Grady C. Thomas
Grady Clexton Thomas, 85, of Carnesville, father of James Thomas, Danielsville, died Saturday, March 17, 2001, at Habersham County Medical Center, Demorest.
Mr. Thomas was born in Franklin County on May 10, 1915, a son of the late Claude Clexton and Lillie Mae Payne Thomas.
Retired, he was a farmer and had worked at Master Furniture Company in Toccoa for 45 years. Mr. Thomas was a member and past deacon of New Bethel Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by a son, Raymond Grady Thomas, a sister, Myrtie Lee Haynie, and six brothers, Boyd, Hoyt, Van, Lester, Homer and Gilmer Thomas.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, at New Bethel Baptist Church with the Revs. Paul Collins and Willard Crider officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
In addition to his son, Mr. Thomas is survived by his wife, Louise Barnes Thomas; sons, Mike Thomas and Roger Thomas, both of Carnesville; three daughters, Virginia Chastain, Carnesville, Carolyn Massey, Dewey Rose, and Linda Chatham, Grovetown; four sisters, Maebelle Segars, Lorene Perkins and Joan Segars, all of Lavonia, and Ozell Pritchett, Carnesville; one brother, Gomer Thomas, Carnesville; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Kayla E. Anglin
Kayla E. Anglin, infant daughter of James R. Morris Jr. and Kelly Elaine Anglin, Pickens, S.C., died Thursday, March 15, 2001.
Infant Anglin was born in Pickens County.
Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 18, in the Macedonia Holiness Church cemetery with the Rev. William Anglin officiating.
In addition to her parents, survivors include two brothers, Michael Morris and Steven Morris, both of Pickens, S.C.

Tommy J. Sims
Tommy Joe Sims, 53, of Maysville, died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital, Athens.
A native of Jackson County, Mr. Sims was born February 28, 1948. He was a son of Lucille McGinnis Sims, Maysville, and the late Billy Joe Sims.
Mr. Sims was a retired sheet metal worker and was a member of Maysville Baptist Church.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 16, in Sunrise Cemetery, Maysville, with the Revs. Brian Stowe, Larry Joe Wilbanks and Jordan Weldon officiating.
In addition to his mother, Mr. Sims is survived by his wife, Benita Carroll Sims, Maysville; two sons, Jacob Sims and Jason Sims, both of Maysville; one daughter, Joy Hardy, Commerce; one sister, Terry Wilbanks, Harriman, Tenn.; and one granddaughter.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Mildred C. Okelley
Mrs. Mildred Carolyn Okelley, 75, of Nicholson, died Friday, March 16, 2001, at BJC Nursing Home, Commerce.
Mrs. Okelley was born February 5, 1926, in Commerce, a daughter of the late Dave and Lollie Lyles Duke.
She was a housewife and was of the Methodist faith.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 20, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Henry Webb officiating. Burial was in the Antioch Methodist Church cemetery.
Mrs. Okelley is survived by her husband, Henry Bill Okelley, Nicholson; one son, Mike Okelley, Marietta; one daughter, Anita Palmer, Covington; one brother, Jack Duke, Jefferson; two sisters, Louise Duke, Jefferson, and Jane Segars, Arcade; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Doris B. Chambers
Mrs. Doris Bennett Chambers, 57, of Maysville, died Monday, March 19, 2001.
Mrs. Chambers was born July 5, 1943, in Jackson County. She was a daughter of the late Bush and Maebell Harper Bennett.
Mrs. Chambers had been employed with Barrow Manufacturing Company and was of the Baptist denomination. She was preceded in death by her husband, H.C. Chambers.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, at Riverside Baptist Church with the Revs. Bill Manus and Charles Morrison officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include one son, David Chambers, Maysville; two daughters, Teresa Queen, Homer, and Susan Rylee, Gillsville; and four grandchildren, Brittany Queen and Chris Queen, both of Homer, and Blake Rylee and Kevin Rylee, both of Gillsville.

