Thelma McDonald
Thelma Marie “Cooter” McDonald, age 72, of Murrayville, Ga. died April 8, 2010 at her home.
Ms. McDonald was a native of Pickens County, Ga. who had lived in the Murrayville area for the past 10 years. She was a former Forsyth County resident. She was a retired convenience store clerk and was a member of Marble Hill Baptist Church in Pickens County.
She was the daughter of the late Robert and Mattie Lee Fields Carney and was also preceded in death by a son, Timothy Wayne Jones; brother, Leon Carney; sister, Vera Mae; and grandson, Robert Lee Jones.
Ms. McDonald is survived by daughters, Debra Gillespie, Cumming, Ga., Connie Sue Jones, Cleveland, Ga., and Angela Jones, Murrayville, Ga.; son, Anthony Jones, Murrayville, Ga.; and sister, Jean Forrester, Bowling Green, Fl. Ten grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a large number of other relatives and friends also survive. Banister Funeral Home of Dahlonega was in charge of the arrangements.
Ruth Mitchell
Ruth Hamilton Mitchell, age 85 of Big Canoe, Ga., died Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital.
She was a retired registered nurse and member of Trinity Evangelical Church.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Barry and Jana Mitchell; and daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Dane Vaughn, Jasper. Five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

James Burson
James Leland Burson of Jasper, Ga. went home to be with the Lord on April 21, 2010. A Smyrna, Ga. native, James held a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and Master’s degree in Physiology from Emory University. Prior to retiring in 2001, he worked in environmental health and safety with Merck & Company (in Wilson, N.C. and Albany, Ga.). He also held positions in environmental and safety-related at Georgia Tech, Georgia Power Co. and Lockheed-Georgia Co. during his working years.
He loved the outdoors all his life and he loved to teach and share all the wonders of nature. He was an AT Thru-Hiker in 1959, and continued to walk sections of the trails all through the years. After retirement he became active with the Friends of Amicalola Falls State Park. He loved working with the groups that came there; as well as the Appalachian Trail Celebration and Backpacking Clinic held there each spring. He served on the Friends of Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites Board of Directors. He was a Master Gardener. He was a lifelong learner; always volunteering and giving of himself.
He was married
to his wife, Barbara Lesley Burson, a Smyrna native, for 48 years. He cherished Barbara and their daughters, Leslie Ann Burson, Leigh Ann Burson, Laurie Burson Carter; his son-in-law, Robert Carter; and his wonderful grandchildren, Ella Mary Carter (8), Benjamin Joseph Burson (6) and Samuel Robert Carter (3).
He is survived by his brother-in-law and sister, Charles and Ann Pittard; nephews, Tommy and Davey Pittard and their families; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Charles and Paula Lesley; nephews, Chad, Alec and Brett Lesley and their families.
He faithfully walked with and served the Lord all his days. He was most loved and cherished. Many hearts grieve his passing today.
The funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Foothills Community Church, 13724 Hwy. 53, Marble Hill, Ga 30148 with the Rev. Bobby Wright
Mr. Bobby Joe Wright, age 64 of Talking Rock, Ga., passed away April 23, 2010 at his residence.
Survivors include his sister, Helen Jordan; niece, Susan Mosley; nephew, Chris Mosley; and aunt and uncle, Bertie and Carl Owenby, Talking Rock. Several cousins also survive.

Lucille Caylor
Mrs. Lucille Caylor, age 72 of Raymore, Mo., and formerly of Jasper, passed Monday, April 19, 2010 at her residence.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Susie and Larry Bouman, Raymore; brother and sister-in-law, James and Edna Chastain; sister, Retha Lathem, Pikeville, Tn.; and grandchildren, Amy Wisner and Jonathan Rice. Five great-grandchildren also survive.

Ruby Stone
Mrs. Ruby Stone, age 96 of Jasper, passed Tuesday morning, April 20, 2010 at Grandview Health Care in Jasper.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, James E. and Diane Stone and Robert and Judy Stone, all of Jasper, and Larry and Vickie Stone, Florida; daughter, Annette McClanahan, Maryland; and brother, Thomas Courson, Marietta. Seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held Friday, April 23 at 11 a.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Phillips officiating.
Janice Phillips
Mrs. Janice Elaine Forrester Phillips of Danielsville, Ga., died Thursday, April 29, 2010 at her home.
Mrs. Phillips was born in Tate, Ga. on Sept. 24, 1964, daughter of the late Ray and Martha Cox Forrester. She was a homemaker and caregiver and member of the Corinth Baptist Church in Marble Hill, Ga.
Survivors include her husband, Duane Kelly Phillips, Danielsville; sons and daughter-in-law, Colby and Tiffany Phillips and Tyler Phillips, all of Danielsville; brother, Jeff Forrester, Canton; sisters, Amy Isley, Canton, and Penny Barnes, Marble Hill.

