Ozella W. Taylor
CUTHBERT - Ozella W. Taylor, 80, died Thursday, October 17, 2002, after a lengthy illness. She resided in Cuthbert for forty seven years before returning to Columbus in 1997. Mrs. Taylor moved to Cuthbert from Columbus in 1950 with her first husband, Charles B. Lynn, who was employed by Burgin Lumber Co. After the death of Mr. Lynn, she married Walter E. Taylor Jr., an attorney in Cuthbert.
She was born August 22, 1922, the daughter of Candler W. White and Elsie Whitten White of Columbus.
Mrs. Taylor had a special relationship with the citizens of Cuthbert where she was affectionately known as "Miss Ozella." She frequently credited the people of Cuthbert for giving her fifty years of life. Diagnosed with Hodgkins disease in 1950, she was given less than three years to live. With her courageous spirit and the assistance of her community, she defied the prognosis. She spent the better part of her life trying to repay the kindness of those in her community. Her work from 1966 to 1980 as executive secretary of the Randolph County Chamber of Commerce is well documented. She also served as president of the Randolph Co. Historical Society, worked on the Cuthbert Planning and Zoning Commission, served as judge in the Small Claims Court of Randolph County, and held various roles of leadership in her church.
Mrs. Taylor was active in First Baptist Church of Cuthbert. After returning to Columbus, she moved her membership to Wynnton United Methodist Church where she quickly became involved in the church activities.
Mrs. Taylor is survived by her daughter, Jane Lynn Hornsby of Carrollton; two sons, Charles B. Lynn Jr. of Suwanee and George D. Lynn of Clarkson, MI; a brother, Ozborne White of Columbus; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Although they were almost grown when she married Mr. Taylor, she considered his three sons her family. They are Benjamin Taylor of Eufaula, AL, Michael Taylor of Lilburn and Phillip Taylor of Winder.
A graveside funeral service will be conducted in East View Cemetery in Cuthbert at 3 p.m. Saturday. Dr. Glenn Martin, pastor of Wynnton United Methodist Church will officiate.
Visitation will be today from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
