Royce E. Leggett, age 55, died in the Appling County Health Care System Wednesday December 2, 2009. He was born in Appling County, on January 14, 1954 and had resided there all his life. He was employed as a mechanic at Leggett Garage and was a member of Harvest Temple Church of God. He was preceded in death by a sister Hattie Mae Lane and was the son of the late Ira Leggett and the late Ollie Griffin Leggett. He is survived by wife Ann E. Leggett of Baxley; daughter Shannon and husband Randy Carter of Hazlehurst; son Royce Lamar Leggett and wife Amanda Leggett of Rochelle, GA; Step-daughters, Jody and husband Winton Herrin of Baxley, Donna and husband Freddie White of Baxley, Joyce and husband Greg Kennedy of Baxley, and Melinda and husband Richard Daly of Baxley; Brothers, I J and wife Roselee Legget of Baxley, Maxwell and wife Eula Leggett of Baxley, and Charlie and wife Peggy Leggett of Baxley, Edward and wife Diane Leggett of Hazlehurst; Sisters Ruby and husband Richard Lewis of Hazlehurst, Tracy and husband Ed Burns of Cobbtown, and Jeannette and husband Edward Pearce of Baxley; Eleven grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive. Funeral services were held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday December 6, 2009 at Harvest Temple Church of God with the Rev. Earl Wiggins, Rev. Richard Lewis, Rev. Billy Pratton, and Rev. Virginia Herrington officiating. Interment followed in the Zoar Cemetery with Rev. Lamar Lee officiating. Active Pallbearers were Joseph Lewis, John Leggett, Carlos Leggett, Maxwell Leggett, Huey Lane, Robert Pearce, and Jason Leggett. Honorary Pallbearers were Mack and Peggy Iqou, Harvest Temple C.O.G. Jimmy A. Courson, age 73, died Tuesday December 15, 2009 in the Appling Healthcare System. Mr. Courson was born September 15, 1936 to the late James L. Courson and the late Ann Dills Courson Porterfield. He was a member of the Arlington Assembly of God and currently attended Zion Baptist Church in Appling County. Mr. Courson served in the United States Army and was preceded in death by his former wife, Thelma Wester Courson. Survivors include: His wife, Laverne Courson of Baxley; Daughter, Denise Courson Withers of Richmond, VA; Son Jim Courson of Riverview, FL; Sister Gail Mills of Jacksonville, FL. & 4 grandchildren also survive. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, December 19, 2009 from the Arlington Assembly of God Church in Jacksonville, Florida at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow in Arlington Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, December 17, 2009 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Swain Funeral Home and Visitation Friday, December 18, 2009 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Hewell & Son Funeral Home in Jacksonville, Florida. Annie Genette Overstreet died Saturday, December 16, 2009 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Savannah. A native of Appling County, she was born February 15, 1933 to the late Jake and Nevada Smith Scott. She was a member of Ephesus Church of God. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Talmadge Overstreet, Sr., son, David Overstreet and grandsons, Doug and David Overstreet. Survivors are: Three daughters & sons-in-law, Pat & Carroll Dyal of Jacksonville, FL., Annette & Jamie Smith of Baxley, and Debbie & Barry Priester of Jesup; Son and daughter-in-law, Tommy & Kathleen Overstreet of Baxley; sister, Aline Fussell of Hazlehurst; brother, Johnny Scott of Bristol; grandchildren, Melanie Watson, Jay Dyal, Billy Overstreet, Gray Overstreet, Wayne Priester, Derek Priester, Chat Carter, Mandy Courson, & Ashley Carter, great-grandchildren, Bryce & Colby Watson, Hannah & Hank Dyal, Nicholas Overstreet, Brittany Overstreet, Devon & Louren Overstreet, and Chase & Faith Priester. Mary Julia Robinson Maglio Whaley

