Helen Monett Allen Tison
Mrs. Helen Monett Allen Tison, 79, passed away Sunday, December 12, 2010, in the Heritage Healthcare of Valdosta.
Mrs. Tison was born January 29, 1931 in Hahira, to the late Talmadge Barton and Maude Touchton Barton. She was a member of the Edith Baptist Church and had worked for the Clinch County School Board and St. Regis Paper Company and was manager of the Cypress Creek Blueberry Farm. She was the widow of Bob Tison and was preceded in death by one step-son, Donald Tison, and one brother, Wallace Barton.
Survivors are one daughter, Denise “Sissy” Allen Huelsnitz of Valdosta; one son, Franklin Marion “Jabo” Allen, Jr. of Fargo; one step-daughter, Suzanne Tison of Fargo; two step-sons, Cecil Tison of Leesburg, Fla. and Troy and Karen Tison of Pendergrass, Ga.; step daughter-in-law, Pam Tison of Homerville; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Lois and Dr. Joseph Houston of Valdosta, Betty and Dr. Gene Giles of Blakely, Ga. and Bobbi Spikes of Fargo; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and several other relatives.
Services for Mrs. Tison will be held Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at 11 a.m. from the Edith Baptist Church in Fargo.
Internment will be in the Fargo Memorial Cemetery
The family will receive friends Tuesday, December 14, 2010, from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Mrs. Tison will be carried to the church one hour prior to the service.

ohn Robert Boyles
Mr. John Robert Boyles, 63, passed away Monday, July 18, 2011 at South Georgia Medical Center in Valdosta, Ga.
Mr. Boyles was born February 3, 1948, in Bacon County. He was the son to the late James Boyles and Nicie Griffin Boyles. He retired from Bway after 30 years. He was a member of the DuPont Full Gospel Mission Church where he played the piano.
Survivors are his wife, Joan Deese Boyles of Homerville, daughter and son-in-law K-Jo and Henry Welch, son Allen Peeples of Homerville; five grandchildren, Brooklyn Welch, Wyatt Welch, Kendall Welch, Heather Peeples, and Hannah Peeples; two sisters Sharon Ellis of Homerville, Tommarie Powell of Fernandina Beach Fla.; one brother and sister-in-law, J.W. and Janelle Boyles of Homerville; three brothers and sisters-in-law Jerry and Ruby Dale Deese of Homerville, Stanley and Sheila Pittman of Waycross, Doral and Martha Hainley of Naylor; 11 nieces and nephews, C.J. Zipper, Vickie Hill, Glynn Pittman, Jamie Pittman, Abby Pittman Sweat, Joe Sherrod, Jerome Sherrod, Cindy Welch, Ginger Arnold, Johnny Lavon Deese, and the late Rev. Johnny Westmoreland.
Services for Mr. Boyles will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 20, 2011 from the DuPont Full Gospel Mission Church.
Internment will be in North Cemetery.
Visitation was held Tuesday, July 19, 2011 from 6-8 p.m. at Roundtree Funeral Home.

