Mother of two
PENDERGRASS - Mrs. Cheryl Jones Clapsaddle, 46, died Tuesday, January 23, 2001, in Jackson County.
Mrs. Clapsaddle was born June 11, 1954, a daughter of the late J.W. and Pauline Williams Jones.
She was employed with Wal-Mart, Commerce. Mrs. Clapsaddle was preceded in death by a brother, Terrenc Jones.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 27, in Smith Memory Chapel of Smith Funeral Home, Winder.
Mrs. Clapsaddle is survived by her husband, Craig Clapsaddle, Pendergrass; one son, Russell Woodruff, Hoschton; one daughter, Jessica Wells, Pendergrass; three brothers, Paul R. Jones, Buford, Jerry Jones, Lithia Springs, and Tim Jones, Douglasville; two sisters, Gloria Ladanyi, Oakwood, and Wanda Mahfuz, Chamblee; and three grandchildren.
A memorial fund has been established at First Piedmont Bank in Winder.

Retired seamstress
BRASELTON - Mrs. Amanda Loggins Beck, 76, died Saturday, January 27, 2001, at St. Joseph's Hospital, Atlanta, following an extended illness.
A lifelong resident of Hall County, Mrs. Beck was a daughter of the late Charlie and Mary Lou Johnson Loggins.
She was a retired seamstress with Carwood Manufacturing and was a member of Dewberry Baptist Church #2.
She was loved by all who knew her, said family members.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, January 29, in the chapel of Little-Davenport Funeral Home, Gainesville, with the Revs. Roy Lee Mitchell and Earl Gilstrap officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Beck is survived by her husband, Homer Lee Beck, Braselton; sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Gayla Beck, Suwanee, and Ronnie and Denise Beck, Watkinsville; daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Neal Watkins, Lula; granddaughters, Brandi Beck, Hailey Beck, Allie Beck and Stacey Witham; grandsons, Beau Beck, Chris Beck, Whit Beck, Scott Watkins, Kevin Watkins and Patrick Conway; four sisters, Idell Fowler, Genie Whelchel and Mary Nell White, all of Gainesville, and Betty Grizzle, Fairborne, Ohio; and two brothers, Howell Loggins and Ray Loggins, both of Gainesville.

MRS. LAROY
Mother of four
COMMERCE - Mrs. Betty Starr LaRoy, 76, formerly of Cumming, died Saturday, January 27, 2001, following an extended illness.
Mrs. LaRoy was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Charles Edward LaRoy.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 30, at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church with the Revs. Jim McGraw and Jackie Stowers officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Pat and David McClure, Commerce, and Linda and Jackie Stowers and Charlene and Robert Padgett, all of Cumming; daughter, Elizabeth "Liz" LaRoy, Cumming; grandchildren, Eddie and Mindy Stowers, Susie and Stacey Reid and Christi Starr Padgett, all of Cumming, and Shane C. and Lisa Cape, Commerce; great-grandchildren, Dustin Sharp, Tobie Johnson, Austin Reid, Caleb Stowers and Gavin Stowers, all of Cumming, and Billy Dunn and Katie Cape, both of Commerce; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Marvin Akin, Sarah and Arden Taylor and Ann and Ed Green; brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Lois Starr, Conyers; and other relatives.

MR. HENSLEY
Truck driver, farmer
MAYSVILLE - Philip Ray Hensley, 63, died Saturday, January 20, 2001, at his residence following a brief illness.
Born in Jackson County, N.C., Mr. Hensley was a son of the late Luther and Beatrice Hensley.
He was a truck driver, a farmer and was a member of Oconee Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Monday, January 22, at Oconee Baptist Church with the Revs. Kenneth Barrett and Eddie Herring officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Gainesville.
Mr. Hensley is survived by his wife, Barbara Hensley, Maysville; daughter and son-in-law, Dawn and Shain Parr, Maysville; son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Tracy Hensley, Maysville; granddaughters, Kelsie Parr and McKenzie; and grandsons, Nicholas Parr and Matthew Hensley.

Joel B. Butts
Joel Bernard Butts, 83, died Sunday, January 28, 2001, at his home at 524 Walton Circle, Monroe.
Mr. Butts, a native of Monroe, was born December 29, 1917, to the late Joel W. and Elizabeth L. Butts. He graduated from the University of Georgia, where he served as editor of the yearbook and was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He returned to Monroe to work for The Farmers Bank as head cashier. He advanced to first vice president and served on the board of directors from 1956 through 1973, during which time the bank name changed to First American Bank.
In 1942, Mr. Butts enlisted in the U.S. Army and was sent overseas during World War II until March 1945. He served as a major with the 1st Armored Division, serving as a tank commander in North Africa and in the Italian campaign, and during this time, he met his future wife, Florence Schou, who was enlisted in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. Mrs. Butts preceded him in death January 28, 2000.
A member of the First Baptist Church of Monroe, he served as a trustee and chairman of the board of deacons. He was a member of the Monroe Kiwanis Club for 32 years, serving as president in 1953. He was chairman of the Monroe Water, Light and Gas Commission for three years and served as a member for a number of years. Mr. Butts was a former director of the Monroe-Walton Chamber of Commerce.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Anita B. Sams.
A graveside service was held Wednesday, January 31, at Rest Haven Cemetery, Monroe, with the Rev. Glen Money officiating.
Mr. Butts is survived by two daughters, Susan B. Foster, Atlanta, and Barbara B. Beardsley, Commerce; and four grandchildren, Jennifer Foster, Atlanta, Joel Foster, Memphis, Tenn., Laura Beardsley, Atlanta, and Steven Beardsley, Commerce.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the American Heart Association.

