Georgia Death Records, 1914-1940

Mervin V. Standifer, Sr.

Mervin V. Standifer, Sr. died Saturday, September 1, 2007 at his residence in Baxley. He was born July 11, 1942 in Fork Ridge, Kentucky, and had resided in Baxley, since 1998. He was a retired Meat Cutter and was a member of Consolation Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy serving in the Vietnam Conflict. He was the son of the late George Standifer and the late Ada Myers Standifer. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Janice Standifer of Baxley: two daughters and son's-in-law, Angela and Michael Fitch of Jefferson, GA. and Charlene and Jim Davey of Lakeworth, FL.: one son, Mervin V. Standifer, Jr. Of Cleveland, Ohio: four sisters, Fredis Smith of IN, Charlene McMillian of AZ. Christene Smith of AZ and Linda Easter of Mich.: six grandchildren also survive. Funeral services were held Monday, September 3, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. from the Consolation Baptist Church with Rev. Paul Dubberly and Rev. Jerry Newell officiating. Interment followed in the Zion Church of God Cemetery. Active pallbearers were John W. Waters, John R. Waters, James Tabor ,L. J. Oliver, Danny Standifer and Charles Pike. Honorary pallbearers were the Senior Adult Sunday School Class of Consolation Baptist Church. Musical selections were rendered by Jim Davey, Deloris Parker and Jessica Dubberly. Arrangements were under the direction of David E. Miles Funeral Home.

Josephus "Joe" Carter

Josephus "Joe" Carter age 76 of Milner, GA, died Sept. 2 in Upson County Regional Hospital after an short illness. Mr. Carter was born July 23, 1931 in Appling County, to the late Robert Claire Carter & the late Elma Knight Carter. He was retired from the Georgia State Labor Department as a supervisor and served in the Air Force as a sergeant. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Page Carter & a brother, Nathan Carter. He is survived by is his wife, Glady's Carter of Milner; 2 daughters, Joni Lynn( Tommy) Mann of Milner & Jane( Robert) Harkins of Sharpesburg; 1 son, Daniel (Lynn) Carter of Molena; 1 Sister, Janice Rozar of Baxley; 2 Brothers, David" Doodle Bug" Carter of Surrency & Tim Carter of Swainsboro, 7 grandchildren & 4 great-grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2007 at 11:00 A.M. from the Surrency City Cemetery. Rev. Mark Harris will officiate. Active pallbearers( Nephews) Visitation Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2007 6:00 until 8:00 pm at Swain Funeral Home Family will assemble at David "Doodle Bug" Carter, Rt. 1, Surrency, GA. Swain Funeral Home of Baxley, is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Grady Lynch

Grady Lynch, age 72, died Friday, December 7, 2007 in the Community Hospice in Vidalia, after a long illness. He was the owner and operator of Lynch Nursery and Landscape in Baxley. He was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy and was born April 27, 1935 to the late John A. Lynch and the late Manoma Teston Lynch Courson and the late Archie Courson. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Charlene Lynch of Baxley; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Sarah Lynch of Canton, Ga. And Harrell and Gail Lynch of Baxley; one brother, Wilbert Lynch of Baxley; three grandchildren, Dale Lynch, Amy Spell, and Kristen Lynch; two great- grandchildren Marley Lynch and Payton Spell, several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services were held Sunday, December 9, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of David E. Miles Funeral Home with Rev. Lester Weldon, Rev. Darrell Quinn and Rev. Bobby Stillwell officiating. Interment followed in the Omega Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Dale Lynch, Patrick Spell, Cecil Weaver, Ricky Weaver, Randy Weaver, Cleve Weaver, Bill Hardee and Jerry Hallman. Honorary pallbearers were the Community Hospice of Vidalia and the Altamaha Home Health Care and all friends in attendance. Musical selections were rendered by Sandra Nettles. Arrangements were under the direction of David E. Miles Funeral Home.

Steven Allen Lee, Jr.

