Paul William Haffele, 79, passed away Thursday, November 15, 2012 at Community Hospice Facility in Vidalia. He was a Retired United States Navy Veteran of the Korean and Vietnam War. Haffele was a member of the Navy Fleet Reserve and a proud supporter of the Wounded Warriers and USO. He was in the automotive parts business for over 30 years. His wife of 41 years, Mary Jerrell Leggett Haffele, preceded him in death. Survivors include two daughters, Becky Berryhill of Baxley, and Lana Jean Stone and husband Steve of Baxley; four grandchildren, Chris Griffin, Matt Griffin, Mort Berryhill and Amy Berryhill; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Eldon Haffele of Apple River, IN; several nieces and nephews and a special friend, Nancy Handley. Visitation was held on Saturday, November 17, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. from the funeral home. Funeral Services were held Sunday, November 18, at 2:00 p.m. at the David E. Miles Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in Wesley Chapel Cemetery with full military honors. Juanita Aldridge Miles
Juanita Aldridge Miles, 92, died on the 18th of November 2012, under Hospice care at the family cottage on St. Simon's Island, after an extended illness. She was a native and lifelong resident of Appling County, having been born in Surrency, and spending her adult life in Baxley. She was a full time loving and caring mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend and confidant. Ms. Miles was a member of First Baptist Church of Baxley, a past officer and member of Queen Ester-Fidelis Sunday-School Class, a member of the Julia Jarman Circle at First Baptist Church for eight years, a member of First Baptist Church Choir for eighteen years, a member of Pine Forest Garden Club for twenty plus years, and an active member in regular bridge and canasta groups. Her husband, Dan Wilcox Miles, predeceased her. She is survived by her daughter, Laura Anne Miles Hays (Walter William Hays) of Colquitt; her son, Robert D. (Bob) Miles (Priscilla Marshall Miles) of St. Simons Island; five grandchildren, Mary Ansley H. Jones (Brant Jones) of St. Simons Island; Walter Williams Hays, Jr. of Athens, Laura Grace M. Moore (Ted Moore) of Savannah, Melanie Anne Hays of Memphis, TN, Dr. Robert D. Miles, Jr. (Laura Thompson) of Thomasville; nine great-grandchildren, Hayley Anne Jones, Walter William Hays III, Martha Thompson Miles, Jane Grace Moore, Brantley Kate Jones, Willard Emmett Miles, John Bishop Hays, Sarah Priscilla Moore and Mary Dubose Miles. She is also survived by her sister, Dorothy Aldridge Cansler of Flowery Branch. Her parents, Laura Ellen Tillman Aldridge and Claude Lee Aldridge of Surrency, predeceased her as did her four brothers, Theron, James, Tillman and Isaac Aldridge. Special appreciation is extended to her long-standing friend, secretary and records keeper, Lisa Pearce, as well as to her friend and loving caregiver, Shelia Goggins. Special recognition and heartfelt thanks are given to Doctors Anthony Moran, Tim Jamison and Marcia Certain and to Heartland Hospice and its kind and compassionate nurses and administrative staff. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21 at First Baptist Church, Baxley, with the Rev. Ronald Cansler, the Rev. Tommy Jordan and the Rev. Keith Alderman officiating. Interment followed in Omega Cemetery. Visitation was held Wednesday morning at the church from 9:30 to 10:30. Active pallbearers were Walter William Hays, Jr., Dr. Robert D. Miles Jr., William T. Moore, Jr., Brant Jones, Grady Miles, Jr., Allen Miles and Mike Miles. Honorary pallbearers were Queen Ester-Fidelis Sunday-School Class of First Baptist Church, Lisa Pearce, Glenn Pearce and all who were in attendance. Musical selections were rendered by the Rev. Tommy Jordan and David Williams. Waunell Denison Thornton
Waunell Denison Thornton, 86, of Bristol, died Saturday, November 24, 2012 in Golden Living Center after an extended illness. She was a member of Ritch Missionary Baptist Church and the Ladies Sunday School Class. For many years, she enjoyed operating the family business, Thornton's Grocery Store in Bristol, farming, gardening and being with her family. She was predeceased by her husband, James Harvey Thornton; several siblings, Wilton "Witt", Waldo "Wallie", Jay, Eugene "Dink" Denison and Angie Denison Thornton. Survivors are four daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Ruth and Willis Griffis of Jesup, Juanita Thornton Dykes Narvaez of Waycross, Shirley and Ronnie Thornton of Odum, Lori and Hayden Rozier II of Screven; a sister, Oretha Reese Denison Lewis of Pembroke; a sister-in-law, Ruby Thornton of Bristol; grandchildren, Mary Christina and Ronnie Smith of Brunswick, James Robert Dykes IV and wife, Pamela of Waynesboro, Christopher Michael and Lauren Dykes of Lizella, Angela Candace Thornton of Odum, Randall Rozier, III and Lorielle Rozier, both of Screven; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 24, at Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Derwin Griffin and Durwood Miller officiating. Interment was in Antioch Cemetery in Appling County. Active pallbearers were Randall Rozier, III, Mathew Vaughn, J.W. Boyette, Robert Eunice, Joey Boyette, Mark Boyette, Robbie Dykes, Michael Dykes and Dwight Thornton. Honorary pallbearers were her neighbor and best friend, Naomi Wynn and her roommate, Susie Thornton, her friend, Betty Leggett, the staff of Golden Living and the staff of Heartland Hospice. Visitation was from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. prior to services at the funeral home. Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home of Jesup were in charge of arrangements.

