MR. SMALLWOOD
U.S. Navy veteran
COMMERCE - Dewitt Dempsey Smallwood, 74, died Friday, March 23, 2001, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
Mr. Smallwood was born July 7, 1926, in Madison County, a son of the late Howell Parker and Montine Dailey Smallwood.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during World War II, and was a retired poultry farmer. Mr. Smallwood was a member of Blacks Creek Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eva Sue Ingram Smallwood.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 25, at Blacks Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Carpenter officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include two sons, Darrell Smallwood and Ronnie Smallwood, both of Commerce; one daughter, Mahalious Mitchell, Cleveland; one brother, Theron Smallwood, Commerce; a special friend, Montine Venable, Commerce; and seven grandchildren.
Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, was in charge of arrangements.

MR. DAMRON
Johnson Drive

ATHENS - Jack Damron, 65, died Thursday, March 22, 2001.
Mr. Damron was born in Oglethorpe County, a son of the late Grady J. and Sally Stewart Damron.
He was an employee of Seaboard of Athens and was a member of Johnson Drive Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 24, in the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home, Athens, with the Rev. Mike Curry officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Damron's nephews served as pallbearers.
Mr. Damron is survived by his wife, Shelba Smith Damron, Athens; one daughter, Brenda Epps, Athens; one son, Gerald Damron, Nicholson; four sisters, Mary Duncan, Winder, Elizabeth Epps, Hull; Mamie Meeks, Union Point, and Essie Wilson, Lexington, S.C.; two step-sisters, Louise Bell, Royston, and Thelma Cox, Stockbridge; one step-brother, Sam Archer, Austell; and four grandchildren.
Bernstein Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MRS. JARRELLS

ATHENS - Mrs. Lottie Mae Jarrells, 61, died Sunday, March 25, 2001.
A native of Madison County, Mrs. Jarrells was a daughter of the late Albert Harper and Essie Mae Jarrells. She was the wife of the late William O. Jarrells.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 27, at Tabors Chapel C.M.E. Church, Ila, with the Rev. David Echols officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Friends of Mrs. Jarrells served as pallbearers.
Survivors include a special friend, Leon Watkins, Athens; two daughters, Shelia D. Davis and Linda J. Harper, both of the Athens; one son, Otis Jarrells, Commerce; five sisters, Sadie Wiley, Commerce, Lavonia Lowe, Anner Jarrells and Diama Jarrells, all of Athens, and Georgia Ann Sorrells, Hull; three brothers, George W. Jarrells, Athens, Lamatine Jarrells, Nicholson, and Cecil Jarrells, Commerce; six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Jackson-McWhorter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MRS. FRIDDELL
Homemaker
WINDER - Mrs. Kathryn Friddell, 96, died Thursday, March 15, 2001.
Born in Dayton, Ohio, Mrs. Friddell had resided in Barrow County for the past 28 years. She was a son of the late Joseph and Amelia Treon Line.
Mrs. Friddell was a homemaker and attended the Winder First United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul J. Friddell Sr.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 18, in the chapel of Carter Funeral Home, Winder, with the Rev. Terry Tippens officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Survivors include one daughter, Amy Keller, Winder; one son, Paul Jay Friddell Jr., Barrington, Ill.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Carter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MR. THOMPSON
U.S. Army veteran
MAYSVILLE - Michael Thompson, 36, died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at his residence.
Mr. Thompson was born in Indiana on November 6, 1964. He was a son of Donald and Judith Thompson, Evansville, Ind.
Mr. Thompson was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Panama Chagin as a member of the Mountain Division Air Borne Ranger. He was employed as a welder and was a member of Grove Level Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 23, at Grove Level Baptist Church with the Rev. Jeff Appling officiating. Burial was in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Thompson is survived by his wife, Lana Thompson, Maysville; one son, Jermy Jarrard, Maysville; one daughter, Casey Dodd, Maysville; and two sisters, Debbie Thompson, Evansville, Ind., and Donna Thompson, Knoxville, Tenn.
Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, was in charge of arrangements.

