Marcelle Burgess
Mrs. Marcelle E. Burgess, age 81 of Fairmount, Ga., departed this life Friday afternoon, Oct. 8, 2010 at the Gordon Hospital in Calhoun surrounded by her loving family. Marcelle was born Sept. 15, 1929 in Gordon County, Ga., a daughter of the late John Wesley and Inez Hamrick Evans. She was also preceded in death by her great-grandchildren, Emily and Molly Caylor; special loved ones, Charlie H. Goble, Glenn and Carl Yancey.
Marcelle was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great- grandmother and a friend to so many. She was the oldest member of Ranger Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Paul Burgess Sr., Fairmount; son and daughter-in-law, Paul Jr. and Tara Burgess, Calhoun; daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Lamar Caylor, Smyrna, Ga., Paula and Danny Taylor, Adairsville, Ga., Joy and Jim Dodd and Pam and Steven McGlamery, all of Fairmount; sisters-in-law, Ruth Roland, Jasper, Faye Weeks, Jacksonville, Fl., and Gladys Harris, Carrolton, Ga.; grandchildren, Dan and Tundra Taylor, Will Taylor, Marc and Heather Caylor, Evan and Rebecca Caylor, Marilyn and Johnnie Coats, Jayme Dodd, Kristl McGlamery, Steve McGlamery, Trey Burgess, Rhett Burgess, Ryan Burgess; great-grandchildren, Wes Taylor, Braxton Coats, Braeden Coats, Miranda Caylor; and special loved one, Phyllis Lacey of Ellijay.
A service to celebrate her life was held Monday, Oct. 11 at 2 p.m. from Ranger Baptist Church with the Revs. Davis Lacey and Eddy Hensley officiating. She was laid to rest in the Fain Cemetery. Pallbearers were her grandsons.
Emily Adler
Emily Wilk Adler died on Jan. 24, 2010, at her daughter’s home in Bent Tree, Jasper, Ga. She was 103 years, 5 months old.
Mrs. Adler was born in Hamburg, Germany, on August 30, 1906 and came to the United States in 1926. She married
Hans Adler in Chicago in 1929 and they had two daughters. After her husband died in 1975, she moved to Atlanta to be near one of her daughters. For more that 20 years she lived at KingsBridge Retirement Home where she established the library and took part in many activities.
Mrs. Adler founded the Atlanta chapter of the American Recorder Society. She was active in Life Enrichment Services, the League of Women Voters, the Citizens Advisory Council on Energy (charter member) and the Unitarian-Universalist Congregation of Atlanta.
Mrs. Adler is survived by her two daughters, Marianne Beck (Walter E.), Waverly, Ia., and Nancy Davis (Monte V.), Bent Tree; and two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Her husband and a grandson preceded her in death.
The body was cremated; burial will be in Chicago at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Georgia Mountains Hospice, 70 Caring Way Jasper, Ga. 30143. Byars Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Cumming, Ga. in charge of arrangements.
Bonita Giddens
Mrs. Bonita “Bonnie” Bryant Giddens, age 50 of Ball Ground, Ga., died Friday, Jan. 22, 2010.
Survivors include her son, Justin Giddens, Buford, Ga.; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Dwight and Barbara Bryant, Ball Ground, and Terry and Sheila Bryant, Marietta, Ga. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held Sunday, Jan. 24 at 4 p.m. from the Chapel of Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home in Kennesaw with the Rev. Grant Wade officiating. Burial followed in Pine Ridge Memorial Park cemetery in Kennesaw.
Viola Stoner
Viola Stoner, age 88 of Ball Ground, Ga., passed away Jan. 25, 2010 at Grandview Health Care.
Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and Bob Dean, Marietta, and Jobyna and Buddy Stansel, Jasper; grandchildren, Vicki Sickles, Columbus, Oh., Jackie West, Holly Springs, Robert Dean, Marietta, and Anthony Burger, Chatsworth; and great-grandchildren, Morgan West, Holly Springs, and Christopher Sickles, Columbus, Oh.

