Steve Dawson
Mr. Steve Terry Dawson, age 50 of Jasper, Ga., passed away on Monday, June 14, 2010, at the Metropolitan Hospice in Marietta, Ga. following his battle with cancer.
Born Sept. 11, 1959 in Pickens County, he was preceded in death by his father, Johnnie Lee Dawson. Mr. Dawson was a U.S. Navy veteran, had worked in supply at Lockheed in Marietta and was a member of the Friendship Baptist Church in Jasper.
Survivors include, his mother, Mrs. Frances Chatman, Jasper; son, Brandon Dawson, Marietta; daughter, Deandra Dawson, Marietta; sisters, Beverly Hooks and Andrea Johnson, both of Jasper, Ga.; brother, Cedric Dawson Cleveland, Ga.; grandchildren, Keyiontae and Keyshone Dawson; and special friend, Robin Patterson, Jasper. aunts, uncles, cousin, nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.
The funeral service was held at 11 a.m., Friday, June 18 at Friendship Baptist Church with the Rev. R.S. Thomas officiating. iIntermentfollowed at 2 in Georgia National cemetery in Canton with military honors.
Lerol Champion
Lerol Champion, age 81 of Palm Dessert, Ca., died Jan. 27, 2010.
Born Feb. 6, 1928 in Canton, Ga. to the late Richard and Ella Newberry Champion, he had resided in the Los Angeles area from 1949 until 1979 as an employee of Burroughs Corp. He then relocated to San Jose to work as senior materials manager for Solectron Corp. until his retirement in 2002.
Champ, as he was called, received numerous awards in the course of his employment with Solectron and was honored nationally by President George H.W. Bush as recipient of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in 1987 and 1991. Champ served in the US Navy stationed as electricians mate 3rd class aboard the USS Sperry, USS Sea Fox and USS Coucal. He was awarded several medals for his service, among them WWII Victory, American Theatre and Asiatic Pacific Medals. Champ attended school in Jasper and Cass Station, Ga. and was a member of Fairview Baptist Church in Atco, Ga.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Champion; and four sisters, Pearl Cardwell, Lila Belle Teague, Grace Norris and Louise Lowery.
Survivors include his brothers, Leon and Paul Champion, both of Chattanooga, Tn. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A graveside memorial service will be conducted by Pickens Chapter #47, Disabled American Veterans, at Long Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery, Marble Hill, Ga., on June 30 at 2 p.m.

Charlie Mulkey
Mr. Charles (Charlie Brown) Mulkey, age 62 of Tate, passed away Friday, June 18, 2010 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Judith Mulkey, Tate; father, John J. Mulkey, Ludville Community; daughters and sons-in-law, Stacey Mulkey and Robert Cantrell and Donna and Ryan Wilson, all of Jasper, Heather Hall and Jessica Carver; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ronnie and Ree Mulkey, Jasper, and Wayne and Nancy Mulkey, Dawsonville; sisters and brothers-in-law, Rosa Taylor, Texas, Ruth Richards, Tate, Patsy Mulkey, Texas, Willie Mae and Oliver Holcomb, Hinton Community, Mary Lou and Bill Hendrix and Imogene Jewett, all of Ranger, and Trudy and Tim Henderson, Jasper. 12 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 20 from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Revs. Mike Byess, Keith Cook and Greg Long officiating. iIntermentfollowed at Lake Forrest Memorial Park. Pallbearers were: Johnny Parker, Doug Harper, Zachary Donley, Carl Hollingshead, Phillip Wilson and Thomas Wigington. The family did accept flowers, but would prefer donations to Cagle Funeral Home to help with the funeral expenses.
Artie Mitchell
Mrs. Artie Mae Mitchell, age 87 of Talking Rock. passed away Friday, June 18, 2010 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Ken and Kim Mitchell, Marietta; daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Steve McGraw, Talking Rock; special niece and nephew, Marie and Zack Fletcher, Talking Rock; brother, Alex Cain, Acworth; sister, Dorothy Green, Atlanta; grandchildren, Christy, Michael and Cortney McGraw and Jennifer, Jessica and Josh Mitchell; and great-grandchild, Toccoa Mcgraw. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Edith Wilson
Mrs. Edith Caylor Wilson, age 69 of Jasper, Ga., passed away Saturday, June 19, 2010 at her residence, following a period of declining health.
Born May 19, 1941 in Pickens County, she received her BS Ed in secondary education from the Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, G. She was a former high school teacher, social worker and manager of her husband’s business, Wilson Surveying. Mrs. Wilson was preceded in death by her father, Ernest Caylor, and a sister, Denise Jackson. She was a member of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband of 46 years, Roy Dotson Wilson, Jr., Jasper; mother, Mrs. Eunice Caylor, Canton, Ga.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Ernestine Holcomb, Ball Ground, Ga., Christine and James Neal, Holly Springs, Ga., Joan and Nile Juhan, Canton, Ga.; and Steve Jackson, Dawsonville, Ga.; and brother and sister-in-law, Lamar and Judy Caylor, Smyrna, Ga.; Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Willie Watts
Mr. Willie “Bill” Watts, age 86 of Fairmount, Ga., departed this life Saturday, June 19, 2010 at Gordon Health Care Center. Bill was born on Oct. 15, 1923 in Gordon County, Ga., son of the late W.F. and Estelle Alexander Watts. Mr. Watts was preceded in death by his daughter, Teresa Howard; daughter-in-law, Lura Watts; in-laws, Lee and Amanda Wilson; sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Almon Crow; sisters-in-law, Ann Cochran and Mary Pilcher.