Stephen Allen Lee, Jr., age 31, passed away Sunday, December 30, 2007 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born November 22, 1976 in Orlando, FL, and had resided in Baxley, for the past twenty-three years. He was employed with Raven Lewis as a carpenter. He was a member of Oak Grove Church of God. He is survived by his mother and father, Stephen and Sheila Lee of Baxley: a son, Dillon Lee of Baxley, and a daughter Amber Lee of Baxley; two sister and brothers-in-law, Stacie and Tommy Beecher of Baxley, and Shelly and Shawn Morris of Jesup; two brothers, Shawn Lee and Scott Lee both of Baxley. Paternal grandfather, William Lee Sr., of Baxley, paternal grandmother Norma Bratton of Orlando, FL, maternal grandmother, Freddie Horvatter of Baxley; fianc , Kim Roberson of Hazlehurst and her children, Courtney Tomberlin, Noah Tomberlin, Taylor and Tyler Kersey all of Hazlehurst; several aunts and uncles, and nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services were held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, January 2, 2008 in the chapel of David E. Miles Funeral Home with Rev. Dennis Bryant officiating. Interment followed in the Omega Cemetery, Baxley, GA. Active pallbearers were Travis Taylor, Tim Taylor, Waylon Slaughter, Scott Lee, Shawn Morris and Tommy Joe Beecher. Musical Selections were rendered by Kathy Temple, Debbie Taylor, and Dennis Bryant. David E. Miles Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Mary Oletha Taylor

Mary Oletha Taylor, age 87, died Tuesday, December 4, 2007 in the Bacon County Hospital in Alma, after a long illness. She was born January 30, 1920 in Appling County, and had resided here all of her life. She was a homemaker and a member of Satilla Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl N. Taylor and a son Philip Taylor. She was the daughter of the late Jim Medders and the late Ella Crosby Medders. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and J. W. Griffin of Baxley; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Waylon Taylor of Baxley, and Roy Malcolm and Shirley Taylor of Baxley; nine grandchildren and twenty-four great- grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services were held Friday, December 7, at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of David E. Miles Funeral Home with Rev. M. L. Ricks and Rev. Roger Taylor officiating and June Cauley gave the eulogy. Interment followed in the Satilla Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers were grandsons, Dion Griffin, Durwin Griffin, Dustin Griffin, Travis Taylor, Timothy Taylor and Waylon Slaughter. Honorary pallbearers were all friends in attendance. Musical selections were rendered by June Cauley and Freeda Jones. Arrangements were under the direction of David E. Miles Funeral Home.

Sarah Kersey Johnson

Sarah Kersey Johnson, age 72, died Wednesday, December 19, 2007 in Community Hospice of Vidalia. She was born September 6, 1935, in Appling County, and had lived here all of her life. She was a homemaker and a member of Carters Chapel Church of God of Prophecy. She was preceded in death by her husband Lloyd Johnson and a daughter, Sarah Nell Johnson. She was the daughter of the late John V. Kersey and the late Mary Carter Kersey. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law Mary and Billy Crews of Baxley: a son and daughter-in-law, Timmy and Gretchen Johnson of Baxley: two sisters, Nera Hand of Baxley, and Nancy Degler of Arkansas: three grandchildren, Torrie Crapps, Billy Crews, Jr. And Harold Allen Kidd: three great-grandchildren Chad Allen Crapps, Sumer Shaha Crapps and Dale Johnson: several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services were held Friday, December 21, at 2:00 P. M. in the Chapel of David E. Miles Funeral Home with Rev Andrew Kersey, Glenda Kersey and Rev. Danny Hix officiating: Interment followed in the Miles Chapel Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Randall Kersey, Jerry Kersey, David Kersey, Rickey Hampton, Donald Hampton and Terry Kersey. Honorary pallbearers were all friends attending the funeral service. Musical selections were rendered by Carol Chancey, Martha Sellers and Sandra Nettles. Arrangements were under the direction of David E. Miles Funeral Home.

