Mrs. Betty Sue Fountain King of Calhoun, Ga. passed away Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010. She is survived by her children, Vicki Schmidt, Marietta, Greg and Gary Burgess, Jasper, and Aubrey King, Jr., Resaca; brother, Ricky Fountain, Jasper. A graveside services was held at 3 p.m. Sunday from the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Roper Funeral Home.
Larry Lance
Mr. Larry Dean Lance, age 59 of Talking Rock, Ga., passed away Saturday, February 20, 2010 at his home.
He is survived by his children, Shane Lance, Talking Rock, Lisa Lance Morgan, Jasper, Jason Lance, Talking Rock, Jesse, Austin and Daniel Lance, all of Ellijay; uncle, Dennis Lance, Nelson; and aunt, Susie Densmore, Nelson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Grady and Stella Lance; and sister, Shirley Davis.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Monday from the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with the Rev. David Herring officiating. iIntermentfollowed in the Keetor Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Roper Funeral Home.
Neil Free
Mr. Neil Blanton Free, age 86 of Canton, Ga., died Friday, Feb. 19, 2010 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital.
Mr. Free was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church in Jasper and retired from Canton Textile Mills.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Floyd O’Bryant, Canton; sons and daughters-in-law, Danny and Martha Free, Jasper, and Randy and Patsy Free, Union Point, Ga.; brothers, Max, Bill and Gene Free, all of Jasper, and Leon Free, Gainesville, Ga.; and sisters, Louise Chumley and Marcell Thacker, both of Jasper. Seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren also survive.

Charles Gentry
Mr. Charles Kenneth Gentry, age 64 of Talking Rock, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Wilson Gentry; and mother, Iva Bannister.
Survivors include his fiancee, Linda Cagle, Talking Rock; daughters and son-in-law, Gail and Victor Franco, Dallas, Tx., and Kathy Pacheco, Ball Ground; grandchildren, Marissa and Lucino Kenneth Pacheco and Jessica and Austin Franco; brother and sister-in-law, Marlon and Mary Gentry, Ball Ground; sister, Blondie Bannister, Ball Ground; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Doris and David Dean and John and Beck Wilson, all of Ball Ground, Betty and Tommie Dean, Canton, Dixie Byers and Darlene and Tommy Fountain, all of Jasper, and Eunice and Gary McCoy, Cartersville. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Ollie Higgins
Ollie Mae Higgins, age 87 of Canton, formerly of Dawsonville, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010 at Signature Healthcare of Buckhead following a period of declining health.
Born April 24, 1922 to the late Bud and Mary Wright, she lived in Dawson County for seventy years. Along with her first husband, Jim Bruce, they owned and operated Bruce’s Store from 1940 until his death in 1970. She then married
Cecil Higgins and until his death they were affectionately known as the couple who lived above the Pool Room.
Surviving are her sisters Bessie Byess, Canton, and Edgell Howard, Jasper. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
Mrs. Higgins was cremated and no services are planned at this time.
Elmer Evans
Mr. Elmer “Elmo” Samuel Evans, age 69 of Pickens County, passed away Monday, Feb. 22, 2010.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Rebecca Lynn Evans; sisters and brothers, Melba Cain, Jess, Ansel (Hank), Gene and Marvin Evans; parents, Rev. Rufus and Gretell Evans; special love, Vanessa Akins.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Edward Samuel and Kelly Evans, Pickens County; grandchildren, Rebecca, Chelsea, Americus, Dustin and Austin; sisters and brothers-in-law, Dessie Westbrook, Dawsonville, Flonnie and Don Westbrook, Marietta, and Annelle and Jerry Self, Woodstock; brother and sister-in-law, J.L. and Jama Evans, Dawsonville; ex-wife, Linda Frady Evans, Jasper; and sisters-in-law, Alice and Doris Evans, both of Cumming, and Mildred Evans, Dawsonville. Several nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.
The funeral service will be held Thursday, Feb. 25 at 3 p.m. from the Ingram Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Shannon Westbrook and Joe Frady officiating. iIntermentwill follow in Concord Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends February 24 until 9 p.m. and Thursday, Feb. 25 from 9 a.m. until the hour of service.

