Ruth Stroud Padgett, 81

EAST DUBLIN--Funeral for Ruth Stroud Padgett, 81, was held Wednesday, April 6, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Forest Hills Church of God in East Dublin with Rev. Jeff Padgett and Rev. Edward Wilkes officiating. Burial was in Dublin Memorial Gardens. She died Monday, April 4, 2005.

Mrs. Padgett was a native of Swainsboro. She was the daughter of the late Sydney Stroud and Tessie Lee Whitehead Stroud. She was a resident of Laurens County for most of her life. She was a member of Forest Hills Church of God and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Roy Stroud, Ralph Stroud and Ray Stroud; and a sister, Pearl Stroud, all of Swainsboro.

Survivors include her husband, Harvey Padgett of East Dublin; sons, Harvey
L. Padgett, Jr. and Bobby Padgett of East Dublin; and George Padgett of Bonaire; brothers, Delmer Stroud and Arthur Stroud, both of Swainsboro; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren

Pallbearers were Ted Bland, Larry Lumley, Joey Padgett, Roy Linn Stroud, Charles Stroud and Pat Padgett.

Curtis Watson Gay, 89

RINCON--Funeral for Curtis Watson Gay, 89, was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 6, in the funeral home chapel of Thomas C. Strickland & Sons Funeral Home with Rev. Steven Parker and Rev. Donny S. Crosby officiating. Burial was in Effingham Memorial Gardens. He died Monday, April 4, 2005 at Hospice Savannah.

Mr. Gay was a Vidalia native and was a WW II Army veteran, a truck driver and a member of Rincon First Christian Church. He was a 50 year member of the Loyal Order of the Moose and a 50 year member of the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Fisher Gay of Rincon; daughters, Mildred Monroe of Savannah; Pamela Allen Wallace of Woodstock; sons, Bobby O.

Gay of Swainsboro; George Watson Gay of Oklahoma City, OK; Dennis Stodghill of Monroe; Michael Stodghill of Hardeeville; Leslie Stodghill of Rincon; sisters, Virginia Mixon, Joann Bell and Carolyn Humphrey, all of Vidalia; brother, Emerson Gay of Jesup; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Kevin Gay, Jeffrey Stodghill, Jeremy Stodghill, Brandon Stodghill, Michael Stodghill, Jr., and Bennie Denmark. Honorary pall-bearers were Elders from Rincon First Christian Church.

Thomas C. Strickland & Sons Funeral Homes, Effingham Chapel, had charge of arrangements.

Benjamin Strobridge, 91

SWAINSBORO--Funeral for Benjamin Strobridge, 91, was held Sunday, April 10, 2005 at St. Philip Baptist Church with Pastor James Love and Rev. Bennie Brinson officiating. Burial was in Swainsboro City Cemetery. He died Thursday, April 7, 2005 at Emanuel Medical Center after an extended illness.

Mr. Strobridge was a native and lifelong resident of Emanuel County where he attended public schools. He was a businessman, operating Strobridge Grocery for over 50 years. He was a member of St. Philip Baptist Church where he served as chairman of the board of deacons and was superintendent of Sunday schools for many years. He was recognized as Citizen of the Year by City of Swainsboro and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and was a recipient of the Martin Luther King Jr. Image award.

Survivors include two daughters, Geraldine Stro-bridge Jackson and Cecilia Hall of Swainsboro; two sisters, Helen Wilson of Savannah; and Sadie McClain of Philadelphia, Penn.; four grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Reno Tapley Mortuary had charge of arrangements.

Maude Fordham Durden, 87

SWAINSBORO--Funeral for Maude Fordham Durden, 87, was held Sunday, April 10, 2005, at Antioch Primitive Baptist Church with Elder John Shelton Mikell officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. She died Friday, April 8, 2005 at Bethany Home Nursing Home in Vidalia.

Mrs. Durden was a native of Bulloch County and had lived in Swainsboro for the past 59 years. She was a homemaker and a member of Antioch Primitive Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Rudy Durden of Jacksonville, Fla.; and Elder Mickey Durden of Oak Park; a daughter, Lilla Patterson of Glennville; eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Don Fordham, Clisby Fordham, Jerry Fordhan, Burney Fordham, Loche Fordham and Carlyle McCorkle.

Tomlinson Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Allen Miller, 45

SWAINSBORO--Funeral for Allen Miller, 45, will be held Wednesday, April 13, 2005 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Peebles-Curry-Durden Mortuary with Rev. Bill Thompson officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Springs United Methodist Church cemetery in Washington County. He died Sunday, April 10, 2005 from injuries received in an automobile accident.

Mr. Miller was a native of Laurens County, employed as Field Services Representative with Georgia Power Company and was a Baptist. He was son of the late Cecil Alfred Miller.

