FLOWERY BRANCH - Mrs. Ruby Gillespie Ward, 83, died Thursday, February 15, 2001.
Mrs. Ward was a native of Jackson County. She was a member of the Fountain of Faith Congregational Holiness Church.
Funeral services were held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, February 18, in the chapel of Flanigan Funeral Home, Buford, with the Revs. Blake Foster and James Vickers officiating. Burial was in the Fountain of Faith Congregational Holiness Church cemetery.
Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Stoy Ward, Flowery Branch; daughters and sons-in-law, Louise and Doyle Foster, Statham, Shirley and David Scogin, Colbert, Pat and Alan Martyn, Athens, and Deborah and Donald Jennings, Flowery Branch; sons and daughters-in-law, Johnny and Jane Ward, Ft. MR. BENTON

COLUMBIA, S.C. - W. James "Jim" Benton, 80, died Friday, February 16, 2001, at Bernardin Hospice House.
Born in Commerce, on November 9, 1920, Mr. Benton was the oldest child of the late Roy and Blanche Gibbs Benton, Commerce.
He had lived in Columbia since 1973 and was retired from the U.S. Army and Defender Services Inc. Mr. Benton was married
to the late Margaret C. Dillard Benton for 52 years.
He joined the U.S. Army in 1942 and retired at the Pentagon in 1972. During that time he served in many locations around the world which included the European and Pacific Theaters of War during World War II. Mr. Benton served in the Korean Conflict in 1950 and 1951.
In 1949, he was promoted from the enlisted rank of Sergeant Major to Warrant Officer in the regular Army. He participated in atomic bomb tests in the Nevada desert in 1953.
Mr. Benton received many military decorations and awards. He was assigned to the diplomatic duties, he served in the U.S. Defense Attaché' offices in the U.S. Embassies in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Khartoum, Sudan in Africa and Paris, France. He performed his duties in the Pentagon and the Washington, DC area, where he was assigned as an instructor in the U.S. Army and U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency attaché' schools.
His last tour of military duty was with the Office of the Inspector General, Defense Intelligence Agency in the Pentagon.
Mr. Benton joined the Defender Services Inc. in Columbia in 1972 and worked there as vice president, administrative until retirement in 1992.
Private services were held.
Survivors include four sisters, Theola B. Samra and Betty Ann Morgan, both of Hapeville, Jeanette Beaver, Montezuma, and Mary Wynn Benton, Athens; seven sisters-in-law; and nieces and nephews.

JEFFERSON - Seth Edward Hunter, 65, died Wednesday, February 21, 2001, at his residence.
A native of Jackson County, Mr. Hunter was born December 1, 1935, a son of the late Sam William and Mary Lenora Casper Hunter.
He was a retired bus driver with the University of Georgia and was a member of Lebanon United Methodist Church, Jefferson. Mr. Hunter was preceded in death by a grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 23, in the chapel of Jackson Funeral Home, Jefferson, with the Rev. Roy Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Lebanon United Methodist Church cemetery.
Mr. Hunter is survived by his wife, Mary Lee Hunter; two sons, Timothy Seth Hunter and Sam William Hunter, both of Jefferson; two sisters, Carolyn Arnold, Athens, and Sammie Harrelson, Hoschton; two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

MR. ISBELL

TALMO - James Monroe Livingston Isbell, 91, died Sunday, February 18, 2001, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Gainesville, following a brief illness.
A native of Jackson County, Mr. Isbell was a son of the late Levis Ebulis Livingston and Daisy Belle Blackstock Isbell.
He was a retired timber and cattle farmer and a retired educator of 42 years, having served with the Jackson County, Hall County, Elbert County and North Carolina school systems. Mr. Isbell was a member of Talmo Baptist Church for 56 years, where he served as a deacon and as a Sunday School teacher. He was also a member of the Georgia Cattleman's Association, the Middle Oconee Soil and Water Association and was a church delegate to the Chattahoochee Baptist Association. Mr. Isbell was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army Medical Corp.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 21, at Talmo Baptist Church with Dr. James Merritt and the Rev. Bill Baker officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Members of the Men's Awareness Sunday School Class served as honorary pallbearers.
Mr. Isbell is survived by his wife, Mary Nelle Langford Isbell, Talmo; one son, James Michael Isbell, LaGrange; two daughters, Cheryl Ann Fletcher, Talmo, and Mary Lynn Orr, Winterville; and six grandchildren.