Wallace Lawson Jernigan
Mr. Wallace Lawson Jernigan, 86, passed away Saturday, July 9, 2011, at Clinch Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Jernigan was born June 23, 1925, in Jesup, Georgia, to the late Fred W. Jernigan and Sammie Bishop Jernigan. He was preceded by his wife, Carolyn Moore Jernigan and one sister, Betty Welch.
Mr. Jernigan graduated from Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Georgia in February 1946 with a “Bachelor of Civil Engineering” degree. He went in business with his father in Homerville Georgia as an apiarist and funeral director. He also served four years as county surveyor for Clinch County. In 1954 he was appointed as a commission agent for Standard Oil Company and was engaged in selling and distributing petroleum products for the ensuing 15 years. During that time, in 1958 he was elected to the Georgia State Senate without opposition. As a State Senator he was appointed Chairman of the Senate Committee on Educational Matters. He received wide recognition for his service as Chairman of the Senate Interim Committee known as the “Jernigan Committee”. This committee promoted legislation and administrative procedures designed to improve quality in education emphasizing new criteria for determining teacher pay. At that time the Georgia Constitution did not allow a senator to succeed himself, so he was elected in 1962 (again without opposition) as State Representative from Clinch County Georgia. He resigned from the House of Representatives to become Executive Secretary to the Honorable S. Ernest Vandiver, Governor of Georgia where he served until 1964. In 1961 House Resolution HR 315 was passed unanimously by the Georgia House of Representatives commending Wallace Jernigan for his outstanding contribution to the State of Georgia, especially in the field of education.
In 1966 he managed the successful Congressional campaign for Williamson S. (Bill) Stuckey and served 6 years in Washington, D.C. as Administrative Assistant to Congressman Stuckey (1967- 1973). In 1973 desiring to return to Georgia he served as District Representative for Congressman Stuckey remaining on the Congressional Staff for approximately 4 more years while living in Homerville, Georgia. In 1973 he received a National Association of Securities Dealers license. As Administrative Assistant he supervised the congressional staff including legislative study and recommendations, public relations, including speech writing and editing, publishing a tabloid size congressional newspaper, maintaining contact with state and local officials, maintaining liaison with federal agencies including FmHA for district projects. During the time he served as Executive Secretary for the Executive Department of Georgia and as a member of a congressional staff, he gained a broad knowledge of federal and state programs and the people administrating those programs. Some of the federal and state officials he came to know were former presidents Truman, Johnson, Ford and Carter. He received a special citation from President Ford for his efforts in successfully writing and promoting legislation to place the Okefenokee Swamp in the “National Wilderness System”. His biographical sketch also appeared in Marquis “Who’s Who in Government” in its first edition in 1972.
In 1977 when Congressman Stuckey retired from Congress, Mr. Jernigan joined FmHA as a County Supervisor serving Nassau and Duval counties in Florida. In 1983 he was promoted to District Loan Specialist for District IV in Florida which covered Central Florida. In 1985 he received a certificate of merit from FmHA for outstanding performance in his work. He retired from FmHA on June 30, 1987 with a commendation from FmHA Administrator, Vance Clark.
After retirement he worked for Jay Shaw Realty Company as a certified real estate agent. He was President of the Men’s Christian Alliance, member of the Farm Bureau Board of Directors, Chairman of the Clinch County Democratic Committee, past Clinch County Citizen of the Year and the 2000 Richard B. Russell Service Award from the Georgia Democratic Party. He was a long time member of the Homerville First Baptist Church, where he was recently was awarded Deacon Emeritus. He also helped form an orchestra for the church. His love for music started at an early are playing saxophone with many bands including Botie Chitty and The Singing Americans. In 2011 he was co-author of “Those Smoke-Filled Rooms”, a biography of his youth and political services for the State of Georgia
Survivors are his daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and John “Wink” Strickland of Homerville; three grandchildren, Amy and Craig Hunt of Greenville, S.C., DeAnna and Matt Courson of Mayday, Ga. and John Strickland of Homerville; three great-grandchildren, Sam Hunt and Caroline Hunt of Greenville, S.C. and Maddie Courson of Mayday, and several other relatives.
Services for Mr. Jernigan were held Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at 11 a.m. from the Homerville First Baptist Church.
Officiating was Roy Rhodes, Rev. Ken Johns and Rev. Chip Fuller.
Active pallbearers were Phil Henderson, Franklin Patton, Jason Shaw, Mitchell Moore, Larry Moore, and Freddy Welch.
Honorary pallbearers were Deacons, Sunday School Class, Bill Buckhaults, Tom Chambers, Chuck Rice, and Dr. Roger Huelsnitz.

