Mary Groover Brinson, 93
TWIN CITY--Funeral for Mary Groover Brinson, 93, was held Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Twin City with Rev. Franklin Sasser and Rev. Stephen Cook officiating. Burial was in The Brinson Cemetery. She died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005 at her daughter’s residence in Morrow after an extended illness.
Mrs. Brinson was born in Bulloch County on Jan. 10, 1912 to the late Samuel Charlton and Mollie Drew Groover. She was a homemaker and teacher, a member of Twin City Baptist Church and Ida Belle Williams Book Club. She was also a member of the Adam Brinson Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Jon Ivy Brinson.
Survivors include a daughter, Martha Ann Wells, and husband Ed, of Morrow; and two grandchildren, Ann Wells of Canton; and John Wells of Morrow.
Pallbearers were Robert Overstreet, Lewis Brinson, Danny Faircloth, Jim Mercer, George Sturgis and Loy D. Cowart.

Lillian Kirby Klein, 65
RIDGELAND, S.C.--Funeral for Lillian Kirby Klein, 65, was held Monday Jan. 31, 2005 at 11 a.m. at Swainsboro Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Tommy Rountree and Elder Howard Cox officiating. Burial was in New Hope Primitive Baptist Church cemetery with Rev. Earl Warnock officiating. She died at her daughter’s residence in Ridgeland, S.C. on Friday, Jan. 28 , 2005 after an extended illness.
Mrs. Klein was a native of Greenville S.C. and daughter of the late Otis Lee and Irine Cain Kirby. She was employed by Lynn and Bob’s Bar-B-Q in Swainsboro, a homemaker and a member of the Swainsboro Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include four daughters, Valerie Klein of Hilton Head Island S.C.; Cynthia K. Travis of Swainsboro; Lisa Woods of Ridgeland S.C.; and Renee Mills of Ridgeland S.C.; four sisters, Margaret Smith of Swainsboro; Christine Daniels of Nunez; and Bobbie Jean Riner and Jeanette Webb both of Swainsboro; two brothers, Joe Kirby of Swainsboro; and Jerry Kirby of Pooler; and 12 grandchildren
Pallbearers were Stevie Riner, Bruce Kirby, Tyson Webb, Mark Kirby, James Wilson and Jeff Kirby.

Elnita Sanders, 68
SWAINSBORO--Funeral for Elnita Sanders, 68, was held Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005 at Trinity Baptist Church at 3 p.m. with Rev. H.L. Frison officiating. Burial was in Swainsboro City Cemetery. She died Jan. 19, 2005.
Ms. Sanders was born to the late Elgin and Beulah Sanders on Aug. 23, 1936. She was a church mother at Endtime Pentecostal Church in Portal and a former employee at Emanuel County Senior center. Preceding her in death was her son, Lloyd Bell.
Survivors include three daughters, Cathy Brown, Dorothy Fann and Joann Wright of Swainsboro; two sons, Timmy Sanders and Jimmy Ricks, of Swainsboro; two sisters, Annie Willie Rainey and Rosie Pearl Freeman of Swainsboro; two brothers, Arthur Lee Sanders and Vann Wadley of Swainsboro; 18 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Horace Fuller, Jerry Waters, Leon Ricks, Michael Frison, Harrison Freeman and Tyson Hackett.

Hilda B. Wiggins Cook, 86
GARFIELD--Funeral for Hilda Boatright Wiggins Cook, 86, was held Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005 at 3 p.m. at Garfield Baptist Church with Rev. Grady Walden officiating. Burial was in Hebron cemetery in Garfield. She died in Aiken, S.C. on Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2005.
Born in Jeff Davis County on Aug. 29, 1918, she was the oldest daughter of Lewis and Eva Mae (Smith) Boatright. She was reared in Emanuel County and lived her retirement in Garfield. She had recently moved to Aiken, S.C. because of failing health and died at the home of her daughter and son-in-law with family members at her bedside. She married
Eschol Vernon Wiggins in Millen on Jan. 21, 1935. They moved to Portsmouth, Va. in 1940 and reared three children there. After her retirement from J.C. Penney’s in 1976, they returned to Emanuel County. She and Eschol celebrated 60 years of marriage before his death. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by sisters Vera and Mildred Boatright; brothers J.P. and Harold D. Boatright; and grandson Barry Wiggins. She was a member of Garfield Baptist Church and served as WMU director for 15 years; a member of Washington Circle, Adam Brinson Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Garfield Community Club and Red Hat Society.
Survivors include her husband, Howard L. Cook of Millen; son, Vernon Wiggins and wife Joan of Cochran; daughters, Mary Wiggins Bowman and husband Marvin of Aiken, S.C.; and Donna Wiggins Russell and husband Carl of Anchorage, Alaska; a sister, Lora Boatright Flowers of Riverside, Fla.; sister-in-law, Mildred Hendrix Boatright of Garfield; seven grandchildren, Mark Wiggins, Amy Wiggins Lee, Laura Bowman, Robert E. Bowman, Kimberly Russell Brown, Susan Russell Withers and Paul Russell; nine great-grandchildren, Jackie and John Wiggins, Cohen and Veronica Lee, Hunter and Reed Brown and Jake, Allison and Russell Withers; a stepson, Roy Cook and wife Vickie of Millen; and many nieces and nephews.