COMMERCE - Mrs. Myrtle Virginia Mulligan, 72, a homemaker, died Tuesday, February 20, 2001, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce, following an extended illness.
Mrs. Mulligan was born April 15, 1928, in Dekalb County, a daughter of the late Vernon Harrison and Minnie Frances Burton Beard.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, February 22, at Adam's Place Cemetery, located at 530 Neal Road, Commerce. The Revs. David Gregory and Teri Hagwood will officiate.
Survivors include five daughters, Mary Ashley, Camilla, Virginia Fuller, Shady Dale, Deannie Gossett, Thomasville, Dorothy Kimbrell, Commerce, and Dianne Taylor, Pendergrass; one son, John Mulligan, Braselton; 22 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
The body and family are at the residence of daughter, Dorothy Kimbrell, 530 Neal Road, Commerce.

COMMERCE - Tom Watson Swindle, 87, died Monday, February 19, 2001.
A native of Madison County, Mr. Swindle was a son of the late Henry and Elizabeth Fitzpatrick Swindle.
He was retired from Harmony Grove Textiles, with more than 40 years of employment, and was a member of Blacks Creek Primitive Baptist Church. Mr. Swindle was also a member of John H. Jones Masonic Lodge #348, A&FM, Danielsville.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 21, in the chapel of Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, Danielsville, with the Revs. Albert Vaughn and Douglas Duncan officiating. Burial was in Ila Cemetery. Billy Culbertson, Junior Shields, Greg Singleton, Donald Seagraves, Pat Seagraves and Myron Seagraves served as pallbearers.

BUFORD - Jonathan T. Hosch, 32, nephew of Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Hosch, Braselton, died Thursday, February 15, 2001, following a sudden illness.
A native of Gwinnett County, Mr. Hosch was a 1988 graduate of Duluth High School. He was a farmer and a member of New Liberty United Methodist Church, Braselton.
Mr. Hosch was preceded in death by his mother, Mrs. Carolyn Mauldin Hosch, in 1999.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 18, at New Liberty United Methodist Church with the Revs. J.J. Jones and Gaylon Beard officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

AUBURN - James G. Wiley, 83, died Wednesday, February 14, 2001.
Born in Abbeville, S.C., Mr. Wiley had lived in Barrow County for most of his life. He was a son of the late Scott Wiley Sr. and Mollie Tanner Wiley.
Mr. Wiley was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corp., having served during World War II, and was a retiree of Genesco, Lawrenceville. He was a member of Bethabra Baptist Church, Hoschton.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Friday, February 16, in the chapel of Carter Funeral Home, Winder, with the Rev. Terry Hawkins officiating. Burial was in the Bethabra Baptist Church cemetery. ANDERSON, S.C. - Mrs. Vernell Meeks Kelley, 76, died Saturday, February 17, 2001, at her residence.
A native of Anderson, S.C., Mrs. Kelley was born February 24, 1924, a daughter of the late Charlie E. and Eve Culpepper Meeks.
She was retired from White Jones Hardware and was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Temple. Mrs. Kelley was preceded in death by a brother, Bobby Meeks, and four sisters, Odesa Jordan, Ruth Owens, Ola Barnes and Ollie Meeks.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Monday, February 19, at Gethsemane Baptist Temple with the Rev. Sam Duncan officiating. Burial was in New Silverbrook Cemetery, Anderson, S.C.
Survivors include two sons, Johnny Kelley and Steve Kelley, both of Anderson, S.C.; two daughters, Shelby Jean Pruitt and Janie Baxter, both of Starr, S.C.; a special friend, Henry Wilson, Anderson, S.C.; two brothers, Thomas Meeks and Troy Meeks, both of Anderson, S.C.; one sister, Betty Parnell, Anderson, S.C.; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
