Georgia Death Records, 1914-1940

Jerry Filmore Lewis

Jerry Filmore Lewis, 72, died Friday, Jan. 8, 2010 at his residence. Mr. Lewis was born July 4, 1937 in Appling County, to the late Claude Lee Lewis and the late Ida Mae Thomas Lewis. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and the past-owner and operator of United Auto Electric. Jerry was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly Lewis and two sisters, Gwendolyn Nasworthy and Martha Claude Lewis. He is survived by three daughters, Paige Lewis Folsom, Pamela Lewis and MacKenzie Spell, all of Baxley; two sons and daughter-in-law, Phil and Sasha Lewis and Patrick Lewis, all of Baxley; one sister, Annie Ruth Hart of Augusta; one brother and sister-in-law, Billy and Betty Lewis of Baxley; ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. Monday, Jan. 11 from the chapel of Swain Funeral Home with the Rev. Brad Park and John Stephens officiating. Interment followed in Omega Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Randy L. Sellers, Danny Stone, John Baker, Timothy Courson, John Lewis and Chris O'Quinn. Musical selections were rendered by Joey and Rory Feek of Columbia, TN. Arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.

Curtis Lee Music

Curtis Lee Music, age 70, of Alma (Bacon Co.), died January 8, 2010 in Twin Oaks Nursing Home after an extended illness. He was a native of Appling County, but had lived most of his life in Alma. Curtis was son of the late Leroy Music and Georgia Lee Taylor Music and preceded in death by three brothers, Junior, James and Wesley Music and a sister, Ann Williams. He was employed with the City of Baxley for 33 Years and a member of the Eight Street Church of God of Prophecy. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Alta Davis Music of Alma; four daughters, Kathy Miller and Kim Batten and husband, Andy of Alma, Wanda Sue Fogarty and husband, John T. of Graham and Cindy Papierz and husband, Chris of Douglas; six brothers, Larry Mark Williams of Cluster, KY, Roy Music and Danny Music of Alma, Ronnie Music of Douglas, Glennon Music of LA and Jimmy Ray Music of Broxton; three sisters, Christine Coleman of Baxley, Sue Anderson of Broxton and Pat Hope of Ocilla, also five grandchildren, Jamie Miller, Levin and Brody Batten of Alma, John Curtis Fogarty of Graham and Daliver Benitez of Douglas also survive. Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 12 at 2:00 p.m. at New Vision Church with the Rev. Joe Brookshire, the Rev. Lynn Music and the Rev. Pet Hayes officiating. Interment followed in Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery. The family received friends at New Vision Church Monday evening between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. Active pallbearers were Noah Carter, Dub Taylor, Larry Barber, Billy Coleman, Jimmy Music and Ron Medders. All others in attendance were considered honorary escorts. Crosby Funeral Home of Alma was in charge of arrangements.

Sheila Ann Walker

Sheila Ann Walker, 49, died Friday, Jan. 8, 2010 at her residence. Mrs. Walker was born Nov. 6, 1960 in Bacon County and was a member of Harvest Temple Church of God. She was preceded in death by her father, Jarman Lynn. Survivors include her husband, Eddie Walker of Baxley; one step-daughter, April Ernest of Folkston; three sons, Rocky Lynn, Chris Crummey and Tyler Moore, all of Baxley; one step-son, Christian Walker of Augusta; her mother, Lurvie Mullis of Baxley; three brothers, Jarvis Lynn and Henry Lynn, both of Baxley, and Wendell Mullis of Vidalia; and five grandchildren also survive. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, Jan. 11 from the chapel of Swain Funeral Home with the Revs. Billy Bratton, Virginia Herrington and Earl Wiggins officiating. Interment followed in Midway Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Dexter Lynn, James Wykle, Wylie Westberry, Chris O'Quinn, Joey Coleman and Jerry Rich. Musical selections were rendered by the Revs. Billy Bratton and Earl Wiggins. Arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.

Charlotte Browder Eason

Charlotte Browder Eason, 92, died Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010 at Appling HealthCare System. Mrs. Eason was a native of Coosa County, Alabama and was born April 3, 1917 to the late George Campbell and Era Fail Browder. She was a member of Woods Presbyterian Church and First United Methodist Church. Charlotte was a retired teacher and was Teacher of the Year for Appling County in 1975 and Citizen of the Year in 2003. She was preceded in death by her husband, Molten Payne Eason. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Alan Singer of Baxley; one sister, Mary Keith of Charlotte, N.C.; one grandson, Campbell Singer of Baxley; and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12 in the chapel of Swain Funeral Home with the Rev. Alan Miller, Larry Keith, Bonita Wright and Mary Kay Nencioni. Interment followed in Omega Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Payne Eason, Graham Eason, Christopher Eason, James Twiggs, Bruce Wolfson and Ty Sellers. Arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.

