MR. IRVIN
Mechanic
ELBERTON - Jerry Dale Irvin, 48, formerly of Clarkesville, died Friday, January 19, 2001, at Elberton Memorial Hospital following a sudden illness.
Mr. Irvin was born April 30, 1952, in Habersham County. He was a son of the late Emory Pinkney and Ollie Mae Gunn Irvin.
Mr. Irvin was employed as a mechanic with the Con-Agra Poultry Corp. and was of the Baptist denomination. He was preceded in death by two brothers, James and Maxie Irvin.
Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 21, in the chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home, Cornelia, with the Rev. George Dean officiating.
Survivors include one son, David M. Irvin, Cornelia; three brothers, Charles Irvin, Demorest, Thomas Irvin, Alto, and Bobby Irvin, Boca Raton, Fla.; and one sister, Marvine Dean, Clarkesville.

MRS. CLARK
Homemaker
DEMOREST - Mrs. Rubye Presley Clark, 75, died Friday, January 19, 2001, at her residence following a brief illness.
Mrs. Clark was born Mary 5, 1925, a daughter of the late Jesse and Ethel Carlan Presley.
She was a homemaker and a member of Double Springs Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, January 21, in the chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home, Cornelia, with the Revs. Darryl Dale and Wayne Strickland officiating. Burial was in the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church cemetery.
Mrs. Clark is survived by her husband, J.R. Clark, Demorest; step-daughters, Janice Smith, Clayton, Beverly Pritchett, Clarkesville, and Jean Loggins, Mt. Airy; step-son, Lamar Clark, Mt. Airy; sisters-in-law, Ethelene Presley, Gainesville, Dorothy Stroud, Mt. Airy, and Joyce Strange, Cornelia; nieces, Maurice Dale, Elaine Greene, Helen Peek, Glenda McCommon and Sandra Kiser, all of Gainesville; seven step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren; two great-nieces, Sandi Ferguson, Cornelia, and Kirsten Peck, Gainesville; and six great-nephews, Chuck Dale, Cleveland, Craig Dale, Flowery Branch, and Robert Peek, Ricky Peek, Matthew Greene and Jeff Kiser, all of Gainesville.

COMMERCE - Mrs. Eva Hassie Garrett, 65, died Monday, January 22, 2001, at her residence following an extended illness.
Mrs. Garrett was born January 11, 1936, in Banks County, a daughter of the late Elijah Redmond and Bessie Smith Redmond.
She was a homemaker and a member of New Hope Worship Center, Danielsville.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 25, at New Hope Worship Center with the Revs. Dennis Kesler, Jonathan Randall and Walter Venable officiating. The body will lie in state at the church from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Garrett is survived by her husband, Victor Garrett, Commerce; one son, Ricky Garrett, Commerce; two daughters, Patsy Garrett and Kathy Anderson, both of Commerce; one brother, Richard Redmond, Maysville; two sisters, Molly Parson and Daisy Shubert, both of Maysville; two grandchildren, Chris Garrett and Daniel Anderson, both of Commerce; and one great-grandchild, Ricky D. Garrett, Commerce.
The family was to have received friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce.

MR. WHITWORTH
Carpenter
CORNELIA - Howard E. Whitworth, 68, died Monday, January 22, 2001, at Vencor Hospital following a brief illness.
Mr. Whitworth was born July 29, 1932, in Habersham County, a son of the late Edward C. and Mary Elizabeth Eller Whitworth.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and Navy, serving during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Whitworth was a self-employed carpenter and was a member of Unity Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Houston Whitworth, and four sisters, Beulah Biles, Clarcy Savage, Eunice Grimes and Margie Allen.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 25, in the chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home, Cornelia, with the Revs. Wesley Purcell, Paris Whitworth and Marty Kilby officiating. Burial will be in the Unity Baptist Church cemetery.
Mr. Whitworth is survived by his wife, Rosa Lee Whitworth, Demorest; two daughters, Lisa W. Thomas, Demorest, and Trish Whitworth Wood, Clarkesville; sons and daughters-in-law, Curtis and Sherry Whitworth, Gainesville, and Cliff and Yhana Whitworth, Clarkesville; one brother, the Rev. Paris Whitworth, Clarkesville; two sisters, Ruth Vinson and Grace Gosnell, both of Clarkesville; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

MR. HOLDER
White Plains Baptist Church member
JEFFERSON - Fred Holder, 72, died Tuesday, January 23, 2001, at his residence following an extended illness.
Mr. Holder was born August 16, 1928, in Jackson County, a son of the late William "Doc" and Endie Barrett Holder.
He was a retired truck stop owner and was a member of White Plains Baptist Church. Mr. Holder was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Phillips Holder, and a son, Dale Holder.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, January 25, in the chapel of Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson, with the Rev. Hulon Hill officiating. Burial will be in the White Plains Baptist Church cemetery.
Survivors include three sons, Freddy Holder, Maysville, and Lewis Holder and Larry Holder, both of Atlanta; three daughters, Shirley Medley, Commerce, Brenda Holder, Athens, and Ann Holder, Atlanta; two sisters, Beatrice Varnum, Jefferson, and Eula Jean Whitehead, Danielsville; and six grandchildren.