David Thomas

David Thomas age 55 of Baxley, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2007 in St. Joseph Hospital in Savannah. Mr. Thomas was born September 28, 1952 in Appling County, to the late George Wilbur Thomas & the late Martha Gray Baxley Thomas. Survivors include 3 sisters, Ann Sisk of Clearwater, S.C. Louise Jones of Baxley, & Betty Jean Peacock of Greenville, S.C.; George Thomas of Baxley. Graveside services were held Monday, Dec. 31, 2007 at 2:00 P.M. at the Baxley Graveyard cemetery Rev Rick Brown officiated the service. Swain Funeral Home was in charge of all funeral arrangements.

Vivian Lynn Lewis

BAXLEY - Vivian Lynn Lewis, 67, died Friday, December 21, 2007 at The Hospice House of Savannah after an extended illness. Mrs. Lewis was born April 24, 1940 in Collins to the late Roy L. Lynn and Nina Glisson Lynn. She has resided in Appling County, for the past 50 years and was a seamstress with Baxley Garment and a manager at Captain D's. She was a member of Oak View Baptist Church and a contributor to the Faithful Friends Ministry of Altamaha Baptist Church. She was mother and father to her five children for the past 28 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald O. Lewis, grandson, Jonathan Watts; brother, Reginald Lynn; and sister, Barbara L. Seese. Survivors: daughters, Lyn L. Watts of Baxley, and Charmagne L. Landrum of Harlem; sons, Donnie O. Lewis and Chris D. Lewis both of Baxley, and Ronnie K. Lewis of Surrency; sister, Sandra L. Moreland of Frederick, MD; brothers, Kyle Lynn and Herbert Lynn both of Powder Springs, Donald Lynn of Tubec, Arizona, Wendell Lynn of Winston; and Delbert Lynn of Pt. St. Lucie, FL; 14 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Visitation: Sunday evening from 6 until 9 pm at Swain Funeral Home. Funeral Service: Monday, December 24, 2007 at 11:00 am from the Chapel of Swain Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Hutcheson and Rev. Phillip O'Steen officiating. Interment: Oak View Baptist Church Cemetery. Active Pallbearers: Joshua Watts, Andrew Lewis, Matthew Lewis, Jordan Watts, Nick Landrum, Marcus Lewis and Kade Lewis. Swain Funeral Home is in charge of all funeral arrangements.

Etta Lenora Derrington

Etta Lenore Derrington age 85 of San Antonio Texas, December 18, 2007. A native of Jacksonville, FL, she was born July 19, 1922 to the late Charles Benjamin & Carrie Stewart Dedmon. She was a member of Oak Hill Baptist Church in San Antonio and was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Kenneth E. Derrington. Survivors include her son, Ken R. Derrington of San Antonio, Texas; 2 grandsons, Michael B. Derrington of Richmond, KY and Johnathan E. Derrington of Orlando, FL; 1 great-grandson, Cameron Derrington of Richmond, KY. Visitation will be held Friday evening from 6 until 8 pm at Swain Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 22 at 1:00 pm from Faith Baptist Church with the Rev. Gary Conger and Rev. Charles Crummey officiating. Interment will follow in the Satilla Baptist Church Cemetery. Swain Funeral Home is in charge of all funeral arrangements.

Alice Carter Herrington

Alice Carter Herrington, age 93, of Baxley, passed away Sunday, December 16, 2007 in the Appling Nursing Home. Mrs. Herrington was born May 5, 1914 in Appling County, to the late Bud Chapman Carter & the late Lulu Sapp Carter. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Enoch Clayton Herrington and a daughter Velma Bass. Survivors include 2 daughters, Lavada Hallman & Mary Nell Hackler; 1 son, Frank Herrington of Baxley; 2 brothers, PC Carter of Baxley, and Ellis Carter of Spartanburg, SC. 1 sister Margie Leigh of Baxley. 11 grandchildren & 12 Great grandchildren & several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Tuesday, December 18, 2007 6:00 until 8:00 at Swain Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, December 19, 2007 at 2:00 pm from Ten Mile Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Gary Conger officiating. Swain funeral home is in charge of all funeral arrangements.
