FORT WAYNE, IND. - Garland W. Wheeler, 78, died Friday, February 18, 2000, at Laurels Hospital of Dekalb in Butler, Ind.
A native of Commerce, Mr. Wheeler had lived in the DeKalb County area for 49 years.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and had worked as a tool hardener with National Heat Treat Company, with 30 years of service, having retired in 1989. Mr. Wheeler attended Statewood Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Felton, Lloyd and Clifford.
Services were held Monday, February 21, at D.O. McComb & Sons Lakeside Park Funeral Home, Fort Wayne, Ind. Local services were held Wednesday, February 23, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with Robert Flippo officiating. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce.
Survivors include one daughter, Gail Stewart, Fort Wayne, Ind.; one step-son, Calvin Todd, Flowery Branch; five sisters, Vera Wheeler, Commerce, Hazel Culpepper, Warington, Va., Jetteree Hull, Spencerville, Ind., Gwynola "Tootsie" Smitherman, Athens, and Golden Hile, Ashley, Ind.; and two grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

MRS. MCGINNIS
Mother of six
JEFFERSON - Mrs. Annie Williamson McGinnis, 66, died Thursday, March 16, 2000, at her residence following an extended illness.
Mrs. McGinnis was born March 22, 1933, in Jackson County. She was a daughter of Sally Mae Qualls Williamson, Jefferson, and the late Charlie Williamson.
Mrs. McGinnis was a retired poultry processor and was of the Baptist denomination. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl McGinnis, and a brother, David Williamson.
Funeral services were held Sunday, March 19, in the chapel of Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson. Burial was in Woodbine Cemetery, Jefferson. Clayborn Saxon, Matthew Gravely, Paul Crane, John McGinnis, Wallace Evans and Sonny Adams served as pallbearers.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include three sons, Dwight McGinnis, Martinez, Larry Dwayne McGinnis, Jefferson, and Tony McGinnis, Flowery Branch; three daughters, Shirley Gravely, Jefferson, Mary Ann Young, Gainesville, and Linda Crane, Flowery Branch; one sister, Lizzie Belle Beatty, Pendergrass; one brother, James Williamson, Jefferson; and 11 grandchildren.

NICHOLSON - Donald Keith Harris, 35, died Saturday, March 18, 2000.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 21, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Revs. Eddie Cane and Leon Arwood officiating. Burial was in the Mt. Zion Baptist Church cemetery, Suches.
Survivors include his mother and step-father, Connie and Richard Jackson, Nicholson; his father and step-mother, Donald and Ritna Harris, Oakwood; four brothers, Mitchell Jackson, Homer, Jeremey Harris, Commerce, and Chris Harris and Isaiah Harris, both of Oakwood; three sisters, Regina Pilgrim, Commerce, Rhonda Jackson, Jefferson, and Marlena Twiggs, Oakwood; five nieces and five nephews.

COMMERCE - Mrs. Rosie Benton Bird, 98, died Monday, March 20, 2000, at her residence following an extended illness.
Mrs. Bird was born November 17, 1901, in Banks County. She was a daughter of the late Wiley Benton and Maggie Ingram Benton.
Mrs. Bird was a retired seamstress with Blue Bell Inc., Commerce, and was a member of Rogers Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Neri Esli Bird.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 23, at Rogers Baptist Church with the Rev. Carlton Peters officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Survivors include one daughter, Mary Nell Segraves, Commerce; two brothers, Ollie Benton and Vernon Benton, both of Commerce; and several nieces and nephews.

