Lydia Mae Murphy, 93
SWAINSBORO--Funeral for Mrs. Lydia Mae Murphy, 93, will be held Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2004 at 2 p.m. at Hillcrest Baptist Church with Rev. Neil Stich, Rev. Bill Thompson and Dr. Robert Blankenship officiating. Burial will be held in Swainsboro City Cemetery. She died Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004 at Swainsboro Nursing Home.
Mrs. Murphy was born in Johnson County and was the wife of the late James Murphy. She was a homemaker and a charter member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, where she was instrumental in organizing the church when it began in Mrs. Bill’s Café on Highway 1 North. She organized the first Bible school and was included in the Hall of Fame of Southern Baptist Convention in April 1992. She retired after 25 years of adult choir service and from teaching after 44 years of service at Dellwood Methodist Church, Blundale Baptist Church and Hillcrest Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Cecil Murphy Sr.; a daughter, Evelyn Murphy Hayes; a grandson, James M. Hayes; and her parents, Jack and Clara Knight.
Survivors include three daughters, Jonnie Boulineau of Swainsboro; Mary Kent of Swainsboro; and Tessie Greenway of Bartow; a son, Jimmy C. Murphy of Swainsboro; a sister, Ollie R. Weeks of Lizella; 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Phillip Boulineau, Bill Boulineau, Mark Greenway, Dana Cassidy Kent Jr., Ricky Hayes, Steve Temples, Johnny Tapley Jr. and James Slater. Honorary pallbearers will be trustees and deacons of Hillcrest Baptist Church.

Jody Anne Whetsell, 21
TWIN CITY--Funeral for Jody Anne Whetsell, 21, will be held Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2004 at 2 p.m. at Twin City First Baptist Church in Twin City with Rev. Franklin Sasser and Rev. John Strickland officiating. The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the Whetsell Twin City City Cemetery. She died Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004, at Memorial Hospital in Savannah after a brief illness.
Miss Whetsell was valedictorian of the 2001 graduating class at David Emanuel Academy in Stillmore where she participated in various activities including basketball and softball. She was a senior at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro and had applied to the veterinarian school at the University of Georgia in Athens. She volunteered at the Bulloch Veterinarian Clinic in Statesboro. Jody placed 12th in barrel racing at the 2004 World National Horse Association competition held in Augusta Nov. 6, 2004. She was a member of Twin City First Baptist Church in Twin City.
Survivors include her parents, John Wayne Whetsell Sr. and Judy Whetsell of Twin City; two brothers, John E. Whetsell II and John Wayne Whetsell Jr. of Twin City; and grandparents, Betty and Bob Anderson and Lousie Whetsell of Twin City.
Pallbearers are Jason Henry, Chet Chester, Greg Johnson Jr., Matthew McNeely, Britt Claxton and Cooper Fields.

Susie Wilson Morgan, 86
EVANS--Funeral for Mrs. Susie Wilson Morgan, 86, was held Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2004 at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Twin City with Rev. Wayne MacDonald and Rev. Randall Smith officiating. Burial was in Twin City City Cemetery. She died Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004 at Morningside Assisted Living Home in Evans after an extended illness.
Mrs. Morgan was a native of Aiken County, S.C. and was owner and operator of Morgan Department Store in Twin City. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Morgan. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Twin City.
Survivors include three sons, Michael Morgan of Homestead, Fla.; Chris Morgan of Baker, Fla.; and Steven Morgan of Mandeville, La.; one sister, Ellender Ramsey of Atlanta; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren

Annel Hargrove Jones, 93
SWAINSBORO--Funeral for “Mother” Annel Hargrove Jones was held Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004 at Swainsboro-Emanuel County Auditorium at 11 a.m. with Bishop Martin L. Johnson officiating and Bishop Theodore N. Brown and Elder D.G. Mosley assisting. Burial was in Jones Family cemetery in Promiseland. She died Monday, Dec. 6, 2004.
Mrs. Jones was born on Jan. 28, 1911 to the late Alma and Joe Hargrove. She attended school in Emanuel County through eighth grade. She was a member of Ohoopee Grove Church and William Grove Church of the Living God.
Survivors include six daughters and three sons, Mrs. Mattie Crosby of Portland, Oregon; Maudine Williams of San Francisco, Calif.; Joel Jones of Swainsboro; Benjamin Jones of Eggharbor, N.J.; Carolyn Nash of San Francisco, Calif.; Dolly J. Frazier-Jones of Augusta; Amelia Boyd of Lynchburg, Va.; Lee Jones Jr. and Bertha McSween of Swainsboro; 28 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Pallbearers were grandsons. Honorary pallbearers were David Thomas, Jack Johnson, Varick Braswell, Lawyer Johnson, Jesse Bright and Dessie Parrish.

