Mary (Hall) Lerwick, 77
TWIN CITY--Memorial service for Mary Hall Lerwick, 77, was held Monday, Dec. 20, 2004 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Peebles-Curry-Durden Mortuary with Elder Tommy Rountree officiating. The body was cremated and ashes will be buried at the family plot in Twin City City Cemetery. She died Dec. 16, 2004 after an extended illness.
Mrs. Lerwick was born in Emanuel County Sept. 27, 1927. She graduated from Swainsboro High School and attended Brenau College in Gainesville. She graduated from Swainsboro Technical College and was a retired Licensed Practical Nurse. She was a lover of all animals but had a particular passion for cats. She was preceded in death by her father, Willie Hall; mother, Annie Laura Hayes; and sister, Lottie Jean Hall.
Survivors include a daughter, Debra Lerwick Bays of Savannah; a son, Quentin Lerwick of Milwaukee, Wis.; a sister, Betty “Pete” Anderson of Twin City; a granddaughter, Tina Purvis of Twin City; a great-grandson, Seth Frederick of Twin City; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Flowers will be accepted or donations to the Humane Society.

Carolyn Durden, 64
SWAINSBORO--Funeral for Carolyn Durden, 64, was held Monday, Dec. 27, 2004 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Southern Heritage Funeral Home with Elder Tom Rountree, Rev. Robert Webb, Rev. Donnie Bush and Rev. Kelmer Durden officiating. Burial was in Swainsboro City Cemetery. She died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2004 at Emanuel Medical Center.
Ms. Durden was born May 8, 1940 and was a lifelong resident of Emanuel County. She was a beautician and attended Swainsboro Church of God. She was preceded in death by her parents, Morris L. Durden Sr. and Mattie Bush Durden.
Survivors include a daughter, Kathy Love of Swainsboro; a grandson, Tyler Edwards of Swainsboro; five brothers, Rev. Kelmer Durden and Johnny Durden of Swainsboro; William “Bill” Durden of Stockbridge; Morris L. Durden Jr. of Augusta; and Marlon Durden on Conyers.
Pallbearers were Curtis Durden, Mike Durden, Leon Durden, Timothy Durden, Marvey Durden, John Durden, Lemuel Durden, Allen Durden and Kelmer Durden Jr.

Myrtle Peebles Curry, 79
SWAINSBORO--Funeral for Myrtle Peebles-Curry, 79, was held Friday, Dec. 17, 2004 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Southern Heritage Funeral Home with Rev. Ray Jenkins and Rev. Marty McLeod officiating. Burial was in Eastbrook cemetery in Swainsboro. She died Dec. 15, 2004 at Swainsboro Nursing Home after a brief illness.
Mrs. Curry was born in Emanuel County and a member of Calvary United Methodist Church. She served as treasurer of Shellman’s Bluff Baptist Church. She was a licensed funeral director and a member of Georgia Funeral Director Association. She was co-founder of Peebles-Curry Mortuary Inc. and Curry’s Feed and Seed Store of Swainsboro and Little River Sportsman Camp at Clarkhill Lake.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, J. Gary and Lois S. Curry of Midville; a son-in-law, Wayne Sammons and wife Tammy of Swainsboro; four grandchildren, Matthew W. Sammons, Shea Sammons, Julie Holloway and Ryleigh Holloway. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Edmond Curry, and their daughter, Sherry Curry Sammons.
Pallbearers were nephews Dr. Jimmy Peebles, David Curry, Bobby Peebles, Roger Peebles, Jeffery Peebles and Donald Peebles.

Lanie Mae Thomas Walden, 93
SWAINSBORO--Funeral for Lanie Mae (Lannie) Thomas Walden, 93, was held Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004 at Swainsboro-Emanuel County Auditorium at 11 a.m. with Bishop Rebecca Fletcher and Bishop Charles E. Campbell presiding. Burial was in Adrian cemetery in Adrian. She died Dec. 10, 2004.
Ms. Walden was a resident of Swainsboro since 1946. She was educated in the public school system in Adrian and Swainsboro. She worked on the farm, was a domestic worker, a government aide, a community servant, a midwife and a seamstress. She also helped in the operation of the family businesses for many years.
Survivors include her children, Albert Walden of Philadelphia, Penn.; Elma Spearman of Detroit, Mich.; and Homer Lee Walden Jr.; five sisters, Fannie Lee Williams and Marie Harris of Swainsboro; Sarah Reddick and Izola Thomas of Miami, Fla.; and Rev. Pecolia Gillis of Bridgeton, N.J.; two brothers, James D. Thomas of Bridgeton, N.J.; and Booker T. Thomas of Pennsgrove, N.J.; 23 grandchildren, 66 great-grandchildren and 46 great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Gerald Nichols, Harold Dean Nichols, Ricky Washington, Enrico Walden, Lagonza Hayward and Darrell Ricky Spearman. Honorary pallbearers were grandsons.

CANOOCHEE--Funeral for Hattie Lee Ila Jones, 58, was held Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004 at 2 p.m. at Holy Zion Holiness Church in Metter with Pastor Johnny Ray Jones Sr. and Bishop Cecil Newton officiating. Burial was in Mt. Gilead cemetery in Canoochee. She died Dec. 11, 2004.
Mrs. Jones was born in Emanuel County on Sept. 29, 1946. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Madison and Hattie Bell Williams. She was preceded in death by her sister, Juanita DeVose.
Survivors include her husband, Pastor Johnny Ray Jones; five daughters, Mary Stevens of Augusta; Felicia and Malinda Jones of Jacksonville, Fla.; Bertha Braziel of Metter; and Amanda Jones of Twin City; four sons, Johnny Ray Jones Jr. and Timothy Jones of Alexandria, Va.; Gregory Jones of Jacksonville, N.C.; and Christopher Jones of Twin City; two sisters, Ruby Robertson of Providence, R.I.; and Bertha Palmer Hicks of Louisville; three brothers, James Williams of Yeardon, Penn.; Joseph Williams and Willie Edward Williams of Philadelphia, Penn.