Bobby Herndon
Mr. Bobby Herndon, age 44 of Jasper, passed early Tuesday morning, Jan. 26, 2010 at Northside Hospital-Cherokee in Canton.
Survivors include his wife, Lynn Herndon, Jasper; daughters, Kathy Wofford and Tim, Tate, Stephanie Wofford and Chris, Jasper, and Deanna Wofford and Josh, White, Ga.; brothers, Johnny Herndon, Talking Rock, and Ricky Herndon, Jones Mountain area; sisters, Carolyn Patterson, Ellijay, and Betty Kelley, Ranger; and grandchildren, Aaliyah, Clay and Madison Wofford and Charlie King.
The funeral service was held Thursday, Jan. 28 at 2 p.m. from Town Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Terry Dean, DJ Free, Buck Parker and Lamar Cantrell officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Talking Rock Baptist Church cemetery with Pickens Star Lodge #220 in charge of the masonic graveside service. Betty Hannah
Betty Joyce (Powers) Hannah passed away peacefully on Jan. 26, 2010 at the age of 76 after a long battle with MDS. Betty was born in Anderson, S.C. and was brought up in Seneca, S.C. She moved to the Atlanta area (Dunwoody) in 1977, where she continued her incredible talent as an interior decorator which had served her well during previous years while living in the Carolinas. Betty and her husband Dave were married
in Atlanta in 1979 and currently reside in Alpharetta, Ga. where they have been retired for several years. They enjoyed spending time in the Jasper/Dawsonville area where they spent many leisurely days at their mountain top country home amongst good neighbors in addition to the many friends and neighbors they cherished who live in the Atlanta area. Betty enjoyed attending Sunday services at the Roswell United Methodist Church prior to her MDS affliction.
Betty is survived by her husband Dave (David); son, Michael Moody (wife Marian), Tybee Island, Ga.; daughter, Jane Walker, Marietta; and two grandchildren, Zoe and Cole Walker. She is also survived by two step-children, Daniel Hannah, Miami, Fl., and Mark Hannah, Rome, Ga., and their respective families.
The funeral service was held at Roswell United Methodist Church Chapel on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 11 a.m. under the direction of the Rev. James Forrest
Mr. James W. Forrest, Sr., age 76 of Round Rock, Tx., passed away on Jan. 15, 2010 at his residence after a long battle with lung cancer.
Born in Pickens County, he was the son of the late Granville and Eva Shipman Forest. He was preceded in death by his brothers, William, John and Larry Forest.
Survivors include, Betty Forrest; daughters, Patricia and Peggy Forrest; son, James W. Forrest, Jr.; grandsons, Steven and Michael Foster; great-grandson, Clayton Foster, all of Round Rock, Tx.; sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Howell Stenger, Jasper; sister, Martha Mobley, Alpharetta; brother, Tracy Forest, Mineral Bluff; Jeannette Forest and Joella Forest, Jasper, Mickey Forest, Georgetown, Tx., as well as several nieces and nephews.
At his request, Mr. Forrest was cremated and a family service was held at the residence of Mickey Forest on Saturday, Jan. 23 in Georgetown, Tx. His remains will be returned to Burnt Mountain at a later date.
Coy Holcomb, Sr.
Mr. Coy Marshall Holcomb, Sr., age 90 of Ball Ground, died Monday, March 1, 2010.
Mr. Holcomb was born April 16, 1919 in Ball Ground to Earby Wyatt and Flossie Ridings Holcomb. He was the eldest of seven children. Coy graduated from Canton High School in 1936. Coy served in WW II as Army Sergeant, Headquarters Company 2nd Battalion 594th Engineer Boat & Shore Regiment, Pacific Theater through Jan. 1, 1946, where he received decorations and citations. He was a long time icon of the Ball Ground community where he worked in the post office as clerk then was promoted to postmaster and retired with 42 years of civil service. After retirement he worked at Advance Security of Georgia Marble Company for 17 years. He was a member of Conns Creek Baptist Church. Coy enjoyed bird watching and showing bantam chickens, and he was an avid reader.
He was preceded in death by his infant sons, Rhett and Jeremy Holcomb. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Ernestine Caylor Holcomb; children, Cheryl Hancock, Canton, Melody (Rev. Alan) Day, Wyatt (Michelle) Holcomb, Eric (Tracey) Holcomb, Edie (Karl) Koller and Ashley (Jenny) Holcomb, all of Ball Ground, Coy Marshall, Jr. (Hilda Grace) Holcomb, Free Home, Yvette (Dr. Bob) Eddy, Macedonia, April (Jay) Hamby, Hickory Flat, and Holly (Tim) Trammell, Woodstock; sister, Hazel Wyatt Atlanta; and grandchildren, Whitney and Andrew Hancock, Brett Day, Rhett (Gail) Day, Emily and Kyle Holcomb, Aaron and Grant Eddy, Emma, Elise and Ellie Holcomb, Hayden, Bryan and Lilly Holcomb, Chandler and Chase Hamby, Ashton Henson, Mason and Karli Koller, Ridings, Justice, Bowen, Carsten and Bella Jane Holcomb.

