Mack A. Donahoo, 58, died April 14, 2002.
A native of Lincoln, AL, he was the son of Lucille Donahoo of Commerce and the late Mack E. Donahoo. Mr. Donahoo was a U.S. Army veteran, an ordained deacon and Mason. A 29 year resident of Athens, he was retired from the University of Georgia. He was a member of Prince Avenue Baptist Church and a volunteer with WMSL Radio.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, April 16, 2002 at 1:00 PM at Prince Avenue Baptist Church with Revs. Bill Ricketts and John Verschuren officiating. Interment will be in Jackson Memorial Gardens.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Breathe Club.
Survivors in addition to his mother, include his wife, Jenny Donahoo; daughter, Jennifer Donahoo-Dobbins of Athens; son and daughter-in-law, Mack E. and Amye Donahoo of Watkinsville; sister, Dianna Savage of Commerce; 2 grandchildren, Christian Dobbins and Jackson Donahoo; several nieces and nephews and extended family, Eric and Penny Kirkland, Andrew, Alex and Kristen of Richmond, VA.

Amanda Lynn Edwards, 11, died November 4, 2002.
She was a daughter of David and Glenda Edwards of Hull and was a 6th grade student at Danielsville Middle School. Mandy was a member of New Covenant Worship Center where she was an active leader.

Kenneth "Ken" L. Fleming, 58, of 101 Woodlake Drive, #401, died January 27, 2002.
A native of Madison County, he was a son of Cecil S. Fleming of Comer and the late Austin L. Fleming. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in Vietnam and was retired from Georgia Power Company. He and his wife Tina, are owners of Pittypat Junction.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, January 29, 2002 at Lord and Stephens Chapel, WEST with Dr. Jon Appleton officiating. Interment will be in Athens Memory Gardens.

Judy Flynn, 70, of 1075 Friendship Circle, died February 18, 2002.
A native and longtime resident of Moultrie, GA, she was a former member of Trinity Baptist Church. Mrs. Flynn was the daughter of the late Sarah Benton and Charles Henderson Powell, Sr., and the widow of Dr. James T. Flynn, Jr. She attended Sullins College, Bristol, VA and the University of Georgia, where she was a member of Phi Mu Sorority. Mrs. Flynn was a member of the National Society of The Colonial Dames of America. She was a resident of Athens for the last five years and was a member of Milledge Avenue Baptist Church.
Memorial services will be held Thursday, February 21, 2002, at 10:00 AM at Milledge Avenue Baptist Church. Dr. Edward Bolen will officiate. Graveside services will be Friday, February 22, 2002, at 11:00 AM at Westview Cemetery, Moultrie, GA.
Survivors include two daughters, Julia Keen Steele and Lucy S. Bell, both of Athens; son, Shelley Steele of Bogart; brother, Charles Henderson Powell, Jr. of Birmingham, AL; five grandchildren, two nieces and one nephew.

James Crawford Gabriel, 79, of 130 Hargrove Lake Road, died March 14, 2002.
A native of Oglethorpe County, he was a son of the late Raleigh and Nellie Tucker Gabriel and the widower of Lois Williams Gabriel. He was retired from Reliance Electric and was a farmer. Mr. Gabriel was a WW II veteran, having served as a Rifleman in the 35th Division, in France, Holland and Germany. He was a member of Crawford Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be Saturday, March 16, 2002 at 2:00 PM at Crawford Baptist Church with Revs. David Shiver and Dayton Logan officiating. Interment will be in Athens Memory Gardens.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

A native of Philippine Islands, she was a daughter of the late Albert Tansley Luck and Mercedes Salazar.
A resident of this area since 1976, she was a charter member of the Athens Lioness Club, among the first female members of Athens Lions Club and a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

Douglas David Hammond, 43, passed away on Sunday, June 16, 2002 following a nine month battle with a brain tumor.
A native of Oconee County, Mr. Hammond was a son of the Rev. Douglas and Mrs. Jewell Hammond of Watkinsville. He was a Master Carpenter by trade.

William Travis Hooper, 31, of 564 Hardman-Hooper Road, died January 15, 2002.
A lifelong resident of Madison County, he was a son of William Larry Hooper of Danielsville, and the late LaCena Hawkes Hooper. He was a 1988 graduate of Madison County High School and a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. He was co-owner of G & H Grading and Hauling, Inc. and was "active in helping neighbors and friends in need."