Otis “Shorty” Phillips, 85
LYONS--Funeral for Otis “Shorty” Phillips was held Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Hodges-Moore Funeral Home in Statesboro with Rev. Ken Morgan officiating. Burial was in Emit Grove Church Cemetery. He died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005 at Toombs County Nursing Home in Lyons.
Mr. Phillips was a native of Toombs County and lived most of his life in Oak Park where he was a member of Oak Park Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his son, Bobby Alderman and his grandson, Steve Alderman.
Survivors include his wife, Nettie Salter Phillips of Oak Park; two daughters, Elaine Strange of Oak Park; and Kathleen Nettis of Metter; a son, John Johnson of Cobbtown; a sister, Gladys Wilkes of Oak Park; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Samuel Williams, 67
BROOKLYN, NEW YORK--Funeral for Samuel Williams, 67, was held Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005 at 1 p.m. at Rountree Island Baptist Church in Emanuel County with Rev. Richard Lawrence Jr. officiating. Burial was in Kirkland cemetery in Summertown. He died Friday, Jan. 21, 2005 at Long Island College Hospital in Long Island, N.Y. after an extended illness.
Mr. Williams was a native of Emanuel County where he attended public schools and joined St. Paul Methodist Church in Summertown. He moved to Brooklyn, N.Y. as a young adult where he joined the Emanuel Baptist Church and was employed with New York City Housing Authority for 27 years.
Survivors include his wife, Eula Pearl Williams of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three sons, Talib Abdul Khabir of Waldorf, Md.; and Maurice Williams and Wayne Dickson of Brooklyn, NY.; two daughters, Saché Jacks of Fayetteville; and Yvette Dobbs of Schenectady, N.Y.; five brothers, Roy Williams, Clarence Williams and Johnny O’Neal Williams of Swainsboro; Joseph Williams of Atlantic City, N.Y.; and Lonzo Williams of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three sisters, Melrose Allen and Mamie Allen of Summertown; and Ola Bell Williams of New York City, N.Y.; several grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

EVANS--Funeral for Mrs. Susie Wilson Morgan, 86, was held Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2004 at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Twin City with Rev. Wayne MacDonald and Rev. Randall Smith officiating. Burial was in Twin City City Cemetery. She died Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004 at Morningside Assisted Living Home in Evans after an extended illness.
Mrs. Morgan was a native of Aiken County, S.C. and was owner and operator of Morgan Department Store in Twin City. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Morgan. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Twin City.
Survivors include three sons, Michael Morgan of Homestead, Fla.; Chris Morgan of Baker, Fla.; and Steven Morgan of Mandeville, La.; one sister, Ellender Ramsey of Atlanta; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Annel (Hargrove) Jones, 93
SWAINSBORO--Funeral for “Mother” Annel (Hargrove) Jones was held Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004 at Swainsboro-Emanuel County Auditorium at 11 a.m. with Bishop Martin L. Johnson officiating and Bishop Theodore N. Brown and Elder D.G. Mosley assisting. Burial was in Jones Family cemetery in Promiseland. She died Monday, Dec. 6, 2004.
Mrs. Jones was born on Jan. 28, 1911 to the late Alma and Joe Hargrove. She attended school in Emanuel County through eighth grade. She was a member of Ohoopee Grove Church and William Grove Church of the Living God.
Survivors include six daughters and three sons, Mrs. Mattie Crosby of Portland, Oregon; Maudine Williams of San Francisco, Calif.; Joel Jones of Swainsboro; Benjamin Jones of Eggharbor, N.J.; Carolyn Nash of San Francisco, Calif.; Dolly J. Frazier-Jones of Augusta; Amelia Boyd of Lynchburg, Va.; Lee Jones Jr. and Bertha McSween of Swainsboro; 28 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Jody Anne Whetsell, 21
TWIN CITY--Funeral for Jody Anne Whetsell, 21, will be held Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2004 at 2 p.m. at Twin City First Baptist Church in Twin City with Rev. Franklin Sasser and Rev. John Strickland officiating. The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the Whetsell Twin City City Cemetery. She died Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004, at Memorial Hospital in Savannah after a brief illness.
Miss Whetsell was valedictorian of the 2001 graduating class at David Emanuel Academy in Stillmore where she participated in various activities including basketball and softball. She was a senior at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro and had applied to the veterinarian school at the University of Georgia in Athens. She volunteered at the Bulloch Veterinarian Clinic in Statesboro. Jody placed 12th in barrel racing at the 2004 World National Horse Association competition held in Augusta Nov. 6, 2004. She was a member of Twin City First Baptist Church in Twin City.
Survivors include her parents, John Wayne Whetsell Sr. and Judy Whetsell of Twin City; two brothers, John E. Whetsell II and John Wayne Whetsell Jr. of Twin City; and grandparents, Betty and Bob Anderson and Lousie Whetsell of Twin City.
Pallbearers are Jason Henry, Chet Chester, Greg Johnson Jr., Matthew McNeely, Britt Claxton and Cooper Fields.