He was a lifetime member of Fairmount United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School for many years. Bill was the owner of Watts Store.
Bill is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Edna Watts; son, Calvin Watts; grandchildren, Kimberly and Alana Watts, all of Fairmount, Deirdra Wiley and husband Wayne, Rome, Ga.; son-in-law, Ted Howard, Calhoun, Ga.; brother-in-law, Dorsey Cochran, Ellijay, Ga. and Edward Wilson, Dalton, Ga.; and sister-in-law, Maeceil and Herman Taylor, Newnan, Ga. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

James Jones, Jr.
James William (Bill) Jones, Jr., age 79 of Jasper, Ga., found peace and rest in the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Monday, May 24, 2010, following a hard fought battle with cancer.
A native of Copperhill, Tn., Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his parents, James William Jones, Sr. and Leila Richard Jones, as well as his half-sister, Kathleen Jones Johnson.
Mr. Jones was honored to have served his country during the Korean War as a hospital corpsman for the United States Navy. He attended Tennessee Wesleyan College in Athens, Tn. for two years, graduated from the Cincinnati School of Embalming (currently Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science) in Cincinnati, Oh. and also attended the Georgia State College of Business Administration (currently Georgia State University) in Atlanta. As a young man, Mr. Jones was an employee of the Spring Hill Chapel of H.M. Patterson & Son Funeral Directors. Following a career change and 29 years of service, he retired as the Southern Regional sales manager for William H. Rorer, Inc. (currently Sanofi-Aventis), where he was honored as an inductee into the William H. Rorer, Inc. Hall of Fame. After an additional five years of service with Schwarz Pharma LLC, he elected to enter into permanent retirement. Mr. Jones served as a faithful member and deacon of Foothills Community Church in Marble Hill, Ga. In recent years, he considered it a blessing to act as a volunteer in a local prison ministry, thereby touching many lives at the Pickens County Jail.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Jacqueline Hague Jones, Jasper; daughter, Catherine Jones, Suwanee, Ga.; son and daughter-in-law, W. Douglas and Wanda C. Jones, Lake St. Louis, Mo.; grandchildren, James William Jones III and Laura Lenae Jones; and brother and sister-in-law, Wendell Millard and Connie D. Jones, Chattanooga, Tn. Nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service was held at 11 a.m., Thursday, May 27 from Foothills Community Church in Marble Hill with the Rev. John Reale and Dr. B.V. Franklin officiating. Entombment followed at 2 at Sawnee View Gardens in Cumming, Ga. Willie Pye
Mr. Willie Leonard Pye, age 74 of Nelson, Ga., died Monday, May 24, 2010 at Northside Hospital-Cherokee in Canton, Ga. following a sudden illness.
Born Oct. 9, 1935 in Bartow County, Ga., he was the son of the late James W. Pye, Sr. and Carolyn Johnson Pye. Mr. Pye was a U.S. Army veteran having retired after 30 years of service and had work as an Insurance Agent for 10 years with the Independent Life Insurance Company.
Survivors include, daughters, Natalie Riley and Kim Jones, both of Canton; son, Leonard Pye, Hampton, Ga.; step-sons, Trent, Kelly, Shane and Renfus Pye, all of Canton; sisters, Emma Mullins, Union City, Ga., Virginia Pye, Douglasville, Ga., Vivian Chatman, Holly Springs, Ga., Sandra Thomas, College Park, Ga., and April Pye, of Douglasville; brothers, Jesse Pye, Atlanta; Leon Pye, Decatur, and James Pye, Jr., of Nelson; grandchildren, Chonsie, Javaun and Jordan Pye, Synitta Riley, LaQuita Foster and Peltrie Jones; and great-grandchild, Anijah Jones. A host of nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.
The funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 28 from True Life Church (formerly World Harvest Church) with the remains placed in state at the church at 9 a.m. Revs. John H. Brown and Robert Holmes officiated, with interment at 12:30 at the Georgia National cemetery in Canton with full military honors.
James Riherd
James Edwin Riherd, age 89, died May 24, 2010, at Wildwood Nursing Home in Jasper. He was born in Cave City, Ky. on Feb. 24, 1921.
James went on and pursued a higher education at Georgetown College in Georgetown, Ky. At Georgetown, he excelled at math and theological studies. He also attended and graduated from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Tx.
He spent the next almost 30 years as a full-time minister. He then got into the school system as a teacher and administrator while continuing to pastor part-time. When he retired from the school system, he continued to pastor and teach Sunday School well into his 80’s in South Georgia. Along with spreading the gospel, he was an avid farmer and loved being in his garden.
