LAKE PARK -- Lillie Z. Alderman, 91, died on Thursday, April 13, 2000 at her home in Lake Park. Born in Lowndes County, she was the daughter of the late Horace and Lou Chason Zipperer. She was a drapery seamstress and was associated with the Diana Shop for many years. Mrs. Alderman was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. She is survived by three grandchildren, Joel Roberts, Simpsonville, S.C., Cherryl Thompson, Savannah, Marcus Roberts, Griffin; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; two sisters, Rena Gay, St. Augustine, Fla., Sarah Cothron Dasher, Lake Park; and a brother, Ollie Zipperer, Clyattville. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. The Rev. Phillip Badley, pastor of Lake Park Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be held in Mt. VALDOSTA -- George E. Craig Jr., 85, Valdosta, died Friday, April 14, 2000 after a lengthy illness. He was born on Oct. 11, 1914 in Valdosta to the late George E. Sr. and Mattie Craig. Mr. Craig was a member of the Redland Baptist Church, was a mason and a shriner. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Wyolene Cherry Craig and a brother, Wilbur Craig. Fred Stafford Davis Sr.
HOMERVILLE -- Fred Stafford Davis Sr., 79, passed away Thursday, April 13, 2000 at the South Georgia Medical Center following a short illness. A native of Ware County, he had lived in Clinch County since 1981. He was a retired Service Station Mechanic and was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II. He was the son of the late Jordan Davis and Pearl Lynn Davis. Survivors are two daughters, Anna Marie Devita, Waycross and Judy Raulerson, Blackshear; eight sons, Mike Davis, Homerville, Fred S. Davis Jr. and Ronnie Lee Davis, both of Waycross, Kenneth Charlie Davis, Blackshear, B.J. Davis, Lakeland, Bobby Davis, Manor, Billy Davis and "Buddy" Davis, both of Homerville; one sister, Carol King, Waycross; two brothers, Bobby Jack Davis, Nicholls and Bill Davis, Knoxville, Tenn; 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several other relatives. He was a service technician for General Electric and was of the Baptist faith. He is survived by one daughter, Robin Duba, Atlanta; one brother, Doug Finney, Madison, Fla.; one grandson, Nicholas James Roger Goodwin, Atlanta; a very special friend, Ellen Winslow, Tallahassee. QUITMAN -- Sarah Strozier Knight, 98, Quitman, died Friday, April 14, 2000 at the Presbyterian Home in Quitman after a lengthy illness. Born in Crisp County, she was the daughter of Eugene Franklin and Morment Cutts Strozier. Mrs. Knight was a homemaker and a member of the Episcopal Church. She was the oldest continuous member of the Daughters of the American Revolution in the state of Georgia. She is survived by two sons, W. Taylor Knight Jr., New York, N.Y., Eugene Strozier Knight, Gulf Shores, Ala.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. James Lawton Riley
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- Brig. Gen. James Lawton "J.L." Riley (U.S. Air Force, retired), 89, died Tuesday, April 11, 2000 at St. Lukes Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla. General Riley was a native of Atlanta, born on March 12, 1911. He was a graduate of Emory University College, Emory Law School and Harvard Business School. He practiced law for five years in Atlanta, spent five years in the Air Corps as a pilot and returned to his law practice for five years. He was recalled as an Air Force pilot in 1950, flying fighters, bombers, transports and helicopters. General Riley retired as Commander in November 1965 of the 4th Air Force at Randolph AFB, San Antonio, Texas. He was a member of the Piedmont Driving Club, Capital City Club, the Nine O'Clocks of Atlanta and the Chevy Chase Club, Chevy Chase, Md. He made his home on Sea Island for 25 years, moving to Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., in 1990. Surviving are his wife, Ethel Worthington Riley, Ponte Vedra Beach; sister, Octavia Riley Birnie, Atlanta; one niece; two grand-nephews. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Christ Churchyard, St. Simons Island, with the Rev. Douglas Renegar officiating. Ola Lee JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Ola Lee, 97, Jacksonville, passed away early Friday morning at the Baptist St. Vincent's Medical Center in Jacksonville following a brief illness. She was born in Clinch County and had lived in Jacksonville for approximately 60 years. She was retired from the Florida State Board of Health. She was the last surviving child of William Jackson and Matilda Powell Lee. She was a member of Riverside Park United Methodist Church in Jacksonville. HAHIRA -- Betty Clenney Scruggs, 71, Hahira, passed away Saturday, April 15, at Smith Hospital after a lengthy illness. She was born on Sept. 14, 1928 in Edison to the late Robert Lee Sr. and Mollie Henley Clenney, and had lived in Hahira for 50 years. Mrs. Scruggs was a retired administrator with the Lowndes County Board of Education and was a member of many educational organizations. She was a charter member of the Hahira Historical Society, had served on the Hahira City Council and was the former chairperson of the Lowndes County Board of Elections. Mrs. Scruggs was a member of the Hahira First Baptist Church, the Literary Guild and the Withlacoocheee Bird Watchers. Mrs. Scruggs is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy S. and Gary Pennington, San Bernardino, Calif., and Emily S. and Mike Morgan, Apopka, Fla; one son, Herbert H. Scruggs, Jr. (Bert), Hahira; two grandchildren, Jennifer Morgan and Jeffrey Morgan; four sisters, Gussie Peak, Jimmie Wall, Dorothy Carter and Emmie Johnston; and one brother, Ben Clenney. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Harry Scruggs and two brothers, Robert Lee Clenney, Sr. and Richard Bowen Clenney. ADEL -- Ulyss Fletcher, 74, Adel, died April 20, 2000 at his residence. He was born on Nov. 19, 1925 in Cook County to the late Milton and Vera Shiflett Fletcher. VALDOSTA -- Mingo White departed this life on Sunday, April 16, 2000 at his home. Mr. White was born on Feb. 27, 1926, the fifth child of eight children, to the late Edward and Louvenia White in Valdosta. He was preceded in death by his brother, Edward White Jr., and his sister, Irene Woods. Mr. White attended the Lowndes County School System.
