Lillie Mae Cullen Hatcher, 94, of Rochelle, passed away Friday, March 23, 2012 at her home. She was born on November 1, 1917 in Burke County. She was preceded in death by her parents: Maggie Lene Cullen and Willie Frank Royal, Sr.; husband: Thomas Felder Hatcher; five brothers: Cleveland Royal, D.H. Royal, W.F. Royal, Thomas Royal, and Fred Royal; and two sisters: Magalene Robertson and Mary Mobley. She is survived by nine nieces, two nephews, twenty great nieces and nephews, forty-seven great-great nieces and nephews, five great-great-great nieces and nephews, and one sister-in-law. Visitation was held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Saturday, March 24, at Hardy Towns Funeral Home in Eastman. Graveside Services were held at the Burke County Memorial Gardens in Waynesboro, at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday with the Rev. Nancy Lee Cater officiating. Towns Funeral Home of Alamo was in charge of arrangements.
Gary "Bubba" Herrington
Gary "Bubba" Herrington, 55, died Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at his residence. Bubba was born Oct. 6, 1956 in Appling County, and had resided here all of his life. He was a retired saw operator and had been employed with Baxley Veneer and Cleat. Herrington was a member of Miles Chapel. He was the son of the late Jack D. Herrington and Wanell Meeks Herrington. In addition to his father, Bubba was also preceded in death by a son, Tony Herrington and two brothers, Dennis and Dale Herrington. Survivors include is wife, Tina Herrington of Baxley; his mother, Wanelle Meeks Herrington of Baxley; a son and daughter-in-law, Todd Herrington and wife, Jeanie of Nicholls; two step-daughters, Jessica Wigley and Haley Wigley, both of Baxley; two sisters, Janet Herrington of Baxley, and Edith Herrington of Baxley; one brother, Stevie Herrington of Baxley; and four grandchildren, Collin, Autumn, Analee and Tristan also survive. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. at Big Oaks Church of God with the Rev. Mark Grimes officiating. Interment followed in Miles Chapel Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Alan Larsen, Kim Herrington, Donnie Herrington, James A. Herrington, Sonny Faulk, Dusty Larsen, Marshall Tompkins and H. B. Orvin. Honorary pallbearers were staff of Southern Care Hospice, Dr. Singh and staff, Lewis Cancer and Research Center and all friends in attendance. Musical selections were rendered by Big Oaks Church of God Choir. Arrangements were under the direction of David E. Miles Funeral Home.
Keith Kyle Herrington
Keith Kyle Herrington, 49, died Friday, March 16, 2012 in the Appling HealthCare System. He was born March 15, 1963 in Appling County, and had resided here all of his life. Herrington was a retired roofer and had been employed with Stone Roofing. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Myrtle Lee Haynes, Cindy Ann Herrington and Holly Marcine Herrington and brothers, Frank Benton Haynes, Ricky Dean, Terry Lee and John Stanley Herrington. He was the son of the late Ira Lee Herrington and the late Ruby Ophellie Haynes Herrington. Survivors include three sisters, Pamela Herrington, Melaine Miles and Tansy York, all of Baxley. Funeral services for Keith Kyle Herrington were held at 3:00 p.m. Monday, March 19 in David E. Miles Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Phillip Osteen and the Rev. Dennis Bryant officiating. Interment followed in Zion Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Don Medders, Wesley Stone, Jeremy Wolfe, Brad Disharoon, Raymond Glass, Curtis Stone, Calvin Brannon and Jackie Brannon. Musical selections were rendered by Floyd Hunter and Marty Thompson. Arrangements were under the direction of David E. Miles Funeral Home.
