Joe Rueffert
Jochem “Joe” Rueffert passed away Friday, March 19, 2010 surrounded by friends and family.
Joe and his wife Brenda moved to Jasper in 1976 to raise their family and operate The Woodbridge Inn. For 34 years Joe helped families near and far celebrate their lives with his wonderful food and generous hospitality. You just aren’t truly from Jasper unless you’ve had Joe pick on you!
He was born Jochem Rüffert in Frauenwaldau, Germany on July 15, 1940. One of four brothers born to homemaker Dora and veterinarian Werner, Joe’s childhood saw his family having to make many sacrifices during the post World War II years. So much of what Joe did to survive as a child shaped the man he became. He never wasted anything, from chicken bones to bent nails, Joe knew how to reuse and recycle way before it became a trend.
As a young adult in East Germany, Joe was assigned the duty of guarding the Berlin wall during his required military service. Risking his life, Joe dodged bullets and land mines to escape to his freedom. This rare story of bravery and determination was featured in many publications and television interviews, including one on CNN.
Once in the west, Joe attended hotel and catering school in the Bavarian city of Tegernsee. This experience granted him the opportunity to travel to work in the United States at the O’Hare Airport in Chicago, Il. Joe spoke no English when he first arrived, but learned the language by watching the Three Stooges daily.
Eventually, Joe ended up working in the south where he met a pretty Georgia girl named Brenda Sewell. Brenda and Joe married
and began their family having Sonja in 1969 and Hans in 1972.
Joe is survived by his wife of 43 years, Brenda Sewell Rueffert; his son, Hans, daughter-in-law Amy, grandchildren Finn and Ella, all of Jasper. Also surviving are Joe’s brothers, Klaus of Braunschweig, Germany, Wolfgang of Emden, Germany, and Michael of Avewedde, Germany. Joe was predeceased by his daughter, Sonja Yvonne in 2004.
For those of you who knew, loved and respected Joe, we are having a memorial service on Sunday, March 28 at the First Baptist Church in Jasper at 2 p.m. We will also have family visitation on Saturday the 27th from 5-7 at Cagle Funeral Home in Jasper. In lieu of flowers, we’re asking that friends make a donation in his honor to Life Link, non-profit organ and tissue recovery organization dedicated to serving patients in need of transplant therapy and their families. Life Link was instrumental in helping Joe procure his second kidney transplant, and he was always a major supporter of organ donation. You may make a donation by mail or phone to:
The LifeLink Legacy Fund
409 Bayshore Boulevard
Tampa, Fl. 33606
800-262-5775
For those who would like to make a gift online, they have a secure Web site where you can make a donation on Joe’s behalf at: http://www.lifelinkfound. org/legacy.cfm. Without Life Link, we would’ve lost Joe years ago. Donations may also be made in his honor to the First Baptist Church of Jasper.
Joe’s contributions to Jasper and Pickens County will be felt and remembered for years. He was a great man that impacted the lives of everyone that came through the dining room at the Woodbridge Inn. The true patriarch of our family, we looked up to him both as a man and as our father. We will forever miss his quick wit and love.
