MT. AIRY - Mrs. Winnie Ruth Smith Wilbanks, 80, died Monday, January 1, 2001, at Habersham County Medical Center following an extended illness.
Born in Franklin County, Mrs. Wilbanks had lived most of her life in Mt. Airy. She was a daughter of the late Robert Lee and Minnie Elizabeth York Smith.
Mrs. Wilbanks was a homemaker and a member of Camp Creek Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a son, Terry Wilbanks.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 3, in the chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home, Cornelia, with the Revs. Billy Burrell and Billy Harris officiating. Burial was in the Rock Springs Baptist Church cemetery.
Survivors include her husband, Jewell Wilbanks, Mt. Airy; one son, Miles Wilbanks, Demorest; two brothers, Milton Smith and Jack Smith, both of Clarkesville; one sister, Carolyn Banks, Clarkesville; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

MR. WARD
World War II veteran
BALDWIN - J.D. Ward, 77, died Sunday, December 31, 2000, at his residence following an extended illness.
Mr. Ward was born February 5, 1923, in Banks County. He was a son of the late Lemuel and Nettie Payne Ward.
Mr. Ward was a U.S. Army World War II veteran and was a member of Grant Reeves Post #7720, Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was also a member of Nails Creek Baptist Church, Homer, and the AARP. Mr. Ward was formerly employed with Carwood Manufacturing Company and was retired from Grady Garment Company.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Rachel Blalock Ward, and a son, Steven Ward.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 2, 2001, at Nails Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Roy Rogers and Terry Rice officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery with the Rev. Gene Todd officiating at graveside.
Mr. Ward is survived by his wife, Pat Payne Ward, Baldwin; three daughters, Carol Elrod, Mt. Airy, Cathy Rogers, Lula, and DeAnn Downer, Cornelia; three sons, David Ward, Mt. Airy, Kirby Ward, Calhoun, and Milton Ward, Knoxville, Tenn.; one brother, Tom Ward, Commerce; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

MIAMI BEACH, FLA. - Mrs. Minnie Lee Batson Carpenter, 84, formerly of Cornelia, died Saturday, December 23, 2000, at Aventura Medical Center following an extended illness.
Mrs. Carpenter was born June 21, 1916, a daughter of the late Walter Grady and Tabitha Woodall Batson.
She was a homemaker and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Miami Beach, Fla.
Funeral services were held Saturday, December 30, in the chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home, Cornelia, with the Rev. Gene Batson officiating. Burial was in the New Hope Baptist Church cemetery.
Survivors include one son, James Melvin Carpenter, Union Point; two brothers, James D. Batson, Cornelia, and the Rev. Gene Batson, Cleveland; one sister, Betty Bell, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; and one grandchild, Leanne Dowdell, Rutledge.

COMMERCE - Mrs. Adell P. Elliott died Saturday, December 30, 2000.
Mrs. Elliott was a daughter of the late H.C. Parr and Cora Ledford Elliott. She was the wife of the late Guy Elliott.
Funeral services were held Monday, January 1, 2001, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce. Burial was in the Grove Level Cemetery.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Glorila Elliott, Griffin; brother, Clyde Parr, Commerce; sister, Ruth Bingham, Maysville; grandchildren, Connie and Jeff Carden, Zebulon, Randy Elliott Sr. and Rebecca Elliott, both of Griffin, and Rachel and Mark Henson, Winder; and seven great-grandchildren.

COMMERCE - John Dewaters, 67, formerly of Staten Island, N.Y., died Friday, December 29, 2000, at St. Mary's Hospital, Athens.
Mr. Dewaters was born May 15, 1933, in Staten Island, N.Y., a son of the late Abram and Rose Mooney Dewaters.
He had been employed as a salesman.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 2, 2001, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Harold Crawford officiating. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce.
Mr. Dewaters is survived by his wife, Marion Dewaters, Commerce; four sons, Arthur Dewaters, Welaka, Fla., Don Dewaters, New London, Conn., Raymond Dewaters, Louisiana, and Thomas Dewaters, Commerce; two daughters, Deann Dewaters, Hull, and Dorinda Hall, Maysville; one brother, James Dewaters, Staten Island, N.Y.; one sister, Mary Peters, Norwick, Conn.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