Elizabeth Ann Royals
Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Royals, 57, passed away Saturday, July 9, 2011 at her residence after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by her loving family.
Mrs. Royals was born November 4, 1953 in Atkinson County to Evelyn Zorn, Florence, S.C., and the late Emmett Zorn. She was a shipping clerk for Lee Container before her illness and was a member of the Covenant Outreach Ministries. She was preceded in death by one son, Brandon Shane Royals.
Survivors other than her mother are her husband, Randall Benjamin Royals, of Dupont; two daughters and a son-in-law, Rebecca Joan “Becky” and Don Wetherington of Hahira, and Brittany Nicole “Nikki” Spivey of Dupont; two sons, Randall Andrew “Andy” Royals of Dupont and Derek Allie Royals of Douglas; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Elaine and Jimmy Brown and Ailene and Tim Lumpkin all of Pearson, and Teresa and Arthur Harris of Lumber City, Ga.; two brothers and sister-in-law, Harvey and Patty Zorn of Irwinville, Ga. and John Zorn of Florence S.C.; five grandchildren, Hannah Wetherington, Anisa Royals, Megan Wetherington, Brandon Royals and Gabe Royals, and several other relatives.
Services for Mrs. Royals were held Wednesday, July 13, 2011, at 11 a.m. from the Dupont Baptist Church.
Officiating was Rev. Edwin O'Quinn.
Curtis Chapman sang "Yours" and Dee Bondurant sang "Amazing Grace".
Active pallbearers were Kenny Smith, Sean McCall, Ronnie Johns, Chuck Balance, Brock Wilson and Danny Leccese.
iIntermentwill be in the North cemetery near Dupont.

David 'Ira' Steedley
Mr. David Ira Steedley, 86, passed away Saturday, July 9, 2011, at his residence after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving family.
Mr. Steedley was born July 10, 1924 in Clinch County to the late David Ford “Dave” Steedley and Nancy Lucinda Roland Steedley. Mr. Steedley was a retired carpenter and a veteran of the U. S. Army. He attended the New Prospect Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by one sister, Sara Bell Cason; four brothers, Henry Steedley, Oscar Steedley, Frank Steedley and Little Carey Steedley.
Survivors are his wife of 62 years, Betty Singleton Steedley of Argyle; four daughters and son-in-law: Pam Bennett of Oklahoma City, Okla., Sara and Steve Lott of Douglas, Ga., Robin Culpepper of Argyle, and Lynn Bell of Homerville; one son and daughter-in-law, David Ira “June Bug” and Vickey Steedley of Homerville; 11 grandchildren, Iris Steedley Vaughn, Little Ira Steedley, John Steedley, Carey Joyner, Jason Bennett, Amy Rogers, David Inman, Scott Inman, Brandy Clement, Henry Steedley and James (Boo) Steedley, 29 great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren and several other relatives.
Services for Mr. Steedley were held Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at 3 p.m. from the New Prospect Methodist Church.
Officiating was Rev. Dewayne Tanner and Rev. William Musgrove.
Little Ira Steedley sang "Beulah Land" and "Stroll Over Heaven With You", Danny Holmes sang "Go Rest High On That Mountain".
Active pallbearers were grandsons, Tom Clement, Henry Steedley, Scott Inman Jr., Brian Vaughn and John Steedley.

Jack Delos 'J.D.' O'Quinn
Mr. Jack Delos “J. D.” O’Quinn, 89, passed away Monday, July 11, 2011 at Clinch Memorial Hospital.
Mr. O’Quinn was born October 15, 1921 in Lowndes County to the late Hardy Edmond O’Quinn and Effie Louise Taylor O’Quinn. He was a member of the Homerville First Baptist Church and attended the DuPont Baptist Church. He worked 15 years for The Clinch County News then went to work for the United Postal Service and retired as postmaster of Mansfield, Ga. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving in the 357th Fighter Group, 8th Air Force as a staff sergeant and fought in the Battle of Bulge from December 16, 1944 through January 25, 1945. He was a Mason and Shriner, was an avid golfer, liked hunting and fishing and transporting of children to Shriners Children’s Hospital. He was very active in the community having served on several boards, including the Hospital and Voter Registration Boards. He was preceded in death by one sister, Lorene Strickland.
Survivors are his wife, Muriel Zeigler O’Quinn of Homerville; one daughter, Gwen O. Davis of Homerville; one son and daughter-in-law, Edwin and Carolyn O’Quinn of Homerville; three grandchildren, Greg and Christie Davis, David O’Quinn and Daniel and Nora O’Quinn; five great-grandchildren, Molly Davis, Maggie Davis, Jack O’Quinn, Bradley O’Quinn, and Penelope O’Quinn; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Services for Mr. O’Quinn were held Thursday, July 14, 2011 11 a.m. from the DuPont Baptist Church.
Officiating was Rev. Edwin O'Quinn.
Active pallbearers were Mervin Bennett, Hal Bennett, Greg Davis, David O'Quinn, Daniel O'Quinn, and Bonnie Zeigler.
Honorary pallbearers were Masons.
W.G. Smith sang "Beulah Land" and Daniel Spivey sang "Amazing Grace".
iIntermentwill be in the Wayfare Church Cemetery, Statenville, Ga.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Shriners Children’s Hospital.

