Hank

Ms. Cynthia Hank, age 46, died Monday in Reidsville, Ga. She was born September 16, 1962 in Pueblo Colorado and had resided in Georgia for eight years and in Reidsville for the past four months. She was employed as a correctional officer with the Georgia Department of Corrections at Georgia State Prison in Reidsville. She was the daughter of the late Richard Wilcox and the late Edna Hutcheson Wilcox. She is survived by three sons, Patrick Hutcheson of Baxley, Timothy Bradwell of Canyon, TX. and Bion Hank of Reidsville; Daughter, Morgan Hank, of Reidsville; Sister, Christine Hudson of Buffalo, Wyoming; Step-father, Vernon Hutchson of Alma GA.; two grandchildren, Willow Bradwell and Kalie Hampton also survive. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 P.M. Thursday at David E. Miles Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday in the chapel of David E. Miles Funeral Home with Rev. Tommy Daniels officiating. Interment will follow in the Ten Mile Cemetery. Active pallbearers are Major Doug Williams, Sgt. Tony Crapps, Sgt Jody Clayton, Sgt. Keith Campbell, Lt. Tommy Godwin and Officer Darrell Gordon: Honorary pallbearers are the Staff of Georgia State Prision, Jeff Revera and Paul Mitchell. The family is assembling at the home of Tony Crapps at 9 Oak Ave, Reidsville, GA. David E. Miles Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Lotice Yawn

Mrs. Lotice Yawn died Monday, February 2, 2009 in the Pavilion after an extended illness. Mrs. Yawn was born August 21, 1918 in Appling County, to the late Hinton Beasley and the late Lela Moody Beasley. She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church. Mrs. Yawn was retired from the Appling County Board of Education. Survivors include: Her daughter, Shirley Carter of Hilliard, Florida; 2 Sons and Daughter-in-law, Earl and Karen Yawn of Baxley, Garry and Louise Yawn of Hilliard, Florida; 3 Sisters, Wynell Kennedy, Mary Lou Beckworth and Vonice Beck all of Baxley. 7 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Active Pallbearers: Mathew McCulloum, Lance Kennedy, Michael Durden, Melvin Carter, Herschel Miles, Robert Yawn. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. from Asbury United Methodist Church. Mrs. Yawn will lie in state one hour prior to funeral service. Interment: Church Cemetery Minister: Rev. Barry Teutsch Visitation will be Tuesday, February 3, 2009 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Swain Funeral Home. Therus Vernon Carter Barber of Jesup, age 87, died Wednesday, December 2, 2009 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Jesup. He was a native of Appling County, and was born July 1, 1922 to the late Joe Barber and the late Elize Mae Higginbotham Barber. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Jesup. He was a veteran of the United States Army having received the American deeds Service Medal and the EAMET Service Medal. He was preceded in death by his wife, Brownie Barber, son, Freddie Barber, and a sister, Myrtle Branch. Survivors include: 3 sons & daughters-in-laws, Jimmy & Sue Nell Barber of Jesup, Terry & Nell Barber of Baxley, and Leon & Taphne Barber of Knoxville, TN; grandchildren, John Barber, Vickie Barber, Hayley Jones, Micah Jones, & Mickaela Jones; 2 great-grandchildren and special friends, Angie Hipps and Ellen Perkins. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, December 5th at 3pm from the chapel of Swain Funeral Home. Interment: Midway Baptist Church Cemetery with Military Honors. Ministers: Charles Manning, Rev. Danny Daniels, & Rev. Dennis Bryant. Active pallbearers: John Barber, Randy Livingston, Lewis Parker, Durrell Steedley, Ronnie Boatright, & David Bohannon.