Mary Julia Robinson Maglio Whaley died Wednesday, December 23, 2009 in the Pavilion. Mrs. Whaley was born July 22, 1918 to a Baptist Minister, Robert Lee Robinson & Julia Maddox Robinson. Her early childhood she lived in Union Point and moved to Mt. Vernon in August of 1932 completed junior college at Brewton Parker and received a 4 year degree at Tifton College. She taught science in High School at Mary Parsons in Forsyth, 1939 to 1940. She moved to Milledgeville in 1941. Steve entered service and she was a Lab Technician for Reynolds Metals during the remainder of the war. She taught High School and Junior College Chemistry and Physics at Brewton Parker in 1946 & 1947. Mr. and Mrs. Maglio returned to Baxley in the fall of 1947, where she was a science teacher and Steve was a High School Coach. She taught Science in Jeff Davis High School 1955 through 1957 and returned to Baxley in 1957, as a Science teacher. Steve's sudden death caused her to close the operation of Maglio's Jewelry which she operated until the middle of 1976. Mrs. Whaley married R. Hudson Whaley of Jacksonville who died in 1984. In her later years Mrs. Whaley devoted her time to Church and civic activities. She was especially active in the Alumni Association of Brewton Parker College and the First Baptist Church of Baxley, as a direct result of her influence the church recently added its first steeple. Survivors are: Nieces, Julia McRae of Montgomery, AL. & Sue Johnson of Decatur; nephews, John Robert Johnson of Atlanta & Roy Johnson of Morristown, TN; great nieces, Beth Bell of Vidalia, Susan Peterson of Albany, Leanne Bond of Prattville, AL, Julie McRae of Montgomery, AL, Currie Bucher of Austin, TX; great nephews also survive; step-daughter-in-law, Joan Spear of Middleburg, FL & Susan Whaley of St. Augustine, FL; step-granddaughters, Karen McMillan of Green Cove Springs, FL., Kimberly Antonaci of Palm Coast, FL., Debbie Keener of Hickory, N.C., Kelly Shepherd of Jacksonville, FL; step-grandsons, R.H. Whaley, III of Hickory, N.C. & Todd Whaley of St. Augustine, FL; step-brother-in-law, Harold Whaley of Simi, CA.
Funeral Services will be held Sunday, December 27, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Swain Funeral Home.
Interment will follow at a later date.

Oletha L. Stephens, age 76, died at her residence Wednesday, December 23, 2009. She was born October 23, 1933 in Appling County, and had resided here all of her life. She was retired and had worked as a clerk at City Trends before her retirement. She was a member of Big Oaks Church of God. She was the daughter of the late Burch Dyal and the late Pithena Carter Dyal. She is survived by her husband of fifty-two years, Eugene Stephens of Baxley; two daughters, Teresa and Danny Hardwick of Baxley, and Alex and Trey Brooks of Baxley: two grandchildren, Gregory Hall and Crystal Mulling; two great-grandchildren, Dylan Mulling and Devyn Allen: two sisters, Mary Kelly of Baxley, and Jean Cooper of Jacksonville, FL.; nieces and nephews, Terry Carter, Earl Moore, Robert Kelly, Deborah Kelly, Jimmy Cooper, David Cooper, Keith Cooper and Rustin Cooper also survive. Funeral services were held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, December 26th, 2009 at Big Oaks Church of God with Rev. Allen Carter and Rev. Virginia Herrington officiating. Ellis Arnold Williams, age 66, of Nicholls, died on December 1, 2009 at his residence after an extended illness. He was a native of Bacon County and son of the late Willie T. Williams and Lavonia Rewis Williams. Arnold was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Williams. Survivors include two sons, James Keilah Williams of Alma and Gary Dewayne Williams of Baxley; two daughters, Debbie Griffis (Earl) and Donna Marie Williams of Baxley; six brothers, Richard Earl Strickland of Hortense, Tony Williams (JoAnn) of Orlando, FL, Kenny Williams, Mark Williams (Jackie) and Petie Williams (Carol), all of Alma, and Greg Williams (Cindy) of Bickley; two sisters, Rhonda Register (Roy) and Susan Allen (Ben) of Alma; seven grandchildren, three great- grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Friday at 2:00 p.m. from the chapel of Crosby Funeral Home with Darrell Williams officiating. Interment followed at Big Creek Cemetery. The family received friends at the funeral home Thursday evening between the hours of 6:00 and 9:00 p.m. Active pallbearers were Lawrence White, Scott and C. Jerry Taylor, Jerry, Teddy and Shawn Williams. Crosby Funeral Home of Alma was in charge of arrangements.
