HOSCHTON - Mrs. Ruth Tatum Cronic, 88, died Monday, January 1, 2001.
Born in Hall County, Mrs. Cronic had resided in Gwinnett County for most of her life. She was a daughter of the late Will and Minnie Sheridan Tatum.
Mrs. Cronic was a retired seamstress and was a longtime member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Cronic, and a daughter, Rachel Fleeman.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 3, at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include children, John Willie Cronic, Lois Love, Dorothy Cronic and Bobby Cronic, all of Hoschton, and Sarah L. Trinite, Winder; 15 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

COMMERCE - Mrs. Adell P. Elliott died Saturday, December 30, 2000.
Mrs. Elliott was a daughter of the late H.C. Parr and Cora Ledford Elliott. She was the wife of the late Guy Elliott.
Funeral services were held Monday, January 1, 2001, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce. Burial was in the Grove Level Cemetery.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Glorila Elliott, Griffin; brother, Clyde Parr, Commerce; sister, Ruth Bingham, Maysville; grandchildren, Connie and Jeff Carden, Zebulon, Randy Elliott Sr. and Rebecca Elliott, both of Griffin, and Rachel and Mark Henson, Winder; and seven great-grandchildren.

COMMERCE - John Dewaters, 67, formerly of Staten Island, N.Y., died Friday, December 29, 2000, at St. Mary's Hospital, Athens.
Mr. Dewaters was born May 15, 1933, in Staten Island, N.Y., a son of the late Abram and Rose Mooney Dewaters.
He had been employed as a salesman.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 2, 2001, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Harold Crawford officiating. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce.
Mr. Dewaters is survived by his wife, Marion Dewaters, Commerce; four sons, Arthur Dewaters, Welaka, Fla., Don Dewaters, New London, Conn., Raymond Dewaters, Louisiana, and Thomas Dewaters, Commerce; two daughters, Deann Dewaters, Hull, and Dorinda Hall, Maysville; one brother, James Dewaters, Staten Island, N.Y.; one sister, Mary Peters, Norwick, Conn.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

CUMBERLAND, MD. - Leo Frederick Appel, 84, died Monday, December 25, 2000.
Mr. Appel was born August 9, 1916, in Little Orleans, Md., a son of the late John Crummbel Appel and Melesta Hester Martin Appel.
He was a retired equipment superintendent for the Eastern Region of the B & O Railroad (which then became the Chessie System).
Mr. Appel was preceded in death by two sons, George "Fred" Appel and Gary Lamar Appel Sr., a great-great-grandson, Robert Christopher Appel Price Jr., a sister, Mildred Appel Chaney, and three brothers, Earl Franklin Appel, John Watson Wright Appel and Carl Appel.
Funeral services were held Thursday, December 28, in the chapel of Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., Cumberland, Md., with Pastor Timothy McGregor, grandson of Mr. Appel, officiating. Burial was in Restlawn Memorial Gardens. Gary Lee Appel, Gary Lamar Appel Jr., Timothy McGregor, Craig Appel, Carl Meagher and Ian Maddy served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Todd Appel and Charles Gay.
Mr. Appel is survived by his wife, Georgie L. U.S. Army veteran
CARNESVILLE - Nelson Cash, 81, died Wednesday, December 27, 2000, at Lanier Park Hospital, Gainesville, following a short illness.
Mr. Cash was born June 20, 1919, in Banks County, a son of the late Elijah and Nelar Purcell Cash.
He served on the Democratic Committee for 16 years, and was the Justice of Peace for 16 years. Mr. Cash was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II.
At the age of 17, he began work as a poultry farmer, retiring after 64 years. Mr. Cash was a member of Damascus Baptist Church and a member of the Georgia Poultry Federation.
He was the last member of his immediate family.
Funeral services were held Friday, December 29, at Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, with the Rev. Roy Rogers, Warren Wilkinson and the Rev. Loyd Martin officiating. Burial was in the Damascus Baptist Church cemetery.
Mr. Cash is survived by his wife, Emily Stowe Cash, Carnesville; three daughters, Ann Cash Rooks, Flovilla, June Cash Collins, Cleveland, and Bonnie Cash Meeler, Maysville; one son, Nelson Loyd Cash Jr., Commerce; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

