WINDER - Hughlan G. Peppers, 72, died Saturday, December 30, 2000.
Born in Barrow County, Mr. Peppers was a son of the late George and Rilla Taylor Peppers.
He was a retired custodian with Barrow Medical Center and was a member of Chapel Christian Church.
Graveside services were held Sunday, December 31, in Rose Hill cemetery with the Rev. Donnie Pennington officiating. Ricky Peppers, Steve Peppers, Jimmy Peppers, Kyle Peppers, Brad Peppers and Brian Peppers served as pallbearers.
Survivors include four sons, Larry E. Peppers, Ricky Peppers, Steve Peppers and Jimmy Peppers, all of Winder; four sisters, Robbie Embry, Dacula, Jean Beddington, Conyers, Alice Jackson, Winder, and Jodie Taylor, Lake City; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

MRS. SEYMOUR
Retired account analyst
GILLSVILLE - Mrs. Betty Sue Seymour, 70, died Monday, January 1, 2001, at Lanier Park Hospital, Gainesville, following a brief illness.
A native of Fulton County, Mrs. Seymour was a daughter of the late Gober and Lucy Booth Hall.
She moved to Hall County in 1984 after living in Bowman for a number of years. Mrs. Seymour was retired from Liberty National Insurance Company as an account analyst and had been employed with J&J Foods. She was a member of Montgomery Memorial Baptist Church.
Mrs. Seymour was preceded in death by a sister, Delray H. Sockwell.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 3, in the chapel of Hillside Funeral Home, Gainesville, with the Rev. Fulton Boswell officiating. Burial was in the Deep Creek Baptist Church cemetery, Dewey Rose.
Mrs. Seymour is survived by her husband, Perry Seymour, Gillsville; son and daughter-in-law, James Keith and Sheila D. Dickerson, Gillsville; daughter and son-in-law, Karen D. and Ronnie H. McDowell, Bowman; one brother, Carl Hall, West Minister, S.C.; one sister, Winnie Looney, Morrow; two grandsons, Andy McDowell, Lavonia, and James Kyle Dickerson, Gillsville; and a number of other relatives.

MR. NILES
Truck driver
COMMERCE - Richard Niles, 80, died Saturday, December 30, 2000.
A native of Jackson County, Mr. Niles was a son of the late Robert and Anna Niles.
He attended Jackson County public schools. Mr. Niles drove a tractor trailer for 30 years and taught over 25 men to drive tractor trailers. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ailmera Jackson Niles, and a daughter, Mary Sue Harper.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 4, 2001, at Mount Calvary Baptist Church with the Revs. A.R. Brown, W.F. Pattmon and Elder W. Salley officiating.
Survivors include three sons, Willie Richard Niles, Rome, and Robert Lee Niles and Leroy Niles, both of Commerce; one brother, John B. Niles, Duluth; 17 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Prospect UMC cemetery rites
ATHENS - Mrs. Evelyn Clotfelter Smathers, 93, died Sunday, December 31, 2000.
A native of Athens, Mrs. Smathers was a daughter of the late John Leonard and Alice Petersen Clotfelter.
She was a member of Young Harris United Methodist Church. Mrs. Smathers was preceded in death by her husband, Troy O. Smathers.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, January 2, 2001, in the Prospect United Methodist Church cemetery with the Rev. Tom Lang officiating.
Mrs. Smathers is survived by one sister-in-law, Mrs. Leon Clotfelter, Cartersville; and nieces and nephews.

Southern Bell retiree
GAINESVILLE - Mrs. Mary McDonald Dean, 77, died Tuesday, January 2, 2001, at New Horizon West Nursing Home following an extended illness.
A native of Hall County, Mrs. Dean was retired from Southern Bell, where she worked in management. She was a member of Lakewood Baptist Church, a member of the Order of Eastern Star and a member of the Pioneer Club of Southern Bell.
Funeral services will be held at a later date.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Rae Greene, Gainesville; sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Col. Jim Martin, Atlanta; grandchildren, Courtney and Matt Kistler, Chicago, Ill., and Hadley and Dr. Randall Smith and Wil Green, all of Athens; and two great-grandchildren.