Lake C. SELLERS

Lake C. Sellers, 88, died Dec. 3, 2009 at his residence. Mr. Sellers was born Oct. 27, 1921 to the late Lawrence C. and Eugenia Shurling Sellers. He grew up in the Midway Community, attended Altamaha School and graduated from Baxley High School. Lake volunteered and served in the United States Marine Corps during WWII at Guadalcanal, Australia and other theaters during the war. He married Ruth Sellers and had three children. Lake worked with his father farming and saw milling at the old home place. During the 40's he moved to North Virginia where he lived and worked for over 30 years. In 1977, Lake moved back to the homestead and took up farming, and he married Nancy Sellers and helped raise her three children. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Laura Jean Douglas. Lake was an active member of Midway Baptist Church and was baptized there as a child. He served as Training Union Leader, Sunday school teacher, on committees, in the choir and as a member of the old Midway Quartet. Lake also worked as Bailiff for the Appling County Court System for a number of years. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Sellers of Baxley; two sons, Larry (Kristina) Sellers and David Sellers, both of Baxley; six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; three step-children, Douglas (Alyssa) of North Virginia, Debbie of Tennessee and Timothy (Marsha) Ross of Kentucky; eight step-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren also survive. Memorial services were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, Dec. 7 from Midway Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael Beecher officiating. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Association or Community Hospice in Vidalia. Arrangements were under the direction of David E. Miles Funeral Home.

Maxie Beecher, 62, died Friday, Dec. 4, 2009 at his residence. Mr. Beecher was a native and life-long resident of Appling County, he was born June 14, 1947 to the late Eddie Mann and Faye Branch Beecher. Maxie attended Spring Branch Baptist Church and was employed by J. Hiers Company. He is survived by his wife, Levina Beecher of Baxley; one daughter, Angie Larson of Jacksonville, FL; one son, Darrell Beecher of Baxley; three sisters, Donna Jean Beecher and Diane James, both of Baxley, and Dot Daniels of Surrency; and two grandchildren, Jacob and Gracie Larson also survive. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, Dec. 7 from the chapel of Swain Funeral Home with the Rev. Terry Reagin and Joey Hiers officiating. Interment followed in Carter Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Richard Griffin, Gary "Shorty" Kramer, Jerry Baxley, Jimmy Crosby, Charlie Branch and Ronnie "Bug" McCarty, Jr. Honorary pallbearers were Joey Hiers and employees of J. Jesse J. "Jimmy" Bullard, 72, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009. Mr. Bullard was born Dec. 1, 1937 in Appling County, to the late Willie Gary and Maggie Patterson Bullard. He was a member of Red Oak Baptist Church. Jimmy was a member of Teamsters Local #512, Woodstock Masonic Lodge #313 and a member of NRA. He was retired from Ryder Truck Lines and was currently employed by Swain Funeral Home. Bullard was preceded in death by a son, James Mitchell Bullard, granddaughter, Jessalyn Miranda Combs, brother, Kenny Bullard, sister, Erris Hopkins and a grandson, Edward Barton. He is survived by his wife, Nell Bullard of Baxley; one daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Derrall Tucker of MacClenny, Fla.; one son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Celle Bullard of MacClenny, Fla.; one daughter-in-law and son-in-law, Anita and David Mette of Glen St. Mary, Fla.; one sister, Laura Floyd of Jacksonville, Fla.; four brothers, Edsel Bullard of Baxley, Carroll Bullard of Blackshear, Royce Bullard of MacClenny, Fla. and Wendell Bullard of McRae; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Also surviving are two step-brothers, Robert Crosby and Albert Crosby; six step-sisters, Emma Lee DeLoach, Betty Lou O'Steen, Willene Crosby, Dorothy Carter, Bertha Aldridge, Jeanette Crawford; and step-sister-in-law, Alva Crosby also survives.
Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9 from Red Oak Baptist Church, with the Revs. Denny Waters, Rick Brown, Justin McLellan and Robbie Gill officiating.
Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Herman R. Rentz, 66, of Graham, died Monday, Dec. 7, 2009 in Candler Hospital in Savannah. Mr. Rentz was born Aug. 27, 1943 in Jeff Davis County, to the late Levi Grady and Ruth Hesters Rentz. He was a veteran of the United States Army. Herman was retired from Lucent Tech and was previously employed with Advanced Auto Parts in Hazlehurst. He is survived by his wife, Amy Sue Rentz of Graham; one son and daughter-in-law, Andy and Tonya Hand of Hazlehurst; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Doris Rentz of Waycross, Joyce and Joby Rowell of Hazlehurst, Betty Turner and JoAnn and Lee Bass, all of Graham; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Holt and Vivian Rentz, Buddy and Annette Rentz, Benny Rentz and Don and Loney Mae Rentz, all of Graham; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robin and Brenda Davenport of Hazlehurst; grandchildren, Brouk Hand and Lakota Hand of Hazlehurst; special cousin, Joan Rowell of Graham; and several nieces and nephews also survive. Interment followed in Graham United Methodist Church Cemetery with Military honors.
