Rev. John Mullins
Rev. John J. Mullins, age 58 of the Hill City community. passed Thursday morning, Feb. 4, 2010 at North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Survivors include his wife, Darlene Mullins, Hill City; step-mother, Pauline Mullins, Jasper; son and daughter-in-law, Jeremy and Marjorie Mullins, Fort Drum, N.Y.; daughters and son-in-law, Shena and Eric Wilmarth and Rachel Mullins, all of Jasper; brother, Bill Mullins, Jasper; sister and brother-in-law, Mary Ruth and Reggie Weaver, Ellijay; and grandchildren, Makayla and Jared Angel and Jesse, Cameron and Elizabeth Mullins.
The funeral service was held Sunday, Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. from County Line Baptist Church with the Revs. James Sanders, Hershel Ledford and Ralph Harper officiating. iIntermentfollowed in the church cemetery with Pickens Star Lodge #220 in charge of the Masonic graveside service. Pallbearers were: Bill, William and Alan Mullins, Danny Buchanan, Greg Davis and Eugene Bruce. Honorary pallbearers were: Jesse and Cameron Mullins and Makayla and Jared Angel. C.J. Mulkey
Mr. C.J. Mulkey, age 61 of Augusta, Ga. and formerly of Tate, passed early Saturday morning, Feb. 6, 2010 at the Veterans Medical Center-Downtown in Augusta.
Mr. Mulkey was an Army veteran having served with the 173rd Airborne Division in Vietnam from 1968-1970 and honorably discharged in 1974.
Survivors include his wife, Shelia Hall Mulkey, Augusta; daughters and sons-in-law, Becky Estes, Jasper, Shannon and Brad Hill, Homer, Ga., Shawna and Roger Levine, Watkinsville Ga., and Brandie and Daniel Rogers, Ellijay; brothers, Kenneth and Mark Mulkey, both of Tate; sisters, Jean and Roy Roberts, Tate, Helen and Alan Roland, Ranger, and Susan Mulkey, Jasper; second mother, Irene Anderson; his cats, Alex and PeeWee; and his beloved dog, Arttie. Nine grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cleadus and Clewell Mulkey; brother, Buddy Mulkey; and sisters, Deborah and Evelyn Mulkey.
The funeral service was held Monday, Feb. 8 at 2 p.m. from Gospel Temple in Ball Ground with the Rev. A.W. Denise Martin
Ms. Denise Higgins Martin, age 50 of Jasper, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010 at her residence.
Ms. Martin was employed in the retail business and was an active member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Jasper. Denise loved animals and needlepoint.
She was preceded in death by her father, O.A. Higgins; her twin sister, Diane Scott; and her grandparents, Ed and Dessie Spain. Survivors include her mother and step-father, Jean and Michael Hogue; and sister, Becky Higgins. Numerous other relatives and friends also survive.
The funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4 from Mt. Charlie Cochran
Charlie Arnold Lee Cochran of Cartersville died Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010.
Mr. Cochran was born Feb. 29, 1917 in Fannin County, the son of Fred and Kansas Cochran. He was a US Army veteran of World War II and was a mechanic for over 40 years. He loved raising a garden, fishing and hunting. He lived in the Center Community in Cartersville and was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Ludville, Ga. Mr. Cochran was a beloved father and grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nellie Mae Cochran; his parents; two infant sons, Donald and Richard; brother, Cecil Cochran; and sisters, Essie Rogers, Ella Roy and Ora Eads. He has one surviving sister, Ruby Nelson of Washington State.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Robert Henry and Latrice Cochran, Cartersville; grandchildren Robert Lee and Julie Cochran, Clint and Bridget Cochran and Tifney Deputy and Jason Neal; and great-grandchildren, Tyler and Alex Cochran, Elijah and Adam Deputy and Ruby Cochran.
The funeral service was held Wednesday, Feb. 10 at 2 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church in Ludville, Ga. Burial was in the church cemetery. Owen Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Morris Haygood
Morris “Mousey” Haygood, age 69 of Canton, passed away on Monday, Sept. 27, 2010 at his residence.
Morris was a member of High Shoals Baptist Church in Dawsonville.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Haygood; survivors include his children, Michael Haygood, Cumming, David Greene, Canton, Donna Holcombe, Talking Rock, Vickie Blackwell, Jasper, and Stanley Haygood, Canton; and brother, Tommy Lee Haygood. Eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive.

Donald Enis
Donald Floyd Enis, age 74 of Jasper, passed away Oct. 2, 2010.
Don was born July 26, 1936 in Waldren, Ar. to James Clayton and Eula Mae Enis. He was raised in Wilburton, Ok. along with his brothers and sisters. Don was best known as a teacher and coach. He began his career at Gaston High School in Alabama. Over the years, he taught and coached at Coosa High School and Armuchee High School in Rome, Ga. as well as Pickens County High School for several years.
He was the founding director of the Pickens County Recreation Department. Later in his career, he was the principal of Tate Elementary School and the superintendent of Pickens County Schools. He retired from his long career in education from North Georgia RESA in Ellijay, Ga.