Lorretta M. Rawlson Bystrak
Lorretta M. Rawlson Bystrak, 73, of Surrency, died Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at her residence. She was a native of Brunswick, and resided in Gray, before moving to Surrency, three years ago. Loretta was a registered Nurse and was self-employed as a home health care nurse. She was the daughter of the late Lewis Rawlson and the late Barbara Head Rawlson. Survivors include her husband, Stephen Bystrak of Surrency; one daughter, Debra Baker of London, KY; two sons, James George and D. T. George, both of Gray and two grandchildren also survive. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 27 at Woodlawn Baptist Church with the Rev. Doug Weizel officiating. Burial was private. Musical selections were rendered by Betsy Weizel. Arrangements were under the direction of David E. Miles Funeral Home.
Allen Bruce Harris "Speed Ball"
Allen Bruce Harris "Speed Ball", died March 24, 2012 at Appling Healthcare System in Baxley. Allen was born in Sarasota, FL, on Jan. 7, 1963 to the late Ernest Harris, Jr. and Juanita Williams Harris. "Speed Ball", as he was affectionately called, was a joy to be around and was always willing to help a friend in need. He attended the Appling County School System. Harris loved life and lived it to its fullest. During his early life, he worked as a machine operator at a manufacturing company for a number of years. In addition to his father he is also preceded in death by his grandparents, Mrs. Tommie Williams, Richard F. Williams, Annie B. Harris and Earnest Harris, Sr. Survivors include his devoted mother, Juanita Williams Harris of Baxley; one daughter, Sharoder (Donervon) Bonhomme; one son, Jeffery B. Cray; one sister, Lisa Williams of Douglas; one brother, Charles Harris, Sr. (Sylvia) of Baxley; three grandchildren, Sunontia Davis, Shamarcia Bolton and Jakhouviya Cole; one special niece, Shannon Newk; three special nephews, Charles Jr., Pernell and Terrell; special aunt, Barbara Thomas of Baxley; aunts, Elizabeth Walters of Brunswick, Eyonne Harris of Sarasota, FL, Hazel Rivers of Alabama and Uira Garrte of Sarasota, FL; uncles, James Albert (Ida), Williams of Newark, NJ, Horace (Mamie) Williams of Athens, Ronell Williams of Savannah, Jack Harris of Sarasota, FL, and Jonny Harris of Alabama; one special cousin, Sharon Thomas; special friends, Rodney Cox of Baxley, Michael Copeland of Atlanta, Isaiah Barney of Hinesville and Roy Mumford of Baxley, along with a host of cousins and friends. Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, March 30 at Thankful New Jersey Missionary Baptist Church with Minister Starlon Byrd presiding and eulogy given by the Rev. Dr. B. J. Virgil officiating. Interment followed in Blarney Community Cemetery. Mary Josephine Perry
Mary Josephine Perry, 71, of Surrency, died Saturday, March 24, 2012 in Appling Healthcare System. Mrs. Perry was born Sept. 9, 1940 in Hazard, KY, to the late Howard Bud and Flossie Oliver Combs. She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Chad Perry, a son, James F. Perry and a host of brothers and sisters. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Leigh and Bo Herndon of Baxley, and Polly and Tony Moore of Alma; one son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Suzanne Perry of Augusta; three grandchildren, J. K. Perry, Chad Perry and Keaton Herndon; and extended family, Keith Morris and Mike Luke also survive. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
Beatrice Wallace-Vail
Beatrice Wallace-Vail, 74, passed away on Friday, March 23, 2012 at Appling County Healthcare System. She was born on September 20, 1937 to the late Roger P. and Rebecca Young Wallace in Springfield. Beatrice worked several years at Wayne County School system as a cook in the cafeteria and later did domestic work for P.D. Griffin, Stanley Stadnick and the Bennett families. She was a member of St. James Holiness Church in Screven. Beatrice was preceded in death by both parents, Roger and Rebecca Wallace; her loving husband, Leroy Vail; a daughter, JoAnn Ellis Jenkins; two sisters, Dorothy M. Dixon and Theresa Rawls; three brothers, Robert, Horace and Gary Wallace and a grandson, Jeffrey DeLoach. Survivors include, two daughters, Yolanda (Robert) Gibbs, Baxley and Barbara (Rick) DeLoach, Patterson; two sons, Donald (Doris) Vail of Screven and Allen Vail, Jesup; one sister, Earnestine (Harry) McRae of Screven; one brother, Gregory Wallace of Screven; five god children, NaTasha Mitchell, Tammy Malone, Enise, Brent Fussell and Pearl Williams; (13) grandchildren; (14) great-grandchildren; (two) great-great-grandchildren; her extended families the Griffins, Standwicks and the Bennetts, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Visitation was held on Friday, March 30, at Royal Funeral Home Chapel (black) from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 31, at Greater St. James Holiness Church in Screven, with interment in the Screven City Cemetery. Final arrangements were entrusted to Royal Funeral Home, Inc., of Jesup.
