COMMERCE - Mrs. Eva Hassie Garrett, 65, died Monday, January 22, 2001, at her residence following an extended illness.
Mrs. Garrett was born January 11, 1936, in Banks County, a daughter of the late Elijah Redmond and Bessie Smith Redmond.
She was a homemaker and a member of New Hope Worship Center, Danielsville.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 25, at New Hope Worship Center with the Revs. Dennis Kesler, Jonathan Randall and Walter Venable officiating. The body will lie in state at the church from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Garrett is survived by her husband, Victor Garrett, Commerce; one son, Ricky Garrett, Commerce; two daughters, Patsy Garrett and Kathy Anderson, both of Commerce; one brother, Richard Redmond, Maysville; two sisters, Molly Parson and Daisy Shubert, both of Maysville; two grandchildren, Chris Garrett and Daniel Anderson, both of Commerce; and one great-grandchild, Ricky D. Garrett, Commerce.
The family was to have received friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce.

MISS HILL

HULL - Miss Gina Hill, 40, died Saturday, January 20, 2001, at Scottland Memorial Hospital, Laurinburg, N.C.
Miss Hill was born July 23, 1960, in Atlanta. She was a daughter of Jean Hill, Maysville, and the late Clark Hill.
Miss Hill was employed with Red Lobster, Athens, and was of the Baptist denomination.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 23, at Ridgeway Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Manus officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
In addition to her mother, Miss Hill is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Miranda Jean and Stacy Batchelor Sr., Marston, N.C.; two grandchildren, Brittany and Stacy Jr.; her fiancé, Wes Roberts, Athens; five sisters, Cindy Baird and Christy Phelps, both of Maysville, Pat Clinton, Commerce, Marcia Sullivan, Wagram, N.C., and Jennifer Wright, Conyers; two brothers, Bill Hill, McDonough, and Obie Faulkner, Maysville; six nieces, 13 nephews, two great-nieces and one great-nephew.

HOMER - Leon Worley, 80, died Friday, January 19, 2001, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
A native of Banks County, Mr. Worley was born July 11, 1920, a son of the late Rubin and Carrie Davis Worley.
He was retired from Garrison Lumber Company and was a member of Bethany Christian Church. Mr. Worley was preceded in death by his wife, Rosa Bruce Worley, and a brother, Rubin Worley Jr.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 21, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with Jerry Payne and the Rev. William Campbell officiating. Burial was in the Silver Shoals Baptist Church cemetery.
Survivors include four brothers, Bobby Worley, Nicholson, Jack Worley, Winder, Lonnie Worley, Gainesville, and Roy Worley, Helen; three sisters, Mildred Green and Myrtle Lawson, both of Nicholson, and Ruby Standridge, Brockton Community; and nieces and nephews.

LAVONIA - Reuben Dean Haire, 51, died Sunday, January 21, 2001, at his residence.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 27, at the residence.
Mr. Haire is survived by his wife, Darine Doster Haire; five children, Hope Abbs, Commerce, Donnie Ray Lewis, Lawrenceville, Carlton Lewis, Gainesville, Timothy Hiland, Canon, and Christine Brock, Lavonia; two brothers, Billy Haire, Hartwell, and Harvey Haire, Baytown, Texas; one sister, Edie Counts, Idabele, Okla.; and three grandchildren, Page, Kyle and Randall.

ATHENS - Mrs. Ella Virginia Wier Whitehead, 80, died Monday, January 22, 2001.
A native of Jackson County, Mrs. Whitehead was a daughter of the late Charlie and Mattie Pinson Wier.
She was a homemaker and a member of Cornerstone Christian Church. Mrs. Whitehead was preceded in death by her husband, Willie B. Whitehead, and a daughter, Martha Ann Baker.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 25, in the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home, Athens, with the Rev. Hal Tapp officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Survivors include two daughters, Virginia Mattie Sorrow, Athens, and Brenda Sue Carithers, Nashville, Tenn.; one son, Anthony Flores, Hull; two sisters, Inez Standridge, Jefferson, and Lounette Hardeman, Roopville; 18 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and a number of nieces and nephews.

