A native of Sikesville, NJ, he was a son of the late Henry and Regina Olive Smires Wildonger and the widower of Elsie Jane Alexander Wildonger. He was retired from the United States Navy and have lived in this area since 1987. He was employed with Carrier Transicold in Athens. Funeral services will be Thursday, May 17, 2001 at 4:00 PM at Lord and Stephens Chapel, EAST with Rev. Buford Lockman officiating. Survivors include a daughter, Melissa Wildonger of Lexington; Son, Henry Wildonger, Jr. of Commerce, and 3 grandchildren. James Walter Williams, 51, of 1569 Hargrove Lake Road, Winterville, died May 4, 2001. A native of Clarke County, he was a son of Helen W. Williams of Winterville and the late Walter Williams. He was a U.S. Army veteran, owner of Winterville Automotive and a member of Winterville United Methodist Church. John W. Winge, 84, of 502 University Circle, died May 4, 2001. A native of Toombs County, he was a son of the late Preston D. and Maude Spell Winge. He was a 1938 graduate of the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and was retired from Sears as Senior Buyer with 35 years service. Mr. Winge was a member of various civic clubs, was the first President for Georgia FFA, Vice President for National FFA and Georgia State AARP Tax Commissioner for a number of years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served 6 years active duty and 28 years active reserve, attaining the rank of Lt. Colonel. Mr. Winge was an active member of Green Acres Baptist Church. Funeral services will be Monday, May 7, 2001 at 11:00 AM at Green Acres Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Babin officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Hazel W. Winge; 2 sons, David M. Winge of Athens and Charles T. Harvey Lee Ward Jr., 70, died March 23, 2001. A native of Madison County, he was a son of the late Harvey Lee Ward Sr. and Julia Mae Sorrow Ward. Mr. Ward had been involved with Little League Baseball, American Legion Baseball and Semi Pro Baseball. He was a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran and was retired from Independent Life Insurance Company. He was a member of Hull Baptist Church. Funeral services will be Monday, March 26, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. at Hull Baptist Church with Rev. Randy Crowe officiating. Katharine Rose Sudekum, 49, died May 27, 2001, in Athens, GA A native of Plainfield, NJ, and longtime resident of Bloomsbury, NJ, she was a daughter of Lothar and Violet Sudekum, presently of Grand Rapids, MI. Katharine was a 1974 graduate of Lycoming College in Williamsport, PA, with a degree in Music, and a 1985 graduate of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ, with a Master's degree in Library Science. During her career, she worked for several library automation companies and retired from Follett Software Company in February, 2001. Katharine was a hot air balloon pilot and an ailurophile. She was an exceptional friend whose friendships spanned the nation. Memorial services will be held at a later date at the family farm in Bloomsbury, NJ. Survivors in addition to her parents, include her sister, Dr. Margaret Sudekum of Ada, MI; a host of friends who were with her in her final days: Kyle Davis, Tim Strand, Eric Schoneberger, Pat McLeod, Nancy Drury, Jim Linkin, Cynthia Call, Vanna Campbell, Sharon Shotwell and Dr. Monica Kucher; and her beloved animal family: Mingus, Shmedley and Sweetie Pie. Margaret Stokely

Margaret Northington Stokely, 79, died May 13, 2001. Born in Tennille, GA, she was a graduate of Tennille High School and received her undergraduate degree in Nutrition from the University of Georgia and her graduate degrees in Nutrition and Education from Columbia University in New York. During WWII, she served in the US Army in the European Theater of Operations as a dietician in hospitals in Rheims and Marseilles, France. Following her marriage to Meral F. Stokely in 1949, she lived in the Washington D.C. area, where she taught in the Montgomery County, Maryland schools and worked as a nutritionist for the D.C. Dept of Human Resources. After retirement in 1977, the couple moved to Stone Mountain, GA where they lived until his death in 1999. They were members of the First Baptist Church of Decatur. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and William W. Zamula of Potomac, MD and their children, Margaret Ann and William Stokely Zamula; her son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Ellen Stokely of Marietta, GA and their children, Richard Charles and James Roberts Stokely; her brother, Robert P. Northington of Tennille, GA; her sister, Jane Franklin of Atlanta, GA; and several belooved nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Thursday, May 17, at 1:30PM at Lord and Stephens Funeral Home in Crawford, GA. The graveside service will follow at 3:00 at Crawford Cemetery. A native and lifelong resident of Oconee County, she was a daughter of the late Newell and Chessie Dellinger Barnett. Mrs. Parsons was a retired clerk with the U.S. Post Office, having worked in Athens and Bishop. She served as Bishop City Clerk and was in charge of voter registration as a poll worker for a number of years. Mrs. Parsons was well known for her doll collection. She was a member of Prime Timers at Watkinsville First Baptist Church and a member of Briarwood Baptist Church. Ellis "Billie" Garrett, 84, of 220 Devonshire Drive, died May 13, 2001. A native of Charing, GA, he was a son of the late Robert Lester and Janie Terry Garrett. He was a 1934 graduate of Butler High School and a 1938 graduate of the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture. He was manager of Athens Co-op Creamery from 1944-1953 and organized the Southeastern Co-operative Association. Mr. Garrett taught school in Oconee County for 7 years and was a member of Oconee County Teachers Association. Mr. Garrett was founder of The Ellis Corporation and was a long-time businessman in the Athens area. He was a charter member of Classic City Lions Club, where he served as President in 1977-78, and received the Distinguished Service Award in 1986-87. He was recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award for humanitarian service from Lions Club International Foundation. He was a member of various civic and community organizations, including Mt. Vernon Lodge, UGA Agriculture Alumni Association, Lifetime member of FFA, Sons of the American Revolution and Sons of Confederate Veterans. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Athens and the Forum Sunday School Class where he was past president. Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at 11:00 AM at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Bill Britt and Rev. Grady Wigley officiating. Elizabeth E. McCormick, 93, died May 13, 2001. A native of Odum, GA, and longtime resident of Orlando, FL, she was a daughter of the late C.L. and Mollie Hiers Whitehead, widow of Theron Cecil McCormick and preceded in death by 2 daughters, Ouida Taylor and Wanda Couch. She was a member of Church of Christ. Funeral services will be Tuesday, May 15, 2001 at 2:00 PM at Lord & Stephens Chapel, WEST with Revs. Charles Jones and Chuck Smith officiating. Interment will be Thursday, May 17, 2001 at 12:00 Noon in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Orlando, FL. Survivors include 2 daughters and sons in law, Doris and Dick Christy of Orlando, FL and Gene and Pete Crowe of Bogart, GA; Sisters, Nell Hagen and Rubye Diaz of Waycross, GA and Jewel Colgan of Jacksonville, FL; Brothers, Burrell Whitehead and C.L. Odgen of Waycross; 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Syble J. Stone Crowe
1909 - 2001
Syble J. Stone Crowe, 92, died April 22, 2001. A native of Jackson County, she was a daughter of the late Ellison Alexander and Eva Blanche Dailey Stone. She had lived most of her life in Athens, where she was a registered nurse, active for 30 years, before she and her husband opened Babytown in Athens. She retired in 1972 and lived with her husband at Thompson's Farm, Athens before moving to Northminster Presbyterian Retirement Village, Jefferson and then to Family Life Enrichment Center, High Shoals. She was a member of Central Presbyterian Church and a charter member of Sunset Garden Club. Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 25, 2001 at 11:00 AM at Lord and Stephens Chapel, WEST with Dr. Edward Bolen officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park. Survivors include her husband, Carlton "Ted" Crowe; Daughter and son in law, Dottie and Dan Hudson of Westcliffe, CO; Son and daughter in law, Ted and Charlotte Crowe of Athens; 5 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 4 step great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. James Obie Coile

