John L. Edwards
Mr. John L. Edwards, 73, of Dahlonega, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta, following a period of declining health.
Born Feb. 14, 1928, in Lumpkin County, Mr. Edwards was the son of the late Homer L. and Leona Higgins Edwards.
Mr. Edwards had retired from The Torrington Company and most recently had worked as a courier for United Community Bank.
Mr. Edwards was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Lumpkin County.
He was preceded in death by sisters Nellie Fay Edwards, Annie Kate Wigley and Clellan Crow, and a brother, Ray Edwards.
Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Mrs. Alma Edwards, Dahlonega; daughters and sons-in-law, Dianne and James Lomax, Worth, Ill., Delores Edwards, Justice, Ill., Natalie and Tripp King, Dahlonega, Sadie and Billy Adams, Cleveland, Lisa and Greg Raber, Gainesville; 11 grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Ethel Lou and Johnny Paul Jones, Corene and James Jones, Mrs. Alagene Beck, all of Dahlonega; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Gladys Edwards, Suwanee, George and Valerie Edwards, Dahlonega, Mrs. Chris Edwards, Murrayville; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Services were held Jan. 31 at Yahoola Baptist Church with the Rev. Neal Head, the Rev. Lyman Caldwell and the Rev. Dean Bryant officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mildred Lafferty
Mrs. Mildred Lafferty, 88, of Dahlonega, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at her residence following an extended illness.
Mrs. Lafferty was a native of Logan, Kansas, and was a former resident of Tucson, Ariz., who had lived in Lumpkin County since September 1999.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Tom Carter, Dahlonega.
Mrs. Lafferty was cremated. No local services were held.

Beverly Nunley
Mrs. Beverly Nunley, 62, of Dahlonega, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at her residence following an extended illness.
Born in Yuma, Ky., she had lived in Lumpkin County for more than four years, having moved from Fayetteville, N.C. Mrs. Nunley was a homemaker, a member of Cornerstone Christian Church, and was preceded in death by her parents, Elwood and Frances Scott, and a brother, David Scott.
Survivors include her husband, Richard L. Nunley, Dahlonega; daughters, Tami Williams, Amanda Reeves, both of Dawsonville, Beth Daniel, Elizabethtown, Ky., Alicia Riggs, St. Petersburgh, Fla.; son, John S. Logan, Minot, N.D.; brother, Ronald Scott, Covington, Ind.; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a number of other relatives.
Services were held Jan. 29 at Cornerstone Christian Church with the Rev. Randy Smith officiating.

Weyman Chitwood
Mr. Weyman Chitwood, 65, of Dahlonega, died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, at St. Joseph Hospital in Atlanta following a brief illness.
Mr. Chitwood was a native and former resident of Habersham County who had lived in Lumpkin County for the past 29 years. He was employed with the White County Road Department, was a U.S. Navy veteran, and was of the Baptist faith.
He was the son of the late Kimsey and Eunice Watkins Chitwood and was also preceded in death by sisters Riznora Scroggs, Minnie Greeman, and Annie Mae Turpin.
He is survived by his loving wife, Nancy Chitwood, Dahlonega; sons, Steven Chitwood, Brent Chitwood, both of Cleburn, Texas; daughter, Brenda Ybarra, Cleburn, Texas; brother, K.C. Chitwood, Baldwin; sister, Sara Chitwood, Cleburne, Texas; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a number of other relatives.
At his request, Mr. Chitwood was cremated and a memorial service is planned for a later date.

Cassie Payne
Mrs. Cassie Payne, 95, of Dahlonega, died Monday, Aug. 5, 2002, at Chestatee Regional Hospital in Dahlonega following a short illness.
Mrs. Payne was born in Lumpkin County where she lived most of her life. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.
She was the daughter of the late Goodman and Flossie Hayes Sullens and was also preceded in death by sisters Bessie Brown and Bertie Barrett; and brothers James E. Sullens, Charles Sullens, Roy Lee Sullens, and Robert Sullens.
She is survived by her sister, Mary Etta Sullens, Dahlonega; good friends, Rick and Kay Cochran; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Services were held Aug. 7 at the Banister Funeral Home Chapel in Dahlonega with the Rev. Dean Bryant and the Rev. Chandler Anderson officiating. Burial followed in Brown's Chapel Church cemetery in Lumpkin County.