Don was the teacher of the Sam Tate Sunday School class and a devoted member of the Tate United Methodist Church. He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. He loved being a member of the Pickens County community where he made his home for more than 40 years.
Survivors include his wife, Gertrude C. Enis; daughters, Donna Enis, Kathy (Mike) Westbrook, Terri (Al) Lawson and Jennifer (Trent) Cluley, all of Jasper, and Lori (Nathan) Keller, Cumming; step-daughters, Sharon (Jerry) Watkins, Ellijay, and Kay (Steve) Lawrence, Jasper; step-son, Greg Cochran, Jasper; and grandchildren, Brian and Andrew Westbrook, Will, Ali and Clay Lawson, Aisling and Sosonna Cluley, Hillary, Jack and Annie Keller, Joel and Michael Silvers, Jessica and Nick Patterson and Lauren Cochran. Three great-grandchildren also survive.

Helen Dickerson
Helen Tatum Dickerson, age 70, passed away on Sept. 22, 2010.
The daughter of the late Buck and Frances Tatum of Talking Rock, Ga., Helen is survived by her husband, Bob; a brother, Robert Tatum; sisters Teresa Abernathy and Lynnette Whitley; a niece and several nephews.
A memorial service was held on Thursday, Sept. 30 at the Horis A Ward Chapel in Stone Mountain, Ga. The Rev. Ron Cole officiated. Sarah Maddox
Mrs. Sarah Maddox, age 91, passed away peacefully at home in Nashville, Tn. on Sept. 11, 2010. Sarah was a long-time resident and business owner in Jasper. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marshall Maddox in 1971.
Marshall and Sarah moved to Jasper in 1954. Together they opened and operated the Jasper Theatre until the 1980s (61 Main is now in the building). At that time she sold the business and retired to California.
Sarah was very involved in the community and an active member of the Jasper United Methodist Church and the UMW for many years. Friends have shared that Sarah was always ready to help others by driving them to the doctor, to run errands, to the airport or for a visit with family that was far away. She made it possible for many to travel and to visit places they otherwise would not have been able to visit.
Sarah was one of the first Navy WAVES during WWII. She was stationed in New York and at the Atlanta Naval Station during her service.
Continuing her history of service, Sarah donated her body to Vanderbilt University Medical School. She struggled with rheumatoid arthritis in her later years. It was her hope that information could be obtained from her that would help someone else in the future.
Sarah is survived by her daughters, Katherine Maddox, Nashville, Tn., and Kay and Ed Dupont, Niceville, Fl. She had one granddaughter, Kristy Jo Jensen, Sacramento, Ca. Locally, she is survived by her niece, Jean and Ronnie Ray, Jasper, Ga., and her nephew, David (Buddy) Elliott, Franklin, Ga. Many other nieces and nephews also survive.
A memorial service was held at Arlington United Methodist Church in Nashville on Tuesday, Sept. 14. Those who knew Sarah know that she was very specific about her wishes. Therefore, her family has asked for memorial gifts to the Jasper United Methodist Church or to Pickens Animal Rescue.

J. Wayne Walker
J. Wayne Walker of Suwanee, Ga., died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010 at the Emory John’s Creek Hospital in John’s Creek, Ga., following a period of declining health.
Born Sept. 19, 1932 in an oil camp outside of Barnsdall, Ok., he was the son of the late John and Effie Oldham Walker. Mr. Walker graduated from Georgia State University in 1958 with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. He worked in the oil industry for 35 years and retired from Phillips Petroleum Company while living in Bartlesville, Ok.
Wayne and his wife Jo Ann moved to Jasper, Ga. in 1998 and recently move to Suwanee, Ga. to be closer to their daughter, Lori Bergquist. His hobbies included golf, piloting airplanes and traveling with his wife of 59 years.
Over the years, Wayne and Jo Ann also lived in Atlanta, Ga., Raleigh, N.C., Baltimore, Md., Tulsa, Ok., Kansas City, Ks. and Minneapolis, Mn.
Besides his wife and their daughter, Lori (Andy) Bergquist, John’s Creek, Wayne is survived by son, Terry (Sue) Walker, Odessa, Tx., and daughter, Cathy (Steve) Keiser, Denver, Co. He was grandpa to Kendrick Morrison, Detroit, Mi., Sarah (Nathan) Beiriger, Evergreen, Co., Daniel Walker, Odessa, Tx., Rachel Morrison, Denver, Co., Kris (Elizabeth) Walker Lubbock, Tx., and Garrett, Abby and Blake Bergquist, of John’s Creek. Wayne was also great-grandpa to five great-grandchildren.
At his request, Wayne was cremated and a memorial service was held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 2 from New Lebanon Presbyterian Church in Jasper where he and Jo Ann are members. The Rev. Ronald MacGregor
Mr. Ronald Allen MacGregor, age 72 of Jasper and formerly of Dawsonville, passed away at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta early Monday morning, Sept. 27, 2010.