Edna F. Wheelbarger
Mrs. Edna F. Helmintoller Wheelbarger, 81, of Danielsville, died Tuesday, January 16, 2001.
A native of Selma, Va., Mrs. Wheelbarger was a daughter of the late Louis and Gracie Emore Helmintoller.
She was a veteran of the U.S. Army, was a homemaker and was a Jehovah's Witness.
Mrs. Wheelbarger is survived by her husband, Arnold Q. Wheelbarger; one son, Phillip Arnold Wheelbarger, New Hampshire; and one grandchild.

Henry C. Harris
Henry C. Harris, of Commerce, died Monday, January 15, 2001, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Gainesville, following an extended illness.
Mr. Harris was born April 29, 1938, a son of the late Henry Richard Harris and Elizabeth Towe Harris.
He was a truck driver, having worked for D&D Transportation for many years.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 18, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Revs. Henry Webb and Johnny Loudermilk officiating. Burial will be in Banks Memorial Gardens, Homer, with military honors.
Mr. Harris is survived by his wife, Barbara Cowart Harris, Commerce; one son, Tracy Harris, Hartwell; one brother, James W. Harris, Hartwell; four sisters, Virginia Billings, Starr, S.C., Henrietta O'Dell and Mary Clark, both of Hartwell, and Betty Hulsey, Mt. Airy; and two grandchildren.
The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Willie L. Tabor
Willie L. Tabor, 85, of Commerce, died Monday, January 15, 2001.
Mr. Tabor was a native of Banks County. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served as a deacon at King Branch Baptist Church, Carnesville.
Mr. Tabor was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Tabor, and a daughter, Shirley Varnum.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 18, at King Branch Baptist Church with the Rev. James Ramey officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Survivors include three daughters, Gloria Cochran and Andria Lee Tabor, both of Athens, and Evelyn J. Gober, Dacula; and one son, William Van Tabor, Homer.
The family was to have received friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Moss-Stovall-Neal Funeral Home, Toccoa.
Clela F. Thomas
Mrs. Clela Franklin Thomas, 95, of Comer, died Monday, January 15, 2001.
Mrs. Thomas was born April 15, 1905, in Habersham County, a daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson Franklin and the late Lou Beth Nix Franklin.
She was a homemaker and was of the Methodist denomination. Mrs. Thomas was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Isham Thomas. She was the last member of her immediate family.
Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, January 16, at the Thomas Family cemetery with the Rev. James Page officiating.
Survivors include two sons, Aubrey Thomas and Fred Thomas, both of Comer; seven grandchildren, one great-granddaughter and one step-great-granddaughter.

William O. Wilson
William Odell Wilson, 69, of Commerce, died Monday, January 15, 2001, at the V.A. Medical Center.
Mr. Wilson was born July 22, 1931, in Jackson County. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was retired from the Georgia Department of Transportation.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 17, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce. Burial was in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.
Survivors include one son, Johnny Wilson, Commerce; one brother, Russell Wilson, Commerce; two sisters, Virginia Archer, Nicholson, and Jannie Lee Ballenger, Carnesville; one granddaughter, Tonya Wilson, Commerce; and one niece, Betty Collins, Carnesville.

Charles E. Brown
Charles Edwin Brown, 69, of Hamilton, Ind., died Friday, January 12, 2001.
Born in Toccoa, Mr. Brown was a son of the late Paul J. and Mary Adams Brown.
He had been employed with the maintenance department of the Metropolitan schools of Steuben County, Ind., retiring in 1981, and the Gwinnett County schools of Georgia. Mr. Brown also managed the A&W Root Beer Stand, Angola, Ind., from 1966 to 1973, and retired from Walmart, Angola, Ind., in July 2000.
He was a member of Plesant Lake Baptist Church, the Angola Masonic Lodge #236, the Angola Moose Lodge, The Nightcrawlers and was a member of the Angola Fire Department for 11 years.
Mr. Brown was preceded in death by a grandchild, Charles Robert Brown, and a sister, Pauline Dooley.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 17, in the chapel of Brown Funeral Home, Danielsville. Burial was in Meadow Cemetery.
Mr. Brown is survived by his wife, Barbara Nelms Brown; two daughters, Paulette Crile, Stockbridge, and Patricia Rickman, Ashley; one son, Charles Dennis Brown, Clermont, Fla., formerly of Gas City, Tenn.; one sister, Ann Autry, Commerce; one brother, Oris Brown, Commerce; six grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and numerous step-great-grandchildren.
