Elder Virgil Y. Spivey, age 79, died Friday October 3, 2003 at the East Georgia Regional Medical Center after a prolonged illness. The Tattnall County native lived in Statesboro for the past 33 years. Elder Spivey was a member and retired minister of the Lower Mill Creek Primitive Baptist Church in Statesboro. He served other churches in the Lotts Creek and the Bethlehem Associations in Georgia and the Prince William Association in South Carolina. Mr. Spivey was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in World War II and Co-founder of Bulloch Memorial Gardens. He is survived by his wife, Letha Sue Johnson Spivey of Statesboro; two daughters and sons-in-law, Elaine and Pat Byrnes of Savannah and Janiece and Frank Pearson of Statesboro; a son Tommy Spivey of Statesboro; a brother and two sisters in law, Leo and Kathleen Spivey of Savannah and Mildred Spivey of Statesboro; four grandchildren, Tony and Diana Pearson of Macon, Royce Pearson of Statesboro, Patrick and Christopher Byrnes of Savannah. Funeral services will be held Monday at 11:00am in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with Elder Daniel Strickland and Elder Jack Anderson officiating . Entombment will be in the Bulloch Memorial Gardens Mausoleum with Elder W.C. Lane officiating.
Pallbearers will be Bill Jones, Jerry Spivey, Lewis Spivey, Wayne Dasher, Shad Dasher, Shane Brannen and Glen Dasher.
Visitation will be Sunday from 5:00pm until 8:00pm at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home.

Mrs. Juanita Wiggins Coursey
Statesboro, Georgia
Mrs. Juanita Wiggins Coursey, age 79, died Saturday, September 27, 2003 at East Georgia Regional Medical Center. The Jenkins County native was the daughter of the late Chester and Laura Johnson Wiggins. She lived in Atlanta for 37 years, where she worked for Rich’s as a bookkeeper, and as a Government Exchange Assistant Manager. She moved to Statesboro in 1982. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lewis Coursey. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Robert Shelton and Robbie Coursey of Orlando Fla; two granddaughters, Crystal Coursey of Atlanta and Shelley Coursey of Orlanda, Fla; two sisters, Jerlene Monroe of Griffin, Ga and Sandra Smith of Savannah; two brothers, Robert Wiggins of Statesboro and Vernie Wiggins of Savannah. The funeral service will be held Monday at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home, with the Rev. James Barnes, officiating. Burial will be in Eastside Cemetery.

Mrs. Susie Dean Mitchell Swint
Bulloch County, Ga.
Mrs. Susie Dean Mitchell Swint, age 73, died Tuesday, at Memorial Medical Center after a brief illness. The native and lifelong resident of Bulloch County was a graduate of Stilson High School, and was a retired L.P.N. Mrs. Swint was a member of the Upper Black Creek Primitive Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Absalum J. Swint. Mrs. Swint is survived by three sons and two daughters in law; Allen Swint , Mitchell and Elizabeth Swint all of Bulloch County and Marc and Laura Swint of Cartersville, Ga.; one daughter and son in law Nancy and Richard Snyder of Bulloch County. Eight grandchildren also survive; Matthew and Nicholas Swint, Melissa, Maggie, Michael and Levi Snyder all of Bulloch County, and Katie and Abby Swint of Cartersville Ga.; three sisters, Janie Bourgeois of Bulloch County, Emma Sims of Savannah and Lula Faye Heard of Houston, Tx. Funeral services for Mrs. Swint will be held on Friday at 2:00 p.m. at Upper Black Creek Primitive Baptist Church with Elders Howard Cox and Woodrow Beasley officiating. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home.