James Goodwin, Jr.
James Goodwin, Jr., age 86, passed away Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at Northside Hospital-Cherokee.
Mr. Goodwin retired from Coca Cola and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Goodwin, Canton; sons, Edward Goodwin, Jasper, and Larry Goodwin, Dawsonville; daughter, Martha Pruitt, Canton; brothers, Leon Goodwin, Fairmount, Bobby Lee Goodwin, Canton, and Clarence Goodwin, Ellijay; and sister, Ella Mae Goodwin. Seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Buddy Garrett
Mr. Buddy Garrett, age 50 of the Hill City Community, passed early Sunday morning. Feb. 28, 2010 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital in Jasper.
Survivors include his fiancee, Ceccy McCard, Hill City; son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Ashley DeBord, Hill City; daughter, Samantha Garrett, Canton; brothers, Willie Garrett, Jasper, and Jeff and Johnny Garrett, Hill City; sisters, Connie Hutson, Talking Rock, and Diane Cook, Louisville, Ky.; and grandchildren, Tyler Siniard, Justin and Autumn Dunn and Angel DeBord.
The funeral service was held Wednesday, March 3 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Rev. William Turner
Mr. William Frank Turner, Sr., age 86 of Ball Ground, passed away Saturday, March 6, 2010.
He was a member of Amicalola Baptist Church. He was an Army Veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his first, wife Gladys Turner.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Matie Turner, Ball Ground; children, George and Denise Cole, Cumming, Frank and Sharon Turner, Ball Ground, Janice Carpenter and Robert Hedrick, Dawsonville, Doug and Tami O’Bryant and Luke and Tammy Turner, all of Ball Ground. Sixteen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and several nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

Ralph Payne
Ralph Floyd Payne, age 84 of Talking Rock, Ga., passed at his residence early Wednesday, March 3, 2010.
Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, R.L. Payne, Waleska and Randall and Geraldine Payne and Jerry Lee and Jerrie Payne, all of Talking Rock; daughter, Katherine Mashburn, Jasper; brothers, Albert and Clinton Payne, both of North Carolina; and sister, Alice Payne, Jasper. Twelve grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren also survive. Mr. Payne was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Payne; parents, William and Armenda Payne; daughter. Maryann Southerland; sisters, Mammie Bains and Lily Leanord; and brothers, Arthur Ed and Homer Payne.

Ruby Milton
Ruby Bunch Milton of Marietta, Ga. passed away March 2, 2010 in Tampa, Fl. following a lengthy illness.
Ruby was born in Blaine, Ga. and retired after 34 years with Lockheed Martin in Marietta. She will be fondly remembered as a kind, gracious and loving mother and wife.
Survivors include her son, Jerry Milton, Sr.; daughter-in-law, Maribel Milton; sister, Marcille Gartrell; and grandchildren, Kathy Dunn and husband, Steve and Jerry Milton, Jr.
Ruby was preceded in death by her first and second husbands, Goss Milton and Robert Bagwell.

Mrs. Richelle Chance Hulgan, age 34 of 2161 Swan Bridge Road, Talking Rock, passed away Sunday morning, March 7, 2010 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital following a sudden illness.
She is survived by her husband, Johhny Hulgan, Talking Rock; son, Andrew Chance, Talking Rock; mother and father, Steve and Barbara Chance, Talking Rock; sister, Jessica Chance, Talking Rock; and brothers, Eddie Chance, Talking Rock, and Mark Chance, Alabama.

James Robertson
Mr. James Frederick Robertson, age 78 of Bent Tree, passed away March 8, 2010 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital. Mr. Robertson was a US Veteran serving as a US Naval Pilot. He retired from Delta as a captain with over 30 years of service.
He is survived by his wife, Irene Robertson, Bent Tree; daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and Joseph Little, Fairmount, and Dawn Robertson Hartel and Jeff Hartel; sons and daughter-in-law: James Douglas and Mary Robertson, Snellville, Ga., and William Scott Robertson, Forest Park; grandchildren, Rachel and Sarah Robertson, Athens, Sgt. James Little, El Paso, Tx., and Blaine and Marilee Harter, both of Marietta, Ga.; and sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Bill Lowell, Albuquerque, N.M.