Amy D. Sparks Julien, 27
BONAIRE--Funeral for Amy Delee Sparks Julien, 27, was held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 10, 2004 at the Chapel of McCullough Funeral Home in Warner Robins with burial following in Hebron Primitive Baptist Church cemetery in Garfield. She died Dec. 6, 2004.
Mrs. Sparks was born June 27, 1977 in Swainsboro to Henry and Patricia Sparks. She attended Harvest Methodist Church and was a Georgia College and State University graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree. She was preceded in death by grandparents, Loye and Reba Johnson.
Survivors include her husband, David Julien of Bonaire; her parents Henry and Patricia Sparks, of Bonaire; a daughter, Alyssa Brooke Julien of Bonaire; a sister, Julie Ann Sparks of Bonaire; and her grandparents, Henry and Helen Sparks of Metter.

Mary Hall Lerwick, 77
TWIN CITY--Memorial service for Mary Hall Lerwick, 77, was held Monday, Dec. 20, 2004 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Peebles-Curry-Durden Mortuary with Elder Tommy Rountree officiating. The body was cremated and ashes will be buried at the family plot in Twin City City Cemetery. She died Dec. 16, 2004 after an extended illness.
Mrs. Lerwick was born in Emanuel County Sept. 27, 1927. She graduated from Swainsboro High School and attended Brenau College in Gainesville. She graduated from Swainsboro Technical College and was a retired Licensed Practical Nurse. She was a lover of all animals but had a particular passion for cats. She was preceded in death by her father, Willie Hall; mother, Annie Laura Hayes; and sister, Lottie Jean Hall.
Survivors include a daughter, Debra Lerwick Bays of Savannah; a son, Quentin Lerwick of Milwaukee, Wis.; a sister, Betty “Pete” Anderson of Twin City; a granddaughter, Tina Purvis of Twin City; a great-grandson, Seth Frederick of Twin City; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

SWAINSBORO--Funeral for Martha Lee Flanders, 80, was held Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004 at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Tomlinson Funeral Home with Rev. Allen Meeks officiating. Burial was in Sardis Cemetery. She died Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004 at Emanuel Medical Center.
Mrs. Flanders was born in Johnson County and had lived in Cambridge, Mass. for many years. She lived in Swainsboro for the past 25 years. She worked in the textile industry as a seamstress. She was a Baptist by faith.
Survivors include a daughter, Laverne Flanders Mixon and husband, Bill, of Kite; two sisters, Delores Waters of Statesboro; and Catherine Durden of Tifton; two grandsons, William Mixon Jr. of Kite; and Nathan Mixon of Statesboro.

Sallie Kate Wilson Ware, 88
SWAINSBORO--Funeral for Sallie Kate Wilson Ware, 88, will be held Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004 at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Peebles-Curry-Durden Mortuary with Rev. Allen Meeks officiating. Burial will be in Swainsboro City Cemetery. She died Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004, at the Retirement Inn in Swainsboro after an extended illness.
Mrs. Ware was a native of Emanuel County and a homemaker. She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church and wife of the late Dudley Ware.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Paula and Joe Reeves, Jr. of Swainsboro; one sister, Virginia Williams of Kite; two grandchildren and their spouses, Johnathan and Samantha Bailes of South Riding, Va.; and Paula Michelle and Mark Rountree of Swainsboro.

Myrtle Peebles Curry, 79
SWAINSBORO--Funeral for Myrtle Peebles-Curry, 79, was held Friday, Dec. 17, 2004 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Southern Heritage Funeral Home with Rev. Ray Jenkins and Rev. Marty McLeod officiating. Burial was in Eastbrook cemetery in Swainsboro. She died Dec. 15, 2004 at Swainsboro Nursing Home after a brief illness.
Mrs. Curry was born in Emanuel County and a member of Calvary United Methodist Church. She served as treasurer of Shellman’s Bluff Baptist Church. She was a licensed funeral director and a member of Georgia Funeral Director Association. She was co-founder of Peebles-Curry Mortuary Inc. and Curry’s Feed and Seed Store of Swainsboro and Little River Sportsman Camp at Clarkhill Lake.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, J. Gary and Lois S. Curry of Midville; a son-in-law, Wayne Sammons and wife Tammy of Swainsboro; four grandchildren, Matthew W. Sammons, Shea Sammons, Julie Holloway and Ryleigh Holloway. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Edmond Curry, and their daughter, Sherry Curry Sammons.
Pallbearers were nephews Dr. Jimmy Peebles, David Curry, Bobby Peebles, Roger Peebles, Jeffery Peebles and Donald Peebles.