JEFFERSON - Frank Gooch, 97, died Wednesday, December 27, 2000, at his residence following a sudden illness.
Mr. Gooch was born August 10, 1903, in Union County, a son of the late Harve and Arvie Ward Gooch.
He was an active farmer and was a member of Walnut Fork Baptist Church, Hoschton.
Mr. Gooch was preceded in death by his wife, Viola Mae McNeal Gooch, and a son, Myron Gooch.
Funeral services were held Saturday, December 30, in the chapel of Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson, with the Revs. Kenneth Brewer, Wesley Sanders and Lewis Gooch officiating. Burial was at Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce. Bobby Gooch, Donald Gooch, Dover Gooch, Jimmy Gooch, Tony Gooch and Charles Sessa served as pallbearers.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Nell and Joe Dale, Gainesville; son and daughter-in-law, Lewis and Gwen Gooch, Live Oak, Fla.; daughter-in-law, Navona Gooch, Jefferson; special friend, Jean Bryan, Jefferson; five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

BRASELTON - Bobby T. Smith, 65, died Sunday, January 14, 2001, at Barrow County Medical Center.
Mr. Smith was born in Hall County, where he had lived most of his life, and had resided in Braselton for the past 15 years. He was a son of the late Ernest and Fannie Gravitt Smith.
Mr. Smith was retired from Lanier Raceway, where he had worked for a number of years, and was a member of Fairview Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, January 16, in the chapel of Hillside Funeral Home, Gainesville, with the Revs. Hoyt Ivester and Warren Huddleston officiating. Burial was in Hillside Gardens, Gainesville.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Jerry Owens, Gainesville; son, Jimmy Smith, Macon; son and daughter-in-law, Johnny and Stacy Smith, Flowery Branch; sister, Gaynell Allison, Gainesville; brother, Herman Smith, Gainesville; grandchildren, Ashley, Jessica, Shelley and Jonathan Smith and Shawn and Chad Owens; a special friend, Betty Woodring, Gainesville; and a number of nieces and nephews.

JEFFERSON - Mrs. Mary Lee J. Harper, 93, of Payneville Road, died Friday, January 12, 2001.
A native of White County, Mrs. Harper was born August 25, 1907, a daughter of the late Jessie and Anna Blalock Jackson. She was the widow of Lester Harper.
Mrs. Harper was a homemaker and was a member of Apple Valley Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 14, in the chapel of Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson, with the Rev. Hulon C. Hill officiating. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce. Ray Thomas, Charlie Thomas Jr., Wayne Harper, Marvin Poe, Brian Jackson and Johnny Stancil served as pallbearers.
Survivors include son, Lewis, and wife, Ellie Wier Harper, Decatur; two grandchildren, Gene, and wife, Karen Harper, Stone Mountain, and Nina Harper, Decatur; two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Katherine Harper, both of Stone Mountain; three sisters, Pearl Wilkes, Forest Park, and Ruth Stancil and Louise Poe, both of Jefferson; two sisters-in-law, Helen L. MR. HAMILTON
World War II veteran
JEFFERSON - Sherrod Wesley Hamilton, 79, died Tuesday, January 16, 2001, at Athens Regional Medical Center following an extended illness.
Mr. Hamilton was born April 9, 1921, in Clarke County, a son of the late William Leonard and Emma Lord Hamilton.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army with the Battery B 214th Coast Artillery AA. Mr. Hamilton was a retired pharmacist and was a member of Grace Fellowship Church, Watkinsville.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, January 19, in the chapel of Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson, with Pastors Terry Ross and Tracy Reynolds officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Winder. Fred Glass, Fred Gurley, Alan Hamilton, Jason Hamilton, Jeremiah Hamilton and Joe Loyal will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Battery B 214th Coast Artillery AA.
Mr. Hamilton is survived by his wife, Mellie Anne Hamilton, Jefferson; five sons, Gary Hamilton, Durham, N.C., George Hamilton and Paul Hamilton, both of Starke, Fla., Jim Hamilton, Villa Rica, and Mark Hamilton, Tampa, Fla.; one brother, Pastor D. Jack Hamilton, Madison Heights, Va.; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

U.S. Army veteran
COMMERCE - William Odell Wilson, 69, died Monday, January 15, 2001, at the V.A. Medical Center.
Mr. Wilson was born July 22, 1931, in Jackson County. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was retired from the Georgia Department of Transportation.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 17, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce. Burial was in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.
Survivors include one son, Johnny Wilson, Commerce; one brother, Russell Wilson, Commerce; two sisters, Virginia Archer, Nicholson, and Jannie Lee Ballenger, Carnesville; one granddaughter, Tonya Wilson, Commerce; and one niece, Betty Collins, Carnesville.