BONAIRE--Funeral for Amy Delee (Sparks) Julien, 27, was held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 10, 2004 at the Chapel of McCullough Funeral Home in Warner Robins with burial following in Hebron Primitive Baptist Church cemetery in Garfield. She died Dec. 6, 2004.
Mrs. Sparks was born June 27, 1977 in Swainsboro to Henry and Patricia Sparks. She attended Harvest Methodist Church and was a Georgia College and State University graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree. She was preceded in death by grandparents, Loye and Reba Johnson.
Survivors include her husband, David Julien of Bonaire; her parents Henry and Patricia Sparks, of Bonaire; a daughter, Alyssa Brooke Julien of Bonaire; a sister, Julie Ann Sparks of Bonaire; and her grandparents, Henry and Helen Sparks of Metter.

Lydia Mae Murphy, 93
SWAINSBORO--Funeral for Mrs. Lydia Mae Murphy, 93, will be held Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2004 at 2 p.m. at Hillcrest Baptist Church with Rev. Neil Stich, Rev. Bill Thompson and Dr. Robert Blankenship officiating. Burial will be held in Swainsboro City Cemetery. She died Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004 at Swainsboro Nursing Home.
Mrs. Murphy was born in Johnson County and was the wife of the late James Murphy. She was a homemaker and a charter member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, where she was instrumental in organizing the church when it began in Mrs. Bill’s Café on Highway 1 North. She organized the first Bible school and was included in the Hall of Fame of Southern Baptist Convention in April 1992. She retired after 25 years of adult choir service and from teaching after 44 years of service at Dellwood Methodist Church, Blundale Baptist Church and Hillcrest Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Cecil Murphy Sr.; a daughter, Evelyn Murphy Hayes; a grandson, James M. Hayes; and her parents, Jack and Clara Knight.
Survivors include three daughters, Jonnie Boulineau of Swainsboro; Mary Kent of Swainsboro; and Tessie Greenway of Bartow; a son, Jimmy C. Murphy of Swainsboro; a sister, Ollie R. Weeks of Lizella; 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Ware was a native of Emanuel County and a homemaker. She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church and wife of the late Dudley Ware.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Paula and Joe Reeves, Jr. of Swainsboro; one sister, Virginia Williams of Kite; two grandchildren and their spouses, Johnathan and Samantha Bailes of South Riding, Va.; and Paula Michelle and Mark Rountree of Swainsboro.

Martha Lee Flanders, 80
SWAINSBORO--Funeral for Martha Lee Flanders, 80, was held Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004 at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Tomlinson Funeral Home with Rev. Allen Meeks officiating. Burial was in Sardis Cemetery. She died Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004 at Emanuel Medical Center.
Mrs. Flanders was born in Johnson County and had lived in Cambridge, Mass. for many years. She lived in Swainsboro for the past 25 years. She worked in the textile industry as a seamstress. She was a Baptist by faith.
Survivors include a daughter, Laverne Flanders Mixon and husband, Bill, of Kite; two sisters, Delores Waters of Statesboro; and Catherine Durden of Tifton; two grandsons, William Mixon Jr. of Kite; and Nathan Mixon of Statesboro.
