Oneice Edward "Ed" Tillman

Oneice Edward "Ed" Tillman, 87, (born July 27, 1925), of Jesup, died Saturday, October 6, in the Golden Living Center after an extended illness. The Wayne County, native was a member of the Church of Christ, a retired City of Jesup employee, and a volunteer with the Wayne Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. His wife, Marguerita M. Armstrong Tillman, predeceased him. Survivors are two daughters and sons-in-law, Jane (Steve) Williams, Jacquie (Billy) Roland, both of Jesup; two sons and daughters-in-law, Joe (Shirley Goss) Tillman, John Ed (Julie) Tillman, both of Marietta; six grandchildren, Joe Tillman, Jr., John Priester Tillman, Billy Roland, Jr., Scotty John Roland, Steven "Eugene" Williams, Jr., Sheila Williams; six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 10, at the Rinehart and Sons Chapel with Mark Ward officiating. Interment was in the Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery in Wayne County. Active pallbearers were grandchildren. Visitation was from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home. The Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home of Jesup was in charge of the arrangements. Dean Brown

Dean Brown, 68, died Monday, Oct. 15, 2012. A native of Pierce County, Dean was born March 29, 1944 to the late Peter Festus Brown and the late Maude Durance Brown. She was a member of First Assembly of God. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Daniel Ansley and Evelyn and Daniel Morris, all of Baxley; four sons and daughters-in-law, John Steven and Diane Murphy of Thalman, Donnie and Lisa Murphy of Offerman and John Henry and Angie Murphy of Douglas, Lonnie and Tammy Murphy of Screven and adopted son, Terry Turner of Baxley; two brothers, Robert Brown of Yulee, Fla. and H. G. Brown of Alma; ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17 from Swain Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Ronnie Rentz and Darrell Quinn officiating. Interment followed in Appling Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers were Daniel Ansley, Daniel Morris, William Terry Turner, Dale Lynch, Lonnie Murphy, Donnie Murphy and Scott Murphy. Honorary pallbearers were all friends in attendance. Arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.\

Gordon Duncan

Gordon Duncan, 68, passed away October 15, at the Pavilion. He was a native of Johnson County, and had lived the past 12 years in Appling County. Survivors include his sister, Bessie Wombles of Wrightsville, and Claudia Courson and husband William of Baxley; a brother, Charlie Mincey and wife Marandy of Baxley; two nephews, Robby Courson and wife Susan of Baxley, Casey Mincey and wife Katie of Macon; two nieces, Joyce Ann Brantley of Wrightsville and Shannon Studstill and husband Harley of Baxley; several great nieces, nephews and other family also survive. Funeral services were Friday, October 19, at 11:00 a.m. at the David E. Miles Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Marty Anderson and the Reverend Thad Harvey officiating. Visitation was from 9:00 11:00 a.m. prior to the services on Friday. Cremation will follow and a private memorialization will be held at a later date at Asbury Church Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be the staff of The Pavilion. David E. Miles Funeral Home is in charge of these arrangements.

Peggy Dixon Jackson

Peggy Dixon Jackson, 72, of Odum, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012 at her residence. Peggy was born Sept. 17, 1940 in Appling County, to the late Carl Eller Dixon, Sr. and the late Mary Ella Thornton Dixon. She was preceded in death by her son, Steven M. Holton, a sister, Sandra Leverette and a brother, Carl E. Dixon, Jr. Survivors include her husband, Wayne E. Jackson of Odum; three daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Gene Wells, Shari and Dallas Hazen and Stephanie and Tony Williams, all of St. Augustine, Fla.; one sister, Wanda Self of Brunswick; grandchildren, Sean Wells and Kari Judah, Matthew and Kelly Williams, Simon Wells and Cristin Kelly and Spenser Williams; and a great-granddaughter, Rialyn Wells. Funeral services for Peggy Jackson were held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 18 at Swain Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Parnell Aldridge and Jonathan Mann officiating. Interment followed in Big Creek Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Matthew Williams, Tony Williams, Spenser Williams, Sean Wells, Simon Wells and Kyle Blakney. Musical selections were rendered by Betty Williams. Memorials may be made to Hospice of South Georgia, 1625 Sunset Blvd., Jesup, Ga. 31545. Arrangements were under the directions of Swain Funeral Home.

Winston D. Johnson

Winston D. Johnson, 69, passed away October 16, at Appling Healthcare System. He was a native and lifelong resident of Appling County. He served in the Georgia National Guard for 16 years and was a Baptist by faith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Amelia K. Stephens Johnson. Survivors include two sons, Shawn Johnson and wife Karen of Douglas and Stephen Johnson of Baxley; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Smith of Alma and Edith Bass of Palatka, FL; two brothers, Wilbur "Jim" Johnson of Jacksonville, FL and Carroll Johnson of Blythe Island; nieces, nephews and other family also survive. Visitation was held Thursday, October 18, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services were held Friday, October 19, at 2:00 p.m. at the David E. Miles Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Bryant Bishop and the Reverend Keith Alderman officiating. Interment followed at Rose Hill Cemetery in Alma. David E. Miles Funeral Home was in charge of these arrangements.

