CORNELIA - Mrs. Cora Lee Wheeler, 92, died Wednesday, January 3, 2001, at Habersham County Medical Center following a brief illness.
Mrs. Wheeler was born in Habersham County on December 22, 1908. She was a homemaker and of the Church of God faith.
Mrs. Wheeler was preceded in death by her husband, David C. Wheeler, three brothers, John L. Vinson, Charlie Vinson and Lyman Vinson; two sisters, Bertha Brown and Annie Mae Savage; two infants; and a grandson, Jerry Eugene Rogers, killed in Vietnam.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 6, in the chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home, Cornelia, with the Revs. Paris Whitworth and Charles Morrison officiating. Burial was in Yonah Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include six daughters, Andrea Catlett, Blondine Tomlin and Rosa Lee Whitworth, all of Demorest, Nellaree Ellison, Clarkesville, Dot Hill, Ocean City, Md., and Linda Sanders, Mt. Airy; five sons, Douglas J. Wheeler, Willie Dee Wheeler and Paul W. Wheeler Sr., all of Demorest, David C. Wheeler Jr., Oakwood, and Randy Wheeler, St. Louis Park, Minn.; two sisters, Inez Eller, Hines City Park, Fla., and Louise Payne, Cornelia; 30 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

MR. HARRIS
World War II veteran
DEMOREST - John W. "Bill" Harris, 79, died Friday, January 5, 2001, at Emory University Hospital following an extended illness.
Mr. Harris was born September 15, 1921, in Banks County. He was a son of the late Johnny Alexander Harris and Martha Jane Whitfield Harris.
Mr. Harris was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army, and was a life member of Grant Reeves Post #7720, Veterans of Foreign Wars. He retired after 25 years of service with Schnadig Corporation and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.
Mr. Harris was preceded in death by two brothers, Carlo Harris and Roscoe Harris, and two sisters, Ora Mote and Cora Fincannon. He was the last member of his immediate family.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 7, at New Hope Baptist Church with the Revs. Hoyt Skelton and Telford Tanksley officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery with the Rev. Austin Kelley officiating at graveside.
Mr. Harris is survived by his wife, Flossie Tench Harris, Demorest; one daughter, Edith Irvin, Cornelia; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

MRS. JONES
Cornelia First Baptist Church member
CORNELIA - Mrs. Jewell Lee Black Jones died Friday, January 5, 2001, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Gainesville, following an extended illness.
Mrs. Jones was born February 6, 1918, in Habersham County. She was a daughter of the late Dyer and Pauline Black.
Mrs. Jones had worked as a production supervisor at Lockheed Inc., as a secretary at Habersham Metal Products and was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cornelia.
Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse L. Jones Sr.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 7, in the chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home, Cornelia, with Dr. T. Logan Smith officiating. Burial was in the Level Grove Cemetery.
Survivors include one daughter, Cheryl Adams, Greenville, N.C.; son and daughter-in-law, Jesse Lee and Debi Kytle Jones, Cornelia; one brother, Truett Black, Cornelia; and two grandchildren, Josh and Kalan Jones, both of Cornelia.

MRS. OWENSBY
Former Commerce High School counselor
GRIFFIN - Mrs. Louise Tumlin Owensby, 83, formerly of Commerce, died Wednesday, January 3, 2001, at Southland Nursing Home.
Mrs. Owensby was a graduate of Young Harris College and the University of Georgia. She earned her master's degree in counseling from the University of Georgia in the 1960s and was the only counselor at Commerce High School until her retirement in 1985.
Mrs. Owensby was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Commerce, as well as a member of many civic groups.
She moved to Griffin in 1993 and attended the First United Methodist Church of Griffin. Mrs. Owensby was active in the Senior Citizens Organization, First Friends and Pink Ladies at Spalding Regional Hospital.
A native of Forsyth County, Mrs. Owensby was a daughter of the late Candler and Isabella Tumlin, and the wife of the late Dr. William A. Owensby. She was preceded in death by a son, Charles William Owensby, and a sister, Emma Lee Orr.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 6, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Sam Storey officiating. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce.
Mrs. Owensby is survived by children, John and Evelyn McGavin, Griffin, and James "Jim" and Deborah Owensby, Douglasville; grandchildren, Erin, Andrea and Jonathan McGavin, all of Griffin, and Meridith and Matthew Owensby, Douglasville; sister, Virginia Martin, Tucker; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Robison, Carrollton; and many nieces and nephews.

Johnson High School graduate
CHESTNUT MOUNTAIN - Bryan David Strickland, 23, died Wednesday, January 3, 2001, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Gainesville, following a sudden illness.
A lifetime resident of Hall County, Mr. Strickland was a son of Terrel and Jean Strickland, Chestnut Mountain.
He was a graduate of Johnson High School and was in his final semester at Southern Tech before graduation. Mr. Strickland was preceded in death by his grandfather, Wiley Lee Strickland.
Funeral services were held Thursday, January 4, at Chestnut Mountain Presbyterian Church with the Revs. Danny McGill and John Batusic officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include one sister, Courtney Strickland, Chestnut Mountain; grandmother, Virginia Strickland, Chestnut Mountain; maternal grandparents, Ray and Mary Nell Martin, Flowery Branch; uncles and aunts, Jim and Jane Hawkinson, Slidell, La., Ed and Judy Cato, Jefferson, David and Jeanne Martin, Gillsville, Tony Martin, Flowery Branch, and Mark and Susan Strickland and Sammy and Shellby Stephens, all of Chestnut Mountain; cousins, Allen Castleberry, Matthew and Scott Hawkinson, Lori and Carla Cato, Kaylee Martin, Misty and Lacey Strickland and Elijah and Noah Stephens.

