Ruth Burroughs
Mrs. Ruth Burroughs, 81, of Hull, died Thursday, February 1, 2001.
A native of Madison County, Mrs. Burroughs was a daughter of the late D.I. and Pinkie Martin Burroughs.
She was a retired seamstress and was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Mrs. Burroughs was preceded in death by a brother, Charlie Burroughs, and a sister, Lillian Waller.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, February 4, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Ray Jenkins officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mrs. Burroughs' nephews will serve as pallbearers.
Survivors include one brother, James Burroughs, Athens; and several nieces and nephews.

Darlene L. Franklin
Miss Darlene Linda Franklin, 42, of Comer, formerly of Elberton, died Wednesday, January 31, 2001.
A native of Louisville, Ky., Miss Franklin was a daughter of Charlene Young Cleveland, Elberton, and the late Don Franklin.
She was a truck driver and was a member of Vans Creek Baptist Church.
Graveside services were held at 4 p.m. Friday, February 2, at Forest Hills Memorial Park.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include her step-father, Windell Cleveland, Elberton; one sister, Audrey Johnson, Elberton; one brother, Chris Cleveland, Elberton; and one niece.

William L. Brock
William Luther Brock, 80, of Commerce, died Thursday, February 1, 2001, at Georgia Veterans Home, Milledgeville.
A native of McMinn County, Tenn., Mr. Brock was a son of the late George and Laura Williams Brock.
He was retired from the U.S. Army, with 22 years of service, and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Inglewood, Tenn. Mr. Brock was also a member of the VFW.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, February 3, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Henry Webb officiating. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce.
Mr. Brock is survived by his wife, Betty Saxon Minish Brock, Commerce; four sons, Carter Brock, Rogersville, Mo., Kerry Brock, Springfield, Mo., Robert Brock, Belton, Texas, and William L. Brock Jr., Madisonville, Tenn.; three daughters, Carolyn Estes and Teresa Thompson, both of Athens, Tenn., and Darla Lord, Champaign, Ill.; step-sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Teresa Minish and Ricky and Angie Minish, all of Commerce; step-daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Charles Fouche, Hull; two sisters, Lee Holland, Miami, Fla., and Sue Middleton, Cape Coral, Fla.; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Henry D. Gunnin
Henry D. Gunnin, 74, of Athens, died Friday, February 2, 2001.
A native of Madison County, Mr. Gunnin was a son of the late David and Etta Dudley Gunnin.
Having made his home in the Athens area, where he lived all of his life, Mr. Gunnin was a self-employed wallpaper contractor for 30 years and was a member of Moon's Grove Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Grace Smith Gunnin.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, February 5, in Evergreen Memorial Park with the Rev. Ray Jenkins officiating.
Mr. Gunnin is survived by his wife, Rosetta Fuller Gunnin; step-daughter, Glenda Culbertson; grandson, Greg Martin, Colbert; and a number of cousins.

Jackson T. Brightwell
Jackson Thomas Brightwell, infant son of Thomas Jackson Brightwell III and Sarah Nanette Starr Brightwell, died Wednesday, January 31, 2001. He was born January 15, 2001.
A private family graveside service was held with burial in Sunset Cemetery, Maxeys.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one sister, Sarah Elizabeth "Ella" Brightwell, 4, of the home; paternal grandmother, Mrs. Juanita George Brightwell, Royston; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Leland E. Starr Jr., Sandy Cross Community; and paternal great-grandmother, Mrs. Evelyn Sanders Brightwell Hunter, Madison.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Thomas J. Brightwell Jr.

Georgia C. Poole
Mrs. Georgia Carithers Poole, 99, of College Park, died Thursday, February 8, 2001.
Born in Madison County, Mrs. Poole was a daughter of the late George Matthew and Lula Smith Carithers.
She was retired from Spartinburg General Hospital, where she worked as a nurse for over 40 years, and was of the Baptist denomination. Mrs. Poole was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Coan Poole.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 10, in Comer cemetery with the Rev. Stewart Lang officiating.
Mrs. Poole is survived by one sister, Hilda Mason, College Park.