NICHOLSON - William T. Chester, 82, died Tuesday, March 21, 2000, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Chester was born August 24, 1917, in Johnson County. He was a son of the late Isaac Tillman and Lula Vaden Brantley Chester.
Mr. Chester was a retired carpenter and was a member of the Nicholson Congregational Holiness Church. He was preceded in death by a son, Isaac Thomas Chester.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 23, at the Nicholson Congregational Holiness Church with the Revs. Dennis Kesler, H.L. Moore and Howard Rhodes officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Burial will be in the Nicholson Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Cathel Mae Palmer Chester; four sons, Kenneth Christopher Chester, Jefferson, Oral Chester, Comer, and Ray LaVaughn Chester and William Randall Chester, both of Nicholson; four daughters, Pamelia Jan Daniel, Catherine Phyllis Vaughn and Wanda Elizabeth Weldon, all of Nicholson, and Barbara Jean Wilson, Watkinsville; one brother, Harrison Chester, Virginia; one sister, Mildred Ollis, Atlanta; 25 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

ATHENS - Mrs. Pearl Stamey Ward, 81, died Sunday, March 19, 2000.
A native of Jackson County, Mrs. Ward was a daughter of the late Harry Lenton and Ruby Kittle Fields.
She retired from Athens General Hospital in 1982 and was a member of Sun Light Baptist Church.
Mrs. Ward was preceded in death by her first husband, William Francis Stamey, her second husband, Drennan Durell Ward, two sons, Charles W. Stamey and James E. Stamey, two brothers, Jonnie C. Fields and Harry E. "Gene" Fields, and a sister, Ruby Nell Atkins.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 24, in the chapel of Bridges Funeral Home, Athens, with the Rev. Dan Corbett officiating. Burial will be in Nizpah Cemetery. Mrs. Ward's grandsons will serve as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers.
Survivors include four daughters, Virginia Stamey Anthony, Athens, Nettie Stamey Smith, Bryon, Peggy Stamey, Colbert, and Patricia Stamey Warner, Augusta; two sons, Frank Stamey, Stafford, Va., and Roy L. Stamey, Saudi Arabia; three sisters, Ellie Mae Shedd and Virginia Ann Grammer, both of Macon, and Frances Ophelia Horne, Cochran; two brothers, Thomas "Buddy" Fields, Oxford, and Charles T. Fields, Ila; three step-sons, two step-daughters, 27 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, one uncle and a number of nieces and nephews.

COMMERCE - Mrs. Cora Elizabeth Tankersley, 53, formerly of Cumming, died Monday, March 20, 2000.
Mrs. Tankersley was born in Cullman, Ala. She had been employed at Corporate Printing, Cumming.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 23, in the chapel of L.W. McDonald & Son Funeral Home, Cumming.
Survivors include her husband, Robert Tankersley; daughter and son-in-law, Misty and Shane Kirby, Cumming; one son, Robby Tankersley, Commerce; one sister, Sandy Jeffries, Dallas; and one granddaughter, Taylor Kirby, Cumming.

Mrs. Lord was born July 6, 1937, in Jackson County. She was a daughter of the late Walter and Lucy Ayers Brooks.
Mrs. Lord was a homemaker and a member of Family Worship Center.
Funeral services were held Sunday, March 19, in the chapel of Jackson Funeral Home, Jefferson, with the Rev. Jeff Burt officiating. Burial was in the Talmo Baptist Church cemetery.

HOMERVILLE - John Verdell Savage, 78, formerly of Habersham County, died Monday, March 20, 2000, at Clinch County Hospital following an extended illness.
Mr. Savage was born in Habersham County, a son of the late John Thomas Savage and Bertie Mae Whitworth.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II, and was of the Baptist denomination.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 23, in the chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home, Cornelia, with the Revs. Paris Whitworth, Donnie Elliott, Curtis Woods and Autry Gosnell officiating. Burial will be in the Unity Baptist Church cemetery.

MADISON, TENN. - Henry Wiley McEver, 92, died Sunday, March 19, 2000, at Tennessee Christian Medical Center.
Mr. McEver was born April 15, 1907, in Banks County. He was a son of the late Jake and Carrie Bruce McEver.
Mr. McEver was a retired pipe fitter and was a member of Silver Spring Baptist Church, Mt. Juliet, Tenn. He was preceded in death by his wife, Katharine Wagner McEver.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 22, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Revs. Russ Stevens, Charles Hamlin and Al Adams officiating. Burial was in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.
Survivors include one son, Billy Rozerl, Madison, Tenn.; one daughter, Lucille Barrett, Madison, Tenn.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