Luther Gordon "L.G." Beecher
(May 9, 1932 - November 18, 2012)
Baxley - Luther Gordon "L.G." Beecher, 80, passed away Sunday, November 18, 2012 at Candler Hospital in Savannah, after an extended illness. He was a native and lifelong resident of Baxley. He was a Charter Member and Trustee of Faith Baptist Church where he taught the Senior Saints Sunday School Class since 1993. He was a former Deacon and Sunday School teacher for over 30 years at Friendship Congregational Christian Church. He loved his family, gardening, growing flowers with Mrs. Christine and riding his tractor. He enjoyed supplying friends and family with watermelon. He was an avid deer hunter and fisherman and he loved the Lord. Survivors include his wife, Christine J. Beecher of Baxley; a daughter, Myrtle B. Johnson and husband Buddy of Hoschton, GA; a son, Luther Jerry Beecher and wife Chrystal of Baxley; three sisters, Carolyn Hazzard and husband Junior of Savannah, Roberta Williams of Glennville and Henrietta Campbell and husband Bill of Baxley; a brother, Harold Beecher and wife Dorothy of Canoochee; seven grandchildren Ryan Beecher, Eric Beecher, Jody Beecher, Keith Beecher, Haylei Beecher, Luke Beecher and Jamie Yarbrough; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and other family also survive. Visitation will be held Tuesday, November 20, 2012 from 6-8pm at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at 2 pm at Faith Baptist Church with the Reverend Gary Congers, Reverend Larry Morgan and Reverend Tommy Daniels officiating.

Harry Keith Cooper, 49, passed away on Saturday, November 17, 2012. He was born July 11, 1963 in Jacksonville, FL, and had lived there his entire life. Keith was of the Baptist faith, loved fishing and motorcycle riding. He was predeceased by his father, James Cooper. Survivors include his wife, Zozet; mother, Norma Cooper; stepsons, Christopher Rose, Jamie Gilbreth; stepdaughter, Rachelle Gilbreth; brothers, David Cooper, Jimmy Cooper (Debra), Rusty Cooper (Susan); step-granddaughter, Tori; nieces, April and Erica Cooper; step-nieces, Libby and Brittany; a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 21 at 11 am in the chapel of Cedar Bay Funeral Home, 405 New Berlin Road, Jacksonville, with Rev. Allen Carter officiating.
Interment will follow in Miles Chapel Cemetery in Baxley, GA.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening at the Cedar Bay Funeral Home from 6-8pm.