Mr. William Harris “Red” Lively, age 78, died Thursday afternoon at his residence under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. The native and life long resident of Bulloch County was a veteran of the U.S. Army and former member of the American Legion. Mr. Lively owned and operated Lively’s Garage in Statesboro for many years. Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Dorothy Thompson Lively of Register; two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and John Land of Griffin and Brenda and Richard Harrelson of Metter; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Rick Lively of Register and David and Linda Lively of Thomson, Ga.; 9 grandchildren, Chad and Brent Land, John and Rick Lively, Josh and Matt Fulmer, Randi Harrelson, Brandon and Ashley Lively; 4 great grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Clyde Nessmith of Hopewell, VA. Mr. Mitchell "Mickey" Daughtry
Mr. Mitchell Marion ”Mickey” Daughtry age 56, passed away Monday at Dwight David Eisenhower Army Medical Center at Fort Gordon following a brief illness. The Bulloch County native graduated from Marvin Pittman High school in 1966. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was medically retired. Mr. Daughtry was a 1993 graduate of Georgia Southern University and had lived in Waynesboro for the past several years. He was a member of the Macedonia Baptist Church.He was preced in death by his parents, Clarence and Margaret Daughtry. Surviving are his wife ,Carol Elaine Belin Daughtry of Waynesboro, three daughters and two sons-in-law, Jodi Lynn and Willis May of Waynesboro, Jennifer Elaine Daughtry of Statesboro and Julie and Joseph Taylor of Waynesboro; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Scott and Sarina Daughtry of Statesboro and Mitchell Daughtry, Jr. of Waynesboro. One sister, Carolyn Jenkins of Statesboro; two brothers, C.L. Daughtry, Jr. of Millen and Freddy Daughtry of Statesboro; four grandchildren, Warren Daughtry, Katelyn Daughtry, Breeanna Daughtry, and Joseph Allen Taylor, Jr. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Macedonia Baptist Church with Rev. Dan Zellner officiating, assisted by Rev. Andrew Lee. The body will lie in state one hour prior.
Burial with full military honors will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Gilbert M. Roeder
Statesboro, Ga.
Mr. Gilbert M. Roeder, age 88, died Friday after an extended illness. Mr. Roeder was born in Hastings, Nebraska and retired in West Palm Beach, FL. He spent his later years in Statesboro. He was a retired Captain was TWA. He served in World War II, as a Captain in the 8th Air Force, 306th Bombardment Group, 368th Bomber Squadron (H), known as the “The First over Germany”. He received special citation from General J. Doolittle for accomplishments, four Distinguished Flying Crosses, and also four Air Medals. Mr. Roeder was a member of the TWA “TARPA” Retired Pilots Association. He was a Captain with TWA for 30 years. He enjoyed travel around the world and developed many friendships in his travels. Mr. Roeder was of the Methodist faith. Surviving are his two daughters and one son-in-law; Karen Roeder of Savannah, and Robbin and Jimmy Mooney of Statesboro and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mr. Roeder will be Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Huling officiating. Visitation will be Monday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home. Mrs. Ester Rigdon Hendrix, age 89, died Saturday at the Sunbridge Rehabilitation Center of Statesboro. The native and lifelong resident of Bulloch County lived in the Nevils Community all of her life. Mrs. Hendrix was a homemaker and a member of the Trinity Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ira Hendrix. Surviving are two daughters and a son in law, Iris and Harold Brannen and Willette Beasley all of Statesboro; two sons and a daughter in law, Billy Hendrix and Bobby and Ellen Hendrix all of Nevils; Eight grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held Monday at 11:00am in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with Elder Mike Newman officiating assisted by Rev. Will Griffith. Burial will be in Eastside Cemetery.

Mrs. Patricia “Pat-Pat” Mathewson Robbins, 76, died peacefully December 12, 2003 at East Georgia Regional Medical Center. She was the wife of the late Charles Marion Robbins, Jr.
She is survived by her son; Charles Marion Robbins III of Macon; her daughters Cindy Moore of Savannah, Patty Gould of Cornelia, and Tracy Payne of Acworth; her sister, Clara Robinson, of Augusta. Mrs. Robbins is also survived by her six beloved grandchildren; Tracy Chandler, Will Chandler, Hamilton Gould, Richard Gould, Chaz Robbins, and Charlie Payne. A private funeral service held Saturday on the gazebo at The Robbins Nest with Dr. Don Adams officiating. Remembrances may be sent to The Charles Marion Robbins Golf Scholarship Fund;

Mr. John Charles Joiner
Millen, Ga.
Mr. John Charles Joiner, age 55, died Friday at his residence. The native and life long resident of Jenkins County was a member of the 1968 graduating class of Jenkins County High School where he was a star football player. Mr. Joiner was a graduate of Brewton-Parker College, Southwest Georgia College and a 2003 honor graduate of Ogeechee Technical College. He was a real estate agent, carpenter and worked for 10 years with Southern Railroad. Mr. Joiner was a member of the Local Carpenter Union #256 of Savannah, the SEV Confederate Veterans and the Association of Landowners and Leaseholders. He was a member of the Millen Baptist Church. Mr. Joiner was an avid local historian and a Civil War History Buff. Surviving are his daughter, Carrie E. Joiner of Vidalia; his parents, Gary and Juanita McLean Joiner of Millen; three brothers, Gary C. Joiner of Statesboro, Mickey Joiner of Martinez and twin brother, Jimmy Joiner of Sylvania; two sisters, Meia Joiner of Garden City and Sandra Tabb of Martinez; several nieces and nephews, including Kirk Brandon Joiner and Victoria Lana Joiner both of Sylvania. Graveside services and burial will be held Monday at 2:00pm at the Ben Lanier Lane Cemetery in Jenkins County with Dr, Maurice Crowder officiating. Visitation will be Sunday from 7:00pm until 9:00pm at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home. Mr. Chris Balding, age 40, died Saturday at Memorial Medical Center from injuries sustained in an auto accident. The Oklahoma native lived in Bulloch County most of his life. He was employed with JCB Inc. in Pooler as a team leader. Mr. Balding was a member of the Statesboro Church of God. Surviving are his wife Donna Bradley Balding of Statesboro; a daughter and son- in-law, Kristen and Rich Molina of Rincon; two sons, C.J. Balding and Cameron Balding both of Rincon; a granddaughter, Laura Grace Molina of Rincon; his mother and step father, Katie and Larry Hart of Cleveland, Tn; a sister, Angel Reed of Atlanta; a brother, John Hart of Cleveland, Tn; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Doris and Dudley Bradley, Sr. of Statesboro. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11:00am at the Statesboro Church of God with Rev. Will Griffith officiating, assisted by Rev. Wayne Swanson. Burial will be in the Bulloch Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Earl R. Nelson

