Mrs. Clara Bush Roberson died Saturday, March 7, 2009 at Meadows Regional Hospital in Vidalia. Mrs. Roberson was born September 15, 1931 in Emanuel County to the late Lonzie Harvey and Maudie Lee Bush. She was a member of Smith Street Baptist Church in Vidalia, and was retired from Toombs County Service Center as an Instructor. She was a graduate of Perry Business College. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Virginia Ward and Jaunita Rowland, brothers, Eschol Bush and James Frank Bush. Survivors include: Her husband, Winton P. Roberson; daughter, Gail M. Allmond; son, Michael P. Roberson all of Vidalia; sister, Lorine Thompson; brothers, Jessie Bush and Roger Bush; 2 grandchildren and 27 nieces and nephews.

Julia Mae Robertson
Julia Mae Robertson died Friday, February 27, 2009 in the Appling Health Care System. She was born in Carbonhill, Alabama and had resided in Appling County, for the past eighteen years. She was a homemaker and a member of Dunn Memorial Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Julie Robertson, a son, Wayne Stephens and grandson, David Blake Tomberlin. She was the daughter of the late Francis Howell and the late Ruby Hill Howell. She is survived by her husband of thirty-nine years Kenny Robertson of Baxley: seven daughters, Shelia Fay Corbin of Cottondale, FL, Gladys Tomberlin of Baxley, Shelba Jean Gay of Marianna, FL, Shirley Corbin of Cottondale, FL, Tressa Teston of Baxley, Regina Seaton of Marianna, FL, and Debra Robertson of Panama Beach, FL; Two sons, Kennety Robertson, Jr. of Baxley, and David Paige of Cottondale, FL: one sister, Virginia Elloit of Carbonhill, Alabama: twenty-one grandchildren and twenty seven great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. in the Chapel of David E. Miles Funeral Home with Rev. Rick Brown and Rev. Jack Peller officiating.
Interment followed in the Baxley Graveyard.
Musical selections were rendered by Rev. Rick Brown and Mrs. Julie Brown.

Mr. Henry Lee Miller died Monday, March 2, 2009 at his residence after an extended illness. Mr. Miller was born February 16, 1941 in Toombs County, to the late Willie Lewis Miller and Marie McCumbers Rowland. He was a member of the First Assembly of God. Mr. Miller was retired from IBEW Local 508 in Savannah, and a member of North America Fishing Club. Survivors include: 2 daughters and son-in-law, Kimberly and Allen Lewis of Valdosta and Samantha Miller and Monroe Crosby of Baxley; 3 sons and daughter-in-law, Mike Miller, Joey, and Dawn Miller all of Valdosta and Merrell Miller of Baxley; mother, Marie Rowland; 3 sisters, Jaunita Edenfield of Vidalia, Shelby Jean Jackson of Higgston and Tammie Davenport of Hazlehurst; 2 brothers, Billy Miller of Douglas and Randall Miller of Hazlehurst. 8 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. J. C. Tomberlin
Mr. J. C. Tomberlin died Monday, March 2, 2009 at his residence after an extended illness. Mr. Tomberlin was born June 1, 1922 in Appling County, to the late Elmer and Lou Tomberlin. He was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church. Mr. Tomberlin was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in W.W. II. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a Rural Mail Carrier and was a member of the Appling County Young Farmers. Mr. Tomberlin was preceded in death by his wife, Loualta Tillman Tomberlin. Survivors include: Daughters, Emily Williams, Louise Tomberlin and Marie Tomberlin; sons and daughters-in-law, Jasper and Jane Tomberlin, Mark and Toni Tomberlin, Howard Tomberlin and Roy Mincey; 10 grandchildren, Shanna Williams, Felicia Smith, Jenny Tomberlin, Jill Tomberlin, Jessica Tomberlin, Blake Tomberlin, Weston Tomberlin, Kristin Tomberlin, Dallas Tomberlin, Cheyanne Tomberlin, and a great-grandchild, Hayden Tomberlin.

Mrs. Mary "Bill" Deen Hobbs died Monday, July 27, 2009 in the Walton Regional Medical Center in Monroe, GA. Mrs. Hobbs was born July 3, 1918 in Appling County, to the late W.G. "Bill" Deen and the late Sidney Sara Hutchinson Deen. She retired from Nursing after 30 years of service from Appling General Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodward E. Hobbs and brother Sidney Roger Deen Survivors include: her daughter and son-in-law Gloria J. and Paul W. Homer of Bethlehem; 2 sisters, Jewel Dennis of Lyons and Gloria Stanton of Waco, Texas; brother and sister-in-law, Grady and Elizabeth Deen of Baxley; grandchildren, Jennifer Miles and Christa Miles Thompson.