Jimmy Lee Woods
Jimmy Lee Woods, 68, of Surrency, died Wednesday, March 21, 2012 in Carl Vinson Medical Center in Dublin. Jimmy was born June 16, 1943 in Chatham County to the late Lee and Nellie Strickland Woods. He had resided in Ailey for the past 12 years. He worked as a self-employed transport company and was a member of Zion Baptist Church. Woods was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Woods Kauger; two sisters, Dorothy W. Treadaway and Vera W. Robinson; and a granddaughter, Harley Scott. Survivors include his wife, Belinda Nolan Woods of Ailey; two daughters, Victoria Scott of Toombs County and Nellie Woods of Montgomery County; two sons, Joseph L. Woods of San Diego, CA and Andrew (wife, Kelli) Woods of Atlanta; one step-daughter, Nichole Nolan; one sister, Angie Lindsey of Surrency; and three brothers, Jack Woods of Vidalia, Billy Woods of Newnan and Benny Woods of Baxley, also survive. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. March 24 at David E. Miles Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charles Hutcheson and the Rev. Phillip O'Steen officiating. Eulogy was given by Jack Woods. Interment followed in Woods Family Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Jack Woods, Benny Woods, Derrick Overstreet, Billy Woods, Greg Treadaway and Neal Burke. Richard Thomas Condon, Sr.
Richard Thomas Condon, Sr., 53, entered into the presence of God on April 4, 2012, after losing a battle with cancer. Richard was born in Pasadena, CA. He was retired from Hydratight. Survivors include wife, Dolores Condon of Baxley; children, Richard Thomas Condon, Jr. and Shaun Michael Condon; two grandchildren, stepchildren, Loretta Fritz, Arron Burnham and Toby Delatte; parents, Richard Lee Condon and Donna, Maryanne R. Young and Phil; sisters and brothers-in-law, Lynne and Chuck Vogel and Laura and Dan Hill. Memorial services will be held for the family in Condon's hometown in Southern California. A small gathering will be at his home for close friends. Details will be distributed to friends and family later. Arrangements were under the direction of Miles Funeral Home in Hazlehurst.
Hilda Burke
Hilda Burke, 80, of Jesup, died Tuesday, April 10, 2012 in Wayne Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. The Appling County native had lived in Jesup the past 56 years. She was a member of Jesup First Baptist Church and the Retired Educators Association. She volunteered with the Wayne Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and the Wayne County Peachy Clean Committee for many years. Her husbands, Watson Burke and Rufus Roberson preceded her in death along with a daughter-in-law, Willeen Burke. Survivors are one daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Shad Atkinson of Jesup; one son, Hugh Burke of Douglas; one grandson, Ethan and Megan Atkinson of Waycross; one granddaughter, Garland Burke of Douglas; one great-granddaughter, Kallyn Atkinson of Waycross; one special sister-in-law, Anna Lee Lightsey; three step-sisters, Sandra and Donald Westberry, Sarah and Ron Garner, Ellen Mullis, all of Jesup; and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services were at 4:00 p.m., Thursday, April 12, at Rinehart and Sons Chapel with the Rev. J.E. Blanton, Shad Atkinson and Stan Todd officiating. Interment was in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Hugh Burke, Shad Atkinson, Ethan Atkinson, J.C. Arnette, James Brown, and Al Copeland.