Mr. Earl Reed Nelson, age 85, died Friday at his residence under the care of Hospice Savannah. The Birmingham, Ala. native lived in Savannah for several years before moving to Bulloch County in 1956. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Mr. Nelson was a retired Master Builder in which two of his major accomplishments were the construction of Plant Vogtle and the Talmadge Bridge in Savannah. He was a member of the Carpenters Local Union #256 of Savannah. Mr. Nelson was a member of the Old Fellowship Baptist Church were he was a former deacon. He was preceded in death by daughter, Patti Nelson. Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Nora S. Nelson of Bulloch County; a daughter and son in law, Vicki and Aaron Belcher of Bulloch County; a son and his companion, Dennis Nelson and Minnie Ranew of Bulloch County; five grandchildren, Justin Belcher and his wife Faith of Tampa, Fla., Alyssa Belcher of Statesboro, Becki Belcher of Statesboro, Dennis Nelson of Ellabell and Carla Nelson of Savannah; two great grandchildren, Erica Nelson Anderson of California and Eric Nelson of Ellabell; a great great grandchild, Andrew Shane Anderson of California; a brother and sister in law, Vernon and Erin Nelson of Savannah; two sisters, Ernestine Adams of Savannah and Melba Moore of Savannah. Mrs. Janie Huff Key, age 74, died Wednesday at the East Georgia Regional Medical Center. The native and life long resident of Bulloch County was educated in the Bulloch County School system. Mrs. Key was a homemaker and a member of the Stevens Temple Church of Christ. She was a devoted wife and mother. Mrs. Key was preceded in death by her husband Winton Key and a daughter, Carolyn Key. Surviving are 6 daughters and four sons-in-law, Arjean and Ivory Holland of Brooklet, Linda Bellemy, Machelle Key, Billie and Nathan Goldwire and Joan and Robbie Wilson all of Statesboro and Yevett and Darryl McClenton of Milledgeville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Winton, Jr. and Verda Key of Statesboro and Jeremiah and Daisy Key of Brooklet; a special friend of the family Emory Benamone; a sister, Grace Lee of Tampa, Fl.; a brother and sister in law, Robert and Essie Huff of Waynesboro. 27 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 1:00pm at the Stevens Temple Church of Christ with Elder Emory Hagins officiating. Burial will be in the Bulloch Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Dolores C. Barton
Lilburn, Ga.
Mrs. Dolores DeLoach Barton, age 70, died Wednesday, January 28th, 2004 in Atlanta, Ga. The Bulloch County native graduated from Statesboro High School in 1951 and went on to receive her radiology technologist degree from Augusta Medical College(now Medical College of Georgia). Upon graduation from school she was employed with Bulloch County Hospital. Mrs. Barton moved with her family to the Atlanta area in 1965 and they started the Towne &Country Schools, a daycare center in Lilburn, Ga. She managed the daycare center until 1983 when they sold the business and retired. Surviving are her husband of 50 years, Dan P. Barton, Jr. of Lilburn, Ga.; three daughters and a son in law, Joanna Barton and Danna and Bennett Finklea all of Suwanee and Kristy Barton of Duluth; a grandson, Daniel Graham Finklea of Suwanee; her mother, Anna Rea DeLoach of Gainesville; two sisters, Donna Shaw of Clayton and Bobbie Jean Sikes of Dacula. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:00pm in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with Elder Steve Taylor officiating. Burial will be in the Eastside Cemetery in Statesboro.

Mr. John W. Franklin
Statesboro, Ga.
Mr. John Wilson Franklin, age 54, died Monday. The native and lifelong resident of Bulloch County was a 1967 graduate of Statesboro High School. He was a Major with the Statesboro police Department having served 16 years. For the past fourteen years he worked as an employer marketing representative for the Georgia Department of Labor and attended Register Baptist Church. He enjoyed restoring classic vehicles, military history and was an avid collector of 1950’s memorabilia. Mr. Franklin was preceded in death by his parents, George Russell Franklin, Sr. and Ruth Edwina Hart Franklin. Surviving are two daughters, Amanda Kaye Franklin and her companion Gerald Wayne Morris, Jr. and Victoria Elaine Franklin all of Sylvania. A granddaughter, Hannah Kaytlin Morris and grandson, Hunter Wayne Morris; a very special companion, Barbara Rushing and her children, Johnathan and Stefanie Logan of Register; One brother Russell Franklin of Statesboro, five sisters and four brothers-in-law Ruth Helen Fletcher, Linda and Sherwood Boyd, Judy and Brooks Nichols, all of Statesboro, Joyce and Steve Morrison of Savannah and Milbry Ann and Bill Griner of Ayden, North Carolina. Many nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be Thursday at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with Dr. Bill Eckles officiating Burial will be in the Bulloch Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be nephews.
