SFC James Frank Hatten
Services for retired SFC James Frank Hatten of Weaver, Ala. were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 27 at Chapel Hill Funeral Home Chapel in Anniston, Ala. with interment in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Alexandria, Ala.
The Rev. Don Barnett officiated.
Hatten, 83, died Thursday, March 25, 2004. He was the son of the late Carpus Hatten and Randy Bowen Hatten and was married to Joyce Cooke Hatten of Weaver, Ala.
He was a native of Telfair County and had been residing in Weaver, Ala. for the past 44 years. He was retired from the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Weaver, Ala. He received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge and Master Parachutist Badge awards.
In addition to his wife, survivors include his daughter, Barbara Hatten Rossie of Atlanta; sons, James Hatten of Atlanta, Mike Hatten of Weaver, Ala. and Richard Hatten of San Antonio, Texas; sister, Mary Symmes of Alexandria; brothers, Clyde Hatten of Oxford, Ala., Griff Hatten of Ft. Valley, and William Hatten of Weaver, Ala. and seven grandchildren.
Chapel Hill Funeral Home of Anniston, Ala. was in charge of arrangements.
Louise Harville Holmes
Services for Louise Harville Holmes of Alamo were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 4 at the Alamo Baptist Church with interment in the Alamo City Cemetery.
The Rev. Neal Wall officiated.
Holmes, 95, died Friday, April 2, 2004. She was the daughter of the late Hugh S. and Lella Lord Harville and was the widow of C.L. Holmes. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Frankie H. Pope.
She was a native of Wheeler County and was a member of Alamo Baptist Church.
Survivors include her sisters, Bertie Sue Warga of Athens, Mae Palik of St. Petersburg, Fla. and Edna Earl Stone of Albany; granddaughter, Karen P. White of Macon; and grandson, Richard Pope of Macon.
Lowe’s Funeral Home of Helena was in charge of arrangements.
Max Lockwood
Services for Max Lockwood of Douglas were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 3 at the First Baptist Church in Douglas with interment in the Douglas City Cemetery.
The Rev. Shep Johnson officiated.
Lockwood, 78, died Wednesday, March 31, 2004. He was the son of the late Lester Brown and Ethel Terrer Lockwood and was married to Ginny Lockwood of Douglas.
He was a native of Macon County, but had resided in Douglas for most of his life. He was the former mayor of Douglas and was a member of the Douglas First Baptist Church. He was a World War II Veteran of the United States Air Force and a POW in Germany. He was a guest columnist in The Telfair Enterprise.
In addition to his wife, survivors include his daughters, Skye Jordan of Vidalia and Honey Evans of Martinez; sons, Charles Max Lockwood Jr. of Willacoochee and Pratt Lockwood of Hagan; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Sims Funeral Home of Douglas was in charge of arrangements.
Michael Andrew Simmons
Graveside services for Michael Andrew Simmons of McRae were held at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 1 at Helena City Cemetery.
The Rev. Archie Page officiated.
Simmons, infant, died Sunday, March 28, 2004. He was the son of Carl and Katie Simmons of McRae. He was born in Bibb County.
In addition to his parents, survivors include his brother, Chad Simmons of Helena; grandparents, Gayle Byrum and Tony Palmer, both of Atlanta, Gail Bowden of Hahira and Wayne Simmons of Helena; great-grandparents, Sarah and William Byrum of Norfolk, Va., Lillian LaVell of Macon and T.F. and Eunice Simmons of Helena; aunt, Allison Palmer of Atlanta; uncle, Lee Simmons of Helena.
Lowe’s Funeral Home of Helena was in charge of arrangements.
Sarah Eltice Spires
Services for Sarah Eltice Spires of Milan were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 1 at Siloam Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery.
The Rev. Alvin Lewis and the Rev. Myron Lane officiated.
Spires, 58, died Monday, March 29, 2004. She was the daughter of the late Walter Reecie and Willie Mae Williams Spires Jr. She was a native of Telfair County.
Survivors include her sisters, Effie Vaughn of Eastman and Javene Williams of Milan; brothers, Julian Spires of Milan, Gerald Spires of West Green and Mason Spires of McRae.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to the Epilepsy Foundation of Georgia at 100 Edgewood Avenue NE, Atlanta 30303.