Mamie Lou Ahl, 89, passed away Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at Pigeon Forge Care and Rehabilitation Center in Pigeon Forge, TN. She was a native of Appling County, and a member of Bethesda Baptist Church in Dublin. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Franklin Ahl; parents, William E. and Lela B. Carter; four sisters, Zeda Carter, Bea Carter McClain, Molly Carter Holton and Audrey Carter Calloway and three brothers, Staten Carter, Willis Carter and Wade Carter. Survivors include three daughters, Martha (Carl) Crosby of Blackshear, Ammie (Johnny) Humphries of Danville, GA and Marilyn (Herb) Heichelbech of Sevierville, TN; a son, Jimmie (Jamie) Ahl of Sulphur, LA; nine grandchildren, Carla (Don) Nipper of Jacksonville, FL, Charles (Mona) Crosby of Waycross, Lamar Humphries of Danville, Angel (Ben) Pennington of Lumberton, TX, Eric (Summerly) Humphries of Cochran, GA, Melinda (Bill) Howell of Pigeon Forge, TN, Chris Kitchens of Seymour, TN, Tim Ahl of Houston, TX, and Tyra Ahl of Houston, TX; nine great-grandchildren, three step-grandchildren; a sister, Inez Hunter of Baxley; several nieces, nephews and other family members also survive.
Visitation will be held Friday, November 30, 2012 from 6-8 pm at the funeral home.
Graveside funeral services will be held Saturday, December 1, 2012 at 11 am at Carter Cemetery with Reverend Wayne Williamson officiating.
Interment will follow.

Edith Agnes Bayer, age 83, of Baxley, passed away Thursday, May 31, 2007 in the Appling Convalescence center. Mrs. Bayer was born September 29, 1923 in Pennsylvania, to the late Lewis W. Wagner & the late Edith Agnes Dimaline Wagner. She was of the First United Methodist Church and was the first designated lifetime member of the hospital auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis Ward Bayer & a son, Edward Lewis Bayer. Survivors include 2 sons & a daughter-in-law, Cliff Bayer of Baxley & Francis & Kathy Bayer of Strounds Burg. P.A. 5 Grandchildren & 5 Great Grandchildren. Memorial Services will be held Monday, June 4, 2007 at 4:00pm from the chapel of Swain Funeral Home. Rev. Alan Miller chosen minister.
Mr. Jack Lewis
Mr. Jack Lewis, age 71 of Baxley, died Tuesday, May 22, 2007 at the Appling Healthcare system after an extended illness. Mr. Lewis was born December 24, 1935 in Thomasville, Ga., to the late John Miles Lewis & the late Eula Dee Weldon Lewis. He had lived in Appling County, for the past 60 years and was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church and was retired from the United States Post Office & was a charter member of the Appling Co. Country Club. He was preceded in death by his brother, Johnny Lewis. Survivors include his wife, Valeria G. Lewis of Baxley; son & daughter-in-law, Lindsey K. & Jill Lewis of Kennesaw; 2 sisters & brother-in-law, Mike & Angie Lewis of Alston, and Kevin & Tammy Lewis of Baxley; 3 Grandchildren, Kathryn Lewis, Andrew Lewis, & Abigail Lewis all of Kennesaw; several nieces & nephews also survive.
Active Pallbearers are Kale Lewis, Tim Varnadore, Rodney G. Carter, Shane Reeves, Brent Lewis, and Tommy Phillips.
Interment will be at Ten Mile Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

James Edward Rowell, age 40 of Baxley, died Sunday May 13, 2007 in the Appling Healthcare System after a Brief illness. He was born December 6, 1966 to Edward & Lanell Watts Rowell. He resided in Baxley, in which he was born and raised. He was a member of Midway Baptist Church. He was co-owner & co-operator of RBI Services Electrician. He was as avid sport man and thoroughly enjoyed hunting & fishing with his longtime best friend, Jeff Lashley. He enjoyed motorcycle riding and most importantly spending time with family & close friends. Survivors included: one daughter, Tiffany Nichole Rowell of Hazlehurst; Two sons, Gregory D. Mano & James Caleb Googe both of Baxley; Fianc , Angle Jenkins & her three children, Hunter, Memphis, & Skyler all of Baxley; Parents, Edward & Lanell Rowell of Baxley; One brother & sister-in-law, Ronald T. & Amy Rowell of Baxley; Nephew, Walker T. Rowell & a niece, Amberly Rentz both of Baxley.