Karl Manzel
Mr. Karl T. Manzel, age 73 of Canton, passed on Thursday, April 29, 2010 at Northside Hospital-Atlanta.
Mr. Manzel was a veteran of the Korean Conflict where he served his country in the US Army. He was a member of True Life Church in Ball Ground and served on the State Committee for the Georgia Republican Party. Mr. Manzel owned and operated New Earth Grading and Excavating.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Manzel, Canton; step-daughter, Adrienne Orr, Canton; and step-son, Ed Orr, Las Vegas. Six step-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 2 from Sosebee Memorial Chapel with Pastor Ryan Smith officiating. Entombment followed at Sunrise Memorial Park in Jasper. Contributions may be made to CARES of Pickens County, 89 Cares Dr., PO Box 1342, Jasper, Ga. 30143.

John Westerman, III
Mr. John B. Westerman, III, age 79 of the Macedonia Community, passed away Saturday, May 1, 2010 at his residence.
Mr. Westerman graduated from West Fulton High School and was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He retired from Atlanta Gas Light as an inspector with over 40 years of service. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Josephine Westerman; daughters, Donna (Jeff) Trotter and Cindy (Wayne) Davis, all of the Macedonia Community; brother, Leslie Westerman, Billings, Mt.; grandchildren, Brittany Haught, Leigh Ann Trotter, Mitchell Trotter and Jonathan Davis; and great-granddaughter, Madison Haught. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Clint Rollins
Mr. Clint Rollins, age 23 of Conyers, Ga. and formerly of Jasper, passed at his residence in Conyers Friday evening, April 30, 2010.
Survivors include his parents, Richard and Patsy Rollins, Jasper; grandmother, Margaret Brown, Blue Ridge, sister, Tricia Rollins, Jasper; and girlfriend, Lora Wingo, Conyers.

Marlan Whitaker
Mr. Marlan Robert Whitaker, age 47 of the Whitepath Community Ellijay, Ga., passed on Saturday, May 1, 2010 in Ocala, Fl.
Mr. Whitaker was born on Jan. 15 in Ellijay. He was a member of the Baptist faith and was self-employed as a carpenter in the construction industry. He was preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Thomas Whitaker; brothers, Bennie Lamar and David Thomas Whitaker; and special friend, Denise Martin.
Marlan is survived by his mother and father, Fannie and Frank Whitaker, Jasper, Ga.; sisters and brother-in-law, Judy W. White, Blairsville, Ga., and Sherri W. and David Terry, Jasper; and brothers and sister-in-law, David and Gloria Whitaker and Paul Everett Whitaker, all of Jasper. Ten nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 6 from the Logan Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Emuel Sanford officiating. Eunice Pinyan
Eunice Smith Pinyan, age 87 of Maryville, passed away Friday, April 30, 2010 at Blount Memorial Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Aldon Pinyan; parents, Hazel and Nellie Smith; sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Raymond Potter; and brother, Boyd Smith.
Survivors include her daughter, Kay Snodgrass, Tellico Village Community, Loudon; son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Tina Pinyan, Alcoa; sister-in-law, Betty Smith, Maryville; nieces, Pam Gerhart, Columbia, Tn., and Gail Holloway, Maryville; nephew, Ivan Potter, Hurst, Tx.; and great-nieces, Mandy Roe and Lindsay Holloway.

Eula Griffith
Mrs. Eula Griffith, age 77 of Marble Hill, passed away May 3, 2010 at her residence.
Survivors include her husband, W.P. Pierce Griffith, Marble Hill; son and daughter-in-law, Carl and Diane Griffith, Marble Hill; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Alvin Pool and Brenda and Rick Ray. all of Marble Hill, and Connie and Jimmy Fann, Jasper. Nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Herman Pettigrew
Herman E. Pettigrew moved on to a better place on Friday, April 30, 2010 at Metropolitan Hospice Serenity Manor.
He was a lifelong citizen of Pickens County. He was preceded in death by a brother, Harley Pettigrew, Jasper; and parents, Dollie and Lawrence Pettigrew, Jasper.
Survivors include his daughter, Kasha Rose, Jasper; grandson, Phoenix Douglas, Jasper; sisters, Fay Edwards, Hinton Community, and Mary Bateman, Warner Robbins area, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Herman worked many years as head of maintenance at our local hospital and nursing home, as well as a store clerk for many of our local convenience stores. To know Herman was simply to love him.
Following Herman’s request of cremation, his funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 6 at Salem Baptist Church. The eulogy will be delivered by long-time friend, Rev. Von Hinton. Pallbearer will be Mark Shoemaker.
