Andrew Jackson "Jack" Magnus, 78, died September 23, 2002.
A native of Oconee County, he was a son of the late Samuel and Tiny Flora Pinion Magness. He was employed for a number of years with Chicopee Mills and Certainteed and retired from Noramco. Mr. Magnus was a member of Sonlight Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be Thursday, September 26, 2002 at 2:00 PM at Lord and Stephens Chapel, EAST with Revs. Elmer Butler and Dan Corbett officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park.
Survivors include his wife, Trilla Mae Magnus; 2 daughters, Rita Davidson of Colbert and Sheila Harlow of Snellville; 2 sons, Mark Magnus of Winterville and Kenneth Magnus of Maxeys; 2 sisters, Frances Hammond of Winder and Dot Holloway of Winterville; 8 grandchildren, 4 step great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Mary Lee Bell McElhannon, 84, died March 14, 2002.
A native and lifelong resident of Oglethorpe County, she was a daughter of the late Willie J. and Emma Lester Bell and widow of I.W. McElhannon. She was retired from the University of Georgia and was a 35 year member of Northside Baptist Church where she was selected as Mother of the Year, Mother's Day, 2000.
Funeral services will be Sunday, March 17, 2002 at 3:00 PM at Lord & Stephens Chapel, EAST with Rev. John Parker officiating. Interment will be in Athens Memory Gardens.

Conley Michael McDaris, 20, died April 19, 2002. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Charles C. McDaris of Hull.
Mr. McDaris was a painter apprentice and attended Edwards Baptist Church.

James Allen McDaris, 77, died July 17, 2002.
A native of Oconee County, he was a son of the late John and Julia Huggins McDaris. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WW II, where he served from England to the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. McDaris was a retired truck driver.

Thomas C. McGahee

Thomas C. McGahee, 78, of 1210 Cherokee Circle, died October 17, 2002.
A lifelong resident of Athens, he was the son of the late Mack and Miriam Tribble McGahee. He was a member of the 1942 Athens High State Championship football team and attended the University of Georgia. He graduated from the Federal Bureau of Investigation Academy in Washington D.C. He retired as Athens Chief of Police and was a member of the Peace Officers Association. Mr. McGahee was a Mason with the Athens Lodge and was a WWII veteran of the United States Army Air Corp.
He was a member of Friendship Presbyterian Church.
Funeral services will be Sunday, October 20, 2002, at 2:00 PM at the chapel of Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, WEST. Rev. Joe Reggin will officiate. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Athens-Clarke County Police Department.

Victor Hugo Miller, 84, died August 18, 2002.
A native of McKeesport, PA, he was a son of the late Carl and May Hugo Miller. He has lived in Athens since 1974, where he retired as plant engineer from Westinghouse in 1982 after 45 years of service. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and former choir member.
Funeral mass will be Wednesday, August 21, 2002 at 11:00 AM at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with Father Randy Mattox officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park.

Bennie W. Moats, 73, died July 30, 2002.
A native of Warren County, GA, he was a son of the late Herman Freeman Moats and Reba Humphrey Moats Lester and widower of Billie Bradley Moats. Mr. Moats worked for Georgia Railroad for a number of years and was retired Secretary-Treasurer of Bradley Provision with 35 years of service. He was a charter member of Winterville Lions Club and member of Winterville United Methodist Church.

A native of Madison County, she was a daughter of the late James T. and Leola Robena Sailors Smith and the widow of James Grady Patterson. 4 Sisters, Clara Hardman, Mamie Hardman, Pauline Black and Rose Lane and 2 brothers, Ernest Smith and Hoyt Smith, preceded Mrs. Patterson in death. She made her home in Jacksonville, FL for 32 years, having returned to Madison County in 1976. Mrs. Patterson was a member of West End Baptist Church.

William Daniel Porterfield, 81, died August 26, 2002.
A native and lifelong resident of Comer, he was the son of the late Daniel W. and Willie Cox Porterfield and widower of Jane Askin Porterfield. Mr. Porterfield was retired Postmaster and rural mail carrier with the United States Postal Service in Comer. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of WW II and was a recipient of the Purple Heart, Silver Star and Air Force Medal. He was a member of the Merchant and Farmer's Coffee Club, the Has Been's and the Athens Touchdown Club. He was a member of the Comer United Methodist Church and the church choir.

John Radford, 50, died Saturday, July 19, 2002.
A native of Richmond County, GA, Mr. Radford was a son of Faye and George Kitchens of Harlem and the late Raymond Radford. John was a member of Green Acres Baptist Church and was a longtime employee of Bi-Lo.

Enoch James Reynolds, 83, of 123 Lexington-Carlton Road, Lexington, died January 9, 2002.
A native of Stephens County, he was a son of the late James Daniel and Sarah Donie Pruitt Reynolds. A resident of Oglethorpe County for 70 years, he was retired from Johnson and Johnson after 28 years of service. Mr. Reynolds was a U.S. Army veteran of WW II having served during the Pacific Conflict and being discharged as Corporal. He was a member of Sons of Confederate Veterans and Crawford Pentecostal Church.

