Banks County native
JACKSONVILLE, FLA. - Mrs. Maxine Segars Parks, 75, died Thursday, March 22, 2001, at her residence.
A native of Banks County, Mrs. Parks was born May 6, 1925, a daughter of the late Dudley Ross and Rilla Leeanna Addison Segars.
She was a 1946 graduate of Piedmont College, Demorest, and was a member of Beaverdam Baptist Church, Banks County. Mrs. Parks and her husband had been residents of Jacksonville, Fla., since 1946.
She was preceded in death by four sisters, Thelma Wood, Grace Wilkinson, Gertrelle Bramlett and Irene Bump, and four brothers, Lee Segars, Wade Segars, Boyd Segars and Young Segars.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 26, at Hebron Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Ruben Wallace officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Ned Parks; one son, Danny Parks, Jacksonville, Fla.; four daughters, Janet Harvin, Ronda Kley and Nancy Greenfield, all of Jacksonville, Fla., and Connie Brodbeck, Havana, Fla.; two brothers, Kenneth Segars, Winnsboro, S.C., and Dudley Segars, Roswell; two sisters, Reba Lewallen, Lavonia, and Geneva Allen, Demorest; and seven grandchildren.

MR. SMALLWOOD
U.S. Navy veteran
COMMERCE - Dewitt Dempsey Smallwood, 74, died Friday, March 23, 2001, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
Mr. Smallwood was born July 7, 1926, in Madison County, a son of the late Howell Parker and Montine Dailey Smallwood.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during World War II, and was a retired poultry farmer. Mr. Smallwood was a member of Blacks Creek Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eva Sue Ingram Smallwood.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 25, at Blacks Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Carpenter officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include two sons, Darrell Smallwood and Ronnie Smallwood, both of Commerce; one daughter, Mahalious Mitchell, Cleveland; one brother, Theron Smallwood, Commerce; a special friend, Montine Venable, Commerce; and seven grandchildren.

MRS. MINISH

COMMERCE - Mrs. Janice Elaine Herbert Minish, 47, died Friday, March 23, 2001, at her residence.
Mrs. Minish was born April 19, 1953, in Jackson County. She was a daughter of Marguerite Herbert, Commerce, and the late David Herbert.
Mrs. Minish was a homemaker and was a member of Unity Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, John B. Minish.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 24, in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce, with Minister Molly Morris, the Rev. Phil Williams and Minister Dennis Harris officiating.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include one son, Tony Berry, Commerce; and one brother, Curtis Herbert, Commerce.

MRS. BENTON
Calvary Baptist member
COMMERCE - Mrs. Mamie Garrison Benton, 88, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at BJC Nursing Home, Commerce.
Mrs. Benton was born July 25, 1912, in Jackson County. She was a daughter of the late John and Lutsie Boswell Garrison.
Mrs. Benton was retired from Commerce Sportswear and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Benton.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 29, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Henry Webb officiating. Burial will be in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.
Mrs. Benton is survived by one daughter, Mamie Joe Brown, Leesburg; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.
The family was to have received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

MR. SHANKLE
Former Commerce resident
MILLEDGEVILLE - Col. Willard Mayes Shankle Sr., U.S. Air Force (Retired), a former resident of Commerce, died Sunday, March 18, 2001, in an Atlanta hospital.
A native of Banks County, Col. Shankle was raised in Commerce. He attended the University of Georgia, received his bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland and graduated from the Air War College in Montgomery, Ala.
Immediately after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, he volunteered in the Army Air Corps, was commissioned and became a pilot. He volunteered for heavy bombardment and went to England with the 8th Air Force, flying a B-17.
He stayed in Europe until V.E. Day, survived an extraordinary 67 missions over Germany and was promoted to the rank of Lt. Colonel. In those two years, his major awards issued included the Air Medal and four oak leaf clusters, the Distinguished Flying Cross with two oak leaf clusters and the French Flying Cross with one bronze star.
After re-enlisting with the new and separate U.S. Air Force, he joined the burgeoning field of nuclear weapons development, where he served until his retirement from the Air Force in 1969. His career included assignments in New Mexico, Ohio and Naples, Italy.
The final 10 years of his Air Force career were spent in the Office of the Secretary of Defense at the Pentagon. For his peacetime contributions, Col. Shankle received many honors, including the Distinguished Service Medal and the Legion of Merit. He consulted with the Atomic Energy Commission for several years after his retirement.
Col. Shankle and his wife of 58 years, Virginia, resided in Milledgeville since 1969, where he enjoyed hunting, fishing, horseback riding and his grandchildren. The "Colonel" was a member of the Retired Officers Association, the Appalachian Trail Club and the First United Methodist Church.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 22, at the First United Methodist Church with Dr. Harold Lawrence officiating. Burial was in Baldwin Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Col. Shankle is survived by a son, Willard M. Shankle, a daughter, Virginia Shankle Bales, and three grandchildren, Carrie Shankle, Kelly Shankle and Chip Bales, all of Atlanta.

MR. THOMPSON
U.S. Army veteran
MAYSVILLE - Michael Thompson, 36, died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at his residence.
Mr. Thompson was born in Indiana on November 6, 1964. He was a son of Donald and Judith Thompson, Evansville, Ind.
Mr. Thompson was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Panama Chagin as a member of the Mountain Division Air Borne Ranger. He was employed as a welder and was a member of Grove Level Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 23, at Grove Level Baptist Church with the Rev. Jeff Appling officiating. Burial was in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Thompson is survived by his wife, Lana Thompson, Maysville; one son, Jermy Jarrard, Maysville; one daughter, Casey Dodd, Maysville; and two sisters, Debbie Thompson, Evansville, Ind., and Donna Thompson, Knoxville, Tenn.

MR. LONG
U.S. Navy veteran
HOSCHTON - Johnny Marcus Long, 71, died Wednesday, March 21, 2001.
Mr. Long was a U.S. Navy veteran of 21 years, a 26-year member of The American Legion Post 251, Duluth, and a member of 40 & 8 Voiture 402, Duluth, Masonic Lodge Rockwell #191 and the Moose Lodge, Winder. He was also a member and past commander of VFW Post 1187, Lawrenceville.
Mr. Long was preceded in death by his wife of 22 years, Ola Jean Long.
Funeral services were held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 24, in the chapel of R.T. Patterson Funeral Home, Norcross.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Long; one daughter, Jeannie Marie Wilkinson, Norcross; two step-daughters, Deborah Faye Myers and Rhonda Jean Goldsberry, both of Denver, Colo.; three sisters, Frances Kelleher, Flowery Branch, Patty Herring, Hartwell, and Eloise Clay, Brookhaven; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

MAYSVILLE - Mrs. Linda Sue Grizzle, 49, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce, following an extended illness.
Mrs. Grizzle was born January 22, 1952, in Cleveland, Ohio, a daughter of Frank and Eleanor McClure McConnell, Maysville.
She was a homemaker and was a member of the Commerce Church of God.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 23, at the Commerce Church of God with Pastors Gary Osteen and Melvin Kramer officiating. Burial was in the Commerce Church of God cemetery.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Grizzle is survived by her husband, Vernon Grizzle, Maysville; one son, James Lee Grizzle, Maysville; two daughters, Mary Ann Grizzle and Melissa Grizzle, both of Maysville; five sisters, Doris Ann Addison, Ella Mae Burnett and Patricia Smith, all of Gainesville, Wanda Anderson, Lula, and Evelyn Mull, North Carolina; and two brothers, Billy McConnell, Clermont, and Wayne McConnell, Gainesville.