Clara E. Benton
Mrs. Clara "Granny" Eubanks Benton, of Moultrie, formerly of Commerce, died Monday, March 19, 2001, in Moultrie following an extended illness.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, at the First Baptist Church of Commerce with the Revs. Don Paulson and Kent Cranford officiating. Burial was in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, the Rev. Roger and Faye Benton, Moultrie; sister-in-law, Hazel McElroy, Lakeland, Fla.; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Roy Cofer, Ocala, Fla.; two grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Commerce, the Commerce Public Library or to the First Baptist Church of Moultrie.

Harvey L. Ward Jr.
Harvey Lee Ward Jr., 70, of Hull, died Friday, March 23, 2001.
A native of Madison County, Mr. Ward was a son of the late Harvey Lee Ward Sr. and Julia Mae Sorrow Ward.
He had been involved with Little League Baseball, American Legion Baseball and Semi Pro Baseball. Mr. Ward was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and was retired from Independent Life Insurance Company. He was a member of Hull Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 26, at Hull Baptist Church with the Rev. Randy Crowe officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Gene Smart, Gene Martin, Nathan Hobbs, Randall Elrod, David Betts and Mike Youngblood served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Logan Sunday School Class.
Mr. Ward is survived by his wife, Jimmie L. Ward; daughter, Cheryl L. Fleming, Hull; daughter and son-in-law, Tina M. and Frankie Cleveland, Hull; son and daughter-in-law, Brad and Suzanne Ward, Athens; sister, Lula W. Oettmeier, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Dewitt D. Smallwood
Dewitt Dempsey Smallwood, 74, of Commerce, died Friday, March 23, 2001, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
Mr. Smallwood was born July 7, 1926, in Madison County, a son of the late Howell Parker and Montine Dailey Smallwood.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during World War II, and was a retired poultry farmer. Mr. Smallwood was a member of Blacks Creek Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eva Sue Ingram Smallwood.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 25, at Blacks Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Carpenter officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include two sons, Darrell Smallwood and Ronnie Smallwood, both of Commerce; one daughter, Mahalious Mitchell, Cleveland; one brother, Theron Smallwood, Commerce; a special friend, Montine Venable, Commerce; and seven grandchildren.

Jack Damron
Jack Damron, 65, of Athens, died Thursday, March 22, 2001.
Mr. Damron was born in Oglethorpe County, a son of the late Grady J. and Sally Stewart Damron.
He was an employee of Seaboard of Athens and was a member of Johnson Drive Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 24, in the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home, Athens, with the Rev. Mike Curry officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Damron's nephews served as pallbearers.
Mr. Damron is survived by his wife, Shelba Smith Damron, Athens; one daughter, Brenda Epps, Athens; one son, Gerald Damron, Nicholson; four sisters, Mary Duncan, Winder, Elizabeth Epps, Hull; Mamie Meeks, Union Point, and Essie Wilson, Lexington, S.C.; two step-sisters, Louise Bell, Royston, and Thelma Cox, Stockbridge; one step-brother, Sam Archer, Austell; and four grandchildren.

Janice E. Minish
Mrs. Janice Elaine Herbert Minish, 47, of Commerce, died Friday, March 23, 2001, at her residence.
Mrs. Minish was born April 19, 1953, in Jackson County. She was a daughter of Marguerite Herbert, Commerce, and the late David Herbert.
Mrs. Minish was a homemaker and was a member of Unity Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, John B. Minish.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 24, in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce, with Minister Molly Morris, the Rev. Phil Williams and Minister Dennis Harris officiating.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include one son, Tony Berry, Commerce; and one brother, Curtis Herbert, Commerce.

Mamie G. Benton
Mrs. Mamie Garrison Benton, 88, of Commerce, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at BJC Nursing Home, Commerce.
Mrs. Benton was born July 25, 1912, in Jackson County. She was a daughter of the late John and Lutsie Boswell Garrison.
Mrs. Benton was retired from Commerce Sportswear and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Benton.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 29, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Henry Webb officiating. Burial will be in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.
Mrs. Benton is survived by one daughter, Mamie Joe Brown, Leesburg; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.
The family was to have received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