NICHOLSON - Paigelyn Bland, infant daughter of Anthony and Darlene Wright Bland, Nicholson, died Friday, December 29, 2000, at her residence following a brief illness.
Funeral services were held Monday, January 1, 2001, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Jerry Wheeler officiating. Burial was in Maxwell Cemetery.
Survivors, in addition to her parents, include a brother, Anthony Christopher Bland Jr., and sister, Christian Nicole Bland, both of Nicholson; grandparents, Roger and Pamela Pressley, Nicholson, Patricia Wright and Phillip Snead, Maysville, and Johnny William Wright Sr., Homer; great-grandparents, William J. and Vador H. MR. CASH
U.S. Army veteran
CARNESVILLE - Nelson Cash, 81, died Wednesday, December 27, 2000, at Lanier Park Hospital, Gainesville, following a short illness.
Mr. Cash was born June 20, 1919, in Banks County, a son of the late Elijah and Nelar Purcell Cash.
He served on the Democratic Committee for 16 years, and was the Justice of Peace for 16 years. Mr. Cash was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II.
At the age of 17, he began work as a poultry farmer, retiring after 64 years. Mr. Cash was a member of Damascus Baptist Church and a member of the Georgia Poultry Federation.
He was the last member of his immediate family.
Funeral services were held Friday, December 29, at Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, with the Rev. Roy Rogers, Warren Wilkinson and the Rev. Loyd Martin officiating. Burial was in the Damascus Baptist Church cemetery.
Mr. Cash is survived by his wife, Emily Stowe Cash, Carnesville; three daughters, Ann Cash Rooks, Flovilla, June Cash Collins, Cleveland, and Bonnie Cash Meeler, Maysville; one son, Nelson Loyd Cash Jr., Commerce; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

CARNESVILLE - Mrs. Eva Lou Tiller Fitzpatrick Lamb, 89, died Thursday, December 28, 2000, at Cobb Health Care Center, Comer.
Mrs. Lamb was born May 9, 1911, in Madison County. She was a daughter of the late Eddie Lee and Lillie Mae Vaughn Tiller.
Mrs. Lamb had worked as a switchboard operator with Saint Joseph's Hospital and was a homemaker. She was a member of Ila Baptist Church.
Mrs. Lamb was preceded in death by her first husband, Ralph G. Fitzpatrick, her second husband, D.T. Lamb, and a sister, Lucy Lester.
Funeral services were held Saturday, December 30, at Ila Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Anderson officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park, Athens.
Survivors include one daughter, Faye Hopson, Afton, Tenn.; four sons, Donald Fitzpatrick, Sanford, N.C., Edward Y. Fitzpatrick, Maryville, Tenn., Robert M. "Bob" Fitzpatrick, Carnesville, and Jimmy R. Fitzpatrick, McDonough; three sisters, Beatrice Carter, Madison, Mary Hooper Molis, Navaree Village, Ohio, and Sara Long, Commerce; 16 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

MR. STEPHENS
U.S. Army veteran
ATHENS - Willard Stephens, 73, died Saturday, December 30, 2000.
A native of Clarke County, Mr. Stephens was a son of the late Alexander and Cleo Weathers Stephens.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was retired from Champion Dairy Pak. Mr. Stephens was a member of Oconee Heights Baptist Church and a lifetime member of the V.F.W.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Spratlin Stephens.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 2, 2001, in the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home, Athens, with the Rev. Tom Lang officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park. Richard Horne, Johnny Stephens, Norman Cockrell, Larry Landrum, Ricky Nixon and Dan Harrell served as pallbearers.
Survivors include two sons, Kim Stephens, Athens, and Gene Stephens, Maysville; two daughters, Terry Evans and Tina Blount, both of Athens; one brother, J.C. Stephens, Greenwood, S.C.; two sisters, Gertrude Fields and Deloris Horne, both of Athens; grandchildren, Kristy Gee and Jackie Evans, both of Athens, and Nick Stephens, Maysville; great-grandchildren, Shane and Amber Gee, Athens; and a number of nieces and nephews.
