Findley Bartow Edge
ORLANDO, FL - Word has been received in Albany of the death of the Rev. Dr. Findley Bartow Edge, Albany native and longtime professor of religious education at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.
Dr. Edge died in Orlando, Florida, on October 28, 2002, at age 86. Born in Albany in September of 1916, Dr. Edge was educated in the Albany schools and was graduated from Albany High School in 1933. In the senior year, he was the recipient of the McIntosh Award. He was given a basketball scholarship to attend Stetson University in DeLand, Florida, and there earned the Bachelor of Arts degree. The Master of Theology and Doctor of Theology degrees were earned at Southern Seminary and the Master of Arts degree at Yale University. A Doctor of Divinity degree was conferred upon him by Stetson.
Dr. Edge's first church affiliation was with the First Baptist Church of Albany where he was baptized into the Christian faith. It was from this church that he went forth into the Baptist ministry, and in the early years of his career held pastorates in Kentucky and in Florida prior to joining the faculty at the seminary.
Dr. Edge held the Basil Manley Chair of Religious Education at Southern. In great demand as a lecturer and teacher, both in this country and abroad, his numerous writings on Christian life were translated into a number of languages for use in colleges and seminaries worldwide. During his long career, Dr. Edge was the author of more than 80 published works. His books included, "Teaching For Results," a standard text in seminaries for more than 40 years; "Helping the Teacher," which was dedicated to his mother; "A Quest for Vitality in Religion," a work the Rev. Dr. Billy Graham once termed indispensable; "The Greening of the Church," dedicated to his brother; and "The Doctrine of the Laity."
Under the seminary's auspices, he founded the Vineyard, an interdenominational conference center for study and spiritual renewal which was an innovative move in the Protestant church. As the conservatives gained control of the Baptist denomination in the 1970s and 1980s, Dr. Edge's ecumenical views proved too liberal for the new establishment. Not surprisingly, he remained faithful to his personal beliefs and convictions, formulated over a lifetime of study and prayer, continuing to write and teach and lecture without undue regard for current trends of the day. Most observers of the Christian church in America during that time agreed that, as a result, his stature only increased. By the time of his death, he was hailed by his eulogist, the Rev. Dr. Edward Hammett, as "a giant in Baptist Life - friend and critic of the institutional church."
Dr. Edge was a past member of the board of directors of the National Religious Education Association. Long included in "The Directory of American Scholars," he was also listed in "Who's Who in America," as well as various other publications, scholarly and otherwise, too numerous to mention. At the time of his retirement from the seminary, Edge Court on the seminary grounds was dedicated in his honor.
Dr. Edge's love of basketball was rivalled only by a passion for golf. He is buried in the Palm Cemetery at Winter Park just off the sixth fairway of the local golf course. That way, he told his older son, he could come out at night to look for balls he had lost in years past.
Dr. Edge was preceded in death by his father, John Andrew Edge, and his mother, Daisy Findley Edge, whom he always called his first and best teacher, and a brother, Hoyt D. Edge Sr., longtime Albany banker and civic leader.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Louvenia Littleton Edge of Orlando, herself a published author in the field of early childhood religious education; two sons, Larry Findley Edge of Claremont, Florida, and Dr. Hoyt Littleton Edge of Winter Park; a granddaughter, Shannon Elizabeth Edge of Utrecht, The Netherlands; and locally, a sister-in-law, Mrs. Hoyt D. Edge Sr., and nephew, Hoyt D. Edge Jr.; and in Macon, a first cousin, Mrs. Grady L. Rockett Sr.; and her children and grandchildren.
An Albany cousin, Mrs. Albert Cates, passed away November 5, 2002, a week after Dr. Edge.