Daniel Lee Blanton
(January 7, 1919 - October 23, 2012)

Daniel Lee Blanton, 93, of Hilliard, FL, passed away October 23. He was a native of Surrency, but lived most of his life in Hilliard, Fla., retiring as a truck driver. His passion for driving and his fur baby BB kept him active throughout the years until the last few months of his life due to his illness. Blanton is predeceased by his sons, Charles T. Blanton and Robert W. Blanton. Surviving family members include his wife of 70 years, Johnnie Blanton; their daughter, Vickie (James) Rhoden of Hilliard; seven sons, Harry Blanton of Hilliard, John (Mary) Blanton, Richard (Sue) Blanton of Jacksonville, Steve (Janet) Blanton, Roger (Diane) Blanton of Yulee, Fla., Joe (Tina) Blanton of Callahan, Fla. and Jeff (Sharon) Blanton of Hilliard; 22 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Visitation was held Wednesday, October 24, from 6:00 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services were held Thursday, October 25, at 10:00 a.m. from the David E. Miles Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Preston Coltrane and the Reverend Virgil Carter officiating. Interment followed at Memorial Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery. David E. Miles Funeral Home was in charge of these arrangements.

Patsy Owens Brock

Patsy Owens Brock, 66, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012 in the Appling HealthCare System. Mrs. Brock was born Jan. 27, 1946 to the late Earnest Willie and Mary Frances Owens. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Michelle Finch. Survivors include her husband, Joseph Brock of Baxley; two daughters and sons-in-law, Paula and Timmy Hudson of Lucama, N.C. and Charlene and Keith Price of Baxley; one son, Jeffrey Glenn Deans of Lucama, N.C.; two sisters and five brothers; a lifetime best friend, Louisa Bush of Baxley; six grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, Oct. 26 from Swain Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverends Roger LaRoche and Phillip Osteen officiating. Active pallbearers were Chris Williams, Jason Williams, Travis Coffman, Marshall Black, Robert Bush and Kyle Hardwick. Honorary pallbearers were the congregation of Calvary Baptist Church, congregation of Hope Baptist Church in Glenwood and Snow Hill Baptist Church of Glenwood. Musical selections were rendered by Dianne Osteen, Lamar Leggett and Jerry Tomberlin. Swain Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Michael Hardwick

Michael Hardwick, 69, died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012 in Southeast Georgia Health System in Brunswick. Michael was born Nov. 17, 1942 in Appling County, to the late Delton Hardwick and the late Anna Lee Reynolds Hardwick. He was retired after 20 years of service for Akzo as a truck driver. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Jan Hardwick of Baxley; one daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Clay Beasley of Baxley; two sons and daughter-in-law, Ricky Hardwick of Baxley, and Rodney and Carlyn Hardwick of Macon; one brother and sister-in-law, George and Sandy Hardwick of Griffin; five grandchildren, Jonathon Beasley, Amy Beasley, Stacy Beasley, Stephen Hardwick and Noah Hardwick and eight great-great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services for Michael Hardwick were held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27 from Swain Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverends Lamar Lee and Bryan Gill officiating. Interment followed in Moody Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Stephen Hardwick, Jon Beasley, Roy Colson, Charlie Erskin, Jerry Johnson and Bill Reynolds. Honorary pallbearers were Charlie Erskin, Jr., Tony Bruce, Shane Reeves, Stewart Reeves, Lester Simmons, Jason Reynolds, Terry Johnson, Noah Hardwick, Larry Tanner and James Reynolds. Musical selections were rendered by Eric Medford and Stephen Hardwick. Arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.

Brenda Sue Foskey Hewett

Miles Funeral Home in Hazlehurst announces the funeral services for Brenda Sue Foskey Hewett, 53, who died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012. Services were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Miles Funeral Home. Bro. E. C. Everett and Bro. Terry Miles officiated with burial following in Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Hewett was a native of Appling County. She was the daughter of the late Ervin Foskey and late Annie Lee Horne Foskey. She was a homemaker. Brenda Sue was preceded in death by her sister, Betty Taylor and her brother, Randy Foskey. Survivors include her husband, Jerry Hewett of Baxley; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mae Taylor, Virginia Roddenberry, Mary and Jack Beckner, all of Hazlehurst, and Marilyn and Larry Haymons of Lumber City; brothers and sisters-in-law, Russell and Victoria Foskey of Covington, Ervin Foskey, Jr. (Slim) and Vanessa Foskey of Columbus, Carroll Foskey, and Sam and Patricia Foskey of Hazlehurst; mother-in-law, Quinnelle Roberson of Hazlehurst; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Fay and Bo Shipes of Hazlehurst, Tammy and Bobby Miller of Snipesville and Kathy Hewett of Hazlehurst; one grandchild, Kobey Allison Hartley of Hazlehurst; and several nieces and nephews also survive. Active pallbearers were Bo Shipes, Larry Haymons, Jimmy Carter, Roy Roddenberry, Macky Sweat and Randy Hand. Miles Funeral Home in Hazlehurst was in charge of the arrangements.

Shelvia Jean Fulton Johnson

Shelvia Jean Fulton Johnson, 75, passed away Wednesday, October 24, at Candler Hospital in Savannah. She was a native and lifelong resident of Appling County, and a member of Baxley Freewill Baptist Church. She worked for Miller Western Wear and Town and Country Beauty Shop. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles "Runt" Johnson and daughter, Debbie Johnson Motte. Survivors include her six sons, John Johnson and wife Glenda of Baxley, Charles Johnson of Baxley, Dr. Keith Johnson and wife Patsy of Baxley, Kelvin Johnson of Baxley, James Johnson and wife Jenny of Jesup and Stanley Johnson and wife Tina of Baxley; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Visitation was held Friday, October 26, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services were held Saturday, October 27, at 10:30 a.m. at Baxley Freewill Baptist Church. Interment followed at Appling Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers were Buddy Aspinwall, James Twiggs, Dalton Lacy, Jack Johnson, Wendell Johnson Jimmy Allen, Brooks Johnson, AJ Johnson, John Hunter and Clay Martin. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Graham and staff and the Adult Sunday School Class at Baxley Freewill Baptist Church. David E. Miles Funeral Home was in charge of these arrangements.