Lillie M. Garrison
Mrs. Lillie Mae Parson Garrison, 92, of Homer, died Friday, February 9, 2001, at Scenic View Health Care Center, Baldwin.
A native of Banks County, Mrs. Garrison was born January 5, 1909, a daughter of the late Garnett and Minnie Sheridan Parson. She was the wife of the late O.S. Garrison.
Mrs. Garrison was a member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by two sons, M.E. "Buster" Garrison Sr. and Herbert D. Garrison Sr., and a granddaughter, Ramona Gar-rison.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, February 11, at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church with the Rev. Phil Ferguson, Jerry Payne and the Rev. Jim McLendon officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include one sister, Rose Jones, Homer; grandchildren, Mack E. Garrison, Herbert "Bo" Garrison Jr. and Donna G. Payne, all of Homer, Paulina G. Casper, Maysville, and Oscar S. Garrison II, Hoschton; daughters-in-law, Syble Garrison and Betty G. Strickland, both of Homer; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Veronica Hughes
Mrs. Veronica "Ronnie" Hughes, 75, of Athens, a native of Grand Fork, N.D., died Monday, February 12, 2001.
Mrs. Hughes was the daughter of the late Joseph and Anna Schinider Deitz and the widow of the late John Frank Hughes.
She worked in the shipyards during World War II and later worked at Thomas Textile Manufacturing for a number of years. Mrs. Hughes had made her home in Athens for the past 55 years and was a member of Unity Christian Church, Maysville.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, February 15, in the chapel of Bridges Funeral Home, Athens, with the Rev. Ray Fumea and Linwood Smith officiating. Burial will be at 4:30 p.m. in the Unity Christian Church cemetery with Minister Dennis Harris officiating. Dorsey Campbell, Wesley Hughes, Cecil Highfield, Mark Chancey, Dough Roskam and Frank Strickland Jr. will serve as pallbearers.
Mrs. Hughes is survived by three daughters, Margaret Chancey, Bethlehem, Cindy Childs, Commerce, and Mary Perry, Hull; three sons, Alan W. Hughes, Athens, Ned Hughes, Watkinsville, and Jeff Hughes, Flowery Branch; one brother, LeRoy Deitz, Frazee, Minn.; 13 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family was to have received friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and from 2 p.m. until the time of the service on Thursday.

Roper Pump retiree
COMMERCE - John C. Wofford, 86, died Wednesday, February 14, 2001, at BJC Nursing Home, Commerce.
A native of Banks County, Mr. Wofford was born April 10, 1914, a son of the late James David and Vester Haggard Wofford.
He was retired from Roper Pump Company. Mr. Wofford was preceded in death by a daughter, Jane Watson.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, February 16, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with Jerry Payne officiating. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce.
Mr. Wofford is survived by his wife, Louise Owenby Wofford, Commerce; three sons, Jimmy Bray and Clay Wofford, both of Commerce, and Curtis Wofford, Clayton; five daughters, Alice Colquitt, Lexington, Lou Ann David and Trell Wilson, both of Commerce, Vester Hardman, Athens, and Elaine Rucker, Elberton; one brother, Jessie Wofford, Locust Grove; two sisters, Syble Farmer, Jonesboro, and Agnes Maxwell, Commerce; 18 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

LULA - Mrs. Mary Ruth Smith Martin, 69, died Tuesday, February 6, 2001, at her residence following an extended illness.
A native of Greene County, Mrs. Martin was a daughter of the late Arthur and Lona Saxon Smith.
She was a homemaker and a member of Belton Baptist Church. Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by a son, Zachary Lee Martin, and a sister, Clara Mae Armour.
She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who loved God and her family, said family members.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, February 9, 2001, at Belton Baptist Church with the Revs. Mike Martin, Gary Wilson, Cecil Thomas and Robert Nix officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Martin is survived by her husband, J.L. Martin, Lula; daughters, Judy Harkins, Clermont, Pat Horne and Donna Carpenter, both of Lula, and Shelba Bennett, Mount Airy; son, Mike Martin, Clarkesville; sisters, Beatrice Ferguson, Demorest, and Eugene Smith, Lula; brothers, James Smith, Columbia, S.C., Barney Smith, Baldwin, and Johnny Smith, Gainesville; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