Raymond M. (Hoot) Gibson, Sr.

Raymond M. (Hoot) Gibson, Sr., 96, died Saturday, January 9, 2010 in the Lillian G. Carter Health and Rehab in Plains. He was born June 22, 1913 in Appling County, to the late John H. Gibson and the late Effie Wolfe Gibson. Mr. Gibson retired in 1975 from the Carlton Company in Dublin where he was employed as Service Manager. He moved to Leesburg after his retirement and resided in Leesburg until his death. Raymond "Hoot" was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Navy. He was a member of Philema Road Baptist Church in Leesburg. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Campbell Gibson and a son, Raymond M. Gibson, Jr. He is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, John W. "Bud" and Mae Gibson of Leesburg, Paul and Diane Gibson of Dadeville, AL, Milton E. Gibson of Albany; grandchildren, Crystal and husband, Davy Youmans of Leesburg and Chad W. and wife, Lisa Gibson of Ogden, Utah; two great-grandchildren, Olivia Youmans and Alize Youmans, both of Leesburg; one sister, Clair Valladores of San Mateo, CA and one brother, Henry R. Gibson of Leesburg. Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13 from the chapel of David E. Miles Funeral Home with the Rev. Dan Harris officiating. Interment followed in Ten Mile Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Bill Campbell, Johnnie Campbell, Nick Campbell, Allen Campbell, Rex Campbell, Ben Campbell and Bret Campbell. Musical selections were rendered by Chris Campbell. Arrangements were under the direction of David E. Miles Funeral Home. ,

Ottis "Fluk" Johnson

Ottis "Fluk" Johnson, died Monday, January 11, 2010 at Appling HealthCare Pavilion after a brief illness. Mr. Johnson was born Nov. 9, 1932 in Appling County, to the late Richard Daniel and Lillie Mae (Sweetie) Johnson. Fluk enjoyed going to church, planting his garden and riding his bike. He was a member of Second Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Surrency. He is survived by three brothers, Rev. Edward (Betty) Johnson of Jacksonville, FL, Richard (Vernita) Johnson of Blackshear and Wordell Johnson of Blackshear; two sisters-in-law, Ethel Pearl Johnson of Baxley, and Harriet Johnson of Charleston, S.C. and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 16 in the chapel of C. M. Brown Funeral Home with the Rev. Elijah Jones officiating. Interment followed in Morris Steel Cemetery in Surrency. Active pallbearers were Joe G. Hayes, Sam Hobbs, Annies D. McMorris, William E. McMorris, Mike Sanders and Woody Vann. Honorary pallbearers were deacons of Second Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and Appling HealthCare Pavilion. Musical selections were rendered by the congregation. Arrangements were under the direction of C. M. Brown Funeral Home.

Jesse Lee Solomon, Sr.

Jesse Lee Solomon, Sr., died Jan. 11, 2010. Mr. Solomon was the son of the late William and Ora Rayner Solomon and was born July 25, 1939 in Baxley. He had four siblings who preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Marie Solomon; seven daughters, Dorothy (John) Bridgers, Alice (Larry) Goethie, Ora (Dr. Esco) Hall, Jr., Lois (Sammy) Vann, Jewel (Lorenzo) Jefferson, Juanita Wallace and Karla (Johnny) James; four sons, Robert Earl Solomon, Sr., Jesse (Diane) Solomon, Jr., Unray (Lorretta) Solomon, Sr. and Leron (Stephanie) Solomon, Sr.; mother-in-law, Alice Kimbro; one sister, Mary (Ronald) Wiggins; five brothers, Homer (Mary) Solomon, Williams (Lucy) Solomon, Eddie (Mary Lee) Solomon, Naymond (Elaine) Solomon, James (Emma) Solomon; in-laws, Otis Tippins, Doris Solomon, Hanna Mae Solomon, Hosea (Inez) Lee, Prince (Carol) Lee, James Lee, Lovely (Robert) Heller, Prudence Roberts, Linda Lee and Darcile Lee; 36 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and loved ones. Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15 from First African Missionary Baptist Church in Baxley, with Supt. James Futch officiating. Eulogy was given by Elder W. H. Solomon. Interment followed in Miles Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Johnny Tippins, Gary L. Solomon, William J. Solomon, Randy Solomon, Untron Solomon and Carl Solomon. Honorary pallbearers were Homer Solomon, Mary Lee Solomon, James Solomon, Doris Solomon, Mary Howard, Prince Lee, Linda Lee, Pete Rayner, Mary Solomon, Naymond Solomon, Emma Solomon, Hanna Mae Solomon, Hosa Lee, Carol Lee, Lovely Heller, Harrett Rayner, Eddie Solomon, Elaine Solomon, Otis Tippins, Curtis Howard, Inez Lee, James Lee, Jack Rayner, Dorcile Lee and the staff of Appling HealthCare System. Flower attendants were grandchildren. Musical selections were rendered by Naymond Solomon, Jr., Tammy Richburg and the choir. Arrangements were under the direction of Baxley Funeral Home.