Lanie Mae Thomas Walden, 93
SWAINSBORO--Funeral for Lanie Mae (Lannie) Thomas Walden, 93, was held Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004 at Swainsboro-Emanuel County Auditorium at 11 a.m. with Bishop Rebecca Fletcher and Bishop Charles E. Campbell presiding. Burial was in Adrian cemetery in Adrian. She died Dec. 10, 2004.
Ms. Walden was a resident of Swainsboro since 1946. She was educated in the public school system in Adrian and Swainsboro. She worked on the farm, was a domestic worker, a government aide, a community servant, a midwife and a seamstress. She also helped in the operation of the family businesses for many years.
Survivors include her children, Albert Walden of Philadelphia, Penn.; Elma Spearman of Detroit, Mich.; and Homer Lee Walden Jr.; five sisters, Fannie Lee Williams and Marie Harris of Swainsboro; Sarah Reddick and Izola Thomas of Miami, Fla.; and Rev. Pecolia Gillis of Bridgeton, N.J.; two brothers, James D. Thomas of Bridgeton, N.J.; and Booker T. Thomas of Pennsgrove, N.J.; 23 grandchildren, 66 great-grandchildren and 46 great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Gerald Nichols, Harold Dean Nichols, Ricky Washington, Enrico Walden, Lagonza Hayward and Darrell Ricky Spearman. Honorary pallbearers were grandsons.

CANOOCHEE--Funeral for Hattie Lee Ila Jones, 58, was held Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004 at 2 p.m. at Holy Zion Holiness Church in Metter with Pastor Johnny Ray Jones Sr. and Bishop Cecil Newton officiating. Burial was in Mt. Gilead cemetery in Canoochee. She died Dec. 11, 2004.
Mrs. Jones was born in Emanuel County on Sept. 29, 1946. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Madison and Hattie Bell Williams. She was preceded in death by her sister, Juanita DeVose.

SWAINSBORO--Funeral for Mary Lewis Turner was held Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004 at 1 p.m. at Ohoopee Grove Baptist Church in Nunez with Pastor Eugene Davis officiating and Rev. Keith Moore assisting. Burial was in Flat Ford cemetery in Nunez. She died Friday, Dec. 17, 2004 at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta after an extended illness.
Mrs. Turner was a native of Emanuel County where she attended public schools. She was a member of Ohoopee Grove Baptist Church for many years.
Survivors include her husband, George Turner of Swainsboro; two sons, Curtis Lewis and James Webb of Swainsboro; five daughters, Bessie Warren of College Park; Marilyn Lewis, Gwendolyn Brantley and Mary Smith of Dublin; and Laura Gibson of Wadley; a sister, Adell Smith of Columbus; three brothers, A.J. Lewis of Crescent City, Fla.; Ira Lewis of Swainsboro; and Aldof Lewis of Winter Haven, Fla.; nine stepdaughters, three stepsons, 18 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Harriet J. Scott
THOMASVILLE--Services for Harriet J. Scott of Pavo were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004 at Allen & Allen Funeral Chapel in Thomasville. The Rev. Larry Harris officiated and interment was in Laurel Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Scott died Dec. 20, 2004 at her residence.
Born May 24, 1917 in Youngstown, Ohio, she was the daughter of Harmon C. and Gertrude Miller Welch. She was married
to Walter U. Scott, who preceded her in death. Mrs. Scott was a retired School Counselor at Thomasville High School and a member of Pavo Baptist Church, NEA and GAE.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Walter Harmon and Sharon Scott; grandchildren, Walter Harmon Scott, Jr. of Jesup; and Mary Susan Scott Casey of Statesboro; great-grandchildren, Savannah Scott, Cierra Scott of Jesup; and Anna Casey, Brittany Casey, Candace Casey and Trey Casey all of Statesboro. A sister, Corrine Beard, preceded her in death.