ATHENS - Willard Stephens, 73, died Saturday, December 30, 2000.
A native of Clarke County, Mr. Stephens was a son of the late Alexander and Cleo Weathers Stephens.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was retired from Champion Dairy Pak. Mr. Stephens was a member of Oconee Heights Baptist Church and a lifetime member of the V.F.W.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Spratlin Stephens.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 2, 2001, in the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home, Athens, with the Rev. Tom Lang officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park. Richard Horne, Johnny Stephens, Norman Cockrell, Larry Landrum, Ricky Nixon and Dan Harrell served as pallbearers.
Survivors include two sons, Kim Stephens, Athens, and Gene Stephens, Maysville; two daughters, Terry Evans and Tina Blount, both of Athens; one brother, J.C. Stephens, Greenwood, S.C.; two sisters, Gertrude Fields and Deloris Horne, both of Athens; grandchildren, Kristy Gee and Jackie Evans, both of Athens, and Nick Stephens, Maysville; great-grandchildren, Shane and Amber Gee, Athens; and a number of nieces and nephews.

WINDER - Joe W. "Papa Joe" White, 83, died Saturday, December 30, 2000.
Born in Jackson County, Mr. White had lived in Winder since 1982. He was a son of the late Luther White and Annie Caigle.
Mr. White was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy, and had worked in the textile industry. He was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 2, 2001, at The Winder Worship Center with the Revs. Eugene Prichett and Doug Palmer officiating. Burial was in Barrow Memorial Gardens. Billy White, Jeff White, Rodney White, Gregg Cannon, Andy Cannon and John Strickland served as pallbearers.

CARNESVILLE - Mrs. Eva Lou (Tiller) Fitzpatrick Lamb, 89, died Thursday, December 28, 2000, at Cobb Health Care Center, Comer.
Mrs. Lamb was born May 9, 1911, in Madison County. She was a daughter of the late Eddie Lee and Lillie Mae Vaughn Tiller.
Mrs. Lamb had worked as a switchboard operator with Saint Joseph's Hospital and was a homemaker. She was a member of Ila Baptist Church.
Mrs. Lamb was preceded in death by her first husband, Ralph G. Fitzpatrick, her second husband, D.T. Lamb, and a sister, Lucy Lester.
Funeral services were held Saturday, December 30, at Ila Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Anderson officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park, Athens.
Survivors include one daughter, Faye Hopson, Afton, Tenn.; four sons, Donald Fitzpatrick, Sanford, N.C., Edward Y. Fitzpatrick, Maryville, Tenn., Robert M. "Bob" Fitzpatrick, Carnesville, and Jimmy R. ATHENS - Paul E. Cowart, 78, died Wednesday, December 27, 2000.
A native of Jackson County, Mr. Cowart was a son of the late Ernest Garfield and Annie Rosa Lee Smith Cowart.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served from 1942 to 1945, and was a Purple Heart recipient.
Mr. Cowart was preceded in death by his wife, Flora Pearson Cowart, a son, Paul Michael Cowart, and three brothers, Grady Cowart, Billy Cowart and J.C. Cowart.
Funeral services were held Friday, December 29, in the chapel of Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, East, with the Rev. Jamie Doster officiating. Burial was in the Moons Grove Baptist Church cemetery. World War II veteran
BALDWIN - J.D. Ward, 77, died Sunday, December 31, 2000, at his residence following an extended illness.
Mr. Ward was born February 5, 1923, in Banks County. He was a son of the late Lemuel and Nettie Payne Ward.
Mr. Ward was a U.S. Army World War II veteran and was a member of Grant Reeves Post #7720, Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was also a member of Nails Creek Baptist Church, Homer, and the AARP. Mr. Ward was formerly employed with Carwood Manufacturing Company and was retired from Grady Garment Company.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Rachel Blalock Ward, and a son, Steven Ward.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 2, 2001, at Nails Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Roy Rogers and Terry Rice officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery with the Rev. Gene Todd officiating at graveside.
Mr. Ward is survived by his wife, Pat Payne Ward, Baldwin; three daughters, Carol Elrod, Mt. Airy, Cathy Rogers, Lula, and DeAnn Downer, Cornelia; three sons, David Ward, Mt. Airy, Kirby Ward, Calhoun, and Milton Ward, Knoxville, Tenn.; one brother, Tom Ward, Commerce; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