Wayne "Lefty" Yawn

Wayne "Lefty" Yawn, 74, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010. Mr. Yawn was a native of Appling County, was born Oct. 31, 1935 to the late William Taft and Ettie Lee Carter Yawn. He was a member of Hopewell United Methodist Church. Wayne "Lefty" was a member of the Appling County Touch Down Club and Appling Country Club. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Yawn. Survivors include two sisters and brothers-in-law, Carolyn and Dwain Hutto and Billie Jean and D. C. Orvin, all of Baxley; one brother and sister-in-law, Dwight and Martha Yawn of Hazlehurst and sister-in-law, Norma Yawn of St. Simons Island. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15 from Hopewell United Methodist Church with the Rev. Creig Smith and Al Graham officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers were Don Webb, Brooks Johnson, Justin Orvin, Andy Orvin, Freddie Hutto and Tim Hipps. Musical selections were rendered by Sandra Smith, Hopewell United Methodist Church Choir and Wendy Hipps. Arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.

Tendle Boyd Quinn

Tendle Boyd Quinn, 82, died Wednesday, January 13, 2010 in Orchard Health & Rehabilitation. Mr. Quinn was born Nov. 25, 1927 in Appling County, to the late Lloyd Dalton and Nancy Branch Quinn. He was a member of Second Baptist Church in Warner Robins. Mr. Quinn was a U.S. Air Force Veteran and was a retired Civil service employee having served as a Fire Fighter with Warner Robins Air Force Base. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Ann Quinn; a sister, Geraldine Sellers and a brother, Bernice Quinn. He is survived by his wife, Betty Branch Quinn of Baxley; one daughter and son- in-law, Beth and Faron Thompson of Baxley; one son and daughter-in-law, Rev. Darrell and Susan Quinn of Baxley; one brother, Will Quinn of Baxley; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 16 from the chapel of Swain Funeral Home with the Revs. Rick Brown and Darrell Quinn officiating. Interment followed in Ten Mile Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Dale Lynch, Aubrey Lynch, J. E. Roberson, Carroll Waters, Randy Branch, Roger Branch, Joffree Morris, Malcolm Morris, Danny Smith, Lucky Quinn, Andy Quinn, Ricky Branch, Ronnie Quinn, Calvin Quinn, Steve Quinn and Roy Waters. Musical selections were rendered by Tiffany Switzer, Tammy Anderson and Jonathan and Ansley Hickox. Arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.

Lilla B. Creamer Barksdale

Lilla B. Creamer Barksdale, 77, died Thursday, January 14, 2010 in Toombs County. Mrs. Barksdale was born Aug. 31, 1932 in Lamar County to the late David and Odessa Creamer. She was a member of Ten Mile Creek Baptist Church. Mrs. Barksdale was retired from BellSouth. She is survived by her husband, Cooledge Jackson (Jack) Barksdale; one daughter, Velma Doris (Chester) Hofer of Milner; three sons, Nathan David (Sandy Jean) Barwick of Baxley, George (Michelle) Barksdale and Jack Lee (Shery) Barksdale; seven grandchildren, Christopher Lee Barwick, Stephanie Danielle Varnadore, John Paul Barwick, Jennifer Lillian Barwick of Baxley, A. J., Eli and Levi Barksdale of Milner; 11 great-grandchildren and nine nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 17 at Ten Mile Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Tommy Daniels and Elder Jerry Lightsey officiating. Interment followed in Fowler Cemetery in Soperton (Treutlen Co.). Active pallbearers were Dean Collins, Shawn Smith, Joel Carter, James Minick, Bill Tharpe and Dan Hinst. Honorary pallbearers were Naomi Sunday School Class and Ten Mile Creek Baptist Church. Musical selections were rendered by Kim Hall, Michelle Herrington and Abigail Gladin. Arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