Tony Roy Houser, 38, died April 12, 2002.
A lifelong resident of Oglethorpe County, he was a son of Frances Houser of Arnoldsville and the late David Percy Houser. He was plant manager for Charter Communications where he had been employed for 21 years.

Vernon Hunnicutt
1904 - 2002
Vernon Watson Hunnicutt, 97, died January 17, 2002 at his home in Comer, GA.
Born on a farm near Seneca, SC, 13 March, 1904, he was the son of Oscar A. and Beatrice F. Hunnicutt. At age 18 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and completed training at Great Lakes Naval Station. He served 6 months at which time he was voluntarily and honorably discharged due to a reduction in force following WW I. Shortly thereafter, he accepted employment with the American Telephone and Telegraph Co. He remained with AT&T for 42 years holding positions of lineman, cable splicer, field supervisor and with the home office in Atlanta, where he was equipment manager. Following retirement, he and his wife Mildred moved to the Comer area. Mildred, daughter of the late Bill and Mattie Caldwell, died in 1985. They had no children.
Vernon, a Scottish Rite Mason and Shriner was a member of the Shannon Masonic Lodge and the Valley of Atlanta Lodge. He was also a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
Funeral services will be Saturday, January 19, 2002 at 11:00 AM at Lord and Stephens Chapel, Danielsville with Cecil Hunnicutt and Rev. Scott Brown officiating. Interment will be in Meadow Baptist Church Cemetery.

Margaret Shippen Kleiner-Berryhill, 40, known as "Greta" to family and friends throughout her life, died February 24, 2002.
A native of Chicago, IL, she was a daughter of Scott Alter and Heather Smith Kleiner of Watkinsville. After attending Agnes Scott College for a year, she earned a diploma of Graphic Design from the Portfolio Center of Atlanta. She graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts and began a career in Space Planning and Interior Design. She designed for several national firms, including Kuppenheimer's, Atlanta, and Federated Department Stores, Cincinnati. A talented musician, Mrs. Kleiner-Berryhill sang with several bands in the Athens area in the 1980s, including Deep Step, Street Dancers and Beaulah Rose.
Memorial services will be Sunday, March 3, 2002 at 6:00 PM at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Athens, 780 Timothy Road, with The Rev. Terre Balof officiating. A reception will be held following the service. Interment will be scheduled later in the spring at the Indian Hill Church Cemetery, Cincinnati, OH.

Donald Lang

Donald Headdon Lang, 75, died April 23, 2002.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Frederick Joseph and Grace Collard Lang.
A 1949 graduate of Lehigh University and member of Sigma Chi, he was president of the family business, Lang Lumber, Inc for many years. He served as Sr. Vice President and Financial Consultant with Merrill Lynch in Vero Beach, FL from 1978 until 1995. A U.S. Navy veteran, Mr. Lang served in the Pacific Theatre, including Okinawa and Hiroshima during the final years of WW II. Mr. Lang was active in Learning in Retirement and had a lifelong interest in trains and boating. He was a collector of European model trains and was an avid traveler and artist.
Memorial services will be Saturday, May 4, 2002 at 2:00 PM at Lord and Stephens Chapel, EAST.

John Dewey Lance, 74, died September 1, 2002.
Born October 12, 1927, he was the husband of Hilda Logan Lance and son of the late Effie Lowe Lance and Everett R. Lance. A graduate of Bogart High School, he attended the University of Georgia. Mr. Lance was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and was a retired Sergeant First Class with the U.S. Army Reserve. He was retired Postmaster from Bogart and Maintenance Supervisor at the YWCO. Mr. Lance was a member of Athens Lions Club, Woodmen of the World and Mars Hill Baptist Church.
A celebration of Dewey s life will be Friday, September 6, 2002 at 3:00 PM at Lord and Stephens Chapel, WEST with Rev. Dan Fuller officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Doug Keen (Post Office), Greg Healan (Mars Hill Baptist Church), Jim Lance (Nephew), Jerry Toole (Friend), Steve Helwig (Athens Lions Club) and Dave Hudgins (YWCO).
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Golden Boys Sunday School Class of Mars Hill Baptist Church, Athens Lions Club and Bogart High School Class of 1945.
Survivors in addition to his wife, include his brother, James M. Lance (Wife Delores Norris Lance) of Athens; Nephew, Dr. James M. Lance, Jr. (Wife Marisol Sanchez Lance) of Birmingham, AL; Great Nephew, Jake Lance and l great Niece, Kate Lance; 3 children, David Lance (Wife Teresa Cowan Lance) of Franklin, TN, Deborah Olson (Husband Dan Olson) of Fredericksburg, VA and Tim Lance (Wife Melissa Stanford Lance) of Antioch, TN; 4 grandchildren, Ashley Lance, Ansley Lance, Joshua Olson and Leah Olson; 6 grand pets, Toto, Buddy, Lucy, Tobie, Puff Ball and Little Kittie;
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 7:00 until 9:00 PM.