Survivors include his wife, Dina Duncan Miller of Swainsboro; his mother, Gwen Rowland Miller of Wrightsville; three daughters, Candace Miller of Wrightsville; and Allie Miller and Hailey Miller of Swainsboro; one son, Kyle Miller of Swainsboro; one sister, Dianne Campbell of Lawrenceville; and two grandchildren, Jaxson Braswell and Caylin Braswell of Wrightsville.

Pallbearers are Neil Kyzer, Timmy Story, Marty Price, Harold Smith, Mark Stevens and Gary Hobby. Honorary pallbearers are employees of Georgia Power Company and Shop Rite Pharmacy.

Peebles-Curry-Durden Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Myrtle Tanner Slater, 77

SWAINSBORO--Funeral for Myrtle Tanner Slater, 77, was held Monday, April 11, 2005 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Peebles-Curry-Durden Mortuary with Rev. Allen Meeks and Rev. Lamar Little officiating. Burial was in New Hope Primitive Baptist Church cemetery near Lexsy. She died Friday, April 8, 2005, at the Jefferson County Hospital after an extended illness.

Mrs. Slater was a native of Emanuel County, a homemaker, and a Baptist. She was wife of the late Lee Otis Slater.

Survivors include one daughter, Louise Martin of Swainsboro; five sons, Larry Hooks of Garfield; Alton-Hooks of Kite; Don Hooks of Twin City; Jimmy Hooks of Swansea, S.C.; and Jerry Hooks of Nunez; one sister, Wanda Todd of Conway, S.C.; one brother, Russell Tanner of Oak Park; 21 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Ricky Hooks, Michael Hooks, Brad Hooks, Tracy Hooks, Charles Hooks and Blake Hooks.

Peebles-Curry-Durden Mortuary had charge of arrangements.

Thelma Waller Peebles, 90

SWAINSBORO--Funeral for Thelma Waller Peebles, 90, will be held Wednesday, April 13, 2005 at 2 pm. at First Baptist Church with Dr. Bob Blankenship officiating. Burial will be in Swainsboro City Cemetery. She died Sunday, April 10, 2005, at her residence after an extended illness.

Mrs. Peebles was a native of Johnson County. She graduated from high school in Kite, GA and attended GA College for Women in Milledgeville. She was wife of the late R. J. Waller and was co-owner of R. J. Waller Insurance and Real Estate, Waller Building Supply and Waller Home Construction Company. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, The Happy Rovers and the Faithful Workers Sunday School Class and served many years on the Trustee Board. She served on the board of directors of Spivey State Bank and was a member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club. She was also wife of the late Johnny Peebles.

Survivors include one sister, Betty Hill of Jacksonville, Fla.; special friends, Hazel Stevens and Ruby Marion of Swains-boro; several nieces and nephews

Pallbearers are nephews. Honorary pallbearers are officers and directors of Spivey State Bank, deacons and trustees of First Baptist Church, Roy Kilpatrick, Bonnie Ogburn, Raymond Riner, Sid Shepherd, Pat Perry, Tyson Stephens.

Peebles-Curry-Durden Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Betty Sue Moore, 73

SNELLVILLE--A private memorial was held recently for Betty Sue Moore, 73. She died April 7, 2005.

Mrs. Moore was born on Dec. 21, 1931 to the late Avery Frank Cope and Georgia Oday Cope in Canton, N.C. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles C. Moore; and brothers, Kenneth, Ray, Bill and Pete.

Survivors include a daughter, Sandi Bowen; son, Chuck Moore; a brother, Charles Cope; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Tom W. Wages Funeral Service of Lawrenceville had charge of arrangements.

Freddie Ray Bell, 80

SWAINSBORO--Funeral for Freddie Ray Bell, 80, will be held Thursday, April 14, 2005 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Peebles-Curry-Durden Mortuary with Rev. Wayne DeFore officiating. Burial will be in Hall cemetery near Modoc. He died Monday, April 11, 2005 at the Emanuel Medical Center after an extended illness. The family will receive friends at Peebles-Curry-Durden Mortuary Wednesday, April 13 from 6 to 8 p.m..

Mr. Bell was born in Modoc and worked as security with Calvine Industries. He was a member of First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one brother, Eddie Bell of Swainsboro.

Pallbearers are Rodney Beckworth, Marion Beck-worth, Dalton Bell, Fletcher Jones, Chris Jones and Jerry Braddy.

William David Lamb, 71

SWAINSBORO--Funeral for William David Lamb, 71, was held Thursday, April 7, 2005 at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Wayne DeFore officiating. Burial was in Swainsboro City cemetery with Dr. Bob Blankenship officiating. He died Tuesday, April 5, 2005 at Emanuel Medical Center after an extended illness.

