J. D. Lott, 88, died Sunday morning (01-04-04) at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida after a short illness. He was born and reared in Coffee County Georgia, son of the late Maxie Lott and Pauline Crenshaw Lott. He had lived most of his life in Waycross where he retired from the Waycross Railroad Shops as a Machinist with thirty-six years service. He was a Deacon at Crawford Street Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School and served on the Board of Trustees. Mr. Lott was an avid hunter and fisherman.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years Aline Tyler Lott of Waycross; two sons Archie Lott, wife Willene and Jerry Lott, wife Cheryl all of Brunswick, Ga.; two grandsons Richie Lott of St. Simons Island, Ga. and Daryl Lott of Brunswick, Ga., four great grandchildren, Sidney Lott, Cameron Lott both of St. Simons, Taylor Lott, Austin Lott both of Brunswick, ; a number of nieces, nephews and other
relatives.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning (01-06-04) at eleven o’clock at the Crawford Street Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Evergreen cemetery in Fitzgerald, Ga. at three p.m. on Tuesday. The family will receive friends at the Miles-Odum Funeral Home from six until eight o’clock Monday night and have requested that memorials be sent to the Crawford Street Baptist Church at 204 S. Crawford Street, Waycross Ga., 31501.
Mrs. Nellie Faye Knight

Mrs. Nellie Faye Knight, 83, of Waycross died Sunday morning at Satilla Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Born in Millwood to the late John Steedley and Fanny White Steedley she has made her home in the Ware County area for most of her life. She was a member of the Calvary United Pentecostal Church. Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband, Ervin Jules Thomas, her second husband, Willie B. Knight, a son, Talmadge Thomas and a daughter, Inez White.
Mrs. Knight is survived by two sons, Marshall Thomas and his wife Connie of Millwood, Raymond Thomas of Millwood, six daughters, Geraldine James and her husband Billy of Manor, Lavene Sweat and her husband David of Waycross, Debbie Jean Thomas of Blackshear, Nita Sweat and her husband George of Blackshear, Linda Wolfe and her husband Kim of Waycross, Brenda Gail Thomas of Waycross, a step-daughter, Mildred L. Godwin and her husband Lamar of Augusta, twenty one grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Calvary United Pentecostal Church, burial will follow in Booth cemetery in Manor. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday night at the Miles-Odum Funeral Home.
Leo D. Akins

Leo D. Akins, 81, died Thursday night (01-08-04) at Satilla Regional Medical Center after a short illness. He was born and reared in Bulloch County Georgia, son of the late Horace A. and Beatrice Nessmith Akins. He had made his home in Waycross since 1955, where he was a member of Crawford Street Baptist Church and was a Deacon and Sunday School Teacher. He retired in 1991 from the Georgia Power Company with forty-five years of service and was a veteran of World War II where he served with the Army and received a Purple Heart. He was preceded in death by a brother and sister-in-law Leffler and Lois Akins. Three brothers Ben Akins, Dedrick Akins and Hayward Akins.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-six years Esther Bryan Akins of Waycross; four daughters Denise Fain, husband Rodney of Valdosta, Ga., Jane Clanton, husband Frank of Inman, S. C., Marion Bowden, husband Bo of Easley, S. C. and Connie Whitacre, husband Doug of Lakeville, Minn.; two brothers Bernie Akins, wife Mildred of New Ellenton, S. C. and Ronald Akins, wife Pat of Belchertown, Mass.; five sisters Chris Birley, husband Bud of East Moline, Ill., Johnnie Wynn, husband Vernon of New Ellention, S. C., Sally Deal, husband Bunny of Statesboro, Ga., Babs McNure of Metter, Ga. and Bobbie Bennett of Houston, Tex.; an Uncle Paul Nessmith, wife Eloise of Statesboro, Ga.; four sisters-in-law Elsie Akins of Bath S. C., Georgia Baumann of Marietta, Ga., Harriette Wolfe of Washington, Ga. and Sandra Mathews, husband Buddy of Lexington, Ga.; eight grandchildren Karen Clanton of Charleston, S. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon (01-11-04) at three o'clock at Crawford Street Baptist Church. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Miles-Odum Funeral Home from six until eight o'clock Saturday night. Employees of Georgia Power are requested to serve as honorary pallbearers and are asked to gather at the church at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. The family has requested that memorials be sent to Southeast Cancer Unit Inc. P. O. Mrs. Leola Giddens Shepard

Mrs. Leola Giddens Shepard, 89, died (January 9, 2004) at Quality Health Center in Fernandina Beach, FL., after a lengthy illness.
She was a native of Atkinson County but had resided in Ware County most of her life. She was the daughter of the late Willie Giddens and Bessie Lee Solomon Giddens and the widow of the late James Franklin Shepard, Sr.
She was retired with Pic N Save and a member of Woodard Chapel Church.
Survivors include a son Franklin Shepard, Jr. of Fernandina Beach, FL., two sisters Mattie Bell Schuett of Waycross, Mary Rackley of Pelham, two granddaughters Cindy Maultsby of Orange Park, FL., Mocia Shepard of Fernandina Beach, FL.,
A service is planned for 11:00 am Monday in the Miles-Odum Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be held in Greenlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm Sunday afternoon at the funeral home.