Survivors include his son, Troy MacGregor, Eustis, Fl.; daughters and son-in-law, Tracie and Lee Malone, Chatsworth, Kellie Miller, Jasper, and Karrie Williams, Griffin; and brother, Edgar MacGregor, Buffalo, Mi; Ten grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held at 12 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 30 from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home. A graveside service followed Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at Georgia National cemetery near Canton with Chaplin Victor Wallace, Marine Corps, Dawson County #970 and Pickens County Chapter #47 DAV in charge of military graveside services. Pallbearers were: Troy MacGregor, Lee, Cody and Dalton Malone, Ken Allston and Frank Booth. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Jasper United Methodist Church in his memory.
Bessie Stone
Miss Bessie Stone, age 82 of Heritage Health Care Center, passed Friday evening, Oct. 1, 2010 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital, Jasper.
Survivors are close friends Carolyn and Bart Padgett, Jasper.
A graveside service was held Sunday, Oct. 3 at 4 p.m. at Bethel Church cemetery in the Big Ridge area of Pickens County. Cagle Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Aileen Prince
Ms. Aileen Prince, age 75, passed away August 5, 2010.
Ms. Prince was a teacher for 37 years. She taught at Pickens High School in the 1970s.
The service was held Monday, August 9 from Lebanon Baptist Church in Plains, Ga. iIntermentfollowed in the church cemetery.
Chester Payne
Long-time Big Canoe resident Chester “Chet” B. Payne passed away Sept. 27, 2010 after a long and valiant battle against cancer. He was born Jan. 18, 1928.
Chet, a Virginia native and a University of Virginia graduate, was a nationally recognized expert in the aeronautical engineering industry. He married
the love of his life, Jean Lee Payne”, on August 16, 1950.
Chet began his career with NASA at Langley Field in 1950 testing gust loads and autopilot response. He then worked for Martin Aircraft Company testing aircraft including P-6Ms and B-57s before moving on to Lockheed where he was Division Manager for Flight Testing. He was involved with the testing of numerous aircraft including the C-5A, many versions of the C-130, the Lockheed Jetstar and the vaunted F-22s. During his years in the industry, his work took him to over 100 military bases carrying out his test flight assignments. He participated directly in the flight of the latest aircrafts, often serving as flight crew member and test flight engineer. In 1974, he was awarded the Certificate of Merit by the Air Force Systems Command for the successful launch of an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile from a C-5A. Chet is the 1985 recipient of the Kelly Johnson Annual Award for excellence in service given by the Society for Flight Test Engineers. It is on display in the National Air and Space Museum at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. While Chet enjoyed a distinguished career, he was a gentle and unassuming man who never sought attention for himself.
Chet retired from Lockheed in 1991; however, his career did not end there. After he and Jean built a home in Big Canoe on a mountain lake, where she was the designer and general contractor, Chet was called on often as a consultant through his own private company. Jean traveled with him on many assignments. However, Chet also became a valued member of the multi-denominational Big Canoe Chapel, serving as a member of the Board of Trustees and as Chairman of that Board. He was a long-time member of the Prevent Child Abuse Pickens Board of Directors and he served on many community and church committees and boards.
Much of Chet’s work as a consultant was classified, but it is correct to say that his help was requested from the Pentagon and even from the CIA. After he became too ill to travel, agencies sent representatives to his Big Canoe home to seek his advice and expertise.
In an article in 2002, Chet laughed about the time when he needed to get flight qualified for a C-130 flight testing assignment from the Pentagon. He was 76 years old and showed up at the Flight Surgeon’s office at Wright-Patterson AFB one morning. He was in line with young men with cropped haircuts. When it was his turn, the doctor looked at Chet, did a double-take, and asked, “What do you want?”
Chet handed him his orders and said, “I want a flight certificate.”
“How old are you?” the doctor asked.
“What difference does that make?” Chet responded.
“Well, none – I just want to tell my wife about this,” the doctor said. “But tell me – how many medications are you taking?”
Chet said, “One baby aspirin a day.”
“Carry on!” the doctor told him.
In addition to Jean, his wife of 60 years, Chet Payne is survived by three daughters, Jennifer Forster, Jill Dunlap and Starr Lindsey and her husband Mark; grandchildren, Mary Shertenlieb, Amanda Forster, John Dunlap, Harry Forster III, Payne Lindsey, Banks Lovett, Chesler Lindsey and Mason Lindsey; and great-grandchildren, Henry Chester Shertenlieb and Maxwell Gary Shertenlieb. Two siblings also survive, Amanda Hall, Scottsville, Va., and Randolph Payne, Arlington, Va. Many beloved nieces and a nephew and their dear children and grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held at Big Canoe Chapel on Friday, Oct. 1 at 11:30 a.m. A memorial reception followed in the Broyles Community Center. The Rev. Dr. Jimmy R. Allen officiated and Sen. Johnny Isaacson, long-time friend of the family, also delivered a eulogy. There was no visitation and no interment.