James Obie Coile, 88, of 342 E. Whitehall Road died Thursday, March 22, 2001. A native of Oglethorpe County, Mr. Coile was a son of the late Willie and Huldie Strickland Coile. He was a member and former deacon of Whitehall Baptist Church and had worked for Chicopee Mills and Airport Limousine Service. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Whitehall Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Buford Lockman officiating. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Sallie Mae Coile; a son, Lonnie Donald Coile, Athens; a sister, Lillian Toney, Athens; a brother, Albert Coile, Winterville; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, East.

James Lee Chandler
1928 - 2001
James Lee Chandler, 73, of 228 Lombardy Circle, died May 24, 2001. A native of Clarke County, he was a son of the late Crawford Lee and Rosa Young Chandler. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving in World War II. He was owner and operator of Chandler's Bar-B-Que, and Chandler's Rental Units. Graveside services will be held Sunday, May 27, 2001, at 2:00 PM at Evergreen Memorial Park. Survivors include his wife, Betty McRorie Chandler; two sons, James Lee Chandler, Jr., of Daytona Beach, FL, and John Crawford Chandler of Oviede, FL; stepson, Richard McRorie of Athens; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. Alton Chandler

Alton Chandler, 69, of Arnoldsville, died May 11, 2001. A resident of Arnoldsville for seven years, he was a son of the late Harry and Grace Epperson Chandler and was preceded in death by a son, Scott Chandler. He was retired from the U.S. Army after twenty eight years of service. Graveside services will be Sunday, May 13, at 2:00 P.M. at Chandler Cemetery, Commerce with Rev. Lem Clark officiating. Survivors include a son, Brian Chandler, of Buda, TX; Brother and Sister-in-law, Jimmy and Jackie Chandler of Pooler, GA; Sister and Brother-in-law, Jane and Doyle Ash of Arnoldsville and two grandchildren. James Burroughs

James W. Burroughs, 78, formerly of the Neese Community, died May 3, 2001. A native and longtime resident of Madison County, he was a son of the late D.I. and Pinkie C. Martin Burroughs. He was a retired farmer, a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charlie Burroughs, 2 sisters, Lilliam Waller and Addie Ruth Burroughs and a granddaughter, Laura Bridges. Funeral services will be May 5, 2001 at 3:00 PM at Lord and Stephens Madison Chapel with Rev. Ray Jenkins officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Survivors include a daughter and son in law, Jane B. and Clifford Bridges of Hull; 2 grandchildren, Amy Stephenson of Commerce and Amanda Bridges of Athens and 2 great-grandchildren.

Ruby Barber

Ruby Barber, 81, died May 4, 2001.
A native of Oglethorpe County, she was a daughter of the late Gus and Arzinne Carter Barber. She was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church. Funeral services will be Sunday, May 6, 2001 at 2:00 PM at Lord and Stephens Chapel, EAST with Rev. William Anglin officiating. Interment will be in Winterville Cemetery. Survivors include a nephew, Thomas Barber of Watkinsville and several great nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 7:00 until 9:00 PM.

William L. Amason
1911 - 2001
William L. Amason, 90, of Magnolia Estates died Monday, April 9, 2001. A longtime resident of Clarke County, Mr. Amason was a son of the late Grover Cleveland and Dora Wynn Lumpkin Amason and was the widower of Annie Lou Glenn Amason. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a member of West End Baptist Church. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, East, with the Revs. Larry Elliott and John Ingham officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park. Survivors include a sister, Nellie A. Chaddick, Athens; nieces and nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Whitworth Sunday School class of West End Baptist Church and Harris Parham.