COMMERCE - Mrs. Mamie Garrison Benton, 88, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at BJC Nursing Home, Commerce.
Mrs. Benton was born July 25, 1912, in Jackson County. She was a daughter of the late John and Lutsie Boswell Garrison.
Mrs. Benton was retired from Commerce Sportswear and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Benton.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 29, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Henry Webb officiating. Burial will be in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.
Mrs. Benton is survived by one daughter, Mamie Joe Brown, Leesburg; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.
The family was to have received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

SMITH

SALEM, ARK. - Noah Harley Smith, 17 months, grandson of W.C. and Francis Smith, Commerce, died Sunday, February 25, 2001, in Little Rock, Ark.
Smith was born September 21, 1999, in Memphis, Tenn.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 31, at Immanuel Southern Baptist Church, Salem, Ark., with Brother Alan Winberry, Brother Jim Collins, Brother Gary Barker and Mike Steele officiating.
In addition to his paternal grandparents, he is survived by his parents, Bobby and Paige Steele Smith, Salem, Ark., formerly of Memphis, Tenn.; three brothers, Ellis Smith, Salem, Ark., and Evan Puckett and Paul Puckett, both of Somerville, Tenn.; maternal grandparents, Mike and Deanna Steele, Springfield, Mo., formerly of Memphis, Tenn.; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Memorials may be made to the First National Bank of Sharp County, Noah Smith Benefit Fund, P.O. Box 487, Salem, AR 72576.

MR. PERSCHKA
Retired engineer
NICHOLSON - Dale O. Perschka, 73, died Thursday, March 15, 2001.
A native of Sharpsville, Pa., Mr. Perschka was a son of the late Clarence L. and Clara Perschka.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and was retired as an engineer from Westinghouse, with 41 years of service. Mr. Perschka was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 17, in the chapel of Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, East, with Bishop Mike Schmucker officiating. A private burial was held in Athens Memory Gardens.
Mr. Perschka is survived by his wife, Doris; one daughter, Fay; two sons, Greg and Doug; three sisters, Marguerite, Helen and Betty; and five grandchildren.
Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, East, was in charge of arrangements.

MRS. SAULS
Retired seamstress
WINDER - Mrs. Mary Sue Sauls, 90, died Sunday, March 25, 2001, at her residence.
A native of Jackson County, Mrs. Sauls was a daughter of the late James L. and Narcy Turk Magness.
She was a retired seamstress with Carwood Manufacturing Co. and was a member of Union Baptist Church. Mrs. Sauls was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Sauls, and a son, Jimmy Sauls.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, in Smith's Memory Chapel of Smith Funeral Home, Winder, with the Rev. Mike Mimms officiating. Burial was in the Union Baptist Church cemetery.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Kirk Barnes and Reba and Kenny Elrod, all of Winder; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert "Bobby" and Shirley Sauls, Dahlonega, and Kenneth and Mary Sauls, Winder; daughter-in-law, Marie Sauls, Winder; adopted daughter, Peggy Gaston, Winder; two sisters, Johnnie Lou Magness and Eurilla Deaton, both of Winder; eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.

MR. JORDAN

ATHENS - Charles V. Jordan, 85, died Friday, March 23, 2001.
A native of Rockdale County, Mr. Jordan was a son of the late William Harrison and claude Ann Towns Jordan.
He was retired from Georgia Power, with 37 years of service, and was a member of Georgia Power Ambassadors. Mr. Jordan was of the Baptist faith.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 26, in the chapel of Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, East, with Dr. Buhl Cummings officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park.
Mr. Jordan is survived by his wife, Gladys Brown Jordan; one son, Charles Verner Jordan Jr., Nicholson; one daughter, Linda Jordan Akins, Winterville; one sister, Annette Jordan Dailey, Knoxville, Tenn.; two grandsons, Charles Verner Jordan III and Zachary Caleb Jordan; one granddaughter, Frances Elizabeth Akins; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to the East Athens Baptist Church Building Fund, 4325 Lexington Road, Athens, GA 30605.