Cynthia Lawrence
Cynthia Agnes Stewart Lawrence passed away Tuesday, March 04, 2003, at Charlotte, NC. She was born at Fort Bragg, NC on May 2, 1948. She grew up in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and made moves with her U.S. Army family to Germany, Ft. Benning, Georgia, Atlanta, Georgia, and Jacksonville, Florida. She was valedictorian of her graduating class at Ribault Senior High in Jacksonville, Florida. She attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and graduated from Georgia State University.
She became a Certified Public Accountant and controller for Byers Engineering in Atlanta. She loved animals, music and reading. She was a fragile and gentle soul, smart and funny, and will be missed by her family and friends.
Cynthia is survived by her mother, Ruby Spratlin Stewart, her sister, Janice Marilyn Stewart, her brother, William Jerry Stewart and his wife, Paige Murray Stewart, all of Charlotte.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 8 at 11:00 AM at Hull Baptist Church in Hull, GA with burial in the church cemetery immediately following the service.

Marcia Griffith Long
Marcia Griffith Long, 93, died March 24, 2002.
A native of Taliaferro County, she was a daughter of the late William Hill and Mary Lou Nash Sherrer. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Samuel Clarence Griffith, Sr., second husband, Phillip Long, Son, Samuel Clarence Griffith, Jr. and Grandson, Joseph Hill Griffith.
A longtime resident of Athens, Mrs. Long owned and operated Griffith's Boarding House for a number of years and was a member of Prince Avenue Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at 11:00 AM at Lord and Stephens Chapel, EAST. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park.
Survivors include a niece, Pricilla Maxwell of Washington, GA; Nephew, Charles Sherrer of Loganville; 2 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild and several other nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 9:30 until 11:00 AM.

Ruth Lord
Ruth Patat Lord, 76, died September 26, 2002.
A native of Fulton County and longtime resident of Oconee County, she was a daughter of the late Fred and Irene Wall Patat and widow of Robert E. Lord. She was retired from H & H Manufacturing. Mrs. Lord was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels and a member of Bogart United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be Sunday, September 29, 2002 at 4:00 PM at Bogart United Methodist Church with Revs. Albert Askew and Ross Johns officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Jason Baker, Jeff Baker, Anthony Burbage, Tommy Morrow, Stanley Baker and Paul Baker, Jr.
Survivors include a daughter and son in law, Robin and Dan Ayers of Daytona Beach, FL; 2 sisters, Mary Montgomery of Greenville, SC and Ann Cooper of Neese Community; 2 brothers, Buck Patat of Snellville and Gene Patat of Gratis; granddaughter, Jackie Burbage; 5 grandsons, Jason Baker, Jeff Baker, Clay Ayers, Matthew Ayers and Justin Ayers; 4 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 7:00 until 9:00 PM

Richard Mattocks
1930 - 2002
Richard A. Mattocks, of Athens, died July 30, 2002.
A native of Ellwood City, PA, he was a son of the late William M. and Elizabeth Stahl Mattocks. A graduate of Westminster College-New Wilmington, PA, Mr. Mattocks served in the United States Air Force from 1953 until 1957. He was sales manager of Clarke Broadcasting Corporation and retired after 27 years. Mr. Mattocks was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Athens, and was preceded in death by his brother, Grant J. Mattocks.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 1, 2002, at 2:00 PM at the chapel of Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, WEST. Dr. Joseph Berry will officiate. Interment will be in Barrow Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Ann Freeman Mattocks; daughters and sons in law, Elaine and Guy Reid of Augusta and Sandy and Michael Phillips of Grayson; grandsons, William Mattocks Reid, Alex Phillips, and Ben Phillips; sister in law, Jayne Mattocks of Atlanta; nephews, Tom Mattocks and James Mattocks; niece, Cathy Mattocks, all of Atlanta.
Memorials may be made to the organ fund of First Presbyterian Church of Athens.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7:00 until 9:00 PM at the funeral home.