Ruby Clyde Thomas Welch
Services for Ruby Clyde Thomas Welch of Milledgeville were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 24 at Lowe’s Funeral Home with interment in the Sand Hill Cemetery.
The Rev. Tim Oliver officiated.
Welch, 100, died Monday, March 22, 2004. She was the daughter of Alvin and Viola Massey Thomas and was the widow of Archie Lee Welch. She was preceded in death by her daughters, Ruby Lee Welch, Vedia Myrtle Welch and Ida Maude Smith.
She was a native of Wheeler County and grew up in Telfair County, but lived most of her life in Ware County before moving to Milledgeville. She worked as an LPN with Ware County Hospital for over 35 years. She was a member of the Central Baptist Church of Waycross.
Survivors include her son, A. Reuben Welch Sr. of Milledgeville; sister, Latha Cartwright of McRae; eight grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Sand Hill Cemetery Fund, 703 W. Liberty Street of McRae.
Moore’s Funeral Home of Milledgeville was in charge of arrangements with Lowe’s Funeral Home of Helena in charge of local arrangements.
Chandler Andrew Alexander
Services for Chandler Andrew Alexander of Helena were held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 26 in the Alamo Baptist Church with interment at 4:30 p.m. in the Brushy Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Ocilla.
The Rev. Steve Hand officiated with pianist and soloist Terry Hester of Hazlehurst.
Alexander, 8, died Tuesday, March 23, 2004. He was the son of Kristi Miller of Helena and Andrew Alexander of Fitzgerald. He was preceded in death by a great-grandmother, Lillian Whitley Alexander.
He was a native of Volusia, Fla., a member of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church and was a third grade student at Wheeler Co. Elementary School.
In addition to his parents, survivors include his stepfather, Chad Miller of Helena; stepmother, Jodi Alexander of Fitzgerald; brothers, Dakota Miller and Whitley Alexander; maternal grandparents, Randy and Gail Purvis of Alamo, Danny and Nita Walsh of Baxley and Janice Walsh of Helena; paternal grandparents, Jimmy and Judi Alexander of Newnan; great-grandparents, Dorothy Smith of Hazlehurst, Ruby Manning of Hazlehurst, Betty Jo Soles of McRae and Billy and Mabel Purvis of Alamo.
Towns Funeral Home of Alamo was in charge of arrangements.
Bernard Ray Jackson
Services for Bernard Ray Jackson of Alamo were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 27 in the chapel of Lowe’s Funeral Home with interment in the Scotland City Cemetery.
The Rev. Sherwin Bell, the Rev. Brian Patrick and the Rev. Nick Hazelton officiated.
Jackson, 61, died Thursday, March 25, 2004. He was the son of the late William Brainard and Bessie Beatrice Nelson Jackson Jr., and was married to Annette Livingston Jackson of Alamo.
A native of Wheeler County, he was a retired engineer after 33 years with the Department of Transportation and was also a log truck driver.
In addition to his wife, survivors include his daughter, Jennifer Ellison of North Carolina; brother, William Jackson Jr. of Alamo; uncle, Clint Jackson of Alabama; one grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family ask contributions be made to Hospice of Vidalia, Glory Bound Baptist Church or to a children’s charity of ones choice.

Pearl McKinney
Services for Pearl McKinney of McRae were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 27 at New Salem Baptist Church of Jacksonville with interment in the Rock Hill CME Church Cemetery. The Rev. King officiated.
McKinney, 83, died Wednesday, March 24, 2004. She was the daughter of the late Bessie and Clark Wilcox and was the widow of Ossie McKinney. She was a native of Telfair County.
Survivors include her daughters, Rowena Wilcox of Bridgeton, N.J., Marie McKinney of Lumber City, Ruthie M. Hudson of St. Petersburg, Fla.; sons, Frank McKinney of Jacksonville and Arthur Wilcox of Abbeville; sister, Mamie McMillian of McRae; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A.L. Spaulding Funeral Home of McRae was in charge of arrangements.