MR. JUSTUS
World War II veteran
DEMOREST - Grover L. Justus, 77, died Wednesday, January 17, 2001, at Habersham County Medical Center.
Mr. Justus was born June 30, 1923, in Rabun County. He was a son of the late Palmer and Laura Smith Justus.
Mr. Justus was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy, and retired after 34 years as a truck driver. He was preceded in death by a son, Dwight Justus.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 20, at Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel, Demorest, with the Revs. Luther Williams and Leonard Gibbs officiating. Burial was in Yonah Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Justus is survived by his wife, Ruth Gunn Justus, Demorest; one daughter, Minnie Brown, Demorest; three sons, Clay Justus and Johnny Justus, both of Demorest, and Aaron Justus, Homer; one brother, Tom Justus, Tiger; and six grandchildren.

James C. Slay
James Carl Slay, 78, of Comer, died Monday, January 29, 2001.
A native of Oglethorpe County, Mr. Slay was a son of the late Eddie Carlton and Elizabeth Viva Dunn Slay.
He was retired from the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II and the Korean War. Mr. Slay was later employed with the Georgia Farm Bureau and was a member of Collier Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Pleasant Hill Volunteer Fire Department.
Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, January 31, at Collier Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Charles Jenkins officiating. Mr. Slay's nephews served as honorary pallbearers.
Survivors include his wife, Marion Slay; two daughters, Linda Collins and Nancy Graham, both of Comer; four sisters, Nell Seymour, Greenville, S.C., Beulah Fowler, Simpsonville, S.C., Alice Paul, Lexington, and Virginia Overstreet, Gadsden, Ala.; one brother, Monroe Slay, Greenville, S.C.; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Danny M. Sorrow
Danny Morgan Sorrow, 51, of Commerce, died Tuesday, January 23, 2001, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
A native of Greenville County, S.C., Mr. Sorrow was born August 19, 1949, a son of the late James Verner Sorrow and Jenny Standridge Sorrow Waters.
He was a carpenter and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Commerce.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 25, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. John Turlington officiating. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce.
Survivors include one son, Lee Sorrow, Commerce; one daughter, Jennifer Sorrow, Commerce; one brother, Bryan "Huck" Sorrow, Commerce; five step-sisters and one step-brother.

Lula B. Smith
Mrs. Lula Bell Gresham Smith, of Athens, died Friday, January 26, 2001.
A native of Oglethorpe County, Mrs. Smith was a daughter of the late Edd and Minnie Hill Gresham.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Henry Smith, two daughters, Catherine Hunter and Sarah Ann Smith, and four sons, James Hill, Paul Hill, John D. Dowdy and John Henry Smith Jr.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, January 29, at Clarke Grove Baptist Church, Stephens, with the Rev. Willie Harris officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include seven daughters, Sarah McGuire, Statham, Earline Smith, Columbia, S.C., Henrietta Smith and Annie Vincent, both of Athens, Ruby Dowdy, Los Angeles, Calif., Georgia Travis, Atlanta, and Murner Willoughby, Bethlehem; three sons, John Edward Smith, Colbert, Johnny Floyd Smith, Athens, and Joe Henry Smith, Chattanooga, Tenn.; two sisters, Lillian Eberhart and Laura Moore, both of Athens; one brother, Willie Edd Gresham, Forsyth; 23 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Mildred Parten
Mildred Bullock Parten, 68, of Colbert, died Monday, January 29, 2001.
A native of Madison County, Mrs. Parten was a daughter of the late Coke and Mary Pauline McCurly Bullock.
She was a homemaker and seamstress and was of the Baptist denomination. Mrs. Parten was a member of the Liver Foundation.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, February 1, in Colbert cemetery with the Rev. Don Fuller officiating.
Survivors include one daughter, Cindy Williams, Com-merce; one son, Bruce Parten, Winder; two brothers, G.T. "Pete" Bullock, Danielsville, and Paul Bullock, Colbert; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