Alice Brown
Mrs. Alice Brown, 78, of Dawsonville, died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, at Crawford W. Long Hospital in Atlanta following a sudden illness.
A lifelong resident of Dawson County, Mrs. Brown was a former employee of Sweet-Orr and was a member of New Life Church of God.
She was preceded in death by her son, Randy Brown; parents, Ben and Jane Ingram; a sister, three brothers, two grandsons and a great-granddaughter.
Survivors include her husband, Russell Brown, Dawsonville; children, Melvin 'Red' Brown, David Brown, Winifred 'Winky' Brown, all of Dawsonville, Roger Brown, Jamie Brown, both of Dahlonega; sister, Rosie Jett, Dawsonville, Addiemae Ashford, Dalton; brother, Robert Ingram, Dawsonville; 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a number of other relatives.
Services were held Aug. 6 at New Life Church of God with the Rev. Mike Owens officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Herman L. “Doc” Bearden
Mr. Herman L. “Doc” Bearden, 69, of Dawsonville, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at Gold City Community Living Center in Dahlonega following an extended illness.
Born in Dawson County, he lived there most of his life. A farmer for most of his life, he worked at Bent Tree until his retirement.
Mr. Bearden was preceded in death by his parents, Grady and Bevelene Bearden, and a brother, Johnny “Pee Wee” Bearden.
He is survived by his wife, Lamour S. Bearden, Dawsonville; sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Dolores Bearden, Dahlonega, Donald and Denise Bearden, Dawsonville; sisters, Velvie Davis, Dahlonega, Monnie Adams, Canton; brother, Dorsey Bearden, Dawsonville; sister-in-law, Rudene Bearden, Dawsonville; grandchildren, Matthew and Jessica Bearden, Christopher Bearden; and a number of other relatives.
Services were held Jan. 23 at Bearden Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Joel Embry officiating. Burial followed in New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery.

Kathy Weaver
Mrs. Kathy Weaver, 60, of Dahlonega, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at her residence following an extended illness.
Born April 29, 1942, in Lumpkin County, she was the daughter of the late Burrell Walker.
Mrs. Weaver worked as a seamstress with RefriWear in Dahlonega and was a member of Tickanetley Primitive Baptist Church in Gilmer County.
She is survived by her husband, Mark Weaver, Dahlonega; daughters and sons-in-law, Cassie Diane and Richard Johnson, Cleveland, Margaret Rose and Michael Patterson, Dahlonega, Dinah Fay and Robert Johnson, Cleveland, Lora Ann Schmidt, Savannah, Nancy Jane and Sammy Mullis, Dahlonega, Cindy Rebecca Cole and Mike Schmidt, Savannah, Sarah Lynn and Shane Abernathy, Dahlonega; sons and daughter-in-law, William Paul and Francine Weaver, Tony James Weaver, all of Dahlonega; mother, Mrs. Montaine Clarke, Gainesville; sisters, Judy Thompson, Cindy Smith, Martha Clarke, all of Gainesville; brothers, Bill Walker, Terry Walker, Ricky Clarke, Reggie Clarke, all of Gainesville; 17 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Jan. 25 at Tickanetley Primitive Baptist Church in Gilmer County with Elder Joe Hildreth, Edler Paul Mooney and Elder Lawrence Mooney officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Russell Brown
Mr. Russell Brown, 81, of Dawsonville, died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at Lanier Park Hospital following a sudden illness.
Born in Lumpkin County, he lived most of his life in Dawson County. Mr. Brown spent his working years doing construction and sawmill work. He was of the Pentacostal faith and was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Brown; son, Randy Brown; parents, George and Emily Brown; two grandsons; and a great-granddaughter.
He is survived by his children, Melvin “Red” Brown, David Brown, Winifred “Winky” Brown, all of Dawsonville, Roger Brown, Jamie Brown, both of Dahlonega; 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a number of other relatives.
Services were held Jan. 27 at New Life Church of God with the Rev. Mike Owens officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Maussettia Rose Thompson
Mrs. Maussettia Rose Thompson, 78, of Dahlonega, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at Chestatee Regional Hospital in Dahlonega following a brief illness.
Born Sept. 5, 1924, in Jasper County, Mo., she was the daughter of the late Thomas Edward and Fern Fay Tolliver Flynn.
Mrs. Thompson was a former resident of Grandview, Mo., and had lived in Lumpkin County since 1991. She had worked as a cashier at Bi-Lo, and was a member of Coronation of Our Lady Catholic Church in Grandview, Mo.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles William Thompson.
She is survivied by her sons, Dennis Lane Thompson, Roswell, Mike Stephen Thompson, Blue Springs, Mo., Charles William Thompson Jr., Albany; sister, Ada Lakey, Rogers, Ark.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held Jan. 27 at Mount Olivet cemetery in Kansas City, Mo., with Father Bob Murphy officiating.