Jerry Warren, Sr.
Mr. Jerry Lee Warren, Sr., age 58 of Jasper, passed away Feb. 22, 2010 at Piedmont Mountainside Medical Center in Jasper.
Survivors include his wife, Donna Warren, Jasper; parents, Ray and Ruby Warren., Talking Rock; son, Jerry Lee Warren, Jr., Jasper; daughters and son-in-law, Angie and Phil Alexander, Jasper, and Candia Lanning, Jasper; brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Louise Warren, Jasper; sisters and brothers-in-law, Regina and Ronnie Prater, Talking Rock, Bethany and Ronny Padgett, Jasper, Tammy and Mike Smith, Fitzgerald, Ga., and Linda and Ken Hensley, North Carolina. Eight grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24 from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with Pastor Ryan Smith officiating. iIntermentfollowed in Sunrise Memorial Gardens in Jasper with local Chapter 47 DAV in charge of the military graveside service. Anthony Burger
Anthony Burger, age 32 of Chatsworth, Ga., formerly of Canton, Ga., died suddenly Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010.
Survivors include his father, Tony Burger, Chatsworth, Ga.; mother and step-father, Jobyna and Buddy Stansel, Jasper, Ga.; and sister and brother-in-law, Jackie and Jay West, Canton. Several aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.

Randall Gibson
Mr. Randall Lee Gibson, age 55 of Dallas, Ga., formerly of Jasper, passed away Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010 at Wellstar Paulding Hospital in Dallas.
Survivors include his son, Philip Lee Gibson, Marietta; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ricky Gibson and Juanita Carder, Nelson, and Charlie and Sherry Gibson, Talking Rock; sister, Nancy Moore, Smyrna; nephew, Joshua Moore; and nieces, Marla Moore, Shanda Hampton, Katie Goforth and Heather Weaver. Several great-nieces and nephews also survive.

Hazel Parry
Hazel Leone Parry, age 94 of Austell, died Monday, Feb. 22, 2010.
Mrs. Parry lived in Pickens County from 1973 until 1997. She was a founding member of New Lebanon Presbyterian Church in Jasper, Ga. She taught the hearing impaired and special education in Atlanta and Pickens County.
She is survived by daughter, Elizabeth Carney, Calera, Al.; son, Jack Parry, Annapolis, Md.; and granddaughters, Tracey Patterson, Austell, and Dina Holsomback, Montevallo, Al. Four great-grandchildren also survive.

Gerald Headrick
Mr. Gerald Dean Headrick, age 59 of Jasper, passed away Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010 at his home.
He is survived by his wife, Sherry Whitaker Headrick, Jasper; daughters and sons-in-law, Lori and Jamie Assad and Ashley and Chip Davis, all of Jasper; sons and daughters-in-law, Von and Tracy Headrick, Jasper, and Kyle and Anna Headrick, Dawson County; brothers, Claude Headrick, Tunnell Hill, Ga., and Ron Headrick, Fairmount; sisters, Libby Patterson and Pat Blankinship, both of Jasper, and Janice Stone, Adairsville; mother-in-law, Shirley Whitaker, Jasper; grandchildren, Lindsey Headrick, Abigale Montgomery and Lucas Headrick, all of Jasper, and Ryan Headrick, Dawson County. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Dixon McCormack
Mr. Dixon L. “Dick” McCormack, age 87 of Big Canoe, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010, at his residence.
Born May 15, 1922 in Birmingham, Al., he was the son of the late Samuel Leonard and Alma Frank Leonard McCormack. Mr. McCormack was a World War II veteran having fought with Patton’s 3rd Army as a member of the infantry from the Battle of the Bulge in France to Arnhem and on to the outskirts of Berlin. After the war, he went to Auburn University graduating with a BS in Industrial Engineering. While at Auburn, he was a member of the Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity. He was also a member of the Georgia Mountains Auburn Booster Club. He worked for Republic Steel for 30 years, most of the time in their Atlanta sales office, from which he retired as their assistant district manager.
Mr. McCormack loved to play golf and was a member of the Big Canoe Sconti Golf Club. He loved playing for “putts” and taking the “old duffers” money, then playing Gin Rummy afterwards in the clubhouse.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Good-McCormack, Big Canoe; daughter and son-in-law, Sue Ann and Gary Gibson, Lawrenceville, Ga.; sons and daughters-in-law, Frank and Karen McCormack, Pickens, S.C., Walter Randy McCormack, Belen, NM, and Robert and Rebecca McCormack, Belen, NM. Seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, two step-daughters, their children and families also survive.
At his request, Mr. McCormack was cremated and a memorial service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 28, at the Big Canoe Chapel with Dr. Jimmy Allen and Dr. Gray Norsworthy officiating. iIntermentof the cremains was prior to the Memorial Service at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Big Canoe cemetery with the Rev. Jim McCormick officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Big Canoe Chapel.
Roscoe Parris
Mr. Roscoe Harford Parris, age 82 of Ellijay, passed away Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010 at his residence.
Mr Parris was retired from the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department and was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Joyce Hancock; and son Raymond Parris. Survivors include his wife, Jone Parris, Ellijay; daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley (Mike) West Talking Rock, Lynn (Thomas) Easterwood, Jasper, and Elaine (Chester) Turner, Ellijay; sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth (Denise) Fowler, Blue Ridge, Kem (Angie) Fowler, Ellijay, Johnny (Elaine) Fowler, Nelson, and Tommy (Barbara) Fowler, Ellijay; sisters-in-law, Nevada Parris, Canton, and Ann Martin, Ellijay. Twenty-three grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren also survive.