CARNESVILLE - Mrs. Ebbie Gladys Chambers Gipson, 86, died Friday, January 19, 2001, at the Comer Nursing Center, Comer.
Mrs. Gipson was born March 17, 1914, in Banks County, a daughter of the late William S. and Mae Wood Chambers.
She was a homemaker and a member of Cross Roads Baptist Church. Mrs. Gipson was preceded in death by her husband, Ira Frank Gipson Jr., and a brother, J.M. Chambers.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 21, at B.D. Ginn Memorial Chapel of Ginn Funeral Home, Carnesville, with the Revs. Michael Bell and John H. Swanger officiating. Burial was in Franklin Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include two sons, Sonny Gipson and Tim Gipson, both of Carnesville; one daughter, Susie Coleman, Charleston, W. Va.; one sister, Edith Sullivan, Commerce; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

ATHENS - Mrs. Angie Sell Freeman, 86, died Monday, January 15, 2001.
A native of Barrow County, Mrs. Freeman was a daughter of the late J.C. and Bertha Sell Burroughs.
She was connected with the Food Services Department of the University of Georgia for over 26 years, retiring in 1984. Mrs. Freeman was a member of Tuckston United Methodist Church.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 18, in the Hoschton cemetery with the Rev. Tom Lang officiating.
Survivors include a sister, Thelma Fair, Colbert; grandchildren, Tracy Oldham, Jefferson, Ronnie Hamilton, Palmyra, Pa., Jerry Hamilton, Stone Mountain, and Terry Hamilton, Harwick; four great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

GRAND RAPIDS - Robert N. Haugen, 84, died Thursday, January 18, 2001, in the Itasca Medical Center, Grand Rapids.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 21, in the chapel of Peterson Funeral Home, Coleraine.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Jane (Norlander) Haugen; children, David (Kay) Haugen, Jefferson, John (Tina) Johnson, Olustee, Okla., and Roy (Linda) Johnson, Pottsboro, Texas; two granddaughters, two grandsons and one great-grandson.
His parents, Christian and Effie Haugen, a granddaughter, Barbara Ann Johnson, a sister, Noreen Thomas, and a brother, Earl Haugen, preceded him in death.

COMMERCE - Danny Morgan Sorrow, 51, died Tuesday, January 23, 2001, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
A native of Greenville County, S.C., Mr. Sorrow was born August 19, 1949, a son of the late James Verner Sorrow and Jenny Standridge Sorrow Waters.
He was a carpenter and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Commerce.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 25, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. John Turlington officiating. Burial will be in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce.
Survivors include one son, Lee Sorrow, Commerce; one daughter, Jennifer Sorrow, Commerce; one brother, Bryan "Huck" Sorrow, Commerce; five step-sisters and one step-brother.

STATHAM - The Rev. Ollie Junior Mathis, 81, died Monday, January 22, 2001, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
Mr. Mathis was a son of the late B.O. Mathis and Maybell Tarply Mathis.
He was retired from the Georgia Department of Transportation, with 30 years of service, and was the minister of Dove Creek Holiness Church. Mr. Mathis was preceded in death by his wife, Bennie Ruth Mathis, and a daughter, Mildred Dunn.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 24, in the chapel of Smith Funeral Home, Winder. Burial was in Barrow Memorial Gardens.
The Rev. Mathis is survived by children, Sandra Phillips, Bethlehem, Benny Mathis, Commerce, and Randall Mathis, Statham; a nephew like a son, Tony Womack; brother, the Rev. J.L. Mathis, Winder; sisters, Helen Cash, Bogart, Joyce Sellars, Perry, Peggy Casper and Charlotte Edgar, both of Winder; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

WINDER - Myron Forrest Wilson, 71, died Thursday, January 25, 2001, at Winder Health Care.
Mr. Wilson was born March 25, 1929, a son of the late William Hubert and Elsie Oliver Wilson.
He was employed as a kitchen worker with Barrow County Schools. Mr. Wilson was preceded in death by a brother, Autry Wilson.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 28, in Smith Memory Chapel of Smith Funeral Home, Winder, with the Revs. Jim Stephens and Terry Brock officiating. Burial was in Barrow Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Wilson is survived by his wife, Fannie B. Wilson, Winder; three sons, Ronnie Wilson, Pendergrass, Eddie Wilson, Pensacola, Fla., and Kevin Wilson, Gainesville; two daughters, Sylvia Wilson Henry, Sunset, S.C., and Lynn Wilson Greenway, Gainesville; several step-children; three brothers, Winfred Wilson, Statham, Nolan Wilson, Winder, and Brannon Wilson, Hoschton; two sisters, Flora Mae Rollins, Dudley, N.C., and Lois Ward, Hoschton; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