Robert Eugene Lewis, 28, died Saturday (January 10, 2004) from injuries sustained in a traffic accident. He was a native of Charlottesville, Virginia although he had lived most of his life in Ware County. He was a graduate of the 1993 class of Ware County High School and was a supervisor for (EPR) Environmental Pipe Line in Brantley County.
Mr. Lewis is survived by his parents, James P. and Mary Lee Allen Williams, Waycross, four children, Sage and Steven Lewis, and their mother, Teresa Lewis, Douglas, Zachary Lewis, Waycross, Trenton Lee, Waycross, two brothers, James Aubrey Williams, Waycross, Jerry Lee Williams, Waycross, maternal grandmother, Violet Mae Edmonds, Milford, Virginia, paternal grandparents, James and Claudie Bell Williams, Yulee, FL, two nephews, A.J. and Luke Williams, Waycross, best friend, Dana Del, several aunts, uncles, and other relatives.

Bernice Viola Early, 78, of Waycross died Sunday at Baptist Village after an extended illness. She was a native of Chattanooga, TN and had lived in Waycross for the past 18 years. Mrs. Early was a homemaker and a member of Ocean Park Baptist Church at Jacksonville Beach and attended Jamestown Baptist Church and the Golden Age Ladies Sunday School Class for the past 18 years. Her parents were the late Jack and Lena Knox Tindle. Also preceding her in death was her husband Robert Early and a grandson, Alan Bragg.

Baynard C. Jacobson

Baynard C. Jacobson, 80, died Wednesday morning (01-14-04) at the Satilla Regional Medical Center after a short illness. He was born in Valdosta, Georgia, live most of his life in Waycross. Son of the late Morris Jacobson and Marie Lubetkin Jacobson and the widower of the late Esther Gilmore Jacobson. He was a graduate of Waycross High School and was presently working as a salesman with Walker-Jones. He was a former owner and operator with his brother Al Jacobson the Jacobson Department Store. He was a member of the Waycross Hebrew Center, Past President of Gov. David Emanuel Lodge of B’nai B’rith in Waycross in 1948 and was one of the founders. Elected vice president of the state B’nai B’rith in 1952 and was reelected in 1953 and was one of the founders of the Waycross Synagogue. He also was chairman of the Salvation Army Advisory Board from 1963 to 1965. During his Chairmanship the new officers quarters was built. In 1962 he was elected president of the Waycross-Ware County Chamber of Commerce and he turned the first spade of dirt in the building of the new chamber of commerce building. He was presented the Jack Williams Community Service award in 1975 at the annual meeting where the famous newscaster Paul Harvey was the speaker. He was preceded in death by a daughter Annette Jacobson and a son Larry Jacobson and a brother Jerry Jacobson.
He is survived by two sons Neal Jacobson, wife Deanna of Waverly, Ga. and Barry Jacobson, wife Renee of Waycross; a brother Al Jacobson, wife Ann of Waycross, a sister Anne Cooper, husband Raymond of DelRay Beach, Fla.; seven grandchildren Morris Adam Jacobson of Woodbine, Ga., Esther Renee Jacobson of Kingsland, Ga., Monica Bowen, husband Will and Ellen Ray Jacobson all of Blackshear, Ga., Challie Cooper, Myles Cooper and Caycee Cooper all of Waycross, Ga.; a great granddaughter Laycee Bowen of Blackshear, Ga.; a special friend Gloria Bates of Waycross, a number of Nieces, Nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held Thursday (01-15-04) at the graveside in Oakland Cemetery. The family has requested that memorials be sent to the Waycross Hebrew Center 610 Screven Ave., Waycross, Georgia 31501.