COMMERCE - Mrs. Annie Maude Hendricks, 83, died Saturday, January 6, 2001, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
A native of Madison County, Mrs. Hendricks was a daughter of the late Obe and Emma Okelly Chandler, and the wife of the late Hoyt H. Hendricks.
She was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church and was retired from Westclock and Commerce Sports Wear.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 7, at Mount Olive Baptist Church with the Revs. Brad Wilson and Carlton Peters officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Lamar and Sharon Hendricks, Commerce; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Ricky Cochran, Commerce; brother, James Smith, Atlanta; sister, Mary Ruth Brock, East Point; and four grandchildren.

MR. BAILEY
Jackson County native
Crawford Bailey, born August 30, 1914, in Jackson County, died Thursday, December 28, 2000, at DeKalb Medical Center, Decatur.
Mr. Bailey was one of 10 children born to the late Clinton and Lilly Griffin Bailey. He joined St. Paul First Baptist Church, Jefferson, under the ministry of the Rev. J.W. Evans.
Mr. Bailey was preceded in death by his wife, Emma L. Lester Bailey, and a son, Herman Lester.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 3, 2001, at St. Paul First Baptist Church with Pastor Marvin Simmons officiating. Burial was in the Poplar Springs Baptist Church cemetery, Arcade.
Mr. Bailey is survived by four daughters, Cenetta Johnson, Dallas, Mrs. Gladys Browner, Jackson, Mich., Mrs. Betty Richardson, Stone Mountain, and Sarah Bailey, Atlanta; three brothers, Nathaniel (Ella Mae) Bailey and the Rev. James (Malrose) Bailey, both of Jefferson, and Cleveland Bailey, Atlanta; one sister, Mrs. Sybil Ann Wilson, Dayton, Ohio; 16 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; a special cousin, Mrs. Myra Margaret Cofer, Atlanta; two special family friends, Mrs. Mildred Albert, Atlanta, and Dan Martin, Commerce; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

DANIELSVILLE - James Alfred Wilson Jr., 37, died Sunday, January 7, 2001, at his residence following an extended illness.
Mr. Wilson was born September 27, 1963, in Gwinnett County. He was a son of James A. Wilson, Jefferson, and the late Brenda Smith Wilson.
Mr. Wilson was employed as a pipe fitter and was a member of Harvest Chapel.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, January 8, in the chapel of Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson, with the Rev. Vince Mercardante officiating. Burial was in the Dry Pond Methodist Church cemetery, Maysville. Hilmer McGaha, Bobby Peavy, Jimmy Waters, Billy Wilson, Chris Wilson and Micky Wilson served as pallbearers.
In addition to his father, Mr. Wilson is survived by his wife, Melissa Wilson, Danielsville; one son, Adam Wilson, Danielsville; one daughter, Amanda Wilson, Danielsville; and one sister, Brenda Ann Brown, Danielsville.

SMYRNA - Gary Taylor, 52, died Thursday, January 4, 2001, at his residence following an extended illness.
Mr. Taylor was born October 4, 1948, a son of Burrell and Audrey LeMarr Taylor, Commerce.
He was employed as a financial consultant.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 7, at the First Baptist Church of Commerce with the Revs. Kent Cranford and Ray Austin officiating. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Park, Commerce.
Mr. Taylor is survived by his wife, Kay Taylor, Smyrna; sisters and brothers-in-law, Sharon T. and Sammy Highsmith and Karen T. and William Westbrooks, all of Commerce; two nephews, John Taylor Rylee and Casey T. Westbrooks; and two nieces, Lisa McDonald and Laura Westbrooks.

CARNESVILLE - Fred Hill, 63, died Thursday, January 4, 2001, at Ty Cobb Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Hill was born July 28, 1937, in Franklin County, a son of the late Ben and Vetter Patrick Hill.
He was a retired farmer. Mr. Hill was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph Hill, and a sister, Helen Norton.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, January 6, at Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, with the Rev. Leon Carson officiating. Burial was in the Leatherwood Baptist Church cemetery.
Mr. Hill is survived by his wife, Fannie Ruth Simmons Hill, Carnesville; two daughters, Barbara Morris, Carnesville, and Betty Trousdale, Commerce; five sisters, Blondine Baxter, Baldwin, Geraldine Doss, Martin, Ruby Smith, Alto, Mae Maney, Cornelia, and Jimmy Sue Thurmond, Athens; four brothers, Coleman Hill, Thomas Hill and Wayman Hill, all of Baldwin, and Ricky Hill, Homer; and three grandchildren.