Mary Lewis Turner
SWAINSBORO--Funeral for Mary Lewis Turner was held Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004 at 1 p.m. at Ohoopee Grove Baptist Church in Nunez with Pastor Eugene Davis officiating and Rev. Keith Moore assisting. Burial was in Flat Ford cemetery in Nunez. She died Friday, Dec. 17, 2004 at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta after an extended illness.
Mrs. Turner was a native of Emanuel County where she attended public schools. She was a member of Ohoopee Grove Baptist Church for many years.
Survivors include her husband, George Turner of Swainsboro; two sons, Curtis Lewis and James Webb of Swainsboro; five daughters, Bessie Warren of College Park; Marilyn Lewis, Gwendolyn Brantley and Mary Smith of Dublin; and Laura Gibson of Wadley; a sister, Adell Smith of Columbus; three brothers, A.J. Lewis of Crescent City, Fla.; Ira Lewis of Swainsboro; and Aldof Lewis of Winter Haven, Fla.; nine stepdaughters, three stepsons, 18 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Harriet J. Scott
THOMASVILLE--Services for Harriet J. Scott of Pavo were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004 at Allen & Allen Funeral Chapel in Thomasville. The Rev. Larry Harris officiated and interment was in Laurel Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Scott died Dec. 20, 2004 at her residence.
Born May 24, 1917 in Youngstown, Ohio, she was the daughter of Harmon C. and Gertrude Miller Welch. She was married
to Walter U. Scott, who preceded her in death. Mrs. Scott was a retired School Counselor at Thomasville High School and a member of Pavo Baptist Church, NEA and GAE.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Walter Harmon and Sharon Scott; grandchildren, Walter Harmon Scott, Jr. of Jesup; and Mary Susan Scott Casey of Statesboro; great-grandchildren, Savannah Scott, Cierra Scott of Jesup; and Anna Casey, Brittany Casey, Candace Casey and Trey Casey all of Statesboro. A sister, Corrine Beard, preceded her in death.

MILLEN--Funeral for Arnold Bennett, 65, was held Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004 at 2 p.m. at Deep Creek Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Barksdale and Bobby Taylor Jr. officiating. Burial was in Bennett Family Cemetery. He died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2004 at Syl-View Nursing Home after an extended illness.
Mr. Bennett was a native of Jenkins County and retired from Jockey International. He was a Baptist.
Survivors include his wife, Reba Farrow Bennett; two daughters, Carol Johnson and Angie Bennett of Millen; a sister, Mary Burke of Millen; two brothers, Roosevelt (Buddy) Jr. and Wayne Bennett of Millen; and three grandchildren.

KITE--Funeral for Carlton Pringle Cummings, 61, was held Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004 at 3 p.m. at Claxton Grove Baptist Church in Kite with Rev. Alton Walker Sr. officiating. Burial was in St. Paul cemetery in Kite. He died Dec. 15, 2004 after a brief illness.
Mr. Cummings was the son of the late Elizabeth Salter. He was born on July 22, 1943. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Alton Salter and Midas Salter. He was a member of Claxton Baptist Church.
Survivors include his former wife, Joyce Cummings of Dublin; his father, Curtis Lee Salter of Kite; a daughter, Carla Coney of Dublin; a son, Bryant Cummings of Dublin; three brothers, A.B. Salter of Dublin; and Emmett Salter and Michael Salter of Kite; three sisters, Mary Oglesby of Garfield; and Bessie Brown and Cornelius Butts of Dublin; and two grandchildren.

Mrs. Fields was born in Stillmore and had retired from Creston Industries. She was of the Primitive Baptist faith.
Survivors include a son, Jerry Feutrelle of Stillmore; three sisters, Mary E. Davis and Nadija Durden of Stillmore; and Joyce Davis of Seattle, Wash.; and a brother, C.I. Smith of Richmond Hill.

LOUISVILLE--Funeral for Myra McDaniel Purvis Cobb, 93, was held Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004 at 2 p.m. at The Old Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Thigpen officiating. Burial was in Parker United Methodist Cemetery. She died Monday, Dec. 20, 2004 at Jefferson County Hospital.
Mrs. Cobb was born in Jefferson County and was the daughter of the late Nathaniel and Annie Allen McDaniel. She was a homemaker and a member of The Old Bethel Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Thomas Eugene Purvis and Tom Cobb.
Survivors include two sons, Thomas F. Purvis of Swainsboro; and Lonnie F. Purvis of Bartow; a daughter, Patricia P. Poole of Louisville; six stepchildren, Jerry Cobb and Joyce Stavely of Louisville; Dianne Smith of Wadley; Linda Hall of Bartow; Faye Harris of Gulf Breeze, Fla.; and Amagene Craft of North Augusta; three half brothers, John “Pete” McDaniel, Foye McDaniel and Wylie McDaniel, all of Aiken; a sister, Madge New of Louisville; eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Wells was a native of Abbeville County and the son of the late Henry Preston and Effie Christine Crawford Wells. He was retired from Riegel Textile Corporation in Swainsboro. He was a member of Hodges Church of God and the National Guard. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Freeman Wells.
Survivors include a son, Edgar Steven Wells of Ware Shoals, S.C.; a daughter, Diane Shuman of Ware Shoals, S.C.; a brother, Olin T. Wells of Ware Shoals, S.C.; a sister, Shirley W. Adams of Hodges, S.C.; and two grandchildren.