Agnes Burden Bernard

Agnes Burden Bernard, 49, of Waycross died Thursday evening at the St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Jacksonville, FL after an extended illness. She was a native of Detroit, Michigan. She lived in Purdon, TX for most of her life and moved to Waycross 6 months ago and was of the Baptist faith. Her parents were the late Jay Wesley Smith and Beverly Jean Burden Smith. She was also preceded in death by a granddaughter Stacy Mitchell.
She is survived by one daughter, Lisa Alcorn, three sons, Junior Mitchell, Donnie Wagner, and Chris Wagner, all of Waycross, four brothers, Al Burden, Umatilla, FL, John Smith, Michigan, Richard Smith, Windsor, Canada, Bill Smith, Monte Dora, FL, four sisters, Nancy Benetiz, Blackshear, Leila Hudmon, Umatilla, FL, Ella Campbell, Pine Hills, FL, Helen Yehle, Apopka, FL, a close friend, Mike Murchall, Waycross, nine grandchildren, two very special friends, Cassandra and Gary Mahoney, numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Roosevelt Strickland, 71, died Friday afternoon (01-16-04) at his residence after an extended illness. He was a life long resident of Ware County, son of the late Jesse Strickland and Mrs. Ella Kight Strickland and the widower of the late Amy Lee Henderson Strickland. He was a retired van driver with the Professional Transportation Service, which transported railroad employee.
He is survived by his mother Ella Kight Strickland of Waycross; five sons Johnnie Strickland, wife Betty Jo of Jacksonville, Fla., Wayne Strickland, wife Janice, Jackie Strickland, wife Kim all of Waycross, Freddie Strickland, wife Joan of Ft. Carson, Col. and Randy Strickland, wife Nancy of Folkston, Ga.; a daughter Lynn Meadows, husband David of Blackshear, a brother James Buddy Strickland of Waycross; two sisters Eloise Justice and Viola 'Vi' Dowling, husband Estees all of Waycross; a half sister Angela Hiott, husband Marvin of Waycross; a half brother James Aaron Howell of Waycross; twenty-one grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Clara Lorena (McDaniel) Garrison Mangrum

Clara Lorena (McDaniel) Garrison Mangrum, 88, died Thursday (01-15-04) at the residence of her daughter in West Jordan, Utah after a short illness. She was born July 17, 1915 in Sappville, Georgia, daughter of the late Dawson McDaniel and Clara Wilson McDaniel and at the age of two she moved with her family to Waresboro, Georgia. She met and married
Lloyd Otterbein Garrison in Tampa, Fla., where she spent the majority of her life. She was a writer and school teacher and spent her life pursuing education and knowledge. She was the only teacher in her school district to administer President Kennedy's Manpower Development program. She retired from the Veterans Administration in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1983 and returned to Tampa where she lived until 1998 when she moved to West Jordan, Utah, She was always proud of her Scotch-Irish ancestry and that her forebears help to settle Waycross. She was greatly beloved and will be greatly missed.
She is survived by two daughters Barbara Forbes-Moore, husband David of Plant City, Fla., and Nancy Wininger, husband Larry of West Jordan, Utah; two brothers Derrell McDaniel, wife Iva Lee of Waycross and Coeburn McDaniel, wife Shirley of Goodlettsville, Tenn.; a sister Marie Harris of Phoenix City, Ala.; five grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, a number of niece, nephews and other relatives.

Myrtice (Aspinwall) Bennett, 94 of Waycross died Friday morning at Baptist Village after a brief illness. She was a native of Appling County and had lived in Waycross for most of her life. After raising her children as a seamstress and homemaker she worked with her husband Louis J. Bennett at Bennett Brothers. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Susannah Wesley Sunday School Class. Her parents were the late Ellis and Mattie Belle Ammons Aspinwall. In addition to her husband she was also preceded in death by her daughter Blanche Snodgrass, two grandchildren, David Sellers and Donnie Sellers.
Survivors include one son James 'Boe' Lawhorne, wife Flo, Fayetteville, GA, four sisters, Mabel Owens, Odum, GA, Maude Karaway, Rock Island, Illinois, Melba Aldrich and Mary Herndon, both of Appling County, six grandchildren, Jimmy Sellers, Jacksonville, Jay Lawhorne, Hoboken, Mary Kellie Landoll, Ponte Vedra, FL, Anna Frances Mangum, Blackshear, Eugenia Petty, Brunswick, Joey Snodgrass, West Monroe, LA, nine great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Martha Jane Sweat, 72, died Saturday afternoon (06-12-04) at Baptist Village after an extended illness. She was born in Ware County, daughter of the late John R. Hall and Pauline Proctor Hall and the widow of the late Carl Leslie Sweat, Jr. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Howard. She had lived most of her life in Waycross where she served as a sitter at Baptist Village for many years and attended Kettle Creek Church.
She is survived by two daughters Diane Petty, husband Scottie and Charlotte Sapp, husband Ernest all of Waycross, two sons Neil Sweat, wife Melaney of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and Larry Sweat of Quitman, Mississippi, two brothers Lavaughn Hall of Millwood, Georgia and Joe Hall of El Paso, Texas, three sisters Laverne Adkins of Waycross, Bertha Steedley of Blackshear, Georgia, Thelma Thornton of Offerman, Georgia, eleven grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
