Mrs. Mae Clements Carter, 75, died Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at the emergency room at Appling HeathCare System. She was born in Appling County, on Aug. 1, 1934. Mae was a retired seamstress. She was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin Carter. Mrs. Carter was the daughter of the late Charles and Alice Stone Clements. She is survived by one daughter, Shannon Miller and husband, Nick of Baxley; one sister, Mavis Morris of Brooklet and grandchildren, Brittany Pipkin, Austin Mincey and Zane Mincey, all of Baxley. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, Feb. 26 in the chapel of David E. Miles Funeral Home with the Rev. Rick Brown officiating. Interment followed in Pleasant Grove Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Wayne Carter, William Carter, Roy Sailem, Quincey McMillian, Arlie McMillian and W. G. Morris. Musical selections were rendered by CD selections of various artists. Arrangements were under the direction of David E. Miles Funeral Home.
Don Simmons
Don Simmons, age 77, of Scuffletown, died Tuesday night (Feb. 23, 2010) at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Jacksonville (Duval Co, FL), after an extended illness. He was a native of Appling County, but had lived in Bacon County, most of his life. He was son of the late Samuel Wright Simmons and Mattie McClellan Simmons and was also preceded in death by a brother, Dewey Simmons and a sister, Donna Griffin. Don was a retired vehicle mechanic with Sweat Battery and Electric, where he worked for 36 years; member of The Jesus Church in Scuffletown, and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Martha (Cootsie) Hall Simmons of Scuffletown; four sons, Billy Ray (Rabbit) Simmons of Scuffletown, Donal (Duck) Simmons and wife, Sherry of Alma, Marvin (Bubba) Simmons and wife, Jodie of Taylor Town and Jamie Simmons and wife, Tina of Scuffletown; seven daughters, Gayle Mincey and husband, Jerome of Alma, Regina Meeks and husband, Benji of Scuffletown, Sonja Jordan and husband, Bill of Carter Town, Pinky Heflin and husband, Wayne of Alma, April Watkins and husband, Ben of Bristol, Gay Bell and husband, Travis of Baxley, and Julia Simmons of Scuffletown; two brothers, Darrel Simmons of Alma and Dewayne Simmons of Townson; four sisters, Dennell Simmons, Dorene Mills and Dianne Simmons, all of Alma and Doris Griffin of Bainbridge, fifteen grandchildren, one great-grandchild and one on the way. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at The Jesus Church in Scuffletown, with the Rev. Roy King officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends at the funeral home Friday between the hours of 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. The body was carried to the church at 1:00 o'clock Saturday to lie in state. Active pallbearers were Troy, Paul and Keith Simmons and Allen, Greg and Darrell Griffin. All others in attendance will be considered as honorary pallbearers. Crosby Funeral Home of Alma was in charge of all the arrangements.
Dewey McLeod
Dewey McLeod, 81, died February 26, 2010. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to all who knew him. He was a member of Broward Road United Methodist Church. Dewey was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean Conflict. He was also a Mason with the Marion Dunn Lodge of Ocala, FL. He was preceded in death by his son, Dale McLeod, sisters, Lessie Byrd and Okella Waters and brothers: Willie, J.P., Ivey and Jessie McLeod. He is survived by his wife, Hilda McLeod; daughters, Kathy Denise McLeod and Kimberly McLeod Peeples; sons, Keith and Kenneth L. McLeod; sister, Lola Taylor (John); seven grandchildren and many great-grandchildren also survive. Memorial services will be announced at a later date. Ruth Lewis Hart
Ruth Lewis Hart, of Augusta (Richmond Co, GA), went to be with her Lord early Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010, surrounded by her loving family members. In the final days of her life, the outpouring of love from her immediate and extended family, as well as a host of friends, was a tribute to the life she lived while she walked among us. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 2 from Platt's Crawford Avenue Chapel in Augusta, with the Rev. Alan Faulkner and the Rev. Fred Gunter officiating. Committal services were held at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Swain Funeral Home, 1632 Hatch Pkwy North (U.S. Hwy 1 North) in Baxley, with Eleanor Wells delivering the eulogy. Interment followed in Omega Cemetery. Ruth was born in the family home on Jan. 29, 1923 in Baxley, to parents, Claude Lee and Ida Mae Lewis. She was one of five children. Her rich Christian heritage was established early on by her parents. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Baxley. Ruth's life was greatly influenced by her parents' example, as well as the training she received in her church.