Willene Cody
Willene Moss Cody of Jasper, Ga. passed away Feb. 28, 2010.
Willene grew up as a farm girl in Jasper. In the late ’60s and early ’70s she worked for Mr. Dub Lawson at Lawson Chevrolet. As he mentored her, she helped him establish one of the finest Chevrolet dealerships in the Southeast which still operates today in Jasper.
In 1977, she pursued to establish a Chevrolet dealership. The following year, Cody Chevrolet in Dahlonega was founded by Willene and Bill Cody. She was the first woman in Georgia and the second in the United States to establish a General Motors dealership when business women were not accepted in the auto industry. Year after year, she continued to over-achieve in the auto industry by achieving top honors in sales and service satisfaction. The dealership always finished in the top 5 percent of the Southeast Region and achieving #1 overall Customer Satisfaction Index ranking on several occasions. She achieved Top Sales Volume Dealer for the southeast for Chevrolet cars in July 1986. Also, Willene established the Cody Scholarship at North Georgia College and State University which was the first for female scholar athletes at the University and is still awarded each year. After developing stage 4 breast cancer in 1996, she retired from the auto industry in 1998. Willene was a member of Ellijay Church of Christ.
She is survived by her loving husband of 38 years, Bill Cody; daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Ricky Poore, Dahlonega; son and daughter-in-law, Clyde and Monica Cody, Jasper; step-daughter, Brenda Price and husband Jerry, Jasper; granddaughter, Lindsey Lark and husband Justin, Canton; grandson, Austin Blevins, Canton; sisters and brother-in-law, Barbara and Billy Mabry, Marietta, and Joan Locke, Jasper. Several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren, her Soul Sister, Jeanette Lawson and husband Dub of Jasper, numerous cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, in-laws, and a multitude of friends and brothers and sisters in Christ.
The funeral service will be Thursday, March 4 at 2 p.m. from the Ellijay Church of Christ in Ellijay, Ga. with Minister Butch Jones officiating. iIntermentwill be in Jasper City Cemetery. The family received friends on Wednesday, March 3, from 4-8 p.m. at Cagle Funeral Home in Jasper. Bertie Cantrell
Mrs. Bertie Lee Cantrell age 82 of Jasper, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010 at Embracing Hospice in Cumming.
She is survived by her daughter Darlene Mullins, Jasper; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jack and Marjorie Wilson. Collinsville, Al., Lloyd and Edna Wilson, Adairsville, and W.L. and Charlotte Wilson, Jasper; sisters and brothers-in-law, Cleo Garrison and Pauline and J.C. Hightower, all of Jasper, Betty and David Reece, Ball Ground, and Lois and Wade Cantrell, Jasper; special friend, Ella Mae Reece, Jasper; and grandchildren, Rachel and Jeremy Mullins and Shena Wilmarth. Five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.
