MADISON, Fla. -- Mae H. Bray, 104, of Madison, Fla. died on Sunday. Oct. 8, 2000 at Madison Nursing Center after a short illness. Born on June 9, 1896 in Clyattville, she was the daughter of the late Lewis F. and Louella Covington Hunter. Mrs. Bray was owner and operator of Bray's General Store and was a member of Clyattville United Methodist Church. ADEL -- Mrs. Hazel Spires, 86, of Adel died Oct. 8, 2000 at Memorial Convalescent Center after a long illness. She was born on Jan. 4, 1914 in Floyd County to the late Thomas Houston and Etta Mae Bristol Burnette. She lived most of her life in Cook County. She was a homemaker and member of Beulah Holiness Baptist Church. She is preceded in death by her husband, George W. Spires Sr.; two daughters, Carolyn Faircloth and Thelma Morley; and a grandson, Jerry Spires. She is survived by one son, George W. Spires Jr. of Aztec, New Mexico; one daughter, Lucille Gaskins, Adel; one brother, Richard Burnette, Milledgeville; four sisters, Helen Edwards, Cummings, Beatrice Hess, Jacksonville, Fla., Evelyn C. STOCKTON -- Jim Tomlinson, 83, of Stockton passed away Sunday evening Oct. 8, 2000 in South Georgia Medical Center from a brief illness. He was born and had lived in Lanier County all his life. He served in the United States Army and was a decorated WWII veteran. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Nickey Moore. VALDOSTA -- Charles Benjamin Kelly, 45, of Valdosta, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2000. He was born on Aug. 25, 1955 in Homerville. He received his high school diploma in 1972 in San Marcos, Texas. Charles worked in the roofing business and did carpentry work for many years before becoming disabled. He returned to Valdosta after living in High Springs, Fla., for a number of years, to take care of his ill mother. KEYSTONE HEIGHTS, Fla. -- Dorothy "Dot" Wells Allen, 69, of Keystone Heights, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2000 in Gainesville, Fla., after a lengthy illness. Born in Columbus, she was the daughter of Berry Tolliver and Mary Louise Rogers Wells. She was a homemaker, a member of the Lake Region Kiwanis Club, a member of the Women's Club of Keystone Heights and a member of the Keystone Heights Methodist Church. Eva Tillman Carruthers
VALDOSTA -- Eva Tillman Carruthers, died on Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000 at her home in Valdosta. Born in Pearson, she was the daughter of the late Zebulon Cephus Tillman and Emily Tanner Tillman. She was preceded in death by her husband, O.C. Carruthers. Mrs. Carruthers received her bachelor's degree in education from Georgia State Woman's College, now Valdosta State University in 1931, and received her master's degree in administration from The University of Georgia. Mrs. Carruthers taught in the Valdosta School System for 28 years, retiring as principal of Leila Ellis Elementary School and was also employed with the Valdosta City Schools Superintendent's Office for 10 years. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma International Educators Society and the Retired Teachers Association. Active in the community, she was a member of the Wymodausis Club and the First United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School in the elementary and junior departments, was secretary for the Sunday School for 15 years, served on the Administrative Board and the Clothes Closet, and was a member of the United Methodist Women and New Covenant Sunday School Class. Mrs. Carruthers was the last surviving sibling of her 12 brothers and sisters. She is survived by 36 nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Dr. Wayne Moseley, the Rev. John McGowan and Mr. Emmett Pipkin are to officiate. Barbara Josephine Smith King
VALDOSTA -- Mrs. Barbara Josephine Smith King was born on Sept. 13, 1905, in Valdosta to Mr. Dan Smith and Mrs. Josephine Lock Smith. Her father was a railroad engineer and her mother a homemaker. Her father's work carried the family to Jacksonville, Fla. It was in Jacksonville that Mrs. King received her early elementary education at Boyland Home School. She completed her high school work at Spelman Seminary in Atlanta; Mrs. King attended college at Spelman College, receiving a bachelor's of arts degree from Spelman in 1929, with a major in English. She later studied library science at Atlanta University and took courses at Florida A&M University and Tennessee State University. Mrs. King was an English/Mathematics teacher and librarian at Dasher High School, Pinevale High Schools for a period of 42 years. In June 1963, Mrs. King traveled to Lagos Nigeria to visit her son, who was teaching there at the Federal Advanced Teachers College. She saw much of the country while there and visited London and Rome in route to Lagos. In July 1935, she was united in holy matrimony to David A. King who brought three children into the marriage. Mrs. King was a member of St. Paul AME Church, The Retired Teachers Association of Saint Paul AME Church, Georgia Retired Teachers Association, The B.S. Hannah Missionary Circle, The Jolly Twelve Club and the Jovalistic Club. Immediate survivors are a son, Dr. Calvin E. King of Nashville, Tenn.; two daughters, Mrs. Louise K. Carter of Douglasville and Mrs. Gwendolyn K. Butler (John) of Americus. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the St. Paul AME Church and the Rev. She was employed by the Cook County Board of Education as a counselor for Cook Elementary School, past president of Town and Country Garden Club of Moultrie, former teacher and guidance counselor for the Colquitt County School System, member of the Page-Counselor Association and was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Wood of Clyattville; one daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Otis Tindall; two sons and daughter-in-law, Marc and Angie Wood, and Micah Wood, all of Clyattville; six grandchildren, Jessi, Tana, Justin, Tyler, Jessica, and Stephanie; one sister and brother-in-law, Thelma and Pete Scaduto of Summerfield, Fla.; mother and father-in-law, Claude and Catherine Kent of Valdosta; one brother-in-law, Bill Kent of Clyattville; one sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Becky and Taylor Childre of Sylvester; special nieces and nephews, Gail Hunt, Wanda and Gary Wetherington, Larry and Judy Connell, Gwen and Jimmy Skrine, Chad and Kristi Folsom, Kellen Kent, Kevin and Cynthia Weldon, and Angie Weldon; and devoted friends, Larue and Edna Bryan. He was preceded in death by one brother, Joe Wayne Wood, and a nephew, Kenny Connell. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Benevolence Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held this evening from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home. Jimmy Rogers, 67, of Jennings, Fla. died Oct. 29, 2000 at the V.A. Hospital, Lake City, Fla. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Weeks Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. WHIGHAM -- Sara Frances Starling, 67, of Whigham, died Saturday, Oct. 28, 2000 in Whigham. She was born in Lowndes County and lived in Whigham for four years. She had lived in Panama City for six years. Prior to that, she lived 20 years in Tallahassee and was a vice president of the Tallahassee State Bank, member of the Gateway Baptist Church. QUITMAN -- Charlie Ausbin Wiggins Jr., 91, of Quitman, died Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2000 at South Georgia Medical Center after a lengthy illness. Born in Crawford County, he was the son of Charlie Ausbin Sr. and Mamie Lindsey Wiggins. He was a self-employed logger and had been a resident of Brooks County since 1935, moving here from Crawford County. He was a member of the Baptist Faith. He is survived by two sons, Charles O. (Susan) Wiggins of Arlington, Texas, Franklin D. (Jane) Wiggins of Quitman; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren; one sister; Irene Corbin of Jacksonville, Fla.; and one brother, Dorsey Wiggins of Bartow, Fla. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3 in Oak Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Franklin Cason officiating.