In 1941, she married Milton Smith Hart of Savannah and they enjoyed sixty-one years together. They were active members of Hill Baptist Church for many years. Ruth continued her lifelong pursuit of missions through her work in WMU, as well as her ministry to those in need, many of them strangers. Mrs. Hart was preceded in death by her husband, Milton Smith Hart, Parents, Claude Lee and Ida Mae Thomas Lewis, two sisters, Gwendolyn Lewis Nasworthy and Martha Claude Lewis and a brother, Jerry Filmore Lewis. She is survived by a daughter, Sandra Hart Wade and husband, Harry Woodward Wade; two granddaughters, Melanie Wade Larsen and husband, Thomas Neil Larsen and Catherine Wade Wahl and husband, Philip Russell Wahl; great-grandchildren, Olivia Hart Wahl and India Elizabeth Wahl; one brother, William Lee "Billy" Lewis and wife, Betty; one uncle, Lemuel Britt Thomas; and a host of nieces, nephews and her dearest friends, Irvine and Willie Mae Faulkner also survive. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light of her life. Throughout her life, she touched many lives by her Christian example of selfless living, compassion, and love. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Local arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
Lucille Powell Stone, 95, died Wednesday, March 3, 2010 in Appling HealthCare System. Mrs. Stone was born Aug. 26, 1914 in Telfair County, GA, to the late John Edward "Edd" Powell and the late Maude Shephard Powell. She was a member of Riverside Baptist Church. Mrs. Stone was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Woodrow Stone, brothers, Roy Edward and Durell Powell. Mrs. Stone is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Geraldine and Joe Woodard of Munford, AL and Velma and J.L. Hinnant of Waycross; one son and daughter-in-law, Charles E. and Velma Stone of Baxley; grandchildren, Chuck (Melody) Woodard, Jim (Shelly) Woodard, Julie (Tommy) York, Jeffrey (Dana) Studebaker and Kelly (Joellen) Stone; nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, March 5 at Riverside Baptist Church with the Revs. J.E. Blanton and Justin McLellan officiating. Interment followed in Omega Cemetery. Active pallbearers were grandsons: Kelly Stone, Jeffrey Studebaker, Chuck Woodard, Jimmy Woodard, Jimmy Woodard, Jr. and Timmy Woodard. Honorary pallbearers were the Adult Sunday School Class of Riverside Baptist Church, staff of the Pavilion and all in attendance. Wilma Mixon Ammons
Wilma Mixon Ammons, 84, died Friday, March 5, 2010 in Appling HealthCare System. Ms. Ammons was born Feb. 16, 1926 in Appling County, and had resided here all of her life. She was a homemaker and was a member of Baxley Church of God of Prophecy. Ms. Ammons was preceded in death by her husband, A.C. Ammons, Jr., sister, Hazel Thomas and one grandchild, Lonnie Crosby. She was the daughter of the late Rev. Jim and Pearl Lee Mixon. Ms. Ammons is survived by three daughters, Linda and husband, Curtis Crosby of Baxley, Nelda and husband, William Futrell of Baxley, and Louise Coleman of Lyons; two sons, Earl and wife, Linda and J. L. Ammons and wife, Bernice, all of Baxley; one uncle, Maloy Williams; 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild also survives. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 7 in the chapel of David E. Miles Funeral Home with the Rev. Lamar Lee, Rev. Bobby Steelwell and Rev. Javan Anderson officiating. Interment followed in Omega Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Scottie Ammons, Shane Ammons, Jeffery Ammons, Robert Ammons, Kevin Mann and Neil Lightsey. Honorary pallbearers were Jerry Tippens, Dr. Fordham and employees of the Pavilion and all friends in attendance. David Wilcox
David Wilcox, died Friday, March 5, 2010. David was born April 27, 1936 in Surrency, to Ethel Holmes Wilcox and the late Waymon Wilcox. He married Leila Bell Jones of Surrency. Wilcox was a faithful member of Surrency Grove Missionary Baptist Church. He worked at Propex (Amoco Fabric) for much of his adult life. David retired over 12 years ago and enjoyed hobbies of fishing and gardening. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Leila Bell Jones and six children: Kathy Lynn (Brady) Bell, Thaddeus Dewayne (Celeste) Wilcox, Vincent (Latrade) Wilcox, Sheila (Arthur) Conyers, Rodney (Angela) Wilcox and Sonya Latrenda Wilcox; two sisters, Gloristine (Jack) Jones and Portia (Clifford) Wooden; nine brothers, Clarence (Mary) Wilcox, Quanida Wilcox, Nathanial Wilcox (deceased), Bobby (Johnetta) Wilcox, Stanford (Gloria) Wilcox, James Lamar (Margaret) Wilcox, James Lerico (Willie Mae) Wilcox, Tony Wilcox and Donny (Faye) Wilcox. Additionally, he leaves 13 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 8 from Surrency Grove Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Alfred Butler presiding and eulogy given by the Rev. Dr. Vivian Woodruff. Bobby Dominy
