A native of Atkinson County, he grew up in Millwood and lived most of his life in Waycross and Blackshear. He was the son of the late Rob White and Estell Mixon White. A son, Rufus Jerry White, Jr., and two grandchildren, Amber Revels and Angel Byrd preceded him in death.

He worked as a tractor mechanic for many years with his brothers-in-law Dan, Monroe, Robert, Bill and Joe Perritt at Perritt Tractor Service and many years at the trailer plants with Gene “Bigun” Williams, Ronald Purvis, and Denny Taylor forming long lasting relationships with them all. Though he never possessed a lot of worldly goods, Jerry would literally be willing to give you the shirt off of his back. He tried to help everyone he could in any way that he could. He was a “jack of all trades”, but was often called upon by friends and family members especially for his skills as a carpenter, carpet layer, mechanic and farmer. He loved fishing and hunting with friends and family. He looked forward to the annual Easter egg hunts and ball games held in Millwood as well as his Mother’s birthdays, his family’s birthdays, and special occasions such as Thanksgiving and Christmas as a time to be enjoyed and to make people laugh. He was in his element supervising a cookout and grilling for his family and friends. He liked to brag on his cooking and everyone agreed with him that the food was wonderful. But, sometimes this might have been just because by the time the food was ready they were starving. He wasn’t a quick cook. If he said it was going to be ready by lunchtime, you had to be prepared to eat mid-afternoon. He loved to pick with and play with people and continued to do so until he could no longer speak. He always meant well and never intentionally hurt anyone. He endured many hardships in his life, but never failed to provide for his children. During his last weeks on this earth, he rededicated his life to the Lord and was ready to go home to be with him in Heaven. He spent his last days surrounded by family members reassuring him of their love and their understanding that he was ready to let go and stop the pain and suffering. His sister-in-law Rickie volunteered her home for his final days so that he would not have to remain in a hospital, but be in a loving home surrounded by his loved ones. Hospice made all of this a very smooth transaction providing the necessary medically related items and information and friends and family provided everything else so that the large family could be together. In his final seconds, his daughter Sheila told him it was okay to go home that she would be okay and he could just go. All the family are glad God saw fit to take him out of this world of suffering and grant him eternal peace with Him in Heaven, but will miss his smile and jokes. They are thankful for the many fond memories of days gone by and now have the desire to see him again one day in his heavenly home.
Friends and family serving as pallbearers, honorary pallbearers, and singing songs of praise for the family are giving from their love for Jerry and his Heavenly Father. It is not an easy thing to do to sing at a funeral of a friend or loved one, so their song messages are to be taken into our hears and cherished along with the painful memory of Jerry’s passing.