Mr. Lamb was a native of Emanuel County and a graduate of Swainsboro High School. He earned a bachelor of business administration degree from the University of Georgia and masters in education degree from Georgia Southern College. From 1959 until 1985, Mr. Lamb took various courses toward certification from Appalachian State University, Boone, N.C.; San Francisco State University, San Francisco, Calif.; University of Georgia and Georgia Southern College. Mr. Lamb taught in the Emanuel County School System at Swainsboro Elementary School from 1969 until 1988 and served as assistant principal from 1962 until 1967. He also taught at Marvin Pittman Laboratory School, Georgia Southern College, Statesboro, Garden Avenue Elementary, Tulare, Calif., Monroe Junior High, Tampa, Fla., Knollwood Elementary in Dekalb County and Treutlen High, Soperton. In 1988, Mr. Lamb joined the faculty at David Emanuel Academy, Still-more, and was appointed headmaster for the 1989-1990 term. Mr. Lamb worked with East Georgia College from August 1998 to June 2000 as Director of the PREP Program, inviting both local and surrounding counties’ high school students to visit the college campus and introduce them to classes, scheduling and general college programs. He was a member of the Emanuel Association of Educators, National Education Association, Georgia Association of Educators and Processional Association of Georgia Educators. He was a member of the Swains-boro Kiwanis Club. He was a member of and Sunday School teacher at First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Dekle Lamb of Swainsboro; three daughters, Amy Lamb Hadden of Vidalia; Kim Rundle of Statesboro; and Gay Chapman of Swainsboro; one son, Dekle Wightman of Kennesaw; one sister, Rebecca Lamb Cannady of Swainsboro; two brothers, Alfred C. Lamb, Jr. of Dublin; and Frank Lamar Lamb of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; and one granddaughter and six grandsons.

Pallbearers were Alfred C. Lamb III, Frank Lamar Lamb, Jr., Lee Canady, Elwyn Coleman, Jim Dekle, Bobby Sasser and Frank Wimberly. Honorary pall-bearers were members of the Swainsboro Kiwanis Club, The Leroy Williams Sunday School Class and the Quail Lake Drive neighborhood.

Jimmie R. Leonard, 83

PINCKARD, ALA.--Memorial service for Jimmy Roosevelt (J.R.) Leonard, 83, was held Thursday, March 31, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Holman-Headland Mortuary Chapel in Headland, Ala. with Rev. Jimmy Maddox officiating. He died March 29, 2005 at Ozark Health & Rehabilitation Center.

Mr. Leonard was born in Lexington, N.C. but reared in Swainsboro. He was the son of the late Pierce D. Leonard and Ida May Miller Leonard. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He lived in Swainsboro and Mobile, Ala. before moving to Pinckard, Ala. in 1967. He retired as owner and operator of J.R.

Leonard Trucking Company of Pinckard and was an avid golfer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Clements Leonard; and two brothers, Dick Leonard and Harlan Leonard.

Survivors include a daughter, Ellen Leonard Thomas of Pinckard; a son, Jimmy P. Leonard of Dothan. Ala.; a sister, Diana Ramsey of Clearwater, Fla.; three brothers, Pete Leonard of Mt. Airy, N.C.; Mike Leonard of Charlotte, N.C.; and Tyson Leonard of Independence, Va.; and one granddaughter.

Holman-Headland Mortuary of Headland, Ala. had charge of arrangements.

Christine Braswell Nichols, 87

TIFTON--Funeral for Christine Braswell Nichols, 87, was held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 1, 2005 at Salem Primitive Baptist Church in Screven with Elder Tommy Waters of Jesup, Elder Roland Waters of Screven and Christopher Drake Spearman of Pasadena, Calif. officiating. She died on Wednesday, March 30, 2005.

Ms. Nichols was born on July 27, 1917 in Emanuel County to the late Early and Maude Braswell of Adrian. She was a graduate of Adrian High School, Middle Georgia College and Georgia Southern College. She was a resident of Wayne County since 1937. She was an elementary school teacher in the Wayne County School System from 1937 to 1979. She was a member of Wayne County Retired Teachers Association; former member of Gordonia Garden Club and Jesup Garden Club council; and member of Salem Primitive Baptist Church and Salem Ladies Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chris Waldon Nichols; and a brother, Thetas Braswell.

Survivors include children Neil Nichols of Screven; Sandra Spearman of Tifton; and Ned Nichols of Jesup; and six grandchildren.

Pallbearers were David Hodge, Kenny Copeland, Derby Waters, Lynn Harris, C. Mike Henderson, Edwin Wright, James Bennett and Jimmy Collins. Honorary pallbearers were Salem Church Auxiliary and Wayne County Retired Teachers.

Reinhardt and Son of Jesup had charge of arrangements.