Bobby Dominy, a Methodist of the Christian Faith, at age 65, and a resident of Westerville, OH; went to be with our Lord on Saturday, March 6, 2010, after an extended stay in Mount Carmel St. Ann's Hospital (Westerville, OH); as a result of a heart attack. He was born and raised in Appling County, of Baxley, Ga. Bobby had worked for many hospitals throughout the nation. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lollie Carter and Argene Dominy (also of Baxley) and brothers, Welzie and Willard Dominy. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Sandra Gayle Vaughn Dominy and son, Robert Michal Dominy of Westerville, OH; sisters, Alene Hudson, Laverne and Bill Kicklighter, Christine Kunkel; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins and one aunt, Ora Lee Carter, also brothers-in-law, Richard (Lavonne) Vaughn and Dale (Emma) Vaughn. Arrangements were under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Columbus, Ohio. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to all who have shown their support by prayers, cards and/or gifts during this difficult time. Gone to be with God, but not forgotten.
Malana E. Jackson Solomon
Malana E. Jackson Solomon, died Saturday, March 6, 2010 following an extended illness. Malana was born May 5, 1953 in Baxley, where she was born to the proud parents of Lillie Jackson and the late Calvin Jackson. She was the fourth oldest of 12 children. Five sisters and one brother preceded her in death. Malana received her primary and secondary education in the public school system of Appling County. She graduated with honors as Salutatorian of the 1971 Class of Appling County, Comprehensive High School. She furthered her education at Albany State College in Albany and later at Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, FL. In later years, around 1980, Malana moved to Clay County, Florida where she met and married her current husband, Arthur Leon Solomon in December of 1982. To that union, two children were born, Seanetha and Arthur Leon Solomon, Jr. Malana had various jobs throughout her career. Most rewarding to her was the position she held for 20 years with the Clay County District Schools as a Pre-K teacher and ESE aide. Malana's religious experiences began at an early age as she, her father and other family members traveled the circuit singing gospel songs of praise. She initially united with St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church where she played a prominent role in the choir and as Church Clerk. She later moved her membership to Emmanuel Christian Fellowship Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Daniel where she faithfully and diligently served until her passing. She is survived by her husband of 27 years, Arthur Leon Solomon; two daughters, Delta Culbertson-Wooten and Seanetha Solomon; one step-daughter, Athena Moorer (Tremain); one son, Arthur Leon Solomon, Jr. (Jessica); mother, Lillie N. Jackson; one sister, Lougenia Pierce (Eugene); five brothers, Ronald, Timothy, Calvin, Scottie and Kelton (Cynthia); five brothers-in-law, five aunts, Zora Brown, Versie Brown, Ophelia Walker (Eugene), Allifair Perry, Geraldine Barron; one uncle, Charles Williams (Carrie); six grandchildren, Nadeah Culbertson, Charief Culbertson, Dai'Von Solomon, Natalya Miller, Naomi Solomon and Tyleeah Moorer; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless caring friends and neighbors. Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 13 from St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church, Middleburg, FL, with the Rev. Walter Harley presiding. The Rev. Lonnie Daniel, pastor of Emmanuel Christian Fellowship, gave eulogy. Interment followed in Grant Foreman Cemetery in Middleburg, (Clay Co) FL. Georgia Kay Kinter Manuel
Georgia Kay Kinter Manuel, 67, died Sunday, March 7, 2010 in Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, (Chatham Co). Mrs. Manuel was born May 3, 1942 in Chatham County to the late Alfred Kinter and the late Bernice Gosch Kinter. She was retired from Southern Pacific Bank as a Vice-President. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Wayne Fannin of Baxley, and two granddaughters, Megan Lynn Lamb and Erin Leigh Lamb. Memorial services were held at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 10 in the chapel of Swain Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Stone officiating. Interment will follow at a later date.