James was a loving man that enjoyed the simpler things in life. He could always be counted on for stimulating conversation, wonderful stories about life on a farm, or just a good laugh. He will be dearly missed, but we know he is with his Heavenly Father and that he is whole once again.
He is survived by his son, Ed Mark Riherd, New York; daughter, Donna Miller, Tallahassee; and grandchildren, Chelsey, Jasper, Stephanie, Mississippi, and Stephen, Monticello. Seven great-grandchildren also survive.
A memorial service will be held on June 8 at 11 a.m. from Mt. Hope Community Church at 5335 Hwy. 53 W, Jasper, Ga. 30143. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Mt. Hope Community Church in James Riherd’s memory.
Ben Brooks
Mr. Ben Jim Brooks, age 81 of Jasper, passed away at his residence Sunday, May 16, 2010.
Survivors include his wife, Jewell Brooks, Jasper; son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Kay Brooks, Chattanooga, Tn.; daughter, Joan Stone, Chattanooga, Tn.; brothers and sister-in-law, Gene and Christine Brooks, Jasper, and Ernest Brooks, Canton; sisters, Marie Fountain and Opalene Parton, both of Canton, Ilene Rogers, Ethel Norton and Lemmer Graves; and sister-in-law, Frances Brooks. Four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Mr. Brooks was preceded in death by a son, Johnny Brooks.

Betty Dean
Mrs. Betty Wilson Dean, age 56 of Canton, passed away Tuesday June 1, 2010 at Northside Hospital-Cherokee.
Mrs. Dean was a member of the Oak Hill Baptist Church in Rydal. She was employed by Goss Tractor for over 37 years. She was a devoted grandmother. She is survived by her husband, Tom Dean, Canton; daughters and sons-in-law, Tammie and Jason Anderson, Canton, Connie and Jason Phillips, Cartersville, and Deanna Clackum, Canton; son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Christy Dean, Jasper; sisters, Darlene Fountain and Dixie Byers, both of Jasper, Eunice McCoy and Doris Dean, Ball Ground; brother, John Wilson, Ball Ground; and grandchildren, Jake Dean, Tucker Dean, Joshua Phillips and Will Anderson. Several nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her sister, Pat Gentry.
The body remains at Roper Funeral Home with visitation all day Wednesday and Thursday until the funeral hour. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday from the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with the Rev. Huey Holloway officiating. iIntermentwill follow in the Panwill cemetery in McCaysville, Ga. Edith Fields
Mrs. Edith Evans Fields, age 83 of Jasper, passed away June 1, 2010 at Heritage Healthcare of Jasper.
She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law: Ronnie and Stacy Fields, Jasper, Jim Fields and his fiance, Peggy Allen; and grandchildren, Brittany Fields Gaddis, Jacob Thomas Fields, Ethan Evan Fields, Ellie Andreah Fields and Emily Frances Fields, all of Jasper. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Gloria Ellison
Mrs. Gloria Alma Warren Ellison, age 77 of Jasper, Ga., died Wednesday, June 2, 2010, at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital in Jasper following a sudden illness.
Born May 23, 1933 in Tifton, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Herschel C. and Alma Barfield Warren. Gloria graduated from Montezuma High School in Montezuma, Ga. and the Jacksonville Business College in Jacksonville, Fl.
Gloria was a wife, mother and homemaker. She married
her high school sweetheart, Clyde Ellison, Jr. During their 57-year marriage, they made their home in Atlanta, Ga., Leawood, Ks., Wheeling, W.V., Middletown, N.J. and Jasper. Gloria enjoyed sewing, reading, fishing and playing with her pets, especially her poodle, J.J. Survivors include, her husband of 57 years, Clyde Ellison, Jr. of Jasper; children, Pamela Ellison Mackay (Neilson), Johns Creek, Ga., Susan Ellison Rau (Jerry), Boonville, Mo., and Clyde Scott Ellison (Nancy), St. Clairsville, Oh.; grandchildren, Tommy Ayers (Jackie), Central City, Ia., Christopher Ayers (Beth), Cedar Rapids, Ia., Caroline Reynolds, Antigonish, Ns., Candace Viertel (Brian), Boonville, Mo., David Rau (Katie), Fayette, Mo., Sarah Rau, Boonville, Mo., and Anthony, Travis, Natalie and Nathanial Ellison, all of St. Clairsville, Oh. Eight great-grandchildren also survive. The funeral service was held at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 7 from Roper Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Von J. Catherine Bridges
Mrs. Catherine Moody Bridges, age 82 of Jasper, passed away Saturday, June 5, 2010 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital.
Mrs. Bridges worked as a custodian at Pickens Technical School and was a member of the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Ben Bridges, Jasper; and children, Randy Bridges, Kennesaw, Joan Stanley, Nelson, Melvin Bridges, Canton, Allen Bridges, Tate, Jasne Hooks and Alisia Bridges, both of Kennesaw. Twenty-one grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren also survive.
The body remains at Roper Funeral Home where the family will be receiving friends on Thursday from 6-8 p.m. The Funeral Service will be at 2 p.m. Friday from Mt. Calvary Baptist Church where the body will lie in state from 1 p.m. until the funeral hour.