Mr. Carroll Dale Miles died Wednesday, July 22, 2009 in the St. Joseph Hospital in Savannah. Mr. Miles was born December 19, 1946 in Bacon County to the late Willis Franklin and Bertha Beckworth Miles. He was a member of Red Oak Baptist Church. Mr. Miles was a member of Ducks & Turkeys Unlimited & Yoder Field Hunting Club. Survivors include: his wife, Joan Fuhrman Miles of Baxley; daughters and sons-in-law, Stephanie and Bruce Terrell of Moultrie and Julie and Skip Higginbotham of Baxley; 4 sons and daughters-in-law, Reggie D. and Beverly Miles of Hazlehurst, Jeremy and Michelle Moon of Baxley, Trey and Jessica Thompson of Statesboro and Buck and Heather Thomas of Valdosta; sister and brother-in-law Treva and Fred Mullins of Atlanta; brothers Jewel and Marguerite Miles of Hazlehurst and Merrell and Norma Faye Miles of Baxley. Betty Tuten Jordan
Mrs. Betty Tuten Jordan died Thursday, July 16, 2009 at Baptist Hospital, Jacksonville, (Duval Co) Florida. Mrs. Jordan was born February 12, 1928, in Alma, Georgia, to the late Cora Belle and H.C. Tuten. She worked at Rexall Drugs (8th and Main) as a young lady, where she met her future husband, Stanley. She later worked for Cohen Brothers and retired after 35 years of service at U.S.F. and G. Mrs. Jordan raised her family in Jacksonville. She was a faithful member of Woodstock Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir and served as Sunday School Treasurer. Mrs. Jordan will be missed by her U.S.F. and G. friends, who continued their friendships after retirement with birthday celebrations, Christmas dinners and the dinner and movie nights with Delores Gong. She enjoyed sewing, crafts, and especially her trips to Brookside, with the three great-grands- Kiersten, Logan, and Teagan. She will be remembered for her spotless house, yard, and her favorite edging tool- a hatchet. Mrs. Jordan moved to Baxley, GA in 2003, to live with her daughter and son-in-law. She was a member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, and was an active member of the Pine Forest Garden Club. And, yes, the "hatchet" made the trip to Georgia, and was put to use by Betty. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Drew Jordan, daughter, Linda Chandler and grandson, Aaron Crosby; brothers, Donald F., Larry, and H.C. Tuten, Jr.; sisters Eula Mae Helms and Lillian Casen
Survivors include: her daughters, Sylvia (Calvin) Crosby of Baxley, Delores (Robert) McElroy of Jacksonville, FL; brother Douglas T. (Paulita) Tuten of Stockbridge; sisters, Edith McErlean of Hudson, Fl., Sybil Cannon of Jacksonville Beach, FL, Patricia Kreidler of Winter Park, FL. Six special grandchildren, Keith, Darren, Chad, Shelley, Donna, and Jeffrey. Her prayers were always with her great-grandson, Derek, who is serving in Iraq at this time.

Mr. Howard Van Patrick, Sr. died Sunday, July 12, 2009. Mr. Patrick was born April 29, 1939 in Laurens County, to the late Eugene and Mattie Gertrude Skinner Patrick. He was a very avid gardener. Survivors include: 2 daughters and son-in-law, Quinda Patrick and Missy and Al Meadows all of Baxley; son and daughter-in-law, Frank E. and Robin Patrick of Odum; 3 brothers, James Patrick of Duluth, Clyde Patrick of Lawrenceville and Cecil Patrick of Macon. 4 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Ruth Groover Crummey, age 68, died October 1, 2009, in the Appling Health Care System. She was born November 17,1940 in Appling County, and had lived here most of her life. She was a retired seamstress and before her retirement she had worked for Ship and Shore and Douglas Harper. She was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a brother Donald Groover and she was the daughter of the late Joseph Lee Groover and the late Dalfie Evans Groover Jones. She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Rose And Steve Toler of Hazelhurst, Patsy and Leon Dickey of Vidalia, and Shirline and Sidney Jackson of Baxley; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary Jo and S.A. Dukes of Cedar Crossing; three grandchildren, Clint Taylor, Brandy Wells and Jody Hayes; and three great-grandchildren Austin and Bruce Hayes and Ethan Taylor. Funeral services were held Saturday, October 3, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. in the Chapel of David E Miles Funeral Home with Rev. Brad Park and Rev. Steve Toler officiating.