Frank Carrillo
Mr. Frank Carrillo, 70, passed away Sunday, September 18, 2011, in the South Georgia Medical Center, Valdosta, following a short illness.
Mr. Carrillo was born December 30, 1940 in Modesto, Calf. He was a retired chief petty officer serving in the U. S. Navy.
Survivors are two sons, Paul Anthony Carrillo and Frank Manuell Carrillo both of Jacksonville, Fla.; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; several brothers and sisters; special friends Dwayne and Gina Stalvey of Homerville, Mike and Dene Penrod of Homerville.
Memorilization was by cremation.

Allen Nicholas Griffis
Mr. Allen Nicholas Griffis, 71, passed away Monday, September 19, 2011, at his residence following a short illness.
Mr. Griffis was born January 30, 1940, in Homerville, to the late Samuel Leland Griffis and LuMae Pittman Griffis. He was a retired log truck driver for C & M Logging Company.
Survivors are one daughter and son-in-law of Scarlet Diane and Jerry Riggins, Pearson; two sons and daughters-in-law; Jessie Leland and Colleen Griffis of Pearson and Charles Allen and Melissa Joy Griffis of Millwood; two sisters, Minnie Jean Kelly of Valdosta and Willie Mae Saylor of MacClenny, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and several other relatives.
Services for Mr. Griffis were held Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at 2 p.m. from the Lighthouse Assembly of God.
Officiating was Rev. Donald Stalvey and Rev. Keith Chauncey.
Internment was in the Ramah Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Chris Griffis, Curt Griffis, Dusty Roberson, Wesley Luke, Jadon Daniel, Eddie Cribb and Allen Sessoms.
A CD of "Please Forgive Me", by Jason Crabb was played and W. G. Smith sang, "Amazing Grace".

Thelma Griffis Williams Maxwell
Mrs. Thelma Griffis Williams Maxwell, 83, passed away Monday, September 26, 2011, in the Clinch HealthCare Center, following an extended illness.
Mrs. Maxwell was born December 27, 1927, in Clinch County to the late Arthur Griffis and Estella Highsmith Griffis. She was a member of the Homerville United Methodist Church, Clinch Memorial Hospital Pink Ladies and the Eastern Star. She was a retired secretary for the Clinch Memorial Hospital. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Buster Martin Williams; one daughter, Penny Williams Henderson; three brothers, J. T. Griffis, Jack Griffis and Elroy Griffis; three sisters, Rheuna Griffis, Inez Bennett and Mae Booth.
Survivors are her husband, William V. “Bill” Maxwell of Homerville; one daughter and son-in-law, Bonny and Henry Moylan of Homerville; one son-in-law and wife, Richard and Lori Henderson of Waycross; two step-daughters and husbands, Janet and Bruce Ballard of Lilburn, Ga. and Laura and Hugh Veal, of Charleston, S.C.; one step-son and wife, Rev. Chris and Debbie Maxwell of Royston, Ga.; three grandsons and wives, Clay and Sharonna Moylan of Homerville, Truman and Amanda Henderson of Bainbridge, Ga. and Britt Henderson of Waycross; one granddaughter, Heidi Moylan of Valdosta; three great-grandchildren: Trey Henderson and Noah Henderson of Bainbridge and Aiden Moylan of Homerville; one great-granddaughter, Vanessa Moylan of Homerville; eight step-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Rubye G. Sims of Waycross and Lunette G. and Verlin Ritch of Homerville; one brother and sister-in-law, George Owen and Sarah Griffis of Homerville; and several other relatives.
Services for Mrs. Maxwell will be held Wednesday, Septembere 28, 2011, at 11 a.m. from the Homerville United Methodist Church.
Internment will be in the Shiloh Church Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, September 27, 2011 from 6 until 8 p.m. at Roundtree Funeral Home.
