Joe B. Adams Jr. was a devoted husband to Candace (Candy) Head Adams. They were married August 17, 1969.
Joe Adams is survived by his wife, Candy Adams; one son, Joe B. Adams III of Albany and his daughter-in-law, Shawn Davis Adams and his father-in-law, Cameron Head of Camilla. In addition to grandchildren, Davis-Anne Adams and Joe Barber Adams IV, Mr. Adams leaves his sister, Barbara Adams Hilliard and his brother, Martin Miley Adams, both of Camilla. He had four nephews, four nieces, two grand nieces, four grand nephews, and innumerable cousins, friends and admirers.
Joe B. Adams Jr. graduated from Auburn University in 1969 with a degree in Business. After serving in the National Guard, Joe began his career as a pecan and row crop farmer. For many years, he was a partner with his brother, Miley Adams, in an extensive and very successful pecan and row crop farming operation.
Joe faithfully and wisely served the pecan industry for many years in various positions of responsibility. He was on the board of directors of the Southeastern Growers Association (SEPGA) from 1984 until 1990. In 1990 and 1991, he was chosen as Vice President and in 1992 and 1993 was elevated to the office of the president of SEPGA. His fellow growers honored him in 1991 with the "Leadership and Dedication Award." In 1994, he was named the "Outstanding Pecan Grower" in the southeastern United States and in 2002 received SEPGA's "Outstanding Sustained Service Award." Joe also was a past director and past president of the Georgia Pecan Growers Association. In 2002, GPGA bestowed upon him its "Award for Years of Service to GPGA and the Georgia Commodity Commission for Pecans." Joe was a leader in instigating the pecan checkoff and pecan crop insurance, all for the betterment of the entire industry.
One friend was quoted "When you think of Joe Adams, you think of commitment. Joe was committed to his wife, his family, his friends, his profession and to any endeavor he threw himself into. His long battle with cancer confirmed his indomitable spirit and he showed us all not only how to live but how to meet our Lord. He was loved and cherished by his family." Tom Crocker, longtime pecan specialist for the Georgia Extension Service stated that "Joe was a wonderful man as best as anyone I've ever known." Mike Horne an Americus pecan grower and industry leader said "one of the strongest men I have known -I respected him right at the top- not only in pecans but in integrity and character. He was a very close personal friend." Jack Williams of Mitchell County Farm Service confirmed that "Joe was a friend and a customer. He was very low key, very friendly, very smart and a good business person. He had impeccable integrity." Don Howell said "Joe was as fine a person as I've ever known and I don't know and I can't say anything bad about him." Marty Harrell was effusive and sincere in his praise when he said "Joe Adams always went above and beyond the call of duty - he was my mentor and best friend. As a pecan buyer I have done business with Joe for close to thirty years. He always conducted himself as a true Southern gentleman. He had a passion for the pecan industry - giving of his time and knowledge to help others - this was important to him. I, as well as many others, have benefited greatly from his advice, knowledge and friendship."