Rebecca Markwalter Ridgway was born November 27, 1911, in Warrenton, GA. She was the daughter of William Edward and Caroline Jarnagin Markwalter. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, GA, and a Master s Degree in Library Science from the University of Georgia. She was a teacher for 30 years at Morgan County High School in Madison, GA where she was selected as Star teacher.
Mrs. Ridgway was a member of the Henry Walton Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution, serving as Registrar and Treasurer; National Society of Washington Family descendants; National Society of Colonial Dames XVII Century; Morgan County Retired Teachers Association; Delta Kappa Gamma Society and a charter member of the GOSH Club. She was a member of the First Methodist Church in Madison.

A native of Banks County, she was a daughter of the late Floyd Andrew and Pearl Sanders Parks. Her first husband, Hoyt Robertson and her second husband, J. Chalmers Vinson, preceded her in death. She was a retired secretary from The Georgia Center for Continuing Education. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Athens for sixty-five years, where she was superintendent of Primary Division and the Children s Division for a number of years.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, October 9, 2002, at 4:00 PM at First United Methodist Church of Athens. Rev. Grady Wigley and Dr. Bill Britt will officiate. Interment will be in Maysville Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Athens, he was a son of the late Joe A., Jr. and Ethel Richards Saye. A graduate of Athens High School, he was employed with Georgia Power for 18 years. He then received his Bachelors of Education and Masters of Education from the University of Georgia and began teaching and coaching at Athens and Clarke Central High Schools. He was football coach of Athens High 1969 State Championship and was retired as vice principal from Cedar Shoals High School. Mr. Saye was a Little League coach and umpire for a number of years. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa and IBEW. He served in the Athens Civil Service Commission from 1964 - 1974, representing the first ward. He was a member of Young Harris United Methodist Church and attended Oconee Street United Methodist Church.
Services were Thursday, June 5, 2002 at 11:00 AM at Lord and Stephens Chapel, EAST with Revs. Carolyn Morris and Lisa Cain officiating. Interment was in Oconee Hill Cemetery.

A lifelong resident of Clarke County, she was a daughter of the late Robert H. and Clyde Collier Benedict. She was the widow of William Robert Seagraves and preceded in death by a daughter, Hazel Cartey.

A native of Early County, GA, she was a daughter of the late Jesse George and Lizzie McGlamory Philmon and widow of Joe M. Sheffield. Mrs. Sheffield was a former resident of Mulberry and Lakeland FL and had made her home in this area since 1965. She was retired from Eckerd Drug Company in Homewood Hills Shopping Center. Mrs. Sheffield was a member of Oconee Heights Baptist Church and attended Beech Haven Baptist Church.

Malcolm Finn Steuer, 73, died Tuesday, March 5, 2002.
A native of Marion, SC, Dr. Steuer was a son of Carribel Steuer and the late Rudolph R. Steuer. He received his B.S. from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in 1950 and his Ph.D. from UVA in 1957. He was a member of the UGA Department of Physics and Astronomy from 1958 until his retirement as Emeritus Professor in 1995 and was the motivating force behind the acquisition and upgrade of the Van de Graaff particle accelerator. In later years, he helped modernize undergraduate physics instruction.
Survivors in addition to his mother, include his wife, Carolyn Steuer; 3 sons, Max Steuer, M.D., Atlanta, Eric Steuer, M.D. Ph.D., St. Paul, and Karl Steuer, Baton Rouge; sister, Carri Ender, Annapolis; 2 brothers, R.R. Ralph L. (Billy) Wehunt

Ralph L. (Billy) Wehunt, 79, died April 1, 2002 of complications of a bone marrow disease. A native of Athens-Clarke County, he was the son of the late Ralph T. and Kate L. Wehunt.
Dr. Wehunt was an agronomist and plant physiologist. He held bachelor and master degrees from University of Georgia and a doctorate from Rutgers University.
The devoted husband and father is survived by his wife, the former Bettie Ann Reeves; two sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Nancy Wehunt of Lawrenceville and Wayne and Judy Wehunt of Columbus; three sisters, Sara Tankersley of Greenville, SC, Patsy Barezewski and Barbara Ann Cassell, both of Atlanta. His sister, Mildred Seagraves, died earlier.
He was an agronomy specialist with the Extension Service of the University of Georgia and the Tennessee Valley Authority; chief agronomist of a major chemical corporation; and president of Doane Marketing Research Inc., a major agricultural research and consulting firm. Dr. Wehunt was a nationally known speaker and author of articles related to marketing and effective use of agricultural chemicals. American farmers considered him a pioneer in the adoption of modern soil fertility practices. In his retirement years, he was an avid gardener and landscape designer.
He was an active worker and officer in Civitan International. He was a devoted member of Tuckston United Methodist Church where he served as a member of various boards, Co-workers Sunday School Class teacher, officer of the Senior Citizens Club and several committees. He was a past lay speaker in the Methodist church and a member of several scientific organizations and University of Georgia clubs and organizations.
Services will be held Thursday, April 4, 2002 at 11:00 AM at Tuckston United Methodist Church with Dr. Doug Thrasher and Lee McNeil officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park.
